Panel 1) Of course Marigold would be organizing a tabletop game of some description (I can't really identify it)

Panel 2) Took me until reading the forums to understand what was going on. Hold on to your naturally curly hair there, Claire! Or you'll, uh... get a scare? :P

Panel 3) Either Clinton is really good at swindling people, or Steve just wanted an excuse to get drunk. Probably the latter, I think.

Panel 4) Some party games/activities just fall flat the instant you start them. This particular one probably needed Dora to make it truly interesting for Tai.

I'm thinking maybe Shadow Hunters (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/24068/shadow-hunters). "Last werewolf" implying more than one wouldn't make so much sense, but there is a werewolf in it, and it sounds like they were playing the same type of "players have secret identities and affiliations" type of card/board game.

I was going to ask where Dora was, but its probably her hand near Hanners.

Also surprised that Tai didn't try to get more people to go skinny dipping.

I suspect that's right; I am gonna play that version on Wedneday.

Our version includes some additional roles, like the Drunkard (is so drunk he doesn't realize he is dead, ie he dies one round later than he gets bitten) and the Star-Crossed Lovers (if one of them dies in any way, the other dies as well. Can be fun if one of them is a werewolf and the other a townsperson.) If the Star-Crossed Lovers are the last to survive, they win the game as well.

Skinny dipping can be fun with two people, if it is the right two people. If it is the woman you are involved with/interested in, it can be VERY fun. Tai is doing it wrong.

This raises the question: where has Dora been all through this montage?

Unless she is the disembodied hand in Panel 1.

I like the neat little detail of Hanners' drink being on a coaster in panel one.

Also, I'm not certain about this but would Emily's haircut be that shape if she'd just put it up in a ponytail and chopped behind/in front of the knot? That might explain the tidiness of the cut.

Not wrong at all, it is a great hairstyle. She managed a clean cut of the ponytail, that's a tough move to pull off. It usually comes out uneven and choppy.

I imagine it was a matter of her going "hey let's go skinny dipping!" and then just went for it without realizing no one else (except Gabby apparently) was coming along.

That's most likely what happened. May be she should have waited a bit longer to initiate it? After the gang has consumed a bit more judgement impairing substances.

I, too, hope that the party will keep on going for a while longer (in terms of strips). At least it looks like they will be spending the night there - may be the weekend? Angus may still be fit to drive, but it is apparently getting very late. Whatever Jeph decides.

Or am I just a weird white girl who overheats? I get really warm when I drink. Which is fairly rare. (Because it doesn't taste good to me, I'm on an antidepressant, and alcoholism also runs in my family. Gotta be careful.)

None of the parties I ever went to resulted in calls of drinking games - they were already planned into the night's entertainment.  Seriously, no one goes into a STNG drinking game without adequate planning or prep (ie. laying in enough beer).

I'm guessing she looked around the room and saw that she would have a softball since Hanners is to her left.  Based on were the twins are sitting she probably thinking, "Hell Yeah, this is going to be awesome!"

Where Emily is sitting I'm believe this will in fact be awesome. I the others don't mess up the current seating arrangements if they join in. I also hope that Tai is to the left Dora and not vice verse.

Yes, it can happen to anyone, but is most common in those of Asian ancestry.  It has to do with how the alcohol is metabolized.

The problem is, she won't let go, but that's not uncommon with family.  They always reset you to default.

Actually, it looks like she's just drinking water. I mean, it could be vodka or gin (or some other clear booze), but there are no drunk bubbles or anything over her. Then again, no one looks particularly drunk except for Emily, so maybe Faye and the others are drinking but not to excess?

Blood rushes to the skin when you drink for some reason I don't remember.  Something about capillaries.  That's why you feel warmer (if it's seriously cold, it's a bad idea, but the worry about "drinking to warm up" doesn't apply if it's only freezing or so), but for some reason it only really shows up visibly in Asians.  I guess white people always look a little flushed anyway?  Dunno.

And the flushing thing? Yeah, it is real...
[....] I get really warm when I drink. Which is fairly rare. (Because it doesn't taste good to me, I'm on an antidepressant, and alcoholism also runs in my family. Gotta be careful.)

Are.....are you my doppelgänger? Or are there a lot of girls who get warm when they drink, but don't like the way alcohol tastes, and take antidepressants, and have a family history of alcoholism? If the latter, I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE!
Doppelgänger implies that one of us is evil, I think? Are you evil? I'm pretty sure I'm not...

Oh, and regarding yesterday's game with the werewolves, I play Werewolf (the one that's like Mafia) with my geek friends all the time. I never even considered that it could be a different game. Werewolf is really popular among people like Marigold and me and is therefore the most likely option. People even play it at anime conventions.

I take advantage of that post to state what I forgot to post yesterday: there was a convention in my city last week-end and I spent quite some time there playing a French version of Werewolf with random strangers, and not only that was a lot of fun, but it made yesterday's comic extra-funny to me.

Am I the only one who is secretly hoping that we'll get some backstory on Gabby at some point during this whole party thing?  That whole skinny-dipping-with-Tai thing yesterday was totally out of left field, given that we haven't seen as much from her since a few strips after the interns came into the story.  As much as I love Emily being adorably weird and the bizarre dynamic Claire has with Clinton, I'm curious now.

So, what's the etiquette for when the hostess passes out?  Keep playing the game, or everyone leave quietly after cleaning up and tucking her in on the couch?

So, what's the etiquette for when the hostess passes out?

From my experience, there's usually sort of a chain of command.  So if a host passes out happy and not covered in vomit, the festivities continue.

Also, I approve of Emily's adorkable affection for Marten.

That's what I've read.... and I can't shake off the uneasiness, my eyes always do weird things to me.

But on a happier note... Cute comic but I hope Emily won't take another glass. Also, from my experience when the host passes out: We usually make it comfortable for him/her and if we wanna continue the party then we do so but not as loud.

It's been a while, but isn't the initial victim the couple that sneaks off to engage in acts of physical intimacy?  Hanners isn't in danger there, and has a high probability of being the virtuous Final Girl - or the killer.

As for Emily, at least the gang isn't the type to break out the sharpies for some impromptu body art....

Also when I first read this strip after I'd just woken up this morning I thought Marten was saying it was his turn to be barfed on.  Though that's happened to him twice and to Faye only once, but I'd forgotten about the second time it happened to Marten.  Taking turns being barfed on seems really freaking weird, but it totally made sense in my head at 5:15 in the morning.

I haven't really been much for this strip ever since Marten and Dora split up, but I check back every now and again.

Maybe I'm getting old and cranky, but I find it odd that a bunch of folks in their mid-to-late 20's (Marten has to be at least 25 by now, right?) would find it at all appropriate to go hang out and get hammered at one of their undergraduate interns' lake houses. But this is QC, so there probably won't be any real ramifications for any of them, other than Dora and Tai getting it on in a closet somewhere.

Took me a minute to realize Emily cut off her ponytail. The first time I looked at it, I thought she had some sort of giant weird bottle or something, so it was really distracting when I thought her hair changed for no reason, until I re-read the last few. It would have been funnier if Penelope were called out as "next," though (where'd she go, anyway?).

I don't how that's a big deal. The normal Gang is only like years older than they are. If they're old enough to drink, they're old enough to hang out with other's who can drink.

...would find it at all appropriate to go hang out and get hammered at one of their undergraduate interns' lake houses...

Some quick notes:
1) The title of this comic is "Questionable Content" ... to expect that the characters would restrict themselves to "appropriate" behavior is to pretty much completely misunderstand the premise of the comic  :-D  That said...
2) As has been pointed out, the interns aren't undergrads. Also, I think Tai and Marten are staff, not faculty, a distinction which I think would color whether they as characters would worry about things being Appropriate or not.
3) If we insist on it making sense plot-wise, Tai's having blackmail material on the trustees would presumably still be in force. Its power will persist until Jeph decides it's funnier/more interesting for her not to have it.

Agreed.  Could just be a super senior as well.  5 year track to pick up something else or just took a smaller than normal number of credits each semester.

I'm guessing she's about Hanners age.  22.

Tai's youth isn't referred to, so much as her size. That reference to her degree is very dubious evidence. She could just as easily be referring to the usefulness in her future life of a liberal arts degree she has already been awarded, or to a Master's she's working on following a Bachelor's in something else. I am not familiar with how colleges in the USA work, but I would be very surprised of they're employing an undergraduate to teach, run their library, hire staff (Marten), and supervise interns.[/i] I'm pretty sure an Australian uni would not do so. I'm thinking mid-twenties at least.

According to this one (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2281), Claire is 24, Clinton is 21, so I presume that Emily and Gabby are the same age as Claire.

And yes, the party is an overnight one, Saturday night to Sunday morning here (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2288)....though I'm suspecting that Emily is going to wish that Monday comes quickly.

And Riccostar ninja'd me for that second one.

Tai's early discussions of her romantic entanglements refer to "drama on [her] dorm floor" (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=726).

Though some colleges do have a designated dorm for grad students (hell, I live in one right now), they tend to feel more like silent study-bubbles than the kind of place where you'd find that sort of drama.  Given the previously referenced future-tense degree, it seems far more likely that she's referring to an undergrad dorm, thus further implying that she's probably in her early 20s.  And it's becoming more common for undergrads to have TA-variety positions at schools, so that in of itself doesn't make it implausible.  Jus'sayin'.

Just from experience... if any of you ever end up at the University of Oklahoma, and they tell you that they have a "graduate student only" building in their on-campus apartments, do not believe them. It is all lies. My roommate and I are literally the only graduate students in this building. Everyone else is an undergrad who likes to party very loudly every night. On the other hand, I learned that they recently stopped advertising the apartments as a "graduate student community." Found out when a visiting professor made fun of their website for referring to it as an "upperclass community," not realizing it means juniors/seniors, not upper-class/rich people.

(Sorry, I suppose this should go in the vitriol thread in the Chatter board, but it's a little bit relevant to kirtlandwarbler's comment)

He just mentioned that Marten and Faye were "around 25". I think Marten was 24 when he started dating Dora, since Dora was 26 and was older but not considerably so.  Which is funny, now that I'm thinking about it, because when I was 24 I dated a 26 year old for pretty much the whole year of being 24.  It ended better than Marten/Dora.

I used to go on a music course and hang out with the "staff" of the course - the tutors and pastoral staff, who were in loco parentis for those of us under 18. I'd grown up with them as friends so it wasn't at all considered odd for me to be 14 and sitting around with my 25 year old friends playing a drinking game (I wasn't drinking though, the line would have been drawn before that point).

I don't think it's inappropriate at all, really. The only way it could be would be if Tao were to have a relationship with one of the interns. Certainly at my uni it's not all that odd to go out for a drink with your supervisor or go round to a lecturer's house for dinner.

That just made me think - what if Steve is actually Marten's BROTHER - but no one actually realizes it?

Yet another amusing thought, and according to this (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=395) could mean a few things:

That Henry married one or more women before he married Veronica,

AND/OR Henry married one or more women after the divorce/coming out,

OR he got married to other men before proposing to Maurice.

I think I prefer the first option, that he had a string of unsuccessful marriages with women who wanted kids, and maybe Steve and Marten are half-brothers but don't know it yet.
(click to show/hide)

Very silly, but still, amusing.

EDIT - Or that 'blur' in Veronica's life is when she had Steve.

Even then, just compare Marten's face and neck from that comic to the last couple.  I didn't realize it until it was pointed out, but yeah, his face and neck used to be thicker.  I kind of like the old style - he still looks skinny, but not almost-emaciated like he does now.

Hmmmmm.
Can somebody with superior archive-fu give me a rough ratio of
people whose coupling is teased for a while, then happens : people whose " " " " " ",  then doesn't happen?

It happened recently with Marten and Padma (which at the time seemed pretty unlikely to actually happen) but then it also sort of happened with Marten and Lt. Potter (which actually didn't happen).

I view Dora and Tai as more of a building up of enough confidence by the characters than a tease from Jeph though. I don't know. :psyduck:

Of course, we could SKIP all the teasing. Next Monday's update: Claire and Marten take Faye's advice to heart; Faye and Angus realize they now have to find a different spot. :P

Though not a mod, I have seen several people get banned over the years.  It is not something done lightly, nor is it something for which the adjective "fun" could be used.

The swash of water (or the rote of sea), the peaceful night, the starlit sky, maybe the sunset or the moon, and the soft coolness that may rise from the water, making the prospect of getting closer all the more appealing?

As to the jetty - not so much.  Preferred the porch myself as the chairs were far more comfortable.

So, what as Claire about to say?

"I'm...

...really sorry about my brother"?

...really one of your friends now?"

...impressed at how you can put up with damn near anything"?

Maybe this is poll fodder - any other suggestions?  You!  Keep it clean, and wipe that smirk off your face!

I think she was going to say, "I'm kinda jealous." The whole vibe of the conversation was of someone who isn't used to being around so many fun loving people and being accepted like a true friend. I think that's the reason Claire decided to step outside and get some air and would explain what she is talking to Marten about. Of course, here comes Faye and Angus getting ready to have sloppy kisses cutting Claire off. Gotta love it. Also where the heck is Gabby!?

Calling it now.  In a role reversal, the black person won't be the first to die in the cabin by the lake when everyone is asleep.  Instead, it will be the black person killing everyone this time.  She's biding her time.  The ones who slipped up in mentioning her hair go first.  Or she could just be hiding and concocting an evil prank.

Marten's speech balloon in panel 4 is *really* badly placed. Rule 1 of lettering - don't put the tail so someone else's face is between it and the speaker!

Maybe lakeside mosquitoes are some obscure fetish?

If you try to spray on mosquito repellent, does Emily come along and say "Use mine!"? What does she apply instead?

Maybe Faye's alcohol fumes will stun the mosquitos before they approach?

(Yes, I don't know how to spell "mosquitos". Spell check seems to like both spellings.)

I was thinking along these lines, but for some reason that seems (to me) to be too bold or revealing of a thing to admit at this point. Like she'd be too concerned about sounding "pathetic." Then again, it is Marten she's talking to. Tai pretty much had that conversation with him not too long ago.

Either way, it does sound like Claire is another "stray" being adopted. How many of members of the QC crew actually had friends (as in people above acquaintance level) before we met them?

Cosette (Luna)
Padma (Renee, Elliot)
Meena (Dave)
Ellen (Nat, Amir)

Um.

None of these are really main cast, though.

Correct, but most members of the main cast has connections to another member prior to meeting everyone else (eg Marten-Steve; Dora-Raven). It's just interesting to me that Emily doesn't seem to have any "friendship baggage" so to speak, and that Claire doesn't seem to have any either (unless you include Clinton... but she wouldn't ). Of course, I'm not talking about new characters spinning from ones we just met... that'd be crazy. But no mentions of previous friends.

New friend to Marten.  Even before the boob flash (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=108)...

However, it is a good example of a pre-existing friendship, as well.  One could argue that Marten was brought into that small (two-person) circle, and so we have two binaries (Dora/Faye and Marten/Steve) that wind up in a different orbital pattern (initially, Faye/Marten with Dora & Steve in the "outer rings").

This of course shifted later... about two or three days after the talk, as I recall.

Marten had Steve, but we've never been able to figure out where he met him.

Steve didn't have any friends, nor did Faye (having just moved into the area). Sara was a co-worker, Dora was her boss (and Dora apparently didn't have any friends)...

Y'know, I think you might be on to something there.

EDIT: I thought a second time about Dora - she did have a "friendship" with Raven, but it was pretty much the "I really don't want to be around you and 'your friends' anymore" type of friendship when we first met our Blodwyn.

Luna was essentially Cosette's roommate, which may or may not have turned into a friendship because of that. Same with Ellen and Nat.

Yeah I actually remember one of the first strips we say dealing with Dora and Raven was Raven asking Dora why she hadn't come to the Coven in a while. I think she had friendships with people back then but like she had said before, she was going through a phase so we don't even know if she actually had any meaningful relationships before Faye.

Well, when I moved here I didn't have any existing friends really. I'd had friends at school but there'd been two years in between. I had friends in those two years but I had a big bust up with most of them after discovering a huge period of betrayal and dishonesty (it was a far bigger deal back then, but I still feel that it was beyond the pale for them all to collude in one person's unacceptable behaviour). Of the newer friends, only one has really stayed in touch at all and only sporadically at that. So it's not impossible. The USA is far bigger too - didn't most of the cast move a huge distance to get to the CoD town?

Yep; it's a convenient journey that's undertaken with light baggage.

I'm surprised Angus and Marigold have not been mentioned.  Slightly less so that Sven and Wil haven't.

Then there's Dora and Raven, obviously.  And Marten and Steve.

And Tai's dorm ... provided she's actually part of the crew ... and unless that counts as a level below ...

And all this is ignoring the various family members, of course.

At the start, Marten and Faye's moves accounted for them needing friends.  Beyond that, I think the forum is overthinking it (really?); the characters can perfectly well have parts of their lives that we don't see.  After all, the same happens in real life - my colleagues at work, and in the choir I sing with, have lives I know nothing about beyond what I happen to share with them.
