In about 1989 the pianist Aki Takahashi commissioned arrangements of Beatles songs from 47 contemporary composers, including John Cage.  The project led to four Japanese CDs, of which I got the first easily (it's relatively common, because it was issued in the US as well as Japan), the second simply cannot be found now by any means (I'm not saying how I come to have a rip), and the third and fourth I had to get copies shipped from Japan.

There are countless touchstones, but the sublime attack often recalls late-Sixties Grateful Dead, when their songs still had garage-rock drive but were exploding every which way.

Earth & Fire - Earth & Fire [1970]


Great debut album..alittle less proggy than their later stuff, but still very warm and melodic.

Earth and Fire were a progressive rock group formed in the Netherlands by brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts. Most popular in the 1970s, Earth and Fire came to produce many chart topping hits in the Dutch pop scene. Though they experienced success in the Netherlands, their music never quite made it to England or the Americas.

The new Black Keys doesn't suck, but it is kind of unnecessarily overproduced and cluttered and less raw-bluesy, IMO.  Not as good as their first few albums, but still good.

EDIT: Also, I'll probably upload some stuff later today. Raleigh Moncrief, Baxter Dury, Co La, some bandcamp stuff maybe.

Auerbach and Carney never should've stopped recording in their basements/abandoned factories. Rubber Factory was brilliant. They haven't done anything half as good since. El Camino is better than their previous one at least.


I've been loving this album here lately. Probably because i'm such an utter failure romantically.

The multi-instrumentalist Williams released a series of singles through Sarah Records and these were collected on the album London Weekend. Twenty years on, Another Sunny Day seem to epitomise the Sarah sound: a vulnerable, poignant puree of teenage angst and 60s-tinged melodies, reminiscent of The Pastels or Television Personalities."

Mikal Cronin - s/t (2011, Trouble in Mind) (garage/power-pop/psychedelic)

On his eponymous debut, Mikal Cronin proves he can hold his own. It's an album of wistful, psychedelic pop that pits lush and layered arrangements against needle-pinning power chords. Like Segall's latest, Goodbye Bread, Cronin's solo turn finds him dialing back his thrashier impulses in order to clear space for singer-songwriter-style introspection.

But when the curtain of lysergic gristle is pulled aside, it turns out that they're not the same person, after all. Even when he goes all Neil Young, Segall still retains an affable beach-dude demeanor. Cronin turns out to be the more vulnerable voice-- Elliott Smith in throwback dress, minus the self-loathing. And, like Smith, he has an ear for arrangements.

I'm a little skeptical. Everytime someone's said a band had shoegaze and black metal elements, they've ended up sounding nothing like either of the two, and mostly like crap.

That Mikel Cronin album though..took a couple songs to get going, but it's very good.

Like the new wave of take-rave-back-to-the-kids producers, Rustie is also fearless about rehabilitating and reinventing the genre's cheesiest and most pleasurable moments, the stuff dubstep's more glower-prone producers wouldn't even claim as being part of the genre's DNA...[he] is operating in a world where radio producers have already plundered dubstep for fresh sounds, and as if knowing he's now competing as much with Billboard hit-makers, his tracks have the maximalist zeal of Max Martin bubblegum...He shares the make-it-immediate urge of Deadmau5 and his ilk but has no time for their simplicity or brutality. One of the best things about Glass Swords is that, for all of its pop-goes-clubbing bluster, it's also as psychedelic, where the devil's in the zillion little details zigzagging across the tracks-- as you'd expect from a Warp album-- whether we're talking their classic-era IDM records or more recent signings like Flying Lotus.

Andy Stott - We Stay Together EP (2011) [experimental/techno)

This is minutely stratified music. It might be lo-fi, but it's not the kind that obscures; Stott's rough textures merely blur the lines between the elements. This dynamic turns a fairly straightforward techno thumper like "Bad Wires" into a heaving mass of gravelly shakers and dust-eaten drums, and the otherwise funky "Cherry Eye" into a swirling watercolour punctured by an unforgiving kickdrum. We get a glimmer of hope with the title track, based around a mercilessly phased sample, but it's unceremoniously stomped out by the hellish closer "Cracked."

I've spent a lot of time this year complaining about the complacency of dub techno, pondering its inevitable death as a viable genre. But maybe these burning doldrums are a good place to be, because the trickery that Andy Stott is performing on the genre's corpse is as morbidly exciting as the foreboding beats he carves out of prehistoric stone.

But the disk starts with Paul McCartney's second serious essay in a classical music form (after the Liverpool Oratorio), which is a piano piece called "A Leaf".  This has become better known in a later orchestral version, but here it is as originally written.

Miami graphic designer Scott Hansen returns from a very, very long hiatus to release his second LP of shimmering electronica. Is there any way to describe the music of Tycho other than 'shimmering'? Not really...The Tycho sound is one of pink sunsets, shuffling hipsters and old video hardware - basically Boards of Canada washed up on the shores of San Francisco. It's also irresistibly good, which might explain why Hansen hasn't dared mess with the formula that won him so many accolades back in 2004.

Arbiter is kind of self described as nerdy metal.  Don't let that mislead you, though, because these guys tear things up.  Basically they plan on putting out concept albums that have fairly large, sprawling back-stories to them in order to create an interesting environment.  Arbiter hails from Northern Michigan and just signed to Famined Records and are planning a release in the very near future.
