Title: WCDT 23-27 August 2010 (1736-1740)
Post by: jwhouk on 22 Aug 2010, 18:21
Now for the speculation: will we see the two of them in bed together on Monday?

Doubtful.

At least, that's what the magic 8-ball said.

If I were to predict anything, it's that Faye panics, they back off a little, and continue this dance that's not holding people's interest the way you'd think it would. I suspect we'll shift to some other storyline, though.

Wildcard: Sven happens by and sees them, but they don't see him. But Gina Biggs covered that last Thursday, so I don't expect lighting to strike twice.

my god jeph you are a sick pervert

i am perhaps even worse for pointing this out

this was an edit:

ALSO. this made me sad but happy and then sad again because it reminded me of this girl i recently hung out with and made out with and saw blue man group with and won't be able to see again for at least a few weeks (but who i never get to see (even though we've been super close for 6 years) so this is pretty good).

This strip is so cute, I'm squeeing inside like a preteen girl.

Also, this is by far the happiest and most at peace I ever recall seeing Faye. While I don't "ship" anyone in this comic in particular, I hope this goes better for her than the thing with Sven.

"Why Angus, are those glasses in your pocket...?"

This strip was wonderfully well done.  All the emotions are right on the money, and damn, Faye looks...

Wait is that... happy?

Dayum...

And now Angus wakes up tomorrow and goes to get his daily coffee (with soy milk of course :-P), and asks Faye how she liked the date, only to have her look at him funny and ask wtf he's smoking.  He then explains what happened, and when he gets to the part about them kissing and him grabbing her ass, she throws a right jab into his jaw.  As he lays on the ground dazed, he realizes it was all just a dream

I think that Faye is doing this the right way now.

Ps.
What does Sassapalooza or OTP mean?
Title: Re: WCDT 23-27 August 2010
Post by: Carl-E on 23 Aug 2010, 01:08
OTP = One True Pairing, a fandom term for a love that's meant to be (whether the characters - or anyone else - realize it).

Sassapalooza is a take off on Lollapalooza, a term confiscated by a multi-artist concert tour.

So it's the Lollapalooza of sass.  Or something.

I can't get over how cute this comic is. And I'd need a barfbag if I hadn't been shipping Faye/Angus since early 2006 when he was just Argument Guy.

Don't screw it up, Faye!

So.  Everyone in the QC-niverse is telling Faye and Angus to hook up, and so they do, and their first date goes extremely well, and they're both happy, and there is no drama of any kind taking place.  Which can only mean Jeph's planning something.  You *know* he's planning something.  He enjoys having his characters be happy and stress-free about as much as Stan Lee does his characters.  Faye is entirely too happy, and this is entirely too cute, for there not to be some kind of hella-hella drama right around the corner.

Following my Jeph-Is-Stan-Lee theory, I predict the hella drama will involve Faye's dad coming inexplicably back to life, with the ability to manipulate metal.  And a love of bluegrass music.

My biggest fear is that Faye freaks out over something and pushes him away the next morning. Things are going far better than I had dared hope, and I really hope the other shoe doesn't drop. Ever. It's wonderful to see her so happy and content. Her face in panel four = DAAWWW (:

So far no radioactive spiders/toxic waste/gamma or cosmic radiation in sight - Stan Lee can't be involved.

No!  Faye, why didn't you let Angus walk you home?  The mugger would have passed you by if you were with someone else.  He wouldn't have shot you, and you wouldn't be dead, and Angus wouldn't have become Spider-man.

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought this was the thread for the week of the 30th.

Faye's dad is all of the summers clan. Every single one of them, even the girls. That's why he had to kill himself.

Also, Angus will tomorrow be run over by a gangster after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. For some reason* this will give him eye-lasers and a crew cut.

So, to sum up: Faye looks happy. TOO happy.
Then add something about this violating some fundamental law of the QC-verse, which will naturally seek to regain equila equale balance.

You know, Jeph could simply let Fay be happy for a while while he proceeds to shit on develop Marigold, Sven, and/or possibly Dale.

Faye's been dragged around for 7 years. Can't a girl finally have some happiness without everyone speculating it's ALL GOING TO GO WRONG? Marten and Spookypants have had a fully-functional relationship since late 2005. Why can't Faye?

Ewwwww!

This is definitely true love. Otherwise, Faye would flat out flatten any guy who grabbed her left buttock.

Now, her right buttock is up for grabs by anyone. It's the left one that's out of bounds.

Wow, doting nose-kiss AND saucy buttgrab, very nice.     It's good to see Faye happy.  But don't worry, guys!  When Faye remembers that she left her sweater/jacket at the restaurant, she'll head back there, alone, but she won't meet Sven, and she won't meet her undead Dad.  She'll just grab her sweater and head home again -- only to be run over by a tank by Dale, who has decided to gank Marigold IRL.  Dun-dun-DUNNNNN.

 :-P

While I'm sure there are still angsty times ahead for Faye, I kinda doubt that Jeph will be heavy-handed about it.  Awkwardness and sass will continue to ensue.

Now here's something pleasant and non-Toto-related for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk)

Now that movie was god-awful, even sitting in Stallone's body of work.

Of the Bianchis, best I recall, only one didn't ninja-grope Faye in some fashion. And I don't recall Faye ever looking this happy when any of them had hold of her fundament.

As for buses taking Angus out of the picture, I don't think Jeph does Deus Machina ex Machina-style stuff, with the possible exception of Deathbot 9000. And maybe the BFbot. Anyway, no one has died 'onstage' in QC unless you count Faye's father, which I don't, since it occurred in a flashback. So Angus' survival seems pretty likely.

My comment on Monday's comic got stuck in the other thread, so i have to add it here:

Quote
DAMMIT THIS COMIC IS SO DAMN SWEEEEEEEET AND CUUUUUUTE

i want that   :-(

dammit, I've got to get out there again and meet some nice ladies.  Haven't been on a date in almost a year. Probably not the best thing for a guy who just turned 32.

As for today's comic: another gem.  Faye finally frees herself of the guilt and the what-ifs re: Marten.  That question... is everything.  It feels like she finally understands that things worked out the way they were supposed to.  I can see herself beating herself up over the potential that she was unable to realize with Marten.  Not consciously, but it was probably always there in the back of her head.  But now she is finally able to completely move on, and be happy.

Guitars are notoriously phallic, and check out the Guitar Topic (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,16326.0.html) thread on this board. All the furtive rustling your heart could desire! And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVG9u_nxWBI) is guitar gorn. Google image search: Sorayama sexy robot to get an idea of Pintsize's centrefold (Rather creepy, and slightly NSFW).

Poor Marten. Confused? Totoly. Today's comic exceptionally excellent IMHO.

So much time was spent making Sven a foil for Marten... a skinny indie rock nerd, a guitar-player and songwriter, a connection to Dora, even a similar sense of humour.  Except, of course, he was an amoral, womanising asshole version of Marten.  Yes, one with a soul who can be nice and charming and has feelings, but he was always put up as sort of an Anti-Marten.  He never really formed any attachment with the rest of the gang, and aside from occasionally hanging out with his siter and bumping uglies with Faye, didn't interact with the others except for a few rare occasions.

Angus has been set up from day one to NOT be like Marten.  He's the first guy who seems geniunely unafraid of Faye, can actually hold his own in witty banter, but has none of the music-nerd cred that was basically what started Marten and Faye's friendship.  Instead of following her around with doe-eyes, or doing everything he can think of to get into her pants, he's been perfectly willing since day one to slap her with a sassy retort and walk away, even if he does come back for another round soon after.  He's formed genuine friendships with everyone by being persistent, nice, and just weird enough to fit into their group.

When Faye couldn't form a relationship with Marten, she clearly wasn't over him.  She said as much more than once.  And when she had a weak moment around Sven, she slept with him because he was the closest she could get to the guy she wanted and couldn't have.  And then, when Sven proved he was definitely *not* as decent a guy as Marten, she walked away.  And she kept suffering because she still wasn't over Marten, not really.  But now?  After a date and a goodnight kiss from Angus, she finds that she finally is.

In short:
Angus McPhee, the line of your ancestors stretches back to Valhalla.  Ride, my son.  Ride 'til you find them.

I-I guess this means Faye and I were never meant to be.*

Guitars are notoriously phallic.

That would explain any number of pictorials, including one I remember from my youth: girl and guitar, together in a hammock. It was an acoustic, a dreadnought. Dear god, it was the same size as she was.

Of course, my thoughts turn from this to old pics of Jimmy Page, shirt open, sweaty, with his Les Paul's neck pointed up.

Dear god, the depravity…

*As if. Were Faye real and us acquainted, we'd have done the Thunderdome thing long ago.

Edit: Btw, shouldn't it be totolly about Toto? :-D

Muhaha, I totally agree, even more so since I just watched episode 21 of Excel Saga, where it's put Up To Eleven (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UpToEleven) (like everything else in the series, really - except in the last episode, where it's put Up To Twelve).

Now, about this "Guitar Porn" thing, it depends of what you call "porn". For example, the website Food Porn Daily (http://foodporndaily.com/), despite having "porn" in its name, is perfectly SFW. It's totally NSFD*, however.

Pintsize looking at the PC World centerfold cracked me up, as did "Guitar Porn" (which essentially means that Marten and Pintsize were both looking at porn while hanging out together, hmmm), but I really liked Faye ruffling Marten's hair. Awwww.  Kinda surprised Spookbutt isn't already all over Faye asking for details, but maybe that'll be next strip.  Unless we skip to tomorrow.

Also, I am pleased to report that despite QC's Toto-infusion, none of their songs are locked in my head anymore and I'm back to having that song from the end of Futurama's Lethal Inspection in there.

Angus will be mugged and kidnapped, but saved by the Vespavenger, who reveals that she is only there to kick HIS ass for putting down Marigold. A mysterious figure comes to save the day, and is revealed to be...a mysterious figure in Orc cosplay.
Orc-Woman Kicks the shit out of Vespavenger, while her associate, Pizza Girl, breaks through the window and frees Angus. Angus is like 'The fuck is going on' and Pizza Girl takes him into a back alley and revelas the truth about herself and Orc-Woman...That is, Sara and Marigold.

Faye's Dad turns out to be a time traveler, and, after seeing how she becomes with himself there for her, he concludes that the only way to fix it is to convice his future-from-point-of-time-travel self to commit suicide. He goes to the future afterwards, and watches her daughter grow up, but a complication arises...
Due to his holographic image projector, he appears to be a boy about Faye's age. Faye falls in love with him, and Faye's Dad needs to go along with it to perpetuate the illusion. However, a complication arises when Faye gets pregnant.
Angus must explain to Faye that he is her dad, and convinces her to have an abortion.

The last comic of the week is a single-panel comic of Yelling Bird, saying 'AND THEN THEY ALL FUCKED. APRIL FOOLS, CUNTS.'

New drama: does Marten realize he's not over Faye? It's seemed to me like things with Dora have been fizzling, especially after then meh way he reacted to her new hair, and the way she's been all serious/bossy/nag lately... Faye might realize she's over Marten, but now I think the story will be Marten not ready to let go of Faye like that...

Love how Marigold's turned the dancing thing around on Angus. I wonder if Faye's prancing around in her room. If she is, that will be when Dora shows up. I think it's some sort of natural law, or maybe her sixth sense (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=386) at work.

I totally agree. Fantastic comic. My feeling is that it's not necessarily totally closing the door on a possible relationship in the (far) future, it's just that Faye has closed the door on regret. I'm being wishy-washy on the Faye/Marten thing because I don't necessarily think (or particularly desire) the comic will go in that direction at some point, more that if circumstances eventually lead that direction, Faye won't be doing it for reasons of finding out if she made a mistake earlier, but because it would be right for her at that time.

Character moments like this are rare gold to a writer, and I just want to express my appreciation.

The strip was awesome -- loved Marigold turning the surprise-dance-along tables on Angus.  ^_^  And Momo gamely dancing too, despite apparently not having downloaded the Ballet Program, was a nice touch!  Now I want to see the entire cast celebration booty-dancing!  Which will probably never happen, since it'd be too hard to get them all in-frame.  Ooooh, but maybe a good idea for a poster . . .

Yeah, I definitely got a Travolta Stayin' Alive vibe from the first second panel, but I really think the techno of the video catches the mood better.

Are they going to break up over a Toto song? :P

If they do, it seems like one of those times when the awful reason to break up compounds and makes Marten do something really douchey. He can send her a text message in that weird shorthand people use for messaging. It would go a little something like this: we shd break up it's not me btw it's u. toto rlz

Anyway, if Marten is feeling depressed about his relationship over a Toto song perhaps they need to shake things up a bit. As I understand it, it is normal for couples to feel a little bit off when they first move in together as the mystery is completely gone after that. The way he is acting it is almost like he is wondering whether things would be better with Faye, but at least we know that if he does try to go down that road, Angus already chose the right song.

While I'm aware that arguing against fanboy paranoia is like trying to hold back the ocean with a broom made entirely of dicks, I'd point out that Marten cannot be using the same yardstick to test his relationship with Dora.  Why?  Because he HAS NO GODDAMN IDEA WHAT FAYE WAS TALKING ABOUT.  He then promptly asked his girlfriend a confusing cryptic question, and the sleepy lady in focus responded that she dislikes toto and was grumpy at being woken up for that.  In other words, a perfectly reasonable situation with a perfectly reasonable response, even with Marten's reaction of feeling a bit sad at being grumped at.

THIS IS ALL PERFECTLY RATIONAL AND SENSIBLE.

That being said, fanboy paranoia is what it is and this is gonna snowball.  And this is Jeph writing, who just loves him some hella-hella drama.  Therefore, I cast aside my useless dick-broom, and I let the ocean come.

Cue a conversation with a bearded Steve at some point?

Marten is always playing the "nice guy" role I guess. Meaning that when it comes to Faye being happy, he's happy, but I'm guessing still not quite over the fact that she's dating. Toto is now the yardstick at which one measures everything about the other person. Marten does get trampled on, but he also takes music seriously.

He's in a shitter of a situation really; he's now getting what Faye got a good few years ago when Marty + Dora started dating.

WHAT? WHAT? Rational and sensible have no place in modern romantic relationships!! Where have you been?

Seriously though, while it does seem like Marten didn't know what Faye was talking about when she asked him about the Toto song, his asking Dora the same question implies that he figured it out after Faye went to bed. Too bad he's in his typical no-win situation; he likes a different song than Faye, and he and Dora don't even like the same band. Oops, screwed again.

Then again, different musical tastes is no reason to break up with someone. While people do bond over similar musical tastes, I'll bet an number of you are in long-term relationships where you and your SO don't even listen to the same genre of music. Thankfully, with modern music players and headphones, that never needs to be an issue. Just blast your music out loud when your SO isn't around...

I've actually really enjoyed this week's strips, we've seem some pretty good character interaction and a real sense of things moving forwards. I still find the choice of band baffling.

Before today's comic, I thought you were crazy.  Now, it seems you are most prescient!!

Freeeeeeeaky.

I think this is another great comic in the line of the last 3.  Maybe not as "squueeeeeee kawaiiiiii" as the other 3, but still great.  The fourth panel just says SO much without using any words....  man, there's just alot running through Marten's mind.  Good thing he's got Steve to talk to about things.  I don't think it'll make him break up with Dora, or even that their relationship is in trouble - it just means he has to go through a little introspection, a little mourning period.  While it's not something one would ever tell their partner about, I think it's perfectly normal, and makes sense.  There was always going to be that part of him that feelings for Faye, and that part finally got its last chance to poke out its head.  Marten probably forgot it was there - but now will be his opportunity to say goodbye to it once and for all.  He'll miss it - but in time, he'll learn to live without it.

Also, how many of us have had a cryptic question asked by a significant other?  Especially at a time when, when you wake up later, you will have forgotten completely about it.  There's obviously something preying on their mind, but you have no idea what or why, and never will.

I'm with you on that.    The whole Toto thing came out of a conversation that was obviously about guilty musical pleasures, though, so it's not like these folks are all massive Toto fans.  Then again, maybe Jeph is saying that if you scratch the surface of an indie nerd you'll find a fan of shrill top 40 soft rock/synth-pop.

And I agree with Tergon that the exchange between Marten and Dora was rational or at least understandable from both perspectives.  The thing is, Marten and Dora are past the early relationship/"honeymoon" phase, as they established in a previous comic -- I think seeing Faye in the glow of the early phase just made Marten miss that and caused him to wonder about his own relationship.  He's got the "late-night worries" but he'll get past it.

And . . . dick-broom?  Lemme guess, once you start sweeping, the bristles get bigger, but not as big as you expected, and not all at the same time . . .

Is Marten actually bothered that Dora doesn't like Toto?

It's fine if he's becoming more tolerant of popular music, but souring a relationship because somebody else doesn't like it is a little obnoxious.  Especially since it bears the implication that all people who don't like popular music are just hipsters pretending not to in order to seem cool.

I hope this isn't leading to a fan-servicy Marten/Faye relationship.  Just for once in a work of fiction I'd like to see the most obvious will they/won't they couple move on and get lives of their own instead of going for the fairy-tale romantic-comedy fan-pleaser ending.

QC used to assert itself against formula 'Pair these two existing characters together for fun' romances.  I hope it can get back to that.

Not popular enough, let's go with Satchmo.
First, as Carl points out, the song was the point. Second, if popularity is the criteria, then there's a problem. Pops has very little in the best-known stuff from his catalog that's suitable for that panel; by and large, Armstrong's most popular music is relentlessly cheerful, or at worst wistful. For every "St. James Infirmary" there seems to be several "Big Butter and Egg Man's." That could be because he was a jazz musician, not a bluesman.

Yeah, the preponderance of opinion & reason is clearly against Marten-Faye at this point, & has been for a few years...
But some little vestigial part of me always WANTED to see M&F together, and the primal reptile brain doesn't give up its desires just because other humans have convincing rational arguments.

Marten may be troubled, and Sven may have something else to add to his blue funk, but Faye is most likely to freak out in the morning when she realizes, well, whatever it is she thinks tonight means by then.

Someone pointed out (more or less) that Faye's headpat was her 'revenge' on Marten for hooking up with Dora. God, I hope not, since that would make her the pettiest, least self-aware shit on the planet. I do think Faye's trying to tell herself it wouldn't have worked between Marten and her, constructing one of those fictions we so love to create after the fact to make ourselves feel better. The more I think about it, though, the more I wonder what right she has to give a dismissive head-pat*. It wasn't Marten who called things to a halt, nor who would not 'allow' him to wait for her, nor who strung him along all that time before. Maybe she couldn't, maybe she wouldn't, but either way, Faye's the one who didn't give them a chance.

The more I think about it, the less Marten's look means the thrill is gone and the more it means he regrets what he missed, even if it's through no fault of his own. Of course, Dora has no way of knowing, but it is too bad she's still sleep-deprived. It may be nothing, but it may be she could've headed off a wagonload of trouble just then with a different response. Though, I have to admit, it was candid and not unexpected from a fan of Opeth.

So then am I the only one here bothered by how tiny their pillows are?

BOY am I glad someone mentioned this. What are they sleeping on, stolen airline pillows?

Both. Proportionally, the pillows should at least cover the width of the bed, if it's a full sized bed and standard sized pillows. so unless that's a Califoria King and those are travel pillows... they are too small.

I've had a suspicion for awhile now that Maren and Dora's relationship is not going to last.

I'm not exactly sure on comic time, but I'd wager a guess that Marten has been dating Dora for well over a year now. Now I know that relationships start with an initial flare that dies down, but their relationship is looking seriously stagnated from my side. Whether it's from hesitation on Marten's part, Dora's paranoia, or a little of both, the pair seem like they are going nowhere, fast.

I believe that Marten's look in the last panel was something more than Dora brushing him off. I think Marten just finally realized that Faye is over him, and that his chance is very much gone. Even though Marten has stayed incredibly faithful to Dora and seemed to have no interest in another girl, he has always had the thought in the back of his head, that at any time he could have Faye. If things didn't work out with Dora, he figured, Faye could always be right there.

But now that's gone, and Marten has to take a hard look at where he is. Alone, in a relationship that is going nowhere fast, suddenly without his subconscious safety net. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty contemplative there myself.

This is all on Marten's head now: Dora knows nothing about this. Maybe he'll just let the thought rest and leave it at that. Maybe he'll try to advance his own relationship. Maybe he'll panic, and in his haste, ruin it. I don't know, I'm not Jeph and I don't have a complete grasp on the minds of the characters.

All I know is that look Marten is showing us means some changes for him, one way or another.

Only God, Professor X and Jeph himself know what exactly's running through Marty's head at that moment, but I think we can all take a pretty decent guess that it was somehow relationship-brand awkwardness.  And you just *know* it's gonna crop up and cause some troubles.

Score! I knew Faye would crack.

Now, we're left wondering if the cause of Marten's protrusion is an agitated, panicky Faye, or having just come away from sharing a bed with a possibly nekkid Dora. I'm hoping that it's the later, because the former is really, really twisted. Even a comic character doesn't need that kind of fetish.

I am now over my fanboy rage. Funny as hell.

As for the alternates, my fave is the third one down. True story: I'm with a girl, I'm hanging out (in the same way Marten was) she says, "Do. Not. Move." and slowly raises her hand. I close my eyes, thinking she's about to smack a fly.

She slaps my balls. HARD.

After my vision clears, I say "You got it, right?"

She looks at me for a moment, then says, "Got what?"

I glare at her, she just says "Put those away, or stop wearing boxers!" and leaves the room.

That is the only story about me getting hit in the balls that I think is funny. The rest are way too painful, and all involve me hitting back.

That should have been one of the stories where you hit back. Seriously, she had no call to smack you in the nuts like that unless you were about to rape her or something. Otherwise she was just being a hellbitch.

Oh, HELL yeah!  That's Barbara Feldon, a.k.a. Agent 99 from "Get Smart."  MORE brilliance from Mel Brooks.  I used to LOOOOVE watching that show when I was a kid!  (In reruns on Nick at Nite, that is.)  Oh yeah, I'd know her anywhere.

All I can say is, there's a reason I wear briefs.  Between Marten and Sven, boxers just can't handle the job.

Aaagh, no way man, briefs bunch up just a little too much, and they just seem like little-boy underwear to me (since I wore them as a kid, I guess.)  The only thing worse than briefs are boxers.  Maaaan, boxers suuuuck!

Boxer briefs all the way.  Best underwear ever.

This is exactly what I was thinking.  At first there was an awkwardness in that panel, but you read the next panel and think "oh, okay."  Then you go back to re-read it and notice that Marten stammered a little.  I mean I'm never one to over analyze (HAH) but that *could* mean something significant on Marten's end..

I think it really depends on the kind of pants he is wearing, perhaps he simply forgot to button up a button and there is no turgidity at all. I am not sure whether that is more or less embarrassing for a dude, to be seen with a boner at an awkward time or to be seen without one at all. Anyone care to weigh in on that?

I'm just gonna say that pretty much no matter what, getting accidentally seen with a raging boner by someone who you don't want to see said boner, is infinitely worse than the absence of the boner.  But then surprise unwanted dick-reveals are embarassing, pretty much no matter what.

I'd say that he's probably not standing at attention, given that Faye didn't respond with screaming / beating / some other kind of abuse.  Though on the other hand... he's got his arms around a girl he acknowledges that he finds damn hot, who he occasionally has sexy dreams about, who he until fairly recently had strong feelings for, and who is currently not wearing any pants as she curls up against him on a dark couch.  I mean, yes, it's gross and inappropriate, but find me a guy who *wouldn't* get a little bit not-so-little in that situation.  So while I suspect that given how things have turned out, no, he wasn't cracking a stiffy, but there's... potential.

I think that of greater significance is that pause and stammer on his part when Faye looks up at him.  Boner or no, he's revealing SOMETHING that he probably wishes he hadn't.  And it's not necessarily his penis.

Oh boxers, you win again!  Damn ye and your baffling button-that-must-be-buttoned!     (Seriously though, why would someone not button that?  Why wear them at all if you're just gonna poke out anyway?)

As to Marten having resurgent feelings for Faye . . . I dunno.  I suppose it can't be ruled out, but my interpretation is that Marty's feeling some post-honeymoon-period doldrums with Dora (if indeed he's actually wondering how much they really have in common) but isn't wishing for something romantic with Faye.  Granted, Marten and Faye hooking up at this point would hurt more people now that Faye's started dating someone she cares about -- I guess whether that happens depends on whether Jeph wants to send an angst-laden daisy-cutter through his characters at this point.  Personally, I think Marten may have been wondering if Faye would even need him anymore, as a friend, an unasked question that was answered in today's trip in the emphatic affirmative.  She needs a friend right now (panic attacks are no fun), and busting a move on her while she's that vulnerable would be a douche move, something Marten is well aware of and wouldn't do.  He has his hapless moments, but is ultimately unselfish.

My fave of the tumblr alt endings is the first one.  ^_^  For some reason, I wanted there to be a moray eel version, with the eel coming up and biting Faye's finger.

And since this song is now in my head because of earlier posts, behold as I share a link (no, it's not Toto, but it's very 80's): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZneyAp0viXk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZneyAp0viXk)

Yeah, maybe when you're 15. But I think that most mature males who genuinely care about the woman pouring her heart out to him would not be sporting a stiffy at that time. If it's inevitable that a man would, then shit, I've just lost some faith in the male sex.

Hey now, I said that I didn't think he was sporting an erection at the time, I just acknowledged the possibility.  I mean it's pretty hard to turn off the cute-girl-cuddling-me reflex, especially when it's someone you've lusted after for a while, and double especially if NEITHER OF YOU ARE WEARING PANTS.
Not saying he'd be sleazy enough to act on it, and he probably wasn't cracking wood anyway.  Just saying... y'know, as a guy, it's possible.

Poor Faye. I don't know why you all are wailing about Marten/Faye still, when clearly the important thing here is that Faye is having an honest to goodness panic attack. Marten Jr was able to distract her from her crippling anxiety, and no, he wasn't popping a boner, jeebus, guys...

A. People, he wasn't hard.

B. The primary objectives of male underwear are to cover up, of course, but more importantly to keep junk from waving around and from sticking to itself or your leg from body heat+sweat. Thus, buttons (if your undies have them) aren't really important to guys, and just get in the way when they need to pee, since ordinarily your penis isn't going to pop out ( in this case, his head probably fell at rest at just the wrong position.)

That's some of it, but I suspect Faye's overall abandonment issues are looming much larger right now. Of course, Sven's tryst did little to alleviate those.

What would be amusing is if Dora came out, noticed Marten's condition, sighed, and hand-led him back into the bedroom, muttering something about sweeping back the tide.

It's a matter of age/perspective. There is an inverse ratio between age and how embarrassing an erection is, modified by such factors as the number, gender, and prudery of witnesses, not forgetting, of course, individual modesty or utter lack thereof.

And in Marten's defense, in my experience those buttons can come undone rather easily. I think the idea is quick access, paired with the strange notion that it's not expected you'll lounge about in your underwear with people who would rather not see what you have inside it.

What could possibly be awkward about finding your boyfriend platonicly hugging another girl?

I don't think he's having an erection, erection show in any underwear and will be awkward without poking out. Instead it can just be shifted in the wrong position. Im not saying his peis might be in the lowest stance either, as having a pantless girl you had feelings for before will probably excite it a bit but not all the way.

Please, remember our animal part(s) are millions of years older, and have their own 'brains', which the recent civilized additions have little or no control over...   [Yeah, i think that faith is misplaced.]

If I were in Marten's position, holding the trembling woman I loved and wanted all those years, in the middle of the night, in the dark, neither of us wearing pants, my SO having just bluntly told me to go away, ...

[Hey, isn't this the closest (& least dressed) these two (the whole early QC's romantic leads!*) have ever been, together?  Not to mention (how to put this delicately) the only time Faye has set eyes on Little Marten...? ]

Thinking about Friday's strip again this morning (It's Saturday here; you're living in the past!) I had a Fridge Logic (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FridgeLogic) moment. Just how did Faye get Marten to come to his bedroom door? Telepathic messages or just loud knocking? Sure, Marten might have been awake, sleeplessly gazing up at the ceiling, but Faye didn't know that. Marten must be a light sleeper, or Dora a really heavy one, or both.

I love that nobody here is arguing that Marten actually has a boner in that comic.  We all seem to agree that while, yes, it's POSSIBLE a man might get involuntarily erect in that situation, in this comic, that's clearly not happened.  Yet the argument rages... somehow.  :P

I was going to say that this is probably not what Jeph was expecting us to focus on when he drew the comic, instead wanting the character development and drama to take the forefront, but... well, then I remembered who we're talking about.

2.) When I first read it, yeah, I thought Marten had a boner.  But then I re-read and decided that it was just unfortunate positioning.

3.) It occurs to me that Dora may have had worry at the back of her mind concerning Angus and Faye's blossoming relationship, and the effect it might have on Marten.  She's exhibited insecurity in the past over his feelings toward Faye.  If Faye did knock on their door, she may be awake right now and wondering what is going on.  I would not be at all surprised if she walks in, and an argument ensues.

4.) Have to say, I've been pretty thrilled with this arc.  I've been rooting for Fayngus since 779 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=779).

We all know it's true.
Not exactly. Combine the two, using the first two balloons from the first panel, and the third from the second panel, and then you may have something.

'Cause, after all, it's usually fart jokes. :-)

So I'm hoping (in vain, I am sure) that by Friday we will see the following:
- Faye visit her therapist and she helps Faye not be so scared
- Faye talks to Angus without freaking out/running away/pushing him away/breaking things off
and just maybe...
- Faye having a deep conversation with Angus about her dad and puts more ghosts to rest

I'm not staying that all of these will be completed and resolved by Friday (I'm sure it would take weeks) but I hope that it all happens, for the health, growth, and well-being of Fayngus, which I have also been waiting for since the late 700's (:

Correct.  Which means that Jeph is, by extention, Quentin Tarantino.  Which means the comic is now called Reservoir Content.  Or possibly Questionable Pulp.

You forgot "From Dusk Til Dora" and "Kill Marten"

Shouldn't that be Kill Sven ?

Unrelated to the boners: The place where I work (5 Guys Burgers and Fries) played 'Africa' today and I was the only one who was happy

Since QT was in and helped write Dusk 'Til Dawn, but didn't direct, I think it doesn't qualify. OTOH, you missed Dora Brown and Insufferable Anthros.

Maybe. But why settle for that when you can have Kill Wil?  Given her ability both to fly off the handle and hold a grudge, I suspect Penelope would make a better Bride than Faye. Of course, you could have Gank Gang; Hanners is probably a natural.

Yes! With... Dora as O-Ren Ishii (dye her hair black again)? Marten as Johnny Mo, leader of the Crazy 88? Momo or Tai as Go-go Yubari? Cosette as Sophie Fatale (she's accident-prone enough to get her arm cut off by a bacon-slicer, never mind a samurai sword)? Faye as Vernita Green (she's got that domesticity/brutal violence thing going)? Hanner-scar as Elle Driver? Steve as Bud? Pintsize as Pai Mei? Angus as Hattori Hanzo? Sorry, my brain just filed for divorce...

The Weekend Silly Season!   :)    I ... am happy. And i forgot about Faye's therapist - yes, it's Definitely Time to go see her again...

I once had a therapist that hot, and...  well, the transference and countertransference issues were rearing their lovely heads.

"Life is funny."  One of my favorite quotes, and where better than a webcomic?

The other day "Rosanna" played at my workplace, but no one was around to enjoy it with me.

I'd never heard it before; I thought it was saying "Hosanna" at first, and I was all like "shit y'all, that don't make no sense" and then I listened a little harder and then I was like "whoa" and then yeah.

And then run for the hills, 'cause the End just has to be Nigh. On the plus side, that might mean no more damn dirty dinky dogs. We'll probably have to have them for dinner as the 'guest of honor.'

This is Marten's second  (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1328) late-night-sigh (Ok, he didn't sigh this time, but still...)
...And within a few weeks of that strip, we had the "Sven The Douchebag" arc.

This is why I take that look in today's last panel with trepidation. SOMEone in this strip is about to get dumped on by an ocean of fecal matter that no dick-broom can sweep away.

...WOW was I right.

I just think we all should remember something: if Marten sighs in the middle of the night, it's time to brace yourselves for Teh Drama.
