He came to Seattle's all-ages venue recently tickets were $14. Still kicking myself for missing it.

I love Iron & Wine and I went to see him/them on his/their 2008 Australian tour on the back of the Shepherd's Dog album and it wasn't that good. Before you go, try to find out if it's going to be folk Iron & Wine or jam band Iron & Wine.

(I got a great limited-edition poster at the merch desk, though).

Considering Abilene is a 5 to 6 hour drive away, probably not.

Before you go, try to find out if it's going to be folk Iron & Wine or jam band Iron & Wine.

I've seen them both ways, and they were both fantastic.  Maybe you hit an off-night for the band show.

The musicianship was fantastic, and he performed one song off the Creek Drank the Cradle (I can't remember which one) in the style of the Shepherd's Dog which was incredible, but there was also lots of jam-band noodling which frankly I always find tedious. I could admire it but emotionally it left me cold, which was a shame.

I went to see them on the Shepherd's Dog tour and they were pretty fantastic. They performed the whole of The Shepherd's Dog and several other tracks too (they played at least 1 1/2 hours not including 15 minute encore) and I think I got a mix of the two; jam-band and folk-band. They played almost every song as it was on record (with a live feel, of course) but I do remember that they stretched Wolves out to around 12 minutes while jamming for a while although I thought they were great at that.

The thing I remember most about it though was that before they played Boy With A Coin, Sam Beam was talking about how they had practiced the song earlier and he was the only one to get the final chord right yet he was the only one to get it wrong when they finished the song. It was a real connective moment between the band and the crowd which I thought signified the way they played that night, at least.

I think I've said this before but the problem I had with the Shepherd's Dog tour was that I found the rest of the band substantially weaker than Sam.  I couldn't help but feel that Sam alone or perhaps with a few accompanists would have been far superior to Sam + full band.

That being said, it was still a pretty decent show.
