Title: Sweeping Generalizations About You Based on Your Music Taste
Post by: BrittanyMarie on 01 Feb 2009, 00:26
So in the spirit of this thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,12973.0.html), let's make fun of each other by stereotyping them based on what music they listen to.

First! Go to your last.fm or whatever you use and post your top (at least) five songs. You can certainly add more. We will stereotype you based on your taste.

Rule! Don't post if you'll get offended that someone is teasing you, and don't cheat!

Here's an example!

1    Acid Bath – Venus Blue    152
2    Current 93 – A Song for Douglas After He's Dead 136
3    Ancient Rites – (Ode to Ancient) Europa 135
4    3 Inches of Blood – Deadly Sinners 132
5    Immortal – Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms 128
6    Sol Invictus – Kneel to the Cross 125
7    ewigkeit – Strange Volk [Edit]    122
8    King Diamond – The Trees Have Eyes 118
8    My Dying Bride – Sear Me MCMXC III 118
10    Waylander – Sunrise 115

I don't know any of those bands, but going by the names you're a skinny kid in a black t-shirt with incomprehensible lettering who gets moist over 16 minute guitar solos and songs about your D&D character, who is a dwarf who drinks alot.

Here are mine, to start us off
1 Okkervil River – The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion 85
2 Totally Micheal – ShakeYour Booty or Die 55
3 Beulah – If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart 45
4 Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland, 1945 42
5 Animal Collective – Who Could Win a Rabbit full track 39
6 Danielson Famile – Good News For The Pus Pickers 38
7 Bikini Kill – I Like Fucking 31
8 The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect 29
8 Beat Happening – teenage caveman full track 29
8 The Earlies – Morning Wonder 29
8 Danielson Famile – Rallying The Dominoes 29
8 The Mountain Goats – Palmcorder Yajna 29

(If you aren't able to stereotype me, don't worry; post your own so that way there are more to generalize!)

The Mountain Goats – Color in Your Cheeks
The National – The Geese of Beverly Road

1. You are actually me. But a dude named Tom. OR
2. You are the music enthusiast who disdains all other music enthusiasts if they know less about classic-- seminal, if you will--albums than you do. You don't mind people who listen to top 40 or whatever, it's just those goddamn hipsters ruining everything for you.

This is what my top tracks were for the months of September to December. I already posted it somewhere. I like this selection best because it is so sad

1. The Magnetic Fields – All My Little Words
2. Okkervil River – Song of Our So-Called Friend
3. The Radio Dept. – I Wanted You to Feel the Same
4. The Radio Dept. – The City Limit
5. The Magnetic Fields – I Don't Want to Get Over You
6. TV on the Radio – Love Dog
7. The Wedding Present – Dare
8. Why? – Fatalist Palmistry
9. The Radio Dept. – South Side
10. Okkervil River – It Ends With A Fall

My real one looks like this (http://www.last.fm/user/balikye/charts?rangetype=overall&subtype=tracks) though

grr is chiiiilllllllll. I'd stereotype you as you probably like to knit a lot and just hang out and watch a movie at home as opposed to going out and getting drunk. If you do go to shows, you prefer assigned seating to general admission. (I already knew you like to knit though)

I didn't do songs because that list is mostly of songs from 2ManyDJs sets and TISM songs, so here's the top 10 artists, it seemed kind of easier to do Spluff this way as well

2 LCD Soundsystem
3 Daft Punk
4 Digitalism
5 Soulwax
6 Richie Hawtin

You were the long haired dude in your drama class in high school but you never fitted in there because you wouldn't wear makeup and you're not into glam metal.

Just going on random of my library, and ignoring anything I don't listen to, since I don't use lastfm. I'll just do the artist, rather than the song, because I've found that a good amount of the songs I'm getting are not stand-outs.

Witchcraft
Dead Kennedys
Megadeth
Down
Judas Priest
Isis
Clutch
Bruce Springsteen
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Overkill
Iron Maiden

Wow, after a while, I just kept going without writing it down, and I did not get any Agalloch. Odd.

1. Lonely Organist Rape Page Turner - Dresden Doll
2. Astronaut - Amanda Palmer
3. Mason Twins - David Pajo
4. Gentleman Caller - Cursive
5. Hurt -   Nine Inch Nails

Woooo! Make a generalization about me now!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Overkill
Iron Maiden

You like beer. Your wardrobe is pretty limited, and one item within it may or may not be a denim jacket. Missing a shower every once in a while probably is not a huge deal to you.

I have to admit that's all basically from the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Isis is rad.

I listen to things on my Zune, which doesn't keep track of listens, I don't think. And I rarely listen to musics on the computer so Last.fm and the like don't really appeal to me. I was going to get into it, but it was during that time when Last.fm had a client program and it was really just too much hassle.

So here's stuff I've been listening to lately, I suppose, just from memory.

1. Benga - Night
2. Radiohead - Sail to the Moon
3. Alexander Brandon - UNATCO
4. Battles - Race: In
5. Quiet Village - Too High to Move
6. Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows
7. Buraka Som Sistema - Black Diamond
8. The Bug ft. Tippa Irie - Angry
9. Aphex Twin - Jynweythek Ylow
10. Assorted half-songs and ideas that I've come up with in Reason

You wear a lot of flannel, love going to shows while possibly high, probably have at least a neckbeard..... and you have a gold grill and spinners on your car. (You are hard to stereotype because I can't separate "Sam" from this list of music so I kind of just ended up describing you. "You have a lot of flannel and also probably rock a beard" OH WAIT that is true)

Assume all you want.

You care too much about silly rock music. Your chucks are worn but clean, jeans are tight but not skinny, t-shirts obscure, and you have no upper body strength. Your hair is in your eyes. Sometimes you talk a lot about musicians that your friends haven't heard of.

oh my god, this is essentially me.

except for the part where I haven't worn chucks in ages.

* Ben Harper - One Road To Freedom
* Rage Against The Machine - Bombtrack
* Radio Soulwax - the entire album
* Sublime - Santeria
* Murder By Death - Brother
* Dropkick Murphys - Kiss Me, I'm Shitfaced

* The Flaming Lips - Vaseline

You make it a point to look different from the people around you.
Most of your musical taste is out of strong opposition for the mediocre shit the idiots around you are numbing themselves with.
You were born on a cloud that was struck by a rainbow.
You're so much better than anybody else, the only way the world would be better is if anybody knew about it.
You're a fucking elitist and you love listening to music that few other people like or even know.
Your pants are tight, you probably have a tattoo and you don't only wear glasses because you need them but because you think they make you look distinguished.

The Mountain Goats – Counting Song
The Mountain Goats – There Will Be No Divorce full track
The National – Lit Up
The Mountain Goats – Standard Bitter Love Song #8 full track
The National – Start a War
The National – Karen
The National – Apartment Story
The Mountain Goats – Sail On full track
The Mountain Goats – Going to Santiago full track
The Mountain Goats – Color in Your Cheeks
The National – The Geese of Beverly Road
The National – American Mary full track
The National – Fake Empire
The National – Baby, We'll Be Fine
Heathers – margie

This tells you more about the songs I listen to when I go to sleep than anything about me as a person, though.

My guess is that you are four legged, have long straight fur, horns, bleat a lot, eat grass, traverse mountains, and are a goat.

You get stoned almost constantly and talk about music that nobody you know likes. When you play your music, people either clutch their ears and complain or fall asleep.

This is actually the exact opposite of what happens.

Lucky. Everyone I know would either get bored by those bands or find them too abrasive.

edit: Oh hey, haven't responded to my stereotype.

Don't drink, wardrobe is decently varied, no (I could borrow my dad's denim jacket though), and no. Not a bad guess, just not me.

I generally just put my iTunes on shuffle when I listen to music so here is the first ten songs that come up. I tried to find out what the 10 most played were but I couldn't find out how.

1. Yo La Tengo - Season of the Shark
2. Opeth - Funeral Portrait
3. Extra Limb - Spittin' Blood
4. Nine Inch Nails - Sin
5. infected Mushroom - In Front of Me
6. Khold - Slaktereika (Butcher's Oath)
7. Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It)
8. Ignite - Veteran
9. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
10. Skulker - Situation - Desperation

This is actually a fairly accurate representation of what I listen to most of the time actually. iTunes is relatively unimaginative when it comes to shuffling songs.

These are my top twenty artists for the past year. I think this is most accurate (twenty gives more stuff than ten, okay). Double numbers mean a tie!

1 Do Make Say Think
2 A Silver Mt Zion
3 Mogwai
4 Envy
5 Escape the Day
6 LITE
7 Laura
8 Tarentel
9 Dirty Three
9 Low
11 Saetia
12 Jakob
12 Mono
14 The Tiny
15 The One AM Radio
16 Vic Chesnutt
17 Caspian
18 Efterklang
19 Silkworm
20 The Pax Cecilia

I would comment on you kids but I am finding it kind of difficult to stereotype all of you based on music taste.

If you could surgically implant headphones you probably would.  You spend virtually every minute that you are out of a building in open air listening to music and probably looking at the sky.  It is possible that you make orchestration motions with your hands when you are alone in your room.

I think the issue that's occurring within this thread is people are starting to complain about assholish comments.

I think the same people missed the OP, because that's the entire point of this thread. It is based on not being nice or intelligent about things, but instead mean-spirited and uninformed.

See, you didnt make a witty generalization based on taste though.

No-one has really made a witty generalisation based on taste, though. In fact, "witty generalisation" is a term that contradicts itself in this context. This entire thread is just riding on boring stereotypes (as per the thread title) and hence there's not really much to work with.

I maintain that getting annoyed at other people in this thread is counterproductive to its purpose. I don't think anyone is expressing their real views in this thread. In fact, I believe OP kindly requested that we leave our egos at the door.

i thought it was based on lightly teasing people by lumping them into overly generalizing categories? being outright mean is just uncreative.

edit: tyler beat me to it.

There is no creativity in this thread, because we are just attaching the negative aspects of existing stereotypes to one another. It's essentially a glorified list thread.
Title: Re: Sweeping Generalizations About You Based on Your Music Taste

However boring you think this thread may be, you must realize there is a difference between uh, saying "you are 18 forever" and silly things like that and then saying "why do you listen to music".

Do you not see the difference? The latter comment is flat out rude and distasteful. If you notice I don't think anyone else in this thread is being terribly rude. But lets not dwell on this anymore, okay? Its silly and depressing.

Allow me to point out my earlier posts. I took part in the thread in a light-hearted manner (and still was with my "why do you listen to music" comment).

Also allow me to point out that if Objects Inside Clouds is asking us not to dwell on it, bringing up that question is not conductive to his cause? I thought the concept of this thread was good, but in practice, no-one is really offering anything beyond the completely obvious.

Anna- you are a teenage girl living a suburban town which, by a 50-something year old could be described as "quaint". As a restless teenager, you find the contents of said town despicable and your number one dream is to abandon it for better, more exciting things as soon as your development will allow you. Part of your music allows you to relate to famous musicians who write about growing up in their own quaint, shithole suburban towns and then running from them. You wish to be like these people more than anything in the world. The rest of your music allows you to live vicariously through it's creators, fantasizing about big cities and amazing travels and colorful experiences. You look forward to the times when this will be your present.

You are intelligent and this makes it difficult for you to deny that you are incredibly naive. You try as you must to overlook the somewhat melancholy reality that you will never be who and where you want to be, simply because your fantasies are just that, and your idols are regular people such as yourself whose music is, for the most part, fictitious.

Occasionally you ignore all this momentarily and rock the fuck out with a small companion on your shoulder which you keep there for gratification. The parakeet appreciates the rokk like no one else does.

The Mountain Goats – Counting Song
The Mountain Goats – There Will Be No Divorce full track
The National – Lit Up
The Mountain Goats – Standard Bitter Love Song #8 full track
The National – Start a War
The National – Karen
The National – Apartment Story

The Mountain Goats – Color in Your Cheeks
The National – The Geese of Beverly Road

1. Yo La Tengo - Season of the Shark
2. Opeth - Funeral Portrait
3. Extra Limb - Spittin' Blood
4. Nine Inch Nails - Sin
5. infected Mushroom - In Front of Me
6. Khold - Slaktereika (Butcher's Oath)
7. Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It)
8. Ignite - Veteran
9. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
10. Skulker - Situation - Desperation

When you watch The Matrix, you always get distracted by all the pretty clothes. You always over-accessorize, intent on covering up as much of your pale skin with little bits of chain and leather as you can. You are not actually sad all the time, you just like looking like you are.

And if someone wants to do me,

You sometimes lurk the QC music forums, but very rarely. You're starting to become interested in what everyone else is listening to, but really it's just music so you are like "whatev". In time though, you will become more bitter and more angry and slowly, though you won't realize it at the time, become One Of Us.

You don't care enough to re-tag all of the "Green Typewriters" on Dusk At Cubist Castle with Roman numerals just to prevent it from being your number one song. It is your number one song because you are a firm believer in the superiority of listening to full albums over just listening to songs.

John K. Samson's lyrics make you cry because they are so honest and meaningful.

Postulate my possible personality!

You are generally a pretty happy person.  You are content, and while you enjoy trying new things, you do not go out of your way to do so.  You have a close group of friends, and you go to the same restaurant every Saturday.  The wait staff knows your name and what you usually order, and you tip well, but not extravagantly.  Your wardrobe contains many band t-shirts and several argyle cardigans.  You play acoustic guitar, and your ideal job is owning your own record store.

(I am pretty sure I'm just projecting features of people I know who like the same music onto you.)

In person, you're relatively quiet when the subject of music comes up, because nobody really knows what you're talking about whenever you get excited about something.  However, constant reinforcement from a variety of sources that you have specifically sought out for the sake of sharing thoughts about music (aka the internet) has you convinced that when you get excited about music, you have a better reason to than anyone else.  You're usually right, but this approach hasn't really quite yet coalesced into any kind of defined taste per se, and in between this, your enthusiasm for the music you listen to, and the fact that most of the talking you do about music is on the internet, you haven't found anyone yet who you can hang out with and just listen to music to with.  Since music is such a large part of your life, you sometimes despair of ever finding a close music buddy, and perhaps an abnormally large proportion of what you look for in a partner has to do with their musical tastes.

You probably grew up in a house with a bunch of people who liked music that was cool enough for you to keep around.  Music that successfully replicates the feeling you got from the cool music you listened to growing up is now your favorite.  You're a little bit stuck in the past this way, but the idea that non-retro new music can also be cool has just recently started to grow on you and you've gotten a taste for stuff that you're pretty sure is underappreciated.  Most of the music you like is stuff that makes you think that not only are the musicians you listen to talented, but they also have very good taste in music themselves.

The chances of finding someone in your life who actually listens to all the same stuff you do are virtually insignificant, but the chances that you make new friends based on the fact that you listen to one or two certain specific bands are much higher than they are for anyone else you know ... and it seems to be a different band every time you make a new friend.

You're probably more likely to be interested in DJing than making music with instruments, but if you get into one you'll inevitably get into the other.

Nobody would ever be able to tell what you listen to from the way you dress.

You get annoyed when people around you smoke too much pot (and it happens often).  You've tried it yourself, and it was kinda cool, or at least weird enough to be interesting at first, but it made you way too paranoid so you decided not to anymore.

You almost never hang out with girls and when you do, if you don't know them, you feel awkward.  However, when you make friends with girls (and you have a couple times), you become very very close to them and if romantic attraction develops, it does so only after a long time (and they probably get attracted to you first even though you don't know it at the time).  Hanging out with a bunch of girls at a time basically never happens for you, but it's never occurred to you that that might be weird, so you're OK with it.

You have secret desires to mosh at shows really hard but you're too physically fragile for it to be safe.  It's OK though, because a lot of the shows you go to don't have mosh pits anyway, instead people just stand around (half of them with their eyes closed, bobbing their heads) and maybe a few people up front are moving around.  You're OK with that too.

Does Correct Musical Taste™ involve giving up Meat Loaf?
This is very important.

Since music is such a large part of your life, you sometimes despair of ever finding a close music buddy, and perhaps an abnormally large proportion of what you look for in a partner has to do with their musical tastes.

this describes me perfectly even though it was written for alex c.
except i don't really date people based on musical preference because if i did, i'd end up with someone like tommy. but i would secretly like to have a boyfriend who appreciates the fall at least.

Onewheelwizzard, you are really good at this! Except for the second part of the pot thing (I'm actually too paranoid even to try it...), you have it spot on. How are you doing this? I find it slightly unnerving.
Title: Re: Sweeping Generalizations About You Based on Your Music Taste

My secret is that I only do it with people whose musical taste reminds me of either myself or someone I know.  Then I zero in on precisely what it is about that person I know (or myself) that makes me like those bands, and extrapolate on that.

For instance, you listen to ISIS, Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Lacuna Coil, so you like really intense/distorted rock (hence secret desire to mosh), but you also listen to Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Porcupine Tree (which screams "nerd," and therefore, "probably physically fragile" and "not friends with lots of girls but good friends with a few").  The part about the paranoia/annoyance regarding weed comes from the fact that you DON'T listen to music with a heavy bottom end or a heavy psychedelic influence, which you inevitably would by now if you liked getting high.

I draw all these conclusions from comparing you to myself, a friend I had in the first couple years of college, and guys who wear shirts with prog-rock bands on them (you are not one of them, they are usually bigger than you and have long hair and possibly neckbeards).  At least one or two of your friends in high school probably have/had bad acne and probably wear/wore button-down shirts with airbrushed artwork of dragons (or maybe even anime characters) on them.  Those are the ones now wearing prog-rock t-shirts, and you went a different direction and you probably wear dark solid colors almost exclusively.

Well screw me running.

The only thing you left out is specifically which family members. Oh, hey, I'm not unique.

Dont worry I'll do gene too. i feel like i know too much so i tried to forget the various things i knew.

your friends dragged you to the basement punk show and you were like okay this is kind of fun but five minutes later you were like fuck this shit i wanna jump around and sing and not get punched in the face. So you went to the store and picked up a jazzmaster or a strat and were like okay im gonna start an awesome band and you would up playing some kind of cool rock music. then you were like oh hey ill just play shows in my living room and you did and and all the hipster kids came and it was pretty fun cause they all did their little dance in place thing as you jumped around and sang and your bassist totally did a power kick during the show.

after that you wandered around the city at 3 in the morning looking for a 711 because you wanted tasty snacks.

You are a fantastic student in math, computer science, and possibly even physics.  When you get into relationships, they last for a very long time and tend to be quite serious ... but at the same time, your breakups are not as over-the-top and dramatic as the breakups of many of your more commitment-phobic friends.  You might be a really highly classically trained musician (perhaps a violinist?) but even if you're not, you almost certainly know the names of a few that nobody else would know.

You tend not to be especially emotive and many of your friends look up to you for your cool head and balanced worldview (they also think you are smarter than they are and most of them are probably right).  However, you shy away from giving people advice because you secretly identify as a relative social outcast despite your reliable, if reserved, competence and eloquence in social situations.

Lots of people keep saying "do me do me". If no one has stereotyped you yet, it probably means they either know too much about you, or not enough about the music, or it's sufficiently varied enough that it is too hard to stereotype. Also Control-F-ing your name on each page if you don't care enough to read the other posts will help you see if someone has stereotyped you.

I think this thread is harder than the one in 2006 because in that one I was one-word summarizing people left and right because I didn't know them at all.

You probably like to think of yourself as living on a spectrum, one side of which is filled with dreamy romanticism, late-night cuddles with a boy who can appreciate a romantic comedy (possibly starring Sandra Bullock, and definitely anything with Minnie Driver), and having love songs written for you.  However, the other side of the spectrum (which is the side you probably like to act as if you're on all the time) is filled with whiskey (straight, no ice, maybe even swigged from the bottle), jaded single men who don't say much, sit in smoky bars on weeknights, and just happen to be cooler than anyone in a 10-block radius (and are drastically underappreciated for it), and parties where drunken makeouts aren't awkward the next day because everyone's actually just in it for the reckless fun of it all.  Your I-know-how-to-have-fun persona is frustrating for the hopeless romantic side of you, because it's the side that all the boys seem to like (and the hopeless romantic side of you is the side that cares more about being liked), but you're starting to realize that the hopeless romantic side of you might be content to wait until the right guy comes along.  (Watch out for yourself if that romantic girl inside you ever feels as if her time has come ... she'll be setting herself up for a fall.)

and just happen to be cooler than anyone in a 10-block radius (and are drastically underappreciated for it),

and parties where drunken makeouts aren't awkward the next day because everyone's actually just in it for the reckless fun of it all.
I kissed 53 boys in one night once!

It's even more accurate because of the last part because at this very moment I am heartbroken! Awesome! o/ OWW

You're mostly right on the personality aspects, I'm working on the musicianship (drumming lessons 4+ years, and now guitar, hopefully a music degree afterwards). But, I would say I never had the drive to be any good at math, however I do enjoy a little programming here and there, and I liked physics when I took it.

Hey, I thought these were supposed to be demeaning in some way. I like this.

It WAS supposed to be; OWW is just creepily intuitive that he's actually dead on for most people, which is kind of awesome.

And I guess I never meant it to be demeaning at all, teasing maybe, but not actually mean. No one really has so much, I think one person tried to be funny and said something like why do you even listen to music, but there have also been people saying just you have good taste which is equally as boring I guess so whatever!

You are young, but you are very thoughtful. Others often remark that you are "wise for your age" or an "old soul". In general you keep a level head and you have an air of sophistication about you. You are a very good and attentive friend to people around you who are confused or agitated. But you don't mind cutting loose every once in awhile. You are a rather upbeat and optimistic person for the most part, but occasionally slip off into daydreaming or get lost in idle thought, which can make you seem like a space-case.  You generally see yourself as having a more sophisticated musical taste than those of your peers.  You also enjoy just straight-up rocking out sometimes because, what the hell?  You like to live it up.

You sometimes lurk the QC music forums, but very rarely. You're starting to become interested in what everyone else is listening to, but really it's just music so you are like "whatev". In time though, you will become more bitter and more angry and slowly, though you won't realize it at the time, become One Of Us.

Man, how did I miss this. You are right in the first sentence. Mostly I go through and go "what the heck is this?" I get music from forumites, though, just rarely through the actual forum.

GET OUT OF HERE, STALKER!

The reason I say this is because it strikes me as the kind of music that someone who likes Tarkovsky films would like.  Stalker was my favorite, and there was a game that had a hilarious bug involving that quote based on the movie.

But seriously, a lot of those bands make music that leaves me thinking about just sitting somewhere devoid of people and observing nature carry on around me.  Tarkovsky films do this to me also.

Therefore, you are a fan of Tarkovsky films, as well as many other directors who use long takes and lots of nature-centric imagery.  You might even be a film student (I recall reading you saying this somewhere, so that's kind of cheating), but as is evident from the dreamlike quality of the music you listen to, your head is in the clouds a lot and you strive to find or create imagery that mimics the effect that music has on you.

I am not very good at this.

Post by: Cernunnos on 03 Feb 2009, 20:08
Close, yet so far. I am not a film student, however I am an art student. Also, I have never seen any Tarkovsky films. But you'd be right to say that I would probably like them a lot. I do have a tendency to build my Art directly out of the aesthetic motifs processes and materials (often natural) that surround me without overlaying my own "style", if i have one. So, yes.

OK, so I'm black, but I'm self conscious about it, because I like Broken Social Scene. What do I listen to?

no, i think Pants had it right. i'll find a song i like on the radio and then look it up on youtube for a video and then for all possible techno remixes. if i really like it i'll download the artist with torrents to find out more about them.

Do me, if you please.

Of late, mostly album wise:
Rachmaninov, Piano concerto number three., as performed by Vladmir Ashkenazy.
The Velvet Underground, the Velvet Underground & Nico.
Daft Punk, various songs.
Jefferson Airplane, surrealistic pillow era music.
My Bloody Valentine, Loveless.
Arvo Part (forgive the mis-spelling), Orient and Occident.
Mozart, Requiem, by the Vienna philharmonic.
The lucky star theme song, Take It! Sailor uniform, (the truth will set you free.)
R. Strauss, Alpine Symphony, as performed by the Berlin Philharmonic.
Radiohead, Kid A.
Godspeed you! Black emperor, Slow Riot for Zero Kaneda.
Some of Tchaikovsky's piano works.
All of Hendrix's studio work.
Prokiev's Prokofiev Sonata in C major.
Finally a lot of Joy Division, probably too much.

That is what is on my common rotation at the moment.

You intentionally try to have contradictory music taste, while failing to fall on the extreme of either side. This is done to try and be seen as "open-minded", because you fear other people's judgments subconsciously.

So I'm back in my hometown for the time being, and I went to the local library.

Here are some albums I borrowed:

Talking Heads: Sand in the Vaseline
90 Day Men: Panda Park
Steely Dan: Katy Lied
Ozma: Rock and Roll Part Three
Superchunk: Here's to Shutting Up
Simon and Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park
Pretty Girls Make Graves: The New Romance

Stereotype me, cap'n!

Here's my top 12 from the last 12 months:

1. Regina Spektor – Samson
2. Bif Naked – Lucky
3. Rilo Kiley – Does He Love You?
3. Rilo Kiley – The Absence of God
5. Rasputina – Sign of the Zodiac
5. Sarah McLachlan – Do What You Have to Do
7. Ellen Wondra – The Prom Song (this is actually a song by a non-famous but still amazing friend of mine)
8. Rasputina – AntiqueHighHeelRedDollShoes
8. The Sundays – Wild Horses
8. Regina Spektor – Poor Little Rich Boy
8. Rilo Kiley – Portions for Foxes
8. Bif Naked – Moment of Weakness

You want more than anything to play in an all girl band.  You wish you had been old enough to go to a Lilith Fair when they were still running.  You might enjoy kissing girls, or think you would if you have not tried it yet.  You sometimes fantasize about getting a crew cut just to freak people out, but always decide against it.

you listen to music in order to put yourself into a good mood. when you are not listening to music, you'll still have a song or a few songs in your head for a large part of the day and may even start singing along without realizing it. you probably spend a lot of time daydreaming and staring off into space but usually it's about good stuff because you're a pretty optimistic person. you always smile at strangers when you make eye contact with them. you probably like romantic comedies, but only clever ones.

John! That is AWESOME. So few marks on the picture, and soooo creeepppyyyyy.

Tommy! I was a little disappointed you didn't comment on what I thought was a perfect "burn" stereotype of you. I almost wrote "oh snap" after it or maybe "oooooohh buuuuurrrn". Also (unrelatedly) since you posted that instead of taking it to PM, I will assume you were kidding too.

Last! I thought it would be fun to stereotype myself based on my last three months of last.fm listening, which is:

1   Okkervil River 78
2    Wolf Parade 27
3    Hόsker Dό 23
4    Jeffrey Lewis 20
5    Page France 19
6    David Bowie 18
7    Liars 12
8    Pernice Brothers   11
9    Kimya Dawson 9
10    Cass County Uglies 8 (local country punk band, Lucero style)
11    Townes Van Zandt 7
11    Kris Kristofferson   7
11    Johnny Cash 7
14    Jimmie Rodgers 6
14    Merle Haggard

CLEARLY I am a bumpkin who likes drinking cheap beer and whiskey in small town bars with nearly empty jukeboxes and also I can drive a stick shift but whatever, it's not even a thing. I don't care for the finer things in life. That is from the bottom half of the list. The top half of the list indicates that I am a person who gets fixated easily on one thing and can never ever stop being fixated on that thing and maybe I should diversify my music more because that is a lot of Okkervil River.

What is a Will Sheff? Do they sell them in Ikea?

Will Sheff is primary songwriter in Okkervil River; I distinctly remember Johnny C trying his hardest to make you listen to them.

But here, there's obviously more but this is essentially the thesis of the song
Quote
You've got taste, you've got taste,
what a waste that that's all that you have.

I am calling you pretentious or something

I share your dismay, please, if you may.
Of late:
Finally, a lot of Joy Division, probably too much.

Taste is worthless if nobody cares about it because you are being a humourless arse about it. You could be a funny arse and get away with it but...

well moving swiftly on, I didn't know anyone listened to Green day, then again i started listening to music properly at age 17 so I may have a slight disadvantage that I was out of the premier age group for them.

Nope, but I get the reference

To Stereotype on my own list, I'd say:
White guy in his late 30's or early 40's, owns a Camaro, stil has OP shirts in the closet plus bunch of faded rock band T Shirts from the stadium tours in the 70-80's, and had a mullet but shaved it off when grunge got big.

Not that that would be accurate, other than the age.

I do like some of the rest, even if you have forced me to google/wiki some of the bands.  Never to old to find new music to listen to!

Gogol Bordello
Jonathan Coulton
Snow Patrol
The killers
Oroff (Carmina Burana)
Voltaire
Bill Bailey
Eels

I am trying to get more classical music scores into the repitoire, would anyone be able to advise me as to where to get them?

(It's "Orff".)

Look back at my posts in the mediaf!re thread for quite a variety of classical stuff of various periods (or go to www.mediafire.com/pwhodges).

Mediaf!re is simply a file server; the issue is what people choose to put there and download from there.  A complication is that the legality of a download probably depends most strongly on the jurisdiction that the downloader lives in; so making things available is not necessarily illegal, but it may be for some/most people to download them.

Also, you will note that many of the recordings I have put up there are my own (some private, some commercial recordings that I made), and that a few are over 50 years old and so out of copyright (recordings have a different time period from other things at present in most jurisdictions) .

Classical can be one fo the trickiest areas for MP3's and other music files.  Almost everyone udnerstands the laws about intellectual property for modern era music.  At the most basic, free music from anywhere other than the band itself is illegal.  Classical gets complicated, because some of is clealy in the public domain, some rights belong to the orchestra that recorded and released the music and some rights could belong to owners of the estate or music catalog of more recent composers.  I make no claim to understand the complex fine points of the law.  I have always figured on the "maximum crap" rule, which simply states that you should assume the most restrictive law and worst legal penalty you can think of will apply. (Harsh and negative, yes, but it keeps me out of trouble.)

As for your interest in classical music, GREAT!  Besides the old standards, such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, I'm a Wagner fan.  He gets a bad rap because of the association with Nazi regime, but for really powerful stuff, Wagner was one of the best.  Had he lived today, he would be a Hollywood theme song composer, no doubt.

After that, don't overlook what some modern composers have done, outside the mainstream.  Many modern "classical" composers are very experimental  with in the framework of a symphony orchestra.  Part of my interest here is personal; I have a cousin who writes orchestral pieces.  He did a very moving commemorative work for my younger brother after he passed away.

Not true dude. Metal: A Headbanger's Journey makes it quite clear that Wagner would be well into heavy metal. Somehting about the large amount of bass employed in his compositions.

1) Imogen Heap
2) Chemical Bros.
3) Ella Fitzgerald
4) Thievery Corporation
5) Tori Amos
6) Bobby McFerrin (EXCEPT for "Don't Worry, Be Happy"...argh!   He's never done anything else like THAT.  He learned.)
7) Annie Lennox
8) Anna Nalick
9) Steely Dan/Donald Fagan
10) Alison Krause/Union Station

Yeah, that's relatively representative.

I am trying to get more classical music scores into the repitoire, would anyone be able to advise me as to where to get them?

It's really a crapshoot. I suggest just going to a store and picking up CDs, because it's hard to find torrents of anything like that - it's not popular enough among people who use torrent programs.

Anyway, you could check out French romantic composers, such as Debussy, Godard, Ravel, and Saint-Saens. I find their compositions to be a little less uptight than what most people imagine when they think of "classical" music, and it's more freeform and expressive. Godard is the most standard-sounding of the four, I think.

For particular pieces, I love Godard's Suite de Trois Morceaux, Op. 116 (learning to play it at the moment), Debussy's Syrinx and his Prelude A L'Apres-Midi dun Faune, Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, etc etc.

In all honesty going to a store and picking them up is ultimately more economical.  The one near my house has a bunch of stuff in cardboard sleeves for 2$ each, mostly the big names, but a few others here and there.  Your other option is to leave the computer on overnight downloading a concert by one composer (because the vast majority of classical rips are in FLAC [upwards of 250 MB at the least], and anything that is not Beethoven, Bach or Mozart is not going to have many seeds), and raise your power bill slightly more than it would probably cost to pick up a few of those cheaper-packaged CD's.

Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 19 Feb 2009, 12:57
Yeah, used record/CD stores are the way to go for classical for sure. The one near my house has big classical vinyl boxsets (like Beethoven's complete piano sonatas and so on). You can load up on a lot of the big names for very little money and support your local record store in the process! Woah, a win-win!

You are a 14 year old kid, you have a hoodie with a skull, huge baggie jeans and you skateboard and are in a band with your friends which is just about to play at the school dance/local under 18's gig.
Which person didja mean?  Unless you quote, it's next-to-impossible to know who you're referring to.

You don't need to sig quote the post directly above you, in fact, it's generally discouraged.  If someone's reply is directly after yours, you can assume they are replying to you.

Okkervil River
Silkworm
The Decemberists
The Weakerthans
Pavement
Belle & Sebastian
Bob Dylan
Neil Young
Jawbreaker
Bedhead

...Ready on the right...

Nobody loves you and you will die old in a nursing home. You drive slower than you should and cry yourself to sleep most nights. You smoke a bit too much weed than you should, and this is detrimental to your relationships. You have been called weird in a good way by some.

You were raised by a dad who grew up in middle-class white America, that never quite fit in. Having picked up his love for the music he played for you when you were young (Zappa, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd... Django Reinhardt, possibly?), you were also in a similar position as him, and over time you went your own way, both in terms of both music and mindset.

Not too bad, but I was raised by a single mom.  Hahaha.

Here is a list of the songs my MP3 player informs me are my Most Popular. Bear in mind that my MP3 player frequently plays entire albums, in order, whilst allegedly on the Random Track setting.

Jolene - Dolly Parton
If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher
Little Green - Joni Mitchell
Blue - Joni Mitchell
The Animals Were Gone - Damien Rice
Believe - Cher
Rootless Tree - Damien Rice
Awkward Annie - Kate Rusby
Just Like Jesse James - Cher
Who Knows Where the Time Goes - Sandy Denny

I wouldn't say those were my favourite songs though.

You are going to marry Emilio in a huge, lavish wedding ceremony after which he will swear never to listen to obscure music ever again and will in fact listen to anything you tell him to. He will also take up acoustic guitar and write songs about how much he loves you and how much you mean to him so that you will never forget.

You have no interest in music at all and only listen to what is either played on the radio or deemed cool by pitchfork/nme. You are also the kind of person who goes to gigs and talks all the way through not bothering to pay attention to the bands because you don't care about them and a gig is just a social gathering anyway.

You do not understand what it means to sing in tune and would rather that a vocalist screeched out their words. Also, you do not like music with guitars that cannot be played at insane speeds believing those who create riffs and melodies to be far inferior. Furthermore, you have painted your room black in a show of rebellion and go about claiming that cutting yourself is cool although you are too scared to do it.

Nina Simone

Micheal Franti
John Lee Hooker
 The Beatles
 Modest Mouse
Musicals(hairspray, miss saigon, evita!, RENT, grease, My Fair Lady, Spring's awakenining, etc)
 Radiohead
Beach Boys
Gym class Heroes
 Sublime
Benny Benassi
 Of Montreal
 Queen
 Mika
 Cat Power
 Billie Holiday
 Beck

I um, yeah.

You think that you are too cool for the mainstream and so go looking for something that will make you stand out instead. You only pretend to like The Beatles and The Beach Boys to make it seem like you have some musical knowledge and instead listen to mainly tuneless musicals. In the modern era you listen to music that is deemed unsanitary by others [Cat Power, Gym Class Heroes, benny Benassi] and are big on queer power.

You don't understand why people use vocals in music as you think they are a waste of time. If you had your way, everybody would communicate through musical scales. You think that you have a varied musical taste but actually only listen to music in which the artists don't have the talent to come up with good song endings and so let them go on forever. You enjoy walking around in elizabethan costume and wear a powdered wig at all times while declaring 'bah' on any arguments which fail to resemble your own.

You make a point of listening to pretentious music to try and make your wankery seem ironic. You possess a large mullet which you fashion into a powdered wig on occasion and the rest of the time swing around as you headbang pathetically. Additionally, you possess little to no musical intellect as you listen only to famous bands and their derivatives and are constantly snotty and uptight around all people, family included.

Well, seeing as you asked.

You see little need to bring instruments into music, instead relying on computers for the majority of your preference. When you do listen to bands it has to be someone who is seen as progressive and a leader as this is how you feel about yourself being excessively vain. You occasionally throw in some more unsanitary music to try to deflate your ego a little but always fail as you once again rise to airhead #1.

Hey it has come to my understanding that several people have gotten offended at your generalizations regarding their taste. I believe that a bunch of folks asked/implied that you should lay off this thread for a while or, at the very least, tone it down. After all, the point of the thread is to make people laugh and not legitimately hurt their feelings, right?

But having read some of your replies I see what the problem is here. You're just not that funny, but you post with the air of someone who thinks they are fucking hilarious. Maybe you should re-evaluate how likely you are to make people laugh, realize that posting ten of these in a row is perhaps a little more than is necessary, and focus on quality over quantity. I guarantee you it'll be valuable in the long run.

From my last week's listening:

Beat Furrer
Rebecca Saunders
Harrison Birtwistle
Earle Brown
Earnest Cox
Konrad Boehmer
Salvatore Sciarrino
George Antheil
Richard Wagner
Maurice Durufle

Before you can judge me, you must answer the following questions:

Which of those wrote a piece for accordion, piano, choir (wordless) and orchestra?
Which of those used to be followed by the secret service when visiting the UK?
Which of those is an indie rock group?

Paul, I can't even generalize that. If anyone else posted that, I would have to say "you're likely cloned from Paul Hodges".

Also, I'm guessing Beat Furrer is the band.

I'm going to guess Boehmer was followed around by the Secret Service. He was an East German Marxist, right?

PS. I cheated and Googled it. Rebbecca Saunders wrote a piece for Accordion, Piano, Choir, and Orchestra.

Oh and Beat Furrer isn't several people. He's just Swiss (I think).

PPS. After some more cheating, I've hit on what should have been painfully obvious. Earnest Cox is the name of an Indie Rock band.

This was fun. I still can't make any generalizations about Paul's taste in music though, besides "you know a lot more about music then most of the rest of us."

Isn't Google wonderful?  :-)

I'm going to guess Boehmer was followed around by the Secret Service. He was an East German Marxist, right?

From West  Berlin, I think.  But he lives in Holland now, because he hates Germany.  He is also one of the funniest people I know (through my son playing his music) - you should just hear  him on the secret services!  The notes to one of the pieces my son plays on a record of his music describe one of the sounds on the tape of effects that go with it as "pissing on the floor behind a pillar in St Peter's, Rome at night".  Konrad Boehmer (http://cassland.org/images/KonradNic.jpg) with my son at his wedding.

Quote
Beat Furrer isn't several people. He's just Swiss (I think).

Swiss birth, Austrian nationality.

Here's some Earnest Cox (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,19792.msg627833.html#msg627833) which I uploaded when I first came here.  I wouldn't say it's particularly notable, though.  I think they've pretty much stopped playing, preferring to give their time to their motorcycle training business.

Interesting interpretation, but not very accurate. I suspect that part of the reason you guessed so poorly is that you were assuming I'm male. (Which is curious in and of itself - does that mean my musical taste clocks as male or is this just the 'no girls on the internet'/'assume male unless otherwise indicated' bias?) Also: Mullets are abomination that should not have been allowed to continue.

Most of my most played is like...Marilyn Manson, due ot my short burst of obsession with him. I have no shame (but a little guilt).

However, if my library didn't routinely crash every year or so, Pink Floyd, Beatles, and Bob Dylan would be dominating the top played.

(I don't have last.fm, no)

So in that spirit, I'll just rattle off a few things:

Things I used to listen to way too much:

Beatles
Queen
Led Zeppelin
Heart
Moody Blues
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
Melanie
Nickelback (I have no shame, only guilt)
Paul Simon
Emerson, Lake and Palmer
The Who

Things I have recently (past year or so) ended up listening to far too much of:

Ministry
Pearl Jam
White/Rob Zombie
Apocalyptica
The Flaming Lips
Metallica
Black Sabbath
Marilyn Manson
Traffic
The Books
Rush
Guns 'n' Roses

Recently been listening to a lot of:

Franz Ferdinand
Muse
Billy Joe Shaver
Iron & Wine
Daft Punk
You Say Party! We Say Die!
Cat Stevens
Mogwai
Explosions in the Sky
Grizzly Bear

So, er, try to judge me.

You can sort of see the phases I went through. It's amusing...to me, anyways.

Edit: Also put Bob Dylan into all of those categories, and Tom Waits onto the last one.
