I got a lot of em. Mostly all refs to recent memes with a few older ones in there, but I tend to keep up with them somewhat.. mostly because I like to be able to troll people who use them too much, incorrectly, or absurdly. Thought the guest strip was a nice one, really.

But I have no idea what any of them are, aside from what Akima mentioned, and only one of those two is associated with hipsters to me.

Though if Akima doesn't like it, I have to agree, possibly because there are references I'm not getting. Swaggy. The pants. Cat overalls. A They Live reference. None of it works. The first panels make it clear what the parody is, but I don't understand the parody itself.

I've long accepted I'm going to "get" fewer and fewer jokes and references as time goes on. Such was the case with the Emily Partridge guest strip. That's all right; it's on me to keep up, not on the world to slow down for me. I did find, however, that not "getting" all of Partridge's references didn't diminish my appreciation of the point of the strip; it might have even enhanced it -- if I understood the point correctly, that she's satirizing strips that are created to appeal to market trends with super-topical references.

If not, well, leave me to my illusion.

I'm with DSL on this one, but Akima too - it felt a bit like I'd gotten the shaft rather than a lift from the days comic, but I appreciated what was going on even without understanding it.

Consider, though, that the shaft might have *been* the point. Now I'm thinking about some of those 1990s animateds that depended heavily on super-topical references ("Goodfeathers" in particular) and are now painfully dated.

Although, given the propensity of people on the internet, YouTube in particular, to dredge up old memes and themes because retro is cool, y'know, does anything really die (even when it should)? I remember seeing "They Live" in theaters but thought I was the only one who remembered it.

#hashtags are tags on Twitter that you include in your post to kind of put it in the same category as other posts. They are prefaced by a # symbol (called a "hash"), thus the name. People use them for indicating that a post relates to a certain topic, such as a current event like a storm (#Kathrina), also for ongoing issues (#LGBTRights), for moods (#happy, #sad, #depression), for celebrities (#SeanConnery), and, more recently (and relevantly to this comic), to express what they are, if relevant to the post ("Being forced to study again #ChildOfAsianParents")* and how they feel about something ("Romney forced to end career #wellServedJustice").

Swag: I am not really sure what that means, as it started somewhat at the end of my high school time, but it means as much as "luck/fortune", but also positive events stemming from positive characteristics such as confidence or "smoothness". ("John gets all the girls. That's because of his swag."). Somewhat similar to what "coolness" used to mean some fifteen years ago.

YOLO: "You only live once". Also originated as a hashtag on Twitter, I believe. It expresses the notion that life is fleeting and should be enjoyed to its fullest by, say, finding the courage to talk to "that one girl" or going paragliding while drunk and naked. Jeph is obviously poking fun of it with the shirt he sells. I think most of it's notoriety comes from people making fun of it, but it's hard to tell on the Internet.

Actually, in this context, "swag" means "branded merchandise given away as free advertising." Swaggy wears a lot of swag.

Yes, that's pretty much what swag means, but it doesn't have to be free, just clothing/accessory merchandise of some sort. Kinda the way someone presents themselves, really. So, someone's swag could be: Flat-billed baseball cap sideways, wearing running pants halfway down the butt, having like 20 chain necklaces of different length around the neck, and rockin' the tank top, while always walking with a shoulder leaned and talkin' like a thug even though they live in Beverly Hills.

 And YOLO is effectively a short way to say "Carpe Diem" and is terribly overused in current teen culture for doing something stupid, but not regretting it. In context, you could say "Dude, totaaally broke my leg and ruined my swag trying to dive from the balcony into the pool but hit the bushes, but y'know, YOLO, brah."

Hash tags used outside of Twitter is increasingly common as well. My friends' kids like to do it quite often, even in verbally.. her child once said in response to having to do chores "hash Ihateyoumom".

The blackboard was an easy way to ref current music, where in hip hop, almost every single seems to feature (abbreviated feat.) another artist.

Tight pants for guys and flipped up baseball cap bills with words on the bottom or just flattened with a price sticker are a trendy clothing fashion these days for kids..

Yeah. she just threw as many trendy memes/styles as she could find into one comic strip to make it appeal to the teens. Such as a marketer would be apt to try for getting those teens to purchase merch and increase hits for adverts.

Okay, look, I have once or twice told people to Google things they don't understand on this forum, but even after doing so this doesn't make much sense, and wouldn't make any if we weren't whacked over the head about it for the first 5 panels. I'm 24, and for better or worse I'm around a lot of people 16 to beyond my age. This isn't a generational thing, it's a coherency thing.

Swaggie is from Justin Beiber, which means it's only relevant to teenage girls and their mothers, not muscled up mice. He doesn't even have a sideways cap or pants halfway to his ankles. YOLO was on life support before the end of 2012. Damnitstrue is a twitter account with life tips, nothing like the comic context. They Live! has undergone pop cultural osmosis, but it's by no means trendy. Anime isn't a major thing with any teens of great marketability, though some may argue with that. Four Loko is an East Coast energy drink, though it's available elsewhere, and was only trendy in 2010 when it almost got banned.

Pulled pork, cat overalls, pants and balls make no sense that I can find.

Comme des Fuckdown actually works, being a currently trendy street clothing line for whomever is classless enough to wear the word 'fuck'.

Long story short, I'm not seeing the appeal to most categories of teens OR hipsters.

Well, one of it's current day usages is to refer to stuff you get at conventions and such that's being handed out by the palletful (allegedly Something We All Get).

Probably connected to the stereotypical burglar's sack, in Australian English a "swag" is a bundle of personal property, as traditionally carried by itinerant workers, and a "swagman" or "swaggie" was a such a person. They are part of our national mythology:

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong

And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled:

I mentioned that the current usage of swag is effectively the way you present yourself. I added to that a style of presentation beyond just the clothing or accessories you present yourself with. How you walk and talk and act can be your "swag". You could be wearing nothing and still say "Why'm I wearin' nothin'? S'cuz my swag." Older usages exist in excessive forms. Urban Dictionary has most of them. Google has the rest.

Heh. So we even analyze the guest comics this much. Must've been once hell of a guest strip =P
