And yet another week has started - with the cartoonist struggling to try and sit up.
So we stroll down memory lane for the best "non-sequitur" in QC, so far?
-
Lets get my clit pierced!
-
Muskrat muskrat muskrat muskrat!
-
Muskrat muskrat muskrat muskrat!
This so much! My favourite QC quote ever.
-
Muskrat muskrat muskrat muskrat!
Agreed
-
"Muskrat muskrat muskrat" was an absolute non-sequitur, because it doesn't logically follow from anything.
That being said, "Cump" is my favorite, because for reasons I can't explain it causes me to break into hysterical laughter every time I think about it.
-
Betraying my lack of archive-fu here: could we have references? I can't remember most of these...
-
Everything from "rghfrgl" to "beep boop" have come since the first of the year (though Daaaaaaaaaaang is a long-standing one that has appeared numerous times in the strip).
Cump is from strip 1836.
Muskrat is from 2302.
-
So they are. Thank you. :)
-
I can't think of the Yes one without thinking of the little hats. And i can't think of the little hats micro-arc without laughing really freakin hard.
-
The "FFFFFFffffffffff" one has also been used frequently, mostly by Marigold.
EDIT: Also, I'm sorry for those who chose "Other" but didn't choose "Muskrat". It was easier to do that than add "Muskrat" and have all sorts of issues.
-
Looks like we're getting guest strip, at least for Monday.
-
Disappointing, but I certainly can understand. I hope Jeph gets better soon. :(
-
DAAAAAAAAAAAANNG! is never used as a non-sequiter. It's always used as an appropriate comment!
-
See, this is why Jeph should keep a buffer, so he doesn't back himself into a corner.
I'm not disappointed though, guest strippers usually have a humorous and interesting meta take on events that most of us don't have the art skills to express.
-

Don't discriminate, regular strippers can have interesting thoughts too! They are not limited to being a lust object!
-
Muskrat Muskrat Muskrat Muskrat WAFFLES!!! :-D

Yeah, but the regular stripper for QC is such a tease!
-
Muskrat muskrat muskrat muskrat muskrat blood for the blood god muskrat muskrat muskrat...
Hi! I'm Randy!
-
Guest strips again.......forums might wanna get ready to pinch hit for another one.
-
My dad had some pretty bad back pain, years ago. Second-hand experience doesn't count for much, but I know Jeph is in for a pretty rough ride for at least a couple of weeks...
Edit: Oh yeah. For this week's poll "beep boop" won it for me.
-
Don't know how old Emily Partridge is, but hat tip to her for reaching back into *my* childhood for part of that introductory spiel. ... Anyone else (U.S., 1970s and maybe 1980s) remember that Armour Hot Dogs commercial?
-
whatever that thing on merigold's neck is totally reminds me of the female cenobite (https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/6124661504/h1B171E80/).

I came here to post exactly the same thing, but you beat me to it.
Sigh. How nice to begin the day with a long-forgotten memory from childhood.
-

i remember it from a couple of simpsons references in the 90s. and i think it might have been one of the jingles playing on the radio in demolition man
-
Well, it's a good thing Swaggy is so marketable, since Jeph now owes a million dollars...
-
Swaggy reminds me of Cartoon Head from Ideal:
Hopefully less psychopathic.

That's where it came from! I remembered hearing that line, but I couldn't remember the rest of the song or what product it was advertising.
And I fully understand Jeph's pain. I had a back injury 26 years ago that still bothers me at times. With that kind of injury, sometimes all you can do is lie still and hope you don't have to sneeze or cough because that will send you into spasms of intolerable pain.
-
Amour Hog Dog Commercial (http://www.oldtimeradiofans.com/old_radio_commercials/Armour_Hot_Dogs.php)
-
Oh yeah. And the occasional misstep or stumble.
There have been times, walking the dogs over the last few weeks, where I just had to stop and curl up in a foetal position on someone's lawn for a few.
It's getting better. Slowly. More PT today...

Don't forget the poll dance in the forums.
-
Ah, Swaggy's great. I'd love a plushy or something.
-
Spoilered since this isn't the pointless thread, but today's strip reminded me of this sketch.
-
Swaggy is totally this generation's Poochie
-
Do people really dress like that in 2013? I should leave home less often.
-
Yes, sorry, I loved Cump but I don't consider it a non-sequitur.
-
If you'd like, you can do the WCDT thread next week and come up with the poll topics.
I'm kinda running out of steam with them, myself.
-
Do people really dress like that in 2013? I should leave home less often.
it depends what group of society you're looking at. Yes, a lot of them really do, but not all (thank FSM)
-

Dibs. I almost did it this week, actually, but I didn't want to be rude and take your task.
-
Jwhouk is kind enough to always make it, but it's hardly official. Anyone can make the thread, and sometimes they do. (I subbed for Jwhouk a few times in my pre-mod days)
-
Guest strips... Sometimes you get the lift, sometimes the shaft...
-
I'm not sure what that means.
-
I'm not sure what that means.
Substitute 'elevator' for 'lift.'
-
Oh. Right. I mean, I guess an empty shaft is bad, but a lift doesn't seem that exciting either. Anyway, at least now I'm pretty sure she didn't like it...but it would've been helpful if she said why?
-
Oh. Right. I mean, I guess an empty shaft is bad, but a lift doesn't seem that exciting either. Anyway, at least now I'm pretty sure she didn't like it...but it would've been helpful if she said why?
Well, compared to stepping into the empty shaft and falling to great pain/death, an elevator is much preferred when the doors open. Assume it's taking you to the penthouse suite or something nice.
Though if Akima doesn't like it, I have to agree, possibly because there are references I'm not getting. Swaggy. The pants. Cat overalls. A They Live reference. None of it works. The first panels make it clear what the parody is, but I don't understand the parody itself.
-
It's basically if QC were written by a marketing executive. Not sure what "They Live" is, but yeah.
-
When you're not getting any of the references, you're officially old. :-D
I'm old enough that I don't care that I'm not getting the references. It's my natural environment. "Indie rock band that only a few thousand people ever heard of? Whatever, kid." Yeah, I'm that guy.
-
You want old?
Annette Funicello died today.
I remember Annette Funicello. I actually thought she was cute when I was growing up (despite her being OETBMM).
-
OETBMM
I'm not sure what that means.
-
OETBMM
I'm not sure what that means.
And the cycle of confusion and missed references continues. The forum is filled with sounds of "whoosh!" "Whoosh!" References flying over peoples' heads. Arrows missing the target.
What does OETBMM mean? Google turns up zilch.
I'm not old enough to remember Annette Funicello outside the Skippy peanutbutter commercials.
What's not to understand about the strip? It's making fun of selling out, and the hipster-ish feel of the comic in general.
-
despite her being...one entertaining teenager...beyond...Mickey Mouse.
wtf lolwut
-
Probably "besides"...but wait, is that actually what it is or did you just make that up? If the latter...well done? But now I'm still curious.
-
OETBMM = Old Enough To Be My Mother.
Never seen that acronym before, but I figured it out from context.
-
Oh...right.
-
OETBMM = Old Enough To Be My Mother.
Never seen that acronym before, but I figured it out from context.
Well, now you have seen it.
I just didn't want to actually utter it.
-
I didn't pay much attention to the strip. And I'm a little old for Annette, though she wasn't YETBMD.
-
I wonder what the minimum age difference is for someone to be "old enough to be" one's parent.
-

yeah, i can see it. not my type but certainly pretty, at that age.
-
I wonder what the minimum age difference is for someone to be "old enough to be" one's parent.
I suppose it depends on a whole bunch of things: The culture, your understanding of biology, maybe a little lust -- 15, 20 or 25 years? When I think of "generation," I think 25 years.
-
18-20 years difference. Though that number becomes shorter the further back in time you go.
My mom was actually 29 when she had me, so there's that.
-
Pintsize's OBEY hat and the look on his face made me laugh out loud. Great guest strip. (http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/8740/pintsizeobey.png)

BLARG...swaggy is gonna make me sick. I thought I escaped that...
-
So ... this is the QC version of "Billy takes over the drawing board" of Family Circus.
I like it.
-
Yelling Bird offered to do a comic for me. I can't wait to see what he came up with!
You... you just let him roam free on your canvas like that?
:psyduck: Come on, man.
But for real, wow it sucks that your back is so messed up. I can't imagine not being able to sit up straight enough to draw, it must be horrible. :(
-
Hmmmmm... Well, yes, that seems to be a Yelling Bird comic strip all right.
Pintsize will still give birth to mandolins.
Rydym i gyd yn gobeithio bod eich cefn yn gwella!

The other guest comic seems to be gone. Confusing.
I think I only got the Swag, Yolo and #hashtag references yesterday.
-
It's QC's version of Groundhog Day
-

If you it "previous" from today's comic, it skips that one. If you hit "next" on Fridays comic, it shows it.
-

I didn't get any of them. (Well, YOLO is one of the shirts Jeph is selling.)
Maybe that is because we didn't have TV commercials when I grew up.
-
I got a lot of em. Mostly all refs to recent memes with a few older ones in there, but I tend to keep up with them somewhat.. mostly because I like to be able to troll people who use them too much, incorrectly, or absurdly. Thought the guest strip was a nice one, really.
Yelling Bird QC Captions. I effin' loved it.
-
I, for one, am relieved that Yelling Bird kept it so classy. You know, as opposed to posting a large, far too close-up drawing of his cloaca or something similar. That's what I really would've expected.
-
but it would've been helpful if she said why?
It doesn't really matter, but... The expository wall-of-text section told me, at length, what the joke was supposed to be, but then nearly all the references went completely over my head so the strip never delivered. YOLO was obvious, but otherwise the only thing I picked up was the They Live (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_live) cap. A low-budget SF movie reference from 1988? How edgy!.
-
I thought the site had been hacked... until I spotted the "Yelling bird offered to do a guest strip" explanation.
First the DDOS and then...

Same here, I really expected something disgusting. Like the one time Yelling Bird showed us his favourite internet pictures (which I just spend 15 minutes on trying to find it, to no avail).
Edit: And of course, 2 minutes later I find it. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2182)

Trying to appeal to hipsters doesn't really appeal to anybody.

Now I want a guest strip drawn by Pintsize . . .

I actually found yesterdays guest strip to be really funny. I liked how it was poking fun at all the fads and superficial aspects of the "hipster culture".

I actually found yesterdays guest strip to be really funny. I liked how it was poking fun at all the fads and superficial aspects of the "hipster culture".
But I have no idea what any of them are, aside from what Akima mentioned, and only one of those two is associated with hipsters to me.

Yelling Birds middle name is Trolling.
-
I've long accepted I'm going to "get" fewer and fewer jokes and references as time goes on. Such was the case with the Emily Partridge guest strip. That's all right; it's on me to keep up, not on the world to slow down for me. I did find, however, that not "getting" all of Partridge's references didn't diminish my appreciation of the point of the strip; it might have even enhanced it -- if I understood the point correctly, that she's satirizing strips that are created to appeal to market trends with super-topical references.
If not, well, leave me to my illusion.
-
I'm with DSL on this one, but Akima too - it felt a bit like I'd gotten the shaft rather than a lift from the days comic, but I appreciated what was going on even without understanding it.
Rather like the early comics where, as a person twice the age of the original "target" demographic, I'd never heard of a single f**king band Jeph ever mentioned.
And "Swaggy"'s the perfect name for a current generational mascot - as is four loco product placement for preteens...
-
Consider, though, that the shaft might have *been* the point. Now I'm thinking about some of those 1990s animateds that depended heavily on super-topical references ("Goodfeathers" in particular) and are now painfully dated.
Although, given the propensity of people on the internet, YouTube in particular, to dredge up old memes and themes because retro is cool, y'know, does anything really die (even when it should)? I remember seeing "They Live" in theaters but thought I was the only one who remembered it.
-
I like the early comics where, as a person twice the age of the original "target" demographic, I'd never heard of a single f**king band Jeph ever mentioned.
I liked 'em too, and I started reading them at 19 and still had no idea who the bands were (were they even all real bands?)
-

I didn't get any of them. (Well, YOLO is one of the shirts Jeph is selling.)
Maybe that is because we didn't have TV commercials when I grew up.
#hashtags are tags on Twitter that you include in your post to kind of put it in the same category as other posts. They are prefaced by a # symbol (called a "hash"), thus the name. People use them for indicating that a post relates to a certain topic, such as a current event like a storm (#Kathrina), also for ongoing issues (#LGBTRights), for moods (#happy, #sad, #depression), for celebrities (#SeanConnery), and, more recently (and relevantly to this comic), to express what they are, if relevant to the post ("Being forced to study again #ChildOfAsianParents")* and how they feel about something ("Romney forced to end career #wellServedJustice").
Swag: I am not really sure what that means, as it started somewhat at the end of my high school time, but it means as much as "luck/fortune", but also positive events stemming from positive characteristics such as confidence or "smoothness". ("John gets all the girls. That's because of his swag."). Somewhat similar to what "coolness" used to mean some fifteen years ago.
YOLO: "You only live once". Also originated as a hashtag on Twitter, I believe. It expresses the notion that life is fleeting and should be enjoyed to its fullest by, say, finding the courage to talk to "that one girl" or going paragliding while drunk and naked. Jeph is obviously poking fun of it with the shirt he sells. I think most of it's notoriety comes from people making fun of it, but it's hard to tell on the Internet.
*with due apologies to our Asian forum members.
If you it "previous" from today's comic, it skips that one. If you hit "next" on Fridays comic, it shows it.
Well I'll be damned. Thanks.
-
If you'd like, you can do the WCDT thread next week and come up with the poll topics.
I'm kinda running out of steam with them, myself.
Apologies... No offense intended, was just making conversation... If you'd like someone to spell you on that task, I think you'll find takers, myself included.
My only suggestion would be that you pick someone specific and DM them so there won't be duplicates... they can then pass it on similarly.
-
Now I want a guest strip drawn by Pintsize . . .
Yes, please.
{BrandoVoice]"The horror, the horror"{/BrandoVoice}
-
Duplicates have never been an issue, if someone else makes one and it's done right (proper format with a poll) we'll use it.
-
Swag: I am not really sure what that means, as it started somewhat at the end of my high school time, but it means as much as "luck/fortune", but also positive events stemming from positive characteristics such as confidence or "smoothness". ("John gets all the girls. That's because of his swag."). Somewhat similar to what "coolness" used to mean some fifteen years ago.
Actually, in this context, "swag" means "branded merchandise given away as free advertising." Swaggy wears a lot of swag.
-
I understand most of this because I have friends I visit quite often who have multiple kids of varying ages and have seen most of this played out in real life..
Yes, that's pretty much what swag means, but it doesn't have to be free, just clothing/accessory merchandise of some sort. Kinda the way someone presents themselves, really. So, someone's swag could be: Flat-billed baseball cap sideways, wearing running pants halfway down the butt, having like 20 chain necklaces of different length around the neck, and rockin' the tank top, while always walking with a shoulder leaned and talkin' like a thug even though they live in Beverly Hills.
And YOLO is effectively a short way to say "Carpe Diem" and is terribly overused in current teen culture for doing something stupid, but not regretting it. In context, you could say "Dude, totaaally broke my leg and ruined my swag trying to dive from the balcony into the pool but hit the bushes, but y'know, YOLO, brah."
Hash tags used outside of Twitter is increasingly common as well. My friends' kids like to do it quite often, even in verbally.. her child once said in response to having to do chores "hash Ihateyoumom".
The blackboard was an easy way to ref current music, where in hip hop, almost every single seems to feature (abbreviated feat.) another artist.
Tight pants for guys and flipped up baseball cap bills with words on the bottom or just flattened with a price sticker are a trendy clothing fashion these days for kids..
Yeah. she just threw as many trendy memes/styles as she could find into one comic strip to make it appeal to the teens. Such as a marketer would be apt to try for getting those teens to purchase merch and increase hits for adverts.
edit: wanted to clarify a couple points and holy typos batman..
-
And in an amusing coincidence relevant to this conversation, with my last post my forum title became "Obscure cultural reference". Emphasis on "obscure".
"Hi, I'm Randy! I'm a bandicoot! I live in Australia! I'm an obscure cultural reference!" :psyduck:
-
My favorite part? "Salteens"
-
Just noticed that today's Yelling Bird strip is out of sequence (the image is in the "random" directory (http://www.questionablecontent.net/random/2420yb.png)), so this Friday's comic will end in a 4 instead of a 5. :psyduck:
-
Okay, look, I have once or twice told people to Google things they don't understand on this forum, but even after doing so this doesn't make much sense, and wouldn't make any if we weren't whacked over the head about it for the first 5 panels. I'm 24, and for better or worse I'm around a lot of people 16 to beyond my age. This isn't a generational thing, it's a coherency thing.
Swaggie is from Justin Beiber, which means it's only relevant to teenage girls and their mothers, not muscled up mice. He doesn't even have a sideways cap or pants halfway to his ankles. YOLO was on life support before the end of 2012. Damnitstrue is a twitter account with life tips, nothing like the comic context. They Live! has undergone pop cultural osmosis, but it's by no means trendy. Anime isn't a major thing with any teens of great marketability, though some may argue with that. Four Loko is an East Coast energy drink, though it's available elsewhere, and was only trendy in 2010 when it almost got banned.
Pulled pork, cat overalls, pants and balls make no sense that I can find.
Comme des Fuckdown actually works, being a currently trendy street clothing line for whomever is classless enough to wear the word 'fuck'.
Long story short, I'm not seeing the appeal to most categories of teens OR hipsters.
And that's my analysis.
-
Until recently, I thought "swag" meant treasure and was used exclusively by pirates.
-
Until recently, I thought "swag" meant treasure and was used exclusively by pirates.
Well, one of it's current day usages is to refer to stuff you get at conventions and such that's being handed out by the palletful (allegedly Something We All Get).
-
I'd say that's the old fashioned usage rather than a current day usage (free stuff). And "Something We All Get" is just a backronym, it's just swag, it stands for nothing.
-
Until recently, I thought "swag" meant treasure and was used exclusively by pirates.
I thought pirates had "booty", and burglars had "swag"? The connection with scooping up free stuff at conventions, conferences etc. is obvious...
Probably connected to the stereotypical burglar's sack, in Australian English a "swag" is a bundle of personal property, as traditionally carried by itinerant workers, and a "swagman" or "swaggie" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swagman) was a such a person. They are part of our national mythology:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled:
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me?"

-
Swaggie is from Justin Beiber, which means it's only relevant to teenage girls and their mothers, not muscled up mice. He doesn't even have a sideways cap or pants halfway to his ankles.
I mentioned that the current usage of swag is effectively the way you present yourself. I added to that a style of presentation beyond just the clothing or accessories you present yourself with. How you walk and talk and act can be your "swag". You could be wearing nothing and still say "Why'm I wearin' nothin'? S'cuz my swag." Older usages exist in excessive forms. Urban Dictionary has most of them. Google has the rest.
Heh. So we even analyze the guest comics this much. Must've been once hell of a guest strip =P
-
So was part of the joke of the guest strip that it was pretentious marketing, not actually in touch with the trends it was pushing?
EDIT: Tai, for everyone's sake, do _not_ give Emily ideas.
-
Looks like Pintsize got into the markers again...
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwvazMc5EfE
Yup
-
...is it bad that my first thought was "why is Tai in bed with Marten?"
-
From personal experience, even permanent marker comes off the skin with a bit of scrubbing, but even if it didn't you'd think they'd have taken time to grab a long sleeved shirt instead of, say, a tank top.
...is it bad that my first thought was "why is Tai in bed with Marten?"
Dora is secretly Marten's adopted twin sister, so nope. She genetically mutates into a Bianchi when she leaves her hair alone and it goes blonde. It's a pretty lame superpower.
I'd say that's the old fashioned usage rather than a current day usage (free stuff). And "Something We All Get" is just a backronym, it's just swag, it stands for nothing.
I saw it in an article just two weeks ago about PAX East, so it's still going. I said allegedly, as in unverified, as in I didn't believe it to be the case, so why does it feel like you corrected me?

I was talking about Swaggy specifically, not swag generally. Stop overanalyzing my overanalysis!
Nah, controversy =/= quality, or The Passion of the Christ would have been Oscar winning.
-
I think the deal with the pants was that some of the youth likes to wear really baggy pants (sometimes also quite low-hanging), while others wear jeans so tight that they would be more befitting to a male stripper on a bachelorette party.
So was part of the joke of the guest strip that it was pretentious marketing, not actually in touch with the trends it was pushing?
We are not sure, that's why we are over-analyzing :-D See, I had understood a couple of references, I just thought it was so overloaded with lingo from various subcultures that it wouldn't appeal to any single group. That would be like heavily mixing British English, Irish, Australian and American slang if your target demographic is the English-speaking world.
her child once said in response to having to do chores "hash Ihateyoumom".
*facepalm* Fittingly to the lingo topic, I think I just got some Fremdschämen (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fremdsch%C3%A4men).
Incidentally, Germany has "youth word of the year" elections. "swag" and "YOLO" were the winners in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Although there is the caveat that such choices usually don't represent all of the youth culture.
Edit: Did anyone else notice the "SWAG" in today's comic?
-
Since you ask, yes.
-
Is it bad that my first thought on seeing the guest comic was "Tailsteak? I thought he was driven from the internet, never to return, for the high crime of bringing a webcomic to a satisfactory and logical conclusion!"
I then proceeded to follow the link, whereupon I was outraged to find a comic in full color. Outraged, I say!
-
We are not sure, that's why we are over-analyzing :-D See, I had understood a couple of references, I just thought it was so overloaded with lingo from various subcultures that it wouldn't appeal to any single group. That would be like heavily mixing British English, Irish, Australian and American slang if your target demographic is the English-speaking world.
Like, totally righto you chav. I heard a furph that some eejit rode a bodacious wave off that willy-willy.
-
the Tailsteak guest-comic is TOTALLY canon now you guys. I declare this and make it so.
-
Four Loko is an East Coast energy drink, though it's available elsewhere, and was only trendy in 2010 when it almost got banned.
"Energy drink" is an understatement, and it actually did get banned, then reformulated after the ban to make it no longer an energy drink.
You see, most energy drinks aren't alcoholic. Four Loko was a malt beverage (12% ABV, even, in a 23.5 oz can - so, about as much alcohol as four normal 12 oz beers) that was turned into an energy drink - post-ban production removed the caffeine et. al.
-
Two words for Tai and Dora - methylated spirits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol). Of course that wouldn't be nearly as funny.

I'd be willing to back this up.
-
...is it bad that my first thought was "why is Tai in bed with Marten?"
Logged in JUST to say this. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Marten & Dora are pretty much twinses with different hair and genitalia.
-
Keep in mind that that was even joked about in universe, re: Marten and Dora having to be careful to have different hair styles.
-
Honestly my first thought was "is that Steve?" I guess now I see what Akima was saying re: lift vs. shaft.

...undrinkable...

Oh, you can drink it, sure. Just make sure you have multiple organ donors on hand in the next 4 to 8 hours.
-
Pretty much every guest comic that's ever featured Dora has made her look weirdly masculine. It makes me appreciate Jeph's talent even more; I know it is easier to draw your own characters, but it does seem that the ability to draw subtle femininity/androgyny is not so common.
-
I've certainly confused Dora and Marten more than once in cartoons, although you tend to rapidly realise your mistake from context.
It's nice to see a strip (albeit a guest one), talking about Dora's tattoo, it seems to have rarely been mentioned, excepting the referenced weenie roasting (<fx:wander over to Wikipedia to look up exactly what a weenie is> So, just a hotdog? Why not call it a hotdog then?)
-
Why not call it a frankfurter? One's no less correct than the next.

Even if you're generally good at drawing females, Dora screws you up. Ask Dave Kellett. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1973)

Ok, 's your eyesight.
-
Eh, her eyesight's already shit, so why not?
Re: today's guest strip. Not a fan, but it got me reading Leftover Soup and I'm enjoying it so far, so that's a plus.
-
Today's strip is cute, I think. Although isn't that Marten's room?
-
I don't always care for the guest strips but I did like this one.
-
Why does she have the flame tattoo?

I'm on a run of people correcting me* in great detail when I wasn't wrong to begin with. It was banned in some states, but a federal ban never happened; the FDA issued a strong warning that without major changes it would be banned, and it was changed before that could go into effect.
Geez, next thing I know someone is going to say "Dora is NOT Marten's separated twin sister, we were told so here and here, and her roots are blonde anyway."
*Unless it was a general statement rather than a specific response, which I was not adept enough to discern.
-
I'll grant that it didn't actually get banned by the FDA, but states banning it technically does count as a ban, and I didn't say it was federally banned, just banned. ;)

Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled:
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me?"[/i]
Have you read Bill Bryson's version of that?
-
So, Tai, I have to ask: What kind of permanent (or washable, for that matter) marker is labeled on the cap and not on the marker itself?
And yes, I know there probably is such a marker sold somewhere, but if you go googling to find it you're taking my little joke way too seriously.
-
Eh, her eyesight's already shit, so why not?
Re: today's guest strip. Not a fan, but it got me reading Leftover Soup and I'm enjoying it so far, so that's a plus.
It caused me to jump into an ill-advised 4AM archive binge. Last time I did that, I ended up following some no-name comic about music geeks and funny robots, I doubt anybody here has heard of it.
-
The big full-color pupils in tailsteak's guest comic remind me of early QC.

Quantifiable Concerns?
Nah, that one's just a ripoff of another webcomic.
You know, Woyce and Jacky.
-
You have that backwards. Woyce and Jacky is a ripoff of Looking for Grouper which is itself a ripoff of Quantifiable Concerns.

They're all so webcestuous. I mean, look at Nothing Negative and Babes with Trebuchets.

Re: Today's comic - Last time she was singing about the Patriots, but she isn't this time. I wonder why. Glad Jeph's making comics again, though.
-
That trickster looks younger than before, but that's just a trick!
She's not even a fairy. She's probably Coyote, masquerading as a fairy.
No wait, she's Nudge, in the guise of Coyote, masquerading as a fairy!
... actually, I think it is the less emphasized make-up that makes her look younger.
And that is probably just due to Jephzibah's developing art style ...
... he tricked me?!
-
Emily is so easily entertained. It's cute.
But Claire's gave in the last two panels, especially the last one, are just priceless.

Re: Today's comic - Last time she was singing about the Patriots, but she isn't this time. I wonder why. Glad Jeph's making comics again, though.
Obviously, Jeph is a Patriots spy, trying to throw us off his trail. He's probably hidden his Superbowl ring as well.

Fairies trick people, and Emily was tricked by someone ... Ergo ... um ... (Claire is giving Emily the stink-eye because Emily's syllogism falls apart on faulty premises. Because Emily.)
Welcome back, Jeph.
-
Those must be some powerfull pain meds that Jeph is taking.
-
My god! What happened to Emily's hand?! (3rd panel)
-
Left hand clasped atop right hand, atop non-fairy's head, is how I read that.
-
Comic titles aside, I'd say this competes with 1708 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1708) for most adorable QC strip.
-
I don't think there is anything wrong with her hand
-
I think Amitloaf just didn't realize there were two hands there (one atop the other). Easy mistake to make. Also, welcome to the forum, Amitloaf!

I can't read today's comic without laughing...
Classic Emily :)
-

I'd say 1709 is cuter than that one. :-)
But today's is indeed fair competition.
-
The fairy is pizza girl. It all makes sense now!
-
Let her go Emily.
Your license has expired and she's over the size limit as well.
-
Is there a catch limit, also?
-
D'awww, Emily wished for world peace.
-
HAH! She's so easily amused. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm pretty sure today's strip is another Azumanga Daioh reference.
-
Emily sure is physical. How did that not get socially stamped out of her by now?
-
I missed that the fairy was an agent of the Patriots the first time through.
-
Westrim - why would it? And Mars - la-li-lu-le-lo.
-
"Who are the patriots?" - "The la li lu le lo?"
-
Emily sure is physical. How did that not get socially stamped out of her by now?
Probably 'cause she's as tall as a tree and people are too intimidated to tell her no.

Don't answer that.

I think Amitloaf just didn't realize there were two hands there (one atop the other). Easy mistake to make. Also, welcome to the forum, Amitloaf!
I think Amitloaf has hand and arm confused. Because Emily's left arm is translucent. It's in front of the wing.
-

She's secretly Susan Storm? Hmmm. Faye could be the Human Torch, Marten could be Mister Fantastic (he's kind of stretchy) and Pintsize would just have to be The Thing. In the interest of observing shipping restrictions, ignore the familial relationships.

No it's not. Her arm has to go behind the wing if its going to come up at that angle without bending it back out of the way.
-
It's the fairy wings that are translucent. Though probably not actual gossamer. ;)
-
Sorry, I meant to say "there is one arm which is not colorfilled. The arm I mean is the one that is drawn to be in front of the wing. But you can see through it."
-
I really like doing Emily comics. Emily is weird.
-
Isn't the fairy essentially invoking the Liar's Paradox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liar_paradox)?
Fairy: "Fairies don't grant wishes, they play tricks on people."
Emily: "Tricks? What kind of tricks?"
Fairy: "Well for instance, I'm not really a fairy".
... or is it closer to being an example of Epimenides paradox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epimenides_paradox)? I'm not good at dealing with the logical exactitudes of whether it's still amusing if she's playing a trick on someone, but just because she can, not since she's really a fairy. :?
Anyway, we know real fairies are vindictive little bastards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Worlds_%28Torchwood%29), not the fluffy things that this portrayal suggests. :-D
-
They weren't called the Fair Folk because they actually were.
(See here also PTerry's various observations on the subject in Lords and Ladies.)
-
Fairy Girl is now a recurring character.
She is also the little sister of Pizza Girl. (This is my head canon and you should respect that.)

Does Penelope have siblings? I forget if it's been mentioned.

Only in fanfic.

Sorry, I meant to say "there is one arm which is not colorfilled. The arm I mean is the one that is drawn to be in front of the wing. But you can see through it."

It's only the Liar's Paradox because of a logical fallacy. I forget the name of the fallacy, but bascially it's assuming that P=>Q is equivalent to Q=>P, which it isn't. "All fairies are tricksters, therefore all tricksters are fairies." Only if you make that mistake can you then reason "I'm not a fairy, but I tricked you into thinking I was, therefore I'm a fairy."
-
Yay, logic!

Iceland's elves returned kindness with kindness, and Ireland's fey folk were said to deal fairly with those who dealt fairly with them.
-
Aye, fairly, which is why they have such a terrible reputation.
-
After a while there was the muffled sound of someone shuffling across the floor within, and then the door opened a crack. A suspicious eye was visible in the gloom.
"Yes?" said a small and quavering voice from somewhere beneath the eye.
"Are you grandmother?" Granny Weatherwax demanded.
"Are you the taxgatherers, dear?"
"No, ma'am, we're - "
"- fairies," said Fairy Hedgehog quickly.
"I don't open the door to people I don't know, dear," said the voice, and then it took on a slightly petulant tone. "'Specially people who never does the washing up even after I leaves out a bowl of nearly fresh milk for 'em."
[...]
The grandmother watched them with interest. After a lifetime of believing in them she was seeing fairies for the first time, and it was an experience. Granny Weatherwax caught her perplexed expression.
"Put it like this, ma'am," she said, in a despotically reasonable tone of voice, "how would you like to be eaten alive by a wolf?"
"I don't think I would like that, dear, no," said the hidden grandmother.
"The alternative's us," said Granny.
"Lawks. Are you sure?"
"On our word as fairies," said Fairy Hedgehog.
"Well. Really? All right. You can come in. But none of your tricks. And mind you do the washing up. You haven't got a pot of gold about you, have you?"
"That's pixies, isn't it?"
"No, they're the ones in wells. It's goblins she means."
"Don't be daft. They're the ones you get under bridges."
"That's trolls. Everyone knows that's trolls."
"Not us, anyway."
"Oh," said the grandmother. "I might have known."

Seems like the Midsummer Night's Dream kind of faries, not the Peter Pan type. I should also put forward my great appreciation of both Claire and Emily.
Is anyone else getting #2422 as 2421 also? The yelling bird bull-semen sandwich strip seems to have disappeared.
-
Comic strip of the year.
-
I want her as a character...
Does "STEAMPUNK DAMMIT" count as a non-sequitur comment?
-
Is anyone else getting #2422 as 2421 also? The yelling bird bull-semen sandwich strip seems to have disappeared.
Yes. The guest comic from Emily has become 2422. There was a previous issue where it would skip it (return to 2420) when clicking "previous" from 2422 but would show correctly if you hit "next" from 2420. Now 2421 (Emily's guest strip) has apparently morphed itself into a clone of Tailsteak's.
-
The yelling bird bull-semen sandwich strip seems to have disappeared.
But if you go through using next or previous the guest strip appears twice (it's also listed twice in the archive). Maybe he'll notice, or someone will point it out, and he'll fix it.
-
I want to be best friends with Emily! *swoon*
-
The trick at this point Claire is to smile and back away slowly.
-
And keep backing away until you're next to Marten and then you talk about what happened.
-
@Method: :-D
-
Emily sure is physical. How did that not get socially stamped out of her by now?
Probably 'cause she's as tall as a tree and people are too intimidated to tell her no.
Only since we've seen her. She didn't pop out of the womb like that, and she probably wasn't kept in a cocoon until age 15.
Though considering what else we've seen, I wouldn't put it past this universe.
Westrim - why would it?
Because a fair portion of people react badly - painfully so - to strangers or even acquaintances or friends invading their personal space.
And keep backing away until you're next to Marten and then you talk about what happened.
They should grab a lunch together and talk about it!
-
And keep backing away until you're next to Marten and then you talk about what happened.
And be damned sure Pintsize ain't around to hear it.
-
Claire and Emily do not seem destined for friendship. Claire is too weirded out by Emily's behaviour, and she's also quite intimidated by her. What Emily feels is, of couse, an unknown, but I can't see close friendship in their future, sadly. I love them both!
-
New comic's up.

Don't lose hope! They've also had a ton of interaction with each other, more than the other "library group" characters (other than Marten, of course) so there's gotta be something clicking there.
I've been kind of wishing since the party arc that Claire, Emily, Hannelore, and Marigold would form a little friend-group. I think their personalities would make some really interesting dynamics, what with Claire and Marigold being more grounded while Emily and Hannelore are more odd. Plus I really just want to see more conversations like Emily and Hannelore have on Twitter.
-
Good to se a bit of classic banter between the girls. Let's just hope Jeph manages to avoid any more physical trauma in the overseeable future, so he gan get back to frustrating us with Marten's lack of a love life.
Warning - while you were typing a new character has been introduced. You may wish to review your opinion on the comic.
Damn it!
-
Marigol more grounded
Hannelore more odd
Seems backwards to me.
-
What about Raven ?

What about Raven ?
What about Raven?
@Comic:
Wow that was ... flat.
But at least Dora's face in the penultimate panel is funny. :-D

I wonder what "Honey" "Buns" are.
A combination of something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike honey, combined with something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike buns.
-
I wonder what "Honey" "Buns" are.
I expected Urban Dictionary to come up with an answer, but it didn't (other than the uncontroversial obvious).
-
I thought this was a guest strip for a minute - might be JJ's injuries, but the art seems *really* off.
-
I wonder what "Honey" "Buns" are.
I expected Urban Dictionary to come up with an answer, but it didn't (other than the uncontroversial obvious).
You either have a different understanding of "uncontroversial" or you aren't searching hard enough...
-
Man, I can't believe Faye fell for that ...
... again (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1403)!
-
I feel like Dora is soooooo much older than Faye in this strip. Is it just me or does Dora feel older to you lately? I've got a feeling that she's been written purposely older ever since she broke up with Marten, but today she just feels old.
-
Faye doesn't really strike me as a "live on a barge" sort of person - "crazy lady living in a shack in the woods at the end of a lonely road" sort, maybe.
-
You either have a different understanding of "uncontroversial" or you aren't searching hard enough...
Hmm - I'm sure Google didn't show me that last time. Ah well, it's known that search results are often tailored to what they think you want or ought to see rather than what you asked for...
I feel like Dora is soooooo much older than Faye in this strip. Is it just me or does Dora feel older to you lately?
She's always been distinctly the oldest; she runs her own business, after all. But I guess at times she has come over younger because she interacts so easily with the others.
-
It's just that I feel like the age difference is getting more and more pronounced every day.
-
I was thinking the other day we hadn't heard anything of the kitty lately...
-
Why do I get the feeling that Jeph genuinely reacted this way after somebody e-mailed him a question about why Mieville hadn't appeared in so long? "Mieville? Who's... Oh shit, I forgot that Dora had a cat!"
Warning - while you were typing Dora got older. You may wish to make a joke about that.
-
What about Raven ?
What about Raven?
Yessssssssss. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnn.
Please.
She's funny !
-
She could also pull off a little hat.
-
As I said, I am still waiting for the meeting of Emily and Raven and the subsequent collapse of the universe and its replacement by something even more bizarre.
-
Claire and Emily do not seem destined for friendship. Claire is too weirded out by Emily's behaviour, and she's also quite intimidated by her.
Not necessarily a roadblock to being friends. I'm on pretty decent terms with some guys who used to bully me. :-P
Well then, I dunno what to tell you (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1696).
Oh, Hannelore. You're so relatable.
-
Raven + Emily with Tai moderating the debate whilst high on LSD = ultimate positive feedback loop of weirdness. Eventually, they start emitting enough strange quarks to reenergise the morphing grid and become the new yellow, green and pink rangers.
-

He's a sort of Rabbit (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Gus+Honeybun&hl=en&tbm=isch) (Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gus_Honeybun)).
Mieville rarely gets a lookin, which seems decidedly implausible, cats will generally get there paws stuck into everything they can.
I presume he's supposed to be an indoors only cat? This seems far more common in the USA than it is in the UK, where most cats wander in and out as fast as they can get the door opened for them (or use their cat flap).

Sure, me too, actually, but combined with her reaction to Emily's weirdness, I can't see it happen. Hope I'm proven wrong, though.
Warning - while you were typing a new era has dawned. You are now an anachronism.
I knew it! :x

Are we talking Tron 2010 style rectification here?
-
Sleep deprivation isn't odd, just bad for ones health.
Well, sorry, but I'm not going to track down 20 different links showcasing the variety of Hannelore's oddness, because it's always been a defining trait of her character. You're just being pointlessly contrary.
-
There was girl in my college computing class that was afraid of puppets - so we set her PC wallpaper to Gus.
Hang on, are you claiming he's not real. :-o
I assumed he'd retired to a burrow on a Tor, somewhere on Dartmoor. :-D

Why do I get the feeling that Jeph genuinely reacted this way after somebody e-mailed him a question about why Mieville hadn't appeared in so long? "Mieville? Who's... Oh shit, I forgot that Dora had a cat!"
Mondays strip is 4 panels of Mieville eating cat food.
It will be heralded as the greatest comic across the entire internet.

cats are evil
-
Mieville walks by himself, and all places are alike to him.
Kipling was seriously off when he wrote that. Cats have detailed and rigid ideas that different places are for different things. For example, our late cat was slow to agree to get petted anywhere other than in The Petting Chair.
He made up for it with "Mesopotamia", which is chillingly applicable today.
-
Killing Steve wouldn't even be the worst thing he's done.

I'm afraid Jeph has run out of things to do with Raven that interest him and that she's fading away.
-
Old physicists don't fade away, they just get more uncertain...
Oh, and honeybuns;
Basically a cinammon roll with a tad too much glaze;
However, there are so many other colloquial usages... not the least being a reference to a sweet derriere.
-
Is it just me, or does Faye seem smaller?
-
Yeah, she's been shrinking for a while now.
-
They've clearly been popping her in the tumble drier, after she's showered. :-D
-
Well we know she's been exercising more.
-
Pintsize has probably been secretly siphoning fat off to make soap. How do you think he affords some of the crap he buys? I don't see Marten giving him an allowance.
-
Faye is losing weight because the comic is slowly looping back towards the beginning. Soon everyone will be stick thin, and Marten will be without a girlfri- oh no, it's already begun!
Marigold more grounded
Hannelore more odd
Seems backwards to me.
Well then, I dunno what to tell you (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1696).
Sleep deprivation isn't odd, just bad for ones health.
Well, sorry, but I'm not going to track down 20 different links showcasing the variety of Hannelore's oddness, because it's always been a defining trait of her character. You're just being pointlessly contrary.
Hey, I wasn't arguing, just expressing that I had a different opinion. Living in your own filth with rats is a lot weirder to me than being OCD, etc. Disagreeing doesn't equal looking for a fight.

Muskrat? Muskrat, Muskrat Muskrat! Muskrat!!!
(but seriously, little hats)

Claire and Marigold being more grounded while Emily and Hannelore are more odd.
There was, after all, that incident in which Marigold was grounded (by Hannelore!).

Department Of Kicking Your Ass?
-
Yes, Steve's employer.
-
We haven't seen Steve in a while, come to think of it...

Last time was the lake party, I think. Perhaps he is now on a mission to examine Hannelores method of transportation?
-
Maybe Claire's ass-grabbery injured his gluteus maximus and he's been in recovery ever since?
-
He was able to sit down for the cereal-eating strip.
-
I completely forgot about the hilarity of the cereal strip, but if of two minds of that should actually count as an appearance or not.
-
As far as Steve appearances go, the lake party would be pretty recent still.
-
has Faye lost weight?
-
Or a limb?
You have her card key, right?
-
She's now got a better way to meet her emotional needs than Pepperidge Farm cookies, so it's plausible character development. It's too bad Jeph has started getting irritated with questions about it.
-
It is now that I remember why I like Dora. Such a beautifully flawed fictional character. <3
has Faye lost weight?
Jeph never seems to know how he wants to draw Faye. She started off thin with the old artstyle, and maintained that size up until the beginning phases of his current artstyle. Then, out of nowhere, she's thicker and I'm like "Wait, what? Since when?" Now it looks like the old Faye is making an appearance, though her upper body looks quite out of place with those thighs...
There's this one comic in particular where Faye is wearing a yellow shirt at the CoD that highlights exactly what I mean, and my mind keeps coming back to it when I realize how inconsistent Faye's size has been. I think this is back when Ms. Pritchard was around. I may just end up looking for it.
EDIT: It's not this one. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1704) Big arms and gigantic breasts. I think we can pretend it was this one (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1227) though.
Old Faye had a cuter head too. And those arms. <3
-
Jeph has said on various occasions (most frequently with reference to Dora, but also to Faye and others) that he has clear ideas of the characters in his head, but is still learning how to draw them; so he puts the variations down mainly to the evolution of his style and technique. In some cases, though, there was also a progressive change in the character (most notably early Hanners).
He also dismisses some comments about this as nit-picking that is beside the point.
-
I'm OK with how he draws his characters, since their personalities come through clearly enough. And Faye remains my favorite. The characters engaged me from the start, and so I look back at the early drawings and the criticism of them, including Jeph's, and meh. Can meh be a verb?
-
As we all know, language evolution is the most democratic thing ever.
Therefore, I vote for "meh" to be a verb.
So far, I am in the majority.
-
I vote the "meh" be added as a verb, so long as we can all agree on how to conjugate it.
I meh,
You meh,
He/She/It mehs?
-
I'd agree with the integration of 'meh' in modern plainspeak if every one of the world's dorkwads hadn't already lazily adopted into their limited vernacular.
Say it aloud right now, then post a picture of your face when you realize there's nothing you can do to make it sound natural.
-
Any noun can be verbed but the same may not be true of "meh".

I was going to work on plural conjugations, but you're right. I can't recall ever saying it before, and trying to say it, it sounded silly. The closest I've heard anyone get is "eh," and never alone- only at the end of a sentence, usually paired with "so" as in "so, eh," essentially short for "whatever." EHver- maybe that's the origin?
Also, I'll launch the new thread in 12 hours. I need to collect some information first.
-
I say meh all the time. Also muh. And buh. And beh. And whfargglll. I make a lot of strange noises, to be fair.
-
What about asdf (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=1200)?
-
And muh would be a reasonable past tense for meh. Whfargglll may possibly be the past participle of rghfrgl.
If you're going to create new words, make them as irregular as possible, I say.
-

Ow! Isn't it just? I had never heard of that poem; thank you.
-
OK, if it's accepted, let me add that it seems to be intransitive.
-
And possibly intransigent.
-
Any noun can be verbed but the same may not be true of "meh".
I don't know, verbing weirds language after all.
-
*ahem* It's "verbing enweirdens language", thank you very much. ;D
-
I wonder what the minimum age difference is for someone to be "old enough to be" one's parent.
Bit late to this party but in my experience? Between 14 and 45 years. In recorded history? Between 5 and 67 years.

*ahem* It's "verbing enweirdens language", thank you very much. ;D
I can't not read that with German pronunciation.

But that misses MoM's joke.

For women, yes, although men are physically easily able to sire children much later in life than that.
-
Generally accepted is 30-40 years.
-
Depends on where you are. Some parts of the US, it's amazing to make it to 20 without having at least one kid.
-
Am I the only one that can't get to the Swaggy GC or the Yelling Bird re-dub thing?
-
The yelling bird one was removed (jeph had it in his “random” directory, and not in his comic directory), and the other one apparently is invisible due to some database trouble (look at the Archive, there are two comics which identify as 2421).

I think Amitloaf just didn't realize there were two hands there (one atop the other). Easy mistake to make. Also, welcome to the forum, Amitloaf!
I think Amitloaf has hand and arm confused. Because Emily's left arm is translucent. It's in front of the wing.
She's secretly Susan Storm? Hmmm. Faye could be the Human Torch, Marten could be Mister Fantastic (he's kind of stretchy) and Pintsize would just have to be The Thing. In the interest of observing shipping restrictions, ignore the familial relationships.
Yes, Amitloaf meant arm :)
