Title: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 24 Sep 2012, 07:29
My bra matches the color of my top and for some reason I think this is awesome?

You are not alone in this. I get a little twinge of excitement when I realize things like this.

For me it's when I realise I've inadvertently matched my, say, panties and scarf.

Oh for lord's sake, you've got me thinking about this: OK, I invested in some three-packs of Jockey-brand briefs, red/blue/charcoal, and occasionally wear a deep red polo shirt very close to the color of some of the briefs. I notice it, but if there's excitement, I'd have to put it in the centitwinge range. Probably there, barely measurable. And I don't think I could tell you why.

I've taken thousands and thousands of showers and I still get smelly. I must be doing something wrong.

But smelly = dirty and dirty = having fun.

I think some of the excitement comes from the fact that you've bought items in different places and/or at different times and they look like they MATCH, like, you put effort into matching! And I do like to be sure my clothing matches/goes well together.

My boyfriend, on the other hand, will wear a plaid button-down shirt with athletic shorts and sport flip-flops. But then picks on me for having only one or two matching bra and panty sets.

I have one matching set of underwear and bra that are actually a set. I'll wear the bra with whatever underwear, because I only have 3 bras that fit right now, but the matching undies are only worn with that bra. I feel like I should have bought more of the underwear...

It's tough for me to find bras in my size, but easy to find panties despite my giant ass. So I have... nine bras of the exact same brand and style, in different colors. Two more in a different style for when I wanna look like I have boobs. And then I have about a bazillion pairs of panties in all sorts of colors and styles. I can of course match black with black, but I have only one true matching set.

I love the magically matching thing too.

Re: Bras/Panties-

I have a ton of both, but mainly because I have some bizarre issue with throwing out stuff that is uncomfortable and/or just plain....wrong. I used to wear thongs all the time and I have a bunch of really cute ones but they've really bugged me lately. Still, I just can't get rid of them because I think that I might change my mind and want them and then have to go out and spend money that I don't have.

Bras are a pain in the ass. I find one that I think might work and then wear it all the time and then it decides to be an asshole and fall apart. I bought one six months ago that was awesome....until I realized that the thread holding the straps on was coming undone and the cups had given up on doing any work. There is a permanent bend in the underside, I blame it on cheap construction and heavy boobs. Victoria's Secret bras are the only one that don't fall apart on me or have other weird issues (wonky underwire, twisty straps, etc) but they're so fucking expensive it's ridiculous. So yeah, even though I own 15 or so, I rotate between 3 or 4, not counting "special" bras.

Victoria's Secret doesn't carry my bra size in their stores. Just online. So eff them! I go to Cacique, which actually has a decent selection and has quality bras. Also they usually have a lot of sales revolving around getting one half-off or free.

Neither place carries bras in my size. Apparently not many people are fat with small boobs? Generally I go to Fashion Bug but now they're going out of business so who knows what I'll do.

As for socks, I used to just wear the first two socks I found in the drawer. I had all novelty socks with weird prints and characters. But then I had to be on my feet and sweating all day so I got all black sport socks of varying lengths which basically matched each other. And now I need special socks for work since I have to dress nice, so I have to put in the time to find them and make sure they match my outfit and so on.

I have to get bras from expensive specialist shops because I am not a normal ratio, and I can't afford to have lots - at the moment I have two that fit, one being my sports bra, and two that sort of fit so I wear them when I need a backup. I've only had a matching set of underwear once in my life! I don't even wear pyjama sets because the tops are always too small if the bottoms fit.

I don't want to know what you're doing with a bra that makes your ass hurt :-)

I get mine at Cacique, but if my cup size goes up I will size out of them.  This is my only real motivation to lose weight.  Their bras are pretty nice, but they always break in the same spot for me, and frequently when the rest of the bra still sees quite nice.  The underwire, usually on the left side, breaks about 1/3 of the way down from my arm pit.  I don't know id this is a weak spot in their bras, or if I do something weird that they just can't take.

If the rest of the bra is sound, you can buy underwire from most sewing stores, like JoAnn Fabrics and what not. I don't know how much that will solve, but it'd be cheaper than buying an entire new bra.

I hear this complaint ALL THE TIME, especially in the trans community (where it's not uncommon for people looking for, say 44A bras).

I don't have a hard time finding bras (36C is a pretty easy size to find, or find something that fits), I just never wear them. If anything, I'm usually wearing something that compresses (http://t-kingdom.com/products.htm) everything.

It depends for me....I hate buying them online because I never know if they'll fit but I buy online occasionally because all the cute bras in store are all B cups. But then I feel like their sizing is inconsistent. I've found well fitting bras in any combination of D/DD, 36-38. (Not just in VS actually....when I get desperate for a new one and I have no cash, I head to Target of Kmart and have the same problems.) I've come across some 36D bras that are bigger than a 38DD in another brand. The last time I went bra shopping I was out for an hour and a half and left empty handed. Everything either doesn't fit well, is ugly or is just....way too much bra. I'll find ones that stick out of my top but yet still don't cover the sideboob spillage.

Anyone know a good place that does fittings? I thought about getting one at VS but a friend of mine went for one and was told that her 36Bs were 34Ds.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Lines on 26 Sep 2012, 07:18
I know Cacique does and they hit the nail on the head for me. (38DD and I'd been buying 40D beforehand. It was a magical experience, finding a comfortable bra that FIT.) I've had them at department stores before, too, and I guess they were correct, but that was a loooong time ago when I didn't really know how a bra was supposed to fit. I would recommend getting fit at a place that you would trust the employees to know what they're doing or get fittings at a few places and see what the consensus seems to be.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 26 Sep 2012, 07:28
Style seems to have a huge impact on sizing. A 40C in a balconette style fits way different from a 40C in a t-shirt bra style. And I'd still say to go to VS for a fitting. Ask for the measurements they took, along with the size they say you are, and go home and look it up online. That will tell you if they got it right. But also know that sometimes you can fudge the sizing. For example, I am supposed to wear a 42B. This is difficult to find. So, I can usually make a 40C work, which is super comfortable and actually makes me look like I have boobs. If I wanted something a little looser I could do a 44A, but of course that is even more difficult to find.

In other words, you can go down a band size and up a cup size, or up a band size and down a cup size. Of course how well it fits all depends on the cut and style and their sizing and blah blah blah. This is why I found one style that fits me and bought a million of them.

I've never bought any bra without being properly fitted for it, and I don't believe I've ever bought two the same size on different occasions.

I got sized at Fredrick's once. I got a bra of their in that size that was on sale, and the stupid thing still didn't fit. Then again, it was a type that had more padding on the underside than most bras do.

The thing is that you have to be fitted for every bra - unless it is exactly the same brand, style and even colour as one you were fitted for about a month ago. And your breasts can change size during your menstrual cycle, so one that fitted one week might be too tight the next.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: lepetitfromage on 26 Sep 2012, 11:55
I've actually never had a fitting before.  :-o Typically, I just went for what "felt right". I feel weird about getting sized but not because "oh, hey you're looking at me half naked" but because I sweat so damn much and it grosses me out to think of anyone near my armpits.

Perhaps it's time to suck it up and deal. haha

...........I would also thoroughly enjoy an underwear thread.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Omega Entity on 26 Sep 2012, 14:11
I've actually never been stripped down for a fitting. As long as the shirt you're wearing isn't two sizes too big or anything like that, they usually just measure through the clothes. Or at least, in my experience.

There was a bra store at the mall (for about 5 minutes) where I got fitted originally, and I just keep buying the same brand & style wherever I can find it, but the fancier department stores like Nordstrom's will do fittings for you too.

Lookit me, starting threads unbeknownst to my mental mind.

If anyone needs super amazing awesome socks try sockdreams.com. They even have stockings for bigger people.

Also I am sad that Walmart changed their novelty underwear brand. They used to have the best bikini undies, and they went on super sale after every holiday, so I have a million pairs of Halloween undies.

I approve so hard of this answer. But yeah - I either wear a push-up bra or a binder, depending on how I feel like presenting that day.

(I'd say if I feel like presenting male or female, but I get read female either way. That's where the beard comes in...)

Sock Dreams is pretty great. I'm also fond of Rocknsocks, and sock it to me socks.

95% of my underwear of all kinds, socks, panties, bras are black. It doesn't make it as easy to match things as you think since some stuff gets worn or washed more so a lot of different shades of black. Bras are the most varying for colour for depending on what top I'm wearing.

Blackness: For years, I wore two brands wool socks, mostly black, some navy, to work. Some faded, naturally or with the help of some inadvertent bleach. Most of the lights in the house were incandescent, and I found that once upstairs in the bedroom, two floors over the laundry, it was hard to match pairs. But down in the laundry, black and navy socks on top of white dryer, under cool fluorescents, it was easy most of the time.

This thread reminded me I am long overdue for buying some new knickers. Just back from the shop where I've bought them a bunch before (multipacks for cheap, but they do the job and last well) and I couldn't find black any where. The only solid colour I could find was white, the rest were all fashion types with patterns, ribbons, buttons and pictures, mostly of children's cartoon characters and that seems plain off to me.

I'm sure some of it is the look. Or the idea of a woman wearing men's underwear.

I think boxer briefs are the hottest underwear a guy can have. Boxers are too loose to be attractive.

It's really preference, I'll admit boxers are far too loose when it comes to extended sitting down, Plus they make driving very uncomfortable since they're so loose,

Either way, I still like stripy boxers.  8-)

I had a pair of boxers once as a pair of sleeping shorts, I just sewed up the fly. Honestly I had them because the print was hilarious (elephants holding daisies) and they were like $5 or something. They fit, they weren't stupid girly like most women's pajamas, and I found them humorous. I actually did find them comfortable...but only for sleeping.

However, I have some boy short style underpants and I love them because they actually cover my butt. Like...all of it. Without looking or feeling like granny panties. I don't like most boy short style underpants because even though they cover more of your hips, they cover only half of your butt and I'm not a fan.

Yeah I've noticed that men's underwear seems to be a whole lot softer than most of the panties I have. But I have never worn any due to the fact that I have a seriously huge ass and all of the guys I've dated have been of the tiny ass variety.

Yessssss. Briefs can be sexy too, depending on the style and/or guy. I bought Nick a bunch of superhero briefs and they're freaking awesome.

As far as men's boxers on ladies- I have one pair that I bought because I wanted to see what the big deal was (and they were uber cheap from Old Navy). They're orange plaid and really comfy. Never bothered to sew the fly because I roll the waistband to make them a bit shorter. Even in shorts made for ladies, I roll waistbands because the saggy crotch thing irritates me.

As far as undies in general, I'm a big fan of boyshorts or hipsters. They're comfy and cute.

I've worn briefs most of my life, mostly for support, to keep my descending parts penis and scrotum from flopping about. It seems to be less of an issue, and now I'm alternating between briefs and boxer-briefs. I suppose younger guys subject to sudden arousal would have another reason to wear briefs.

I love knee socks but am cursed to be unable to wear them.  I have big huge calves. It is partially my weight, but mostly genetic.  They were thick before I was. They weight plus my predisposition towards big calves means that nothing meant to fit legs snugly fits me. :(

I don't know where else this would go, but underwear seems like a good place.  I received a new corset.  This one is much better quality than my old one.  I am super excited.

I have the opposite problem, not so much in socks but in boots. I have toothpick legs (small calves and smaller ankles), so any boots that come up above the ankle look ridiculous for how much room is in there, in both places. I'd make the effort to find someplace that does custom sizing, but I don't have that kind of money to spend  :-(

As far as boots I suggest to both of you: http://www.duoboots.com/  Which makes custom boots both larger and smaller in the calf than "normal" boots.  Alas I am 6 cm bigger than their biggest size. :(

I get the same issue with boots and socks for knee-lengths. Damn calves, everyone in my family has huge ones. My extra meat doesn't help.
Plus I have quite wide square but small feet so shoes are a pain just in that sense. Depending on the style or brand I can get a UK 3/4/5. I don't think I've ever seen a half-size in real life here. I just buy men's shoes most of the time now but I wish I could wear heels without having the sides of my feet and toes squished or a gap that makes them cut into the back of my heel. Got some exceptions but not many and they aren't cheap.

Also yes, I want those Portal socks so much.

That's the type of bra that I have 9 of in different colors. I love them.

As for boots that aren't wide enough in the calf, I got some black boots that lace up in the front and added extra panels and longer string. Doesn't look quite as fancy but they work.

I'm sure some of it is the look. Or the idea of a woman wearing men's underwear.

I think boxer briefs are the hottest underwear a guy can have. Boxers are too loose to be attractive.

I think they're called "trunks" here or something. I hope I'm thinking of the same one's you're thinking of, they're essentially snug/tight boxers. Actual boxer shorts are, for me, just like wearing a pair of shorts under your jeans or something, which isn't cool. Plus they're really unflattering. I believe guys have dicks and butts, they should probably show them off. Briefs are a little too "my dad" + "small boy" to even be considered beyond their uncomfortableness and general plainness.

Ed Hardy trunks are probably the nicest ones I own, and a pair of Pringles too.

Oh, and I'm finally getting to a stage where I'm not having any of that odd-sock bullshit. I'm getting nice socks (all my old ones have ALL managed to get holes in them at the same time) and they're staying in pairs forever, dammit, or I'm going to wear espadrilles and sandals until I inevitably get bionic feet and can simply jump to work.

Also if you wear shorts and boxers you need to be careful how you sit.  First time I ever saw a scrotum was at summer camp, when boxers and baggy shorts were the norm.  :)

My favorite memory around boxers was when I was on the track & field team in middle school. Our uniforms had those tiny short shorts, but they had the attached briefs on the inside. So, you know, your junk was a little more secure and your underwear was hidden. Some of the guys didn't understand that these shorts did not mesh well with boxers, so when our uniforms got assigned, some of the guys walked out of the locker room with their boxers poking out of their shorts. Some had also tried shoving them inside of the briefs, so their shorts were all lumpy.

Quickly they learned boxer briefs and bicycle shorts were an excellent combination for wearing under their uniforms.

A few years ago, we ran some laps of the running track at school in costume for charity. A couple of guys decided to run in just their shorts. They had some agreement with another group to have them try to steal them, and if they survived a mile, the chasers had to do some forfeit (I think it was put £20 into the pot), and if they lost, they would have to run a lap naked and put £20 in. They lost.

I'm only a 34C/36B myself. I am wondering, however, if that chart is referring to natural breast size, or also accounts for implants. I think the US would drop down to a C average, if that were the case.

Only 3% of women in the US have breast implants, it's not like we give them out at candy stores. Also the average breast implant is 300cc - 400cc, which generally results from a mid C to low D.

I'd think genetic predisposition and weight would be big factors.  Not everyone gains weight in their breasts, but I know that I do.

I had heard theories that drinking milk, particularly with hormones added, might be a cause of both early menstruation and larger breasts, I have no facts on that though.  I know that age of menarche can be influenced by overall nutrition, but I don't know that milk specifically has anything to do with it.

But a glance shows there to be some correlation maybe with dairy consumption:

I have problems believing Kat's map (re Finland). For example the female students here do not look much different from their counterparts in the US (IIRC) - at least if you take wider racial diversity into account.

Hmm. A theory occurs to me. In these parts a significant fraction of women gain weight in their later years, with the predictable effect on their cup size. As our age pyramid is close to being upside down, this probably has a statistically significant effect. The same is probably true in Russia, possibly also Sweden?

Observe that countries with a low life expectancy are "downsized" in this map. I wonder what the map would look like, if they would cover women within a given age bracket only? I expect that then we would see the effects of race (via overall body size) and standard of living (that extra weight shows here also) more clearly.

Right, I know this is off topic but I am saying it anyway. Please don't use the word coed when you mean female student. It is a) incorrect and b) kind of demeaning.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: pwhodges on 01 Oct 2012, 12:02
Webster's dictionary puts that meaning before the one that you and I are used to, merely marking it "informal" (and not even that in the big Merriam-Webster's unabridged); so I guess we'll have to suck it up.

The New Oxford American Dictionary marks it "dated", though the American dictionaries do not.

May, I apologize. I honestly didn't know that it is a demeaning term. I did guess that it is at least partly incorrect - at least it seems to me that it is most commonly applied to/at institutions that used to be only for male students, but then later reconsidered their admittance policy.

Anyway, I edited my post. Sorry about any loss of peace of mind.

I apologise too - it was an overreaction if it is still a legitimate word in US English. But the implications of the word (that women are somehow an addition to the student body) just bother me, especially as I attend a women's college and therefore there is no co-ed about it!
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: pwhodges on 01 Oct 2012, 14:26

Post by: Barmymoo on 01 Oct 2012, 15:19
I've seen it used to refer to female students quite a lot, and that was the context in which Skewbrow was using it. I just feel like it's reducing women to their status as "not-male", which is something I'm very touchy about!
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Redball on 01 Oct 2012, 17:27
Much of this was discussed in WCDT in early June. As I understood it, it referred to female college students as a hangover from a time when women students and women's colleges were a minority. It was certainly in use when I was a college student in the 50s/60s. It ought to become obsolete. It may hang on in print because it's a short word in a headline.

Observe that countries with a low life expectancy are "downsized" in this map.
Not really true in Asia, or indeed arguably outside Africa (http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/world-life-expectancy-map). Japanese and Singaporean women have the highest life expectancies in the world. South Korean women have a better life expectancy than women in the USA. Even in my homeland, female life expectancy is higher than in big-boobed Russia.

I don't know what it is about me than makes me want to test any statistical correlation anybody quotes. It may be that I am a huge nerd.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Skewbrow on 02 Oct 2012, 03:51
Au contraire. Is that not the way a scientific process is supposed to work. Observations. Theory. More observations refuting the theory. A new or a refined theory....

May be the Asian diet keeps women (and men) from gaining weight (and adding inches to their respective bust/waistlines)? So that in the orient the correlation between a woman's age and her cup size does not exist?

Of course, my brain is working overtime trying to salvage the bit of explaining average bra size using the distribution of the ages of the female population as a starting point (together with nutritional factoids).

Then again, it is probably not worth our while to try and come up with a comprehensive theory here.

I wonder what the average height/weight across these countries is, too. All of those red countries are known for having taller, larger (not fatter, just proportionately) people than, say, a lot of those countries in Asia. Same with Germany. And then there are a lot of people from those countries that moved to the US. (I don't know if this really applies with the northern part of South America, though.) I guess it also depends on where you store fat in your body, too. Some carry it in the upper body, some in the lower, and some carry it all over. That could explain why Africa might be lower - yes, the women are taller, but they seem to store more fat in the lower half of their bodies.

Thought of this again today as I was putting away laundry having dumped it on an unmade bed. The deep red underwear closely matches the sheets. Now all I need is a partner to appreciate (read: laugh at) it with me.

Unmatched socks ... Try fabric softener so they don't hide by sticking to other things, and search around any areas where you transfer laundry into or out of laundry baskets, and if you have full laundry baskets, check the entire route from the laundry machines for spills.

I just tie them together. There's also a ring with interior teeth that you can lock a pair into.

I save all of my single socks...I think I have some in my Sock Bag that have been missing their mate for 5+ years now. I used to keep them all in a plastic grocery bag and it annoyed me that it was such a permanent thing in such a temporary place. I'm finding it surprisingly hard to find suspender belts without going online, and even then I'm mainly led to adult stores. Stockings that come with those rubber things don't stay up, despite what they claim.

The only site I know of is in the US. Maybe search for a sock site? Also what exactly is the problem with getting them from an adult store?
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Welu on 24 Oct 2012, 05:13
I've no issue getting them from an adult store, probably gonna get from the online Ann Summers site. It'd just be more convenient if I could get them in town and there's no adult stores in town. I don't get why if a store sells stockings, which are in abundance where I've looked, it wouldn't sell some kind of suspender belts, or at least those knickers that have holders attached.

Hot Topic underwear (http://www.buzzfeed.com/amyodell/blackheart-is-hot-topics-goth-version-of-victor)

I left a pair of my socks as a comfort object for our late cat on her last visit to the hospital. She was unconscious when I dropped them off, and unconscious when I visited next, but had moved her head on top of them in some interval of consciousness.

I've lost weight and somehow gone up a cupsize and a bunch of my bras have bust so I'm looking at new bras.

Also I'm debating buying this:

It's just a fashion one so it won't pull in as much but I think it'd be good for a first underbust corset.

Oooooh! That's fun :-) I say go for it.

I recently signed up for a monthly subscription site called Adore Me. They had a groupon for $100 worth of stuff for $45 on your first purchase. Plus- there is another option to get your first set at half price. Of course it's hit or miss when it comes to style but I've found a lot of cute stuff in my size which is pretty rare. I think my favorite part is that you can actually search by size. I was sneaky and signed up from 2 different email addresses so I could take advantage of both deals. They have new stuff constantly....I just placed my orders last week and there are already new and cute things that I want.  :-\

I bought these (borderline NSFW? spoiler just in case):
(click to show/hide)

After all was said and done, $85. Way too much on underthings, but I needed the white one for the wedding and couldn't pass up the prospect of getting 4 cute sets for roughly $20 each. I'm still waiting on the plaid one but got everything else. Unfortunately, the nude set is too small but they also offer free shipping both ways so I'm not too worried. I'm still trying to decide if I want to remain a member after this month.....regular prices are $49.95 but as a member everything is $39.95 and after 5 sets, you get one free. Plus you get a free set for every 2 people you refer (*wink wink* lol).

I don't know if this is an appropriate thread to post this, but it's definitely related and I'd really like some advice.

I don't think there's anything wrong with spending money on lingerie if that is something that is a priority for you and it fits into your budget. Is there a compromise option - for instance setting yourself a budget of less than $40 a month (maybe $20?) to buy new stuff? That way you only spend money on actual purchases, rather than on the option of saving money if you do make a purchase. Presumably that $40 is in addition to the cost of what you buy - it would only be a saving if you bought four or five sets every month (I think my maths is correct there) and that's quite a lot of money too.

I am really happy that for the first time in my life, I've stayed the same bra size on two separate occasions. I'm measured every time I go to buy a new bra, which is not more than once a year as bras are expensive, and normally I've gone up a size. Now that it seems I'm staying at this size, I can buy online when there's a sale! I got two new bras a couple of weeks ago and one of them is pretty (the other is skin-tone for practicality), and they both fit! I hadn't really believed that wearing nice underwear can affect the way you feel about yourself but I do feel prettier when I'm wearing the fancy bra, so I will try to buy pretty ones in future too.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: lepetitfromage on 15 Feb 2013, 09:20
From what I've read, it works like this-

You are charged $40 for the month and that $40 is what you have to buy a set. You can choose to "skip" a month if you don't see anything you like, but you are still charged- then you have that additional credit carry over for the following month in which you now have $80 to spend (you can do this up to 5 months without penalty). I don't see the carry over thing being an issue for me, though....I already have 6 different sets saved in my favorites. If I decide to stay, I'm snatching up a cherry print corset next month.  :-D

Re: sizing- that is awesome! It really is amazing how much of a difference good underwear makes in a day. Whether it's fit, style, etc.....I can't help but feel good when I'm happy about what's underneath my clothes. On the flip side, the intensity with which bad underwear can negatively impact me is almost embarrassing. It's such a silly little nuisance, but if I have to tug on a wire, pull out a wedgie, shift this, push on that, lift those, tuck that back in...it just irritates the hell out of me. And then I feel stupid for getting so angry about underpants that it just gets ridiculous inside my head. :psyduck:
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 15 Feb 2013, 09:46
Little cheese: as a lady with a boyfriend who loves it when I wear lingerie, I say some of the cost is worth it. If there are no penalties for doing so, can you keep the subscription for only a month, cancel it, and get it again in 6 months or so? One only needs so much underwear/lacy things, and the more stuff you buy at once, the less likely you are to get a chance to wear all of it.

I wish I could shop online for specific-fit stuff like bras. I can generally get undies online, though plus size websites often have their own sizing schemes completely independent of the usual 6-7-8-9 which are annoying as fuck. I do have some awesome lingerie though, like this:
(click to show/hide)

Like 5 different babydoll-type outfits...

ANYWAY little cheese, I think the relationship issues might receive better advice from the relationship thread, though I do think that lingerie may help you start things up again. And you definitely have to talk and be honest with him!

And May, I am jealous. Mine have been the same size since high school. If only I could gain a cup size or two, I would be slightly more happy with my body.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Barmymoo on 15 Feb 2013, 10:21
You are thoroughly welcome to a cup size or two from me - I have to buy from expensive specialist shops and feel top-heavy. I'm currently a 32HH, which means that it's uncomfortable to lie down, run, wear strapless bras (they have to be basically industrial strength, which cuts into my skin) etc.

Once you've had something fitted, and if you stay the same size, you can buy the same style online again with reasonable confidence that it'll fit. That's my plan anyway!
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 15 Feb 2013, 10:28
I have an extremely hard time finding my size - I'm 42B, though occasionally I can make a 40C work, and they are so much easier to find. I've never been fitted, but I've measured myself and spent hours trying things on and figuring out what works. I feel guilty buying expensive bras because I don't have the inclination/time to keep them in their best shape possible.

The only place around here that I know does fittings is Victoria Secret, and they are both expensive and badly-made, from what my sister tells me.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: lepetitfromage on 15 Feb 2013, 11:29
I've had some luck with Victoria's Secret but not as much as I'd like. I got a fitting and they told me exactly what I already knew, so it was kind of a waste of time for me. It's usually not hard to find things in my size (except @ VS- only online and their online return systems blows), but they are typically either ugly or expensive. Have either of you tried eBay? A quick search comes up with quite a few cute bras in both your sizes! Obviously fit may vary, but some places have really good return/exchange policies. Plus, you could always just use it to find more ideas of lines that carry your sizes and look elsewhere if you're uncomfortable with eBay. (that site is my answer for everything lol)

Neko- thanks :-) That's a good idea. I bought 3 sets on one account so think I might just keep the subscription for another 2 months (until I qualify for my free one) and then cancel. I can always come back later if I want to and/or can afford to do so. I was on the fence even posting that question to begin with and I'm pretty sure I can get some good answers over in the relationship thread, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that. It was more of a "does this justify this expense?" sort of thing. As I said, things are improving, but at a snail's pace. This might just light the fire under my ass that I need.  :-P

Funny thing is- I think I get more out of the lingerie than he does! He enjoys it, but he also enjoys when I walk around the apartment in a sports bra and sweatpants- or a tank top and granny panties.  :-P

Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 15 Feb 2013, 11:38
The cost is still worth it if the lingerie makes you feel good. Part of the issue is that sometimes you haven't been interested, for various reasons - correct? Well feeling/looking gorgeous will help.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread

.....I need more socks. And underwear. Perhaps something other than dark blue this time...maybe.

(they have to be basically industrial strength, which cuts into my skin) etc.
Have you considered width extensions to the straps? Something to basically make the shoulder straps have larger area, thus distributing the weight over a larger area?

I believe she was referring to a strapless bra there.

It is very, very hard to find a strapless bra in a large cupsize which will actually support them. Have you tried a longline bra though?  The one I wore for my wedding did a good job, and my corsets do a great job and they are basically longline bras on steroids, but they come with their own mobility problems.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread

Yes, I was talking specifically strapless. My new, properly-fitting bras don't have straps that cut in, thankfully.

For what it worth, I think they charge €800 or so for a corset so they're doing ok in that regard.

Still, how or why someone would spend so much money on so little fabric is mind boggling.

Yeah I mean, I'd kind of given up on the whole bra thing, I never found a comfortable one, and I figured that hey, I don't actually need this stuff since my boobs are quite small. I knew the size was off, but not THAT much off, this is so weird! I've been wearing bandeaus and wireless bras (bralettes? Is that what they're called?) for a couple years, but now I'm kind of intrigued to find out what it would be like to wear a proper bra that actually fits. Not wearing a bra is very comfortable, and I like the way it looks, so whatever. Maybe at some point in the future when/if I feel unhappy about the way I look, I'll try.

I guess if they're tight enough? You can also get boyshort type panties that look like boxer briefs and they are adorable.

A bit of looser cloth where panties often end due to changing directions? I don't know what to call that joint.

Like how those pull straight in, but the ones below have a bit of a bend?

Just a random thought when it comes to them assisting with it, not that one couldn't still do it. *Shrugs*

the trick is to always wear underwear two sizes too small
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: TRVA123 on 21 Apr 2013, 17:37
Jesus christ, I followed that thing and ended up calculating that my actual bra size is a UK 30E, or US 30DDD/F. What the actual fuck, I've always gone for A cups... when I was wearing bras, I mean. I haven't worn a real bra in maybe two years. This is kind of a mindfuck.

Yeah, I went from a 36C to a 34 F/FF

I bought two bras in my size two days ago, and they make me look amazing! and no back pain!

Probably the best way to go is to visit a store that caters to different sizes and try on some bras, make a note of the bras that you liked that fit you so you can look for them on sale later/online. A good bra store will not use the Band size +4 measurement system, and will carry band sizes 28+ and cup sizes at least through J.

Ok, I'm back on the bra thing again because what in the actual fuck is going on with my bras/boobs?? I know we covered this on page one but waaaaaahhhhhh. I was going to put this in Vitriolic Letters but I think it's too Boob-y for that.

Dear Whoever Decided That Bra Sizing Needed To Be Such a Huge Pain in the Ass,

You suck.

I thought I was wearing the right size. So I didn't bother to read that Epbot article until a few days ago. It led (naturally) to me reading for a few hours about how bras are supposed to fit, where x goes, how to adjust y so that z doesn't happen & how you're supposed to put them on (I always though "Backwards" was the answer to that lol).

Apparently, my bands are too big and my cups are too small. Could have fooled me! BUT, the "gore" never lies flat. I have literally NEVER had this happen with any of my bras. I never considered that I might be wearing the wrong size, I just assumed that my boobs were abnormally heavy.  I've only discovered that it's an issue because the underwire started ripping through the last bra I bought for 45 freaking dollars. According to one bra sizer, I should be wearing a 34FF and/or H (!?!) using the same sizer but a different method of measuring, I get a 34K (WHAT?).

I tried the sizer @ VS's website and apparently, I have sized out of them. Even online.  :x

My question is this: for any of you who have tried the sizing guide on Reddit (linked from Epbot), did you bend over to measure or measure standing up?

HALP! I want a bra that I don't hate!
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: nekowafer on 17 May 2013, 09:15
It says to bend over at the waist to measure, but to measure again standing up and average the two if your boobs are particularly "pendulous". I averaged the two and the size made more sense. I'm thinking you should try it both ways, though. This method won't give you your exact size, it just gets you closer to what you should be wearing.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Welu on 17 May 2013, 09:44
I keep meaning to remeasure myself using those methods but it's hard enough getting my current size and I'm scared of what it will be.

.....ok, so then I should be wearing a 34J. I'm in a bit of disbelief.

YIKES.

I'm torn between finding something that actually fits or just making friends with my newly naked under wires.

I went from a 36C to a 34F/G. the 36C bras would give me terrible backaches, which has disappeared with my new bras. and my boobs look a million times better.

here is there list of offline retailers, it needs to be updated (the bra shop that they said was closest to me is no longer open.) but I think most of the data is accurate.

I keep meaning to remeasure myself using those methods but it's hard enough getting my current size and I'm scared of what it will be.

Same here.
My problem with the "wear the right size" system, is that I can't find bras in my "right" size.

Right now I wear a US 44 H because it is the best size I can easily find. I need a new bra soon though, so I thought lemme see what it thinks...

That calculator puts me at a UK 46JJ  averaged or 46KK bent only.
That is a US 46N or 46P.
n or p
If I stick with my 44 band size (because I am inbetween)  I have a US cup size of O or M
I've never even seen those sizes for sale.

With some searching I  found a 46N online... Still considering if I want to pay $50 to see if it makes a difference though.

It's called a garter belt/suspender belt because it goes around the waist or hips - it will never hold up pants or anything similar. It is only for holding up stockings of various sorts and looking sexy.

These are the ones I have: not nearly as sexy.

I found a cheapish bra in my new size and holy lord does it fit well. I did not expect there to be such a difference. My only issue is the wire pokes into my armpits a little because I'm that short. Will try a sister size in a smaller cup to see if that is better, if I find one in the relevant size.

Bluhhhhhhh, painful bras are the worst. I have one that has the underwire poking out in the center on both sides and every time I move the wrong way, it stabs me. And the sad part is that it fits me better than most of my other ones. Death to the angry undergarments!!!

It should also be noted that I am wearing -almost- my new size and it is still ridiculously uncomfortable. I don't think they make bras for boobs like mine.  :x

Reminds me of a joke...

Many years ago, a rather dapper fellow went into a lingerie store - high collar, bowler, spats, the whole deal.  The clerk asked if she could help him, and he said he wanted to purchase a brassiere for a lady friend.

"Certainly, sir; what size?"

"Seven and three eighths."

"I'm sorry, sir?"

"Seven and three eighths."

"I'm afraid that's not a brassiere size, sir.  How did you come by that number?"

"Why, I measured it myself!"

"May I ask how, sir?"

"With my hat, of course!"

LADIES! Let the grand tournament begin! Answer the question that males everywhere might heed the results. On your male counterpart if you indeed prefer this option in the bedroom (if not, please disregard this poll and flip to section seven, page 5912 of the human being manual for the correct documentation) what form of undergarment do you prefer?

A. Briefs aka the classic tighty whitey
B. Boxers aka room to breath
C. Boxer Briefs - aka the compromise
D. Something exotic
E. Commando

Well, I'm a dude who likes dudes so I'll answer this as well.
It really depends on what I'm feeling. Sometimes, i like guys to be in cute, colorful briefs. Same thing for boxer briefs. Boxers don't really do anything for me. And depending on the guy and the type, i can go for a jockstrap.

I haven't worn tighty-whiteys since...9th grade at least.  Except for a brief stint of one month in 2006 when I was at ROTC basic training, and that was only because other guys who'd been there said that they offered "better support" for all the physical training we'd be doing.  Like a schmuck, I followed their advice to a letter and brought only boxer briefs.

Yeah...boxer briefs to wear with uniforms that don't exactly breathe, in Alabama, in the middle of summer.  That...was a mistake.  For one, even though they were the right size, they still felt very constricting, and on top of that, their 'sealed' elastic hems essentially stopped airflow in already non-breathing pants.  This meant that the swamp ass was even worse since air couldn't circulate, and the briefs quickly turned grody and were just...ick.  Not helped either by the fact that we only washed our clothes once while we were there**, and I'm still convinced that the driers didn't fully dry our clothes (again, Alabama in summer), so putting even a 'clean' pair of briefs on still felt...yeah...

Burned those boxer briefs after I got home and have resolved to never wear any kind of briefs again.

**-Sounds gross, but you really don't notice the smell after a week or so, until a few captains come to your hallway for inspection and the first thing they say is, "Smells like a herd of horses farted in here."

Tighty whities are not the same as boxer briefs. Which one do you mean? Either way, ugh.

^Boxer briefs.  To me they basically are tighty-whiteys (ok, this pair is blue, but ignore that) with very short leg extensions.

Post by: nekowafer on 16 Jun 2013, 13:55
Right, that's why they're boxer briefs - tighty whities are briefs. So boxer briefs are briefs with legs.

Yes they were. My dangly bits (just btw, this is one of the funniest euphemisms for male genitalia I've ever heard :-D) felt like they were constantly lightly pressed together. Not painful but far from comfortable to wear. Ever since then, the only underwear I use are boxers. I'm wearing black-and-red ones right now. Oh, and just a bit of TMI to horrify (or delight? who knows..) you guys: Since I'm already in bed, that's the only thing I'm wearing. :-D

Ugh I need to buy more bras. Both of my day-to-day ones (my sports bra is fine) have broken in the space of a week; the underwire is poking out quite painfully. For now, I'm wearing them with a plaster stuck over the sticky-out wire so that it doesn't cut into me. The problem is that replacing them requires ordering online, because no shops round here sell my size, and that will cost £55-60. I need to just do it, really.

I went to Lane Bryant yesterday because I needed an off-white camisole, I dug through the clearance underwear bins to see if there was anything I wanted.  Turns out two of the styles in there matched a bra that I own.  This is the first time I have ever owned a matching set, so fancy!

So I have the opposite sock problem of everyone I know. I have so many! I haven't bought socks in years and still I have a stupid amount of pairs! I hardly even wear them, since I usually wear tights in winter and sandals/trainers without socks in summer, and I counted 14 pairs in various colours the other week. I can remember buying 5 pairs of black ones maybe 6 months ago, but this is getting ridiculous. How on earth.

I have a crap ton of socks, but that's because I'm kind of obsessed with them in colder months. I have pairs that I wear with specific shoes (I need thicker ones for a pair of boots that are slightly too big), for specific temps... Socks are awesome.

Kat, I feel that way too! I have one matching set that fits right now and I have one where the bra has gotten too small and it makes me sad and want to buy a matching bra again, but I can't really justify it right now. I like wearing the matching set when I dress up - makes me feel fancier. ^_^ I need to go buy a strapless though...and new spanx... Need to wear them to a wedding in a couple weeks.

When I was in the US last year I discovered American Eagle long cut boxer briefs which are just the most comfortable thing I've ever had on my nethers. I've decided now to just order them in because you can't get them in Australia. Now I tend to wear black almost exclusively so I've decided to start wearing brightly coloured socks and underwear (and to match colours as much as possible). I often get annoyed that men don't get sexy underwear (women get sexy underwear, men just have to be sexy already which is counter to the generally accepted myth that the male body is not attractive and creates a cognitive dissonance but that's for another thread) so I'm at least trying to make my underthings interesting.

So.....aforementioned boob container came in the mail yesterday. It is NOT GOOD. And it is getting returned.

It's supposed to be my "real" size and it still isn't working. I almost started to cry after I put the thing on. It was big, ugly, uncomfortable and still didn't fit right. It was the "Lauren" by Freya in a 36G.

In the last 6 months, I've tried all of the following sizes and met complete and utter failure with each one:

38D (I was wearing this regularly before I tried finding the Right Size)
36DD
36DDD
36G

By process of elimination, I think I'm going to try a 36 or 38F and see how I fare with those. Generally, I'm having 4 problems: gaping at the top of the cups, gore not lying flat, band/underwire digging in and underwire poking through the center gore. With the Freya bra specifically, it was just....huge. Well, huge in the cups but tight in the band. It came almost all the way up to my armpits, all the way around and was just way too...tall...in the front. If I wore even the slightest V neck, it would have shown. For reference, under bust measurement is 37 and bust measurement varies from 42-44, depending on what they feel like doing that day.

I'm currently wearing a 36DDD and it's the best fitting bra I have but it's still not right. The cups feel ok, but the gore is still not lying flat and the band is so tight that it leaves deep marks when I take it off. This goes against what I've read about band sizing!! I read that if the gore doesn't lie flat, you're wearing a size in which the cups are too small but the band is too large. Well.....the cups are constantly feeling too big and the bands are constantly feeling too small! I've tried "balconette" styles and I really like them but it's hard to find ones in the size I need that don't look ridiculous or behave more like a full coverage bra.

Also, the section of the bra where the cup meets the strap does not lie flat either- I can fit 3 fingers between the fabric and my skin. I don't know if this just "happens" or is another indicator that things are Not Right.

I'm about to just give up and start buying XL sports bras for day-to-day use.

Have you been professionally measured at a proper shop? Once you've found a couple of styles that fit well, you can order online but it really is worth going to get properly measured - even if it means travelling a bit of a distance - because as you've discovered there are so many variables! I've never bought a bra without having it fitted; when I get round to ordering the new ones I need I won't be trying them on because they're the same as the ones I've got, but I know they fit.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: lepetitfromage on 01 Oct 2013, 08:04
The only time I was measured was at Victoria's Secret last year and they are bumbling idiots that put me in a $50 bra that didn't fit. It felt like it fit initially but then a month later, I was getting stabbed with underwires.

I think my main worry about getting fitted is feeling pressured to spend a lot of money that I don't have or having that prior incident happen again.  :-\

I feel guilty about going and getting fitted and then buying a bra elsewhere but I just can't afford to buy in a specialty store.
Title: Re: The random underwear (and socks) thread
Post by: Barmymoo on 01 Oct 2013, 08:08
Yeah no, don't go to Victoria's Secret - I don't think they are properly trained (they might be, but I'd imagine they're salespeople rather than fitters).

The problem with getting fitted one place and buying in another is that unless it's an identical model, the fit won't be the same. I'd advise getting one or two well-fitting bras and paying more, instead of getting several cheaper ones that don't fit. But I feel your pain, I pay at least £60 a time to get just two bras that fit and I have to replace them reasonably frequently, at least every year.

I'm just trying to find something at this point that doesn't cause me physical pain. I need it to tide me over until I can afford to buy a really good one. After all my bills are paid, I only have about $20 left each week. Ugh.

Freya definitely has some variation between styles, which is disappointing. I got fitted for a Deco at a bra shop, and got another at Nordstrom before I found them online (shipping is from UK but whatever it takes!). I also have one of their sports bras But then I found a pretty style in my size (!) but it has this ribbon along the edge that creates a "double boob line" on the cup itself! I still wear it, but the weird shape shows through the camis I like to wear this time of year.

Jockey has a new bra out that they fit you for. It might be worth looking into. Also, a lot of specialty bra boutiques have sales racks that you can look through.

Victorias secret, Hanes, and other corporate bra stores generally don't carry any cup size above a DD. Lane Bryant doesn't carry any band size below a 36. This makes it incredibly annoying for my 34E/F self to find a bra that fits.

One thing, when you do get a bra that is your size, your muscles have to readjust to wearing that type of bra (one that is held up by the band instead of by the bra straps). It might take a week or so for your muscles to stop complaining. after that you should be fine.

I wish I could find thigh highs that 1) fit my legs and 2) stayed up. Super jealous, Valdis! I'm loving the first pair.

Little cheese, I feel your pain. I think my real size is a 36F or 38G, but I have only found one in either of those sizes that fits right. Can't wear it to work, though, because it's a french balconette bra and having a job that routinely requires bending over does not mesh well with a bra where the top half of it is only lace. Most of the ones I'm wearing now are 40DDD and two of them are no-wire. (I wear the no-wire ones for work - they've proven to be the most comfortable for my job.) I'm definitely a fan of balconettes - I've had the best luck with them and I've heard several times that they work best for people who hate or have troubles with underwire. And I hate to say it, but you'll probably have to go to a specialty shop and just cave in on one or two expensive bras and just try to take good care of them. They're expensive up front, but they're built to last unlike shitty VS ones.

I flippin' LOVE Busty Girl Comics!

Linds- thanks for the input, I'll definitely plan to try a balconette. I'm pretty sure I have what's referred to a "full on bottom" boobs and I've read that balconettes are the best types of bra for that particular classification. Not that I'd wish this annoyance on anyone, but it is nice to know I'm not alone in this battle, so thanks again to all of the ladies that contributed help, insight and "support". Heh.  :-P

In other news, I'm boycotting HerRoom.com because they are big offensive jerkfaces that told me that my tit shape is a "tennis ball in the bottom of a sock"*.

New bras! So much better and comfy! Although because I'm short they're gaping quite a bit at the top and the underwire pokes in my armpit a little when I'm sitting. Adjusting the straps helped a little.
Also got another bra one cup size smaller but the same band it seems to fit the best. Less gaping at the top but the gore doesn't sit as flat. Although now I'm sure of my size and what's comfy, I can shell out from something expensive and pretty.

Bringing this thread back to give a strapless bra recommendation!

I got this bra (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006ZM9SDW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00) to wear with my staff do dress last month and it's so, so good! I'm a 38G and this thing works so well for me. I was able to dance and nothing fell out and it makes my cleavage look amazing. It's actually probably the most comfortable bra I own, I have it on right now under a top that doesn't show the cleavage but it still has a good boob shape look.

My only issue was I was planning to get a FF bra because I'm too short for G cups and was only able to get a F cup at the time. It seems the fits are accurate though because it's about half a cup too small (for my bigger boob, fits my smaller boob perfectly). It sits higher than my other bras but it feels natural now I'm used to it. I have a top heavy boob shape so I can't say how this would work on other ones but this bra is so good I needed to talk about it.
