The difference between Muse and Radiohead is that Muse are creative, talented individuals who make excellent music, and Radiohead are a bunch of has-been wankers trying to force originality.

Discuss.

I love the title "Hail To The Theif," because I am among the legions and ranks and what have you of decidedly "un-Patriotic" Americans. The title made me want it more than anything. So... daring? I don't know about that. Politically incorrect, commendably, but not daring. There are lots of liberal types here. Anyway on to the music part. None of the songs grabbed me on the first play, at all, I mean not even one melodic line or one iota of arrangement, so I deleted it with vigorous enthusiasm. I'll admit that I have never listened to it again, and so, I can't say that I've given it much of a chance to grow on me.

Kid A, as everyone knows, it THE Radiohead album. They never reached that level again, in my opinion. Amnesiac had moments... Pablo Honey has a few... but they never did another Kid A. I know this has been talked about and talked about by many many music geeks before me, so I won't say another thing about it.

Meanwhile, I'll take anything from Muse over Kid A. So that's where I'm at...

I was also a bit angry and Greenwood, Yorke, and co. because I had written a song in 2001, when I was 17, called "Hail to the Theif" and they made it so I would be hesitant to ever release it. Fuckers. </mock bitterness>

I'll put it on my to-do list to listen to the album again.

For what it's worth, I hated that album at first, but since then I'd easily take it over Pablo or Amnesiac. I also think that 'There, There' is one of their finest tracks. As an album it is a bit overlong though. There's some substantial filler there. I mean, 'I Will,' what the fuck is that?

Yeah, I agree. If Radiohead dropped the wannabe electronica stuff, or at least toned it down and toned the rock stuff back UP, they would be scores better

Well the word on the street is that's what the next album is moving towards.

I prefer Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, and Map of the Problematique. But I also love Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, and Time is Running Out from the Absolution album.

ditto.

i don't really see the connection between radiohead and muse, yet people say it almost every time they review muse. they don't sound that much alike, other than the leads have higher voices. mostly i think they compare the two just to irritate people.

Well, in the case of both bands, they lean towards the progressive edge of things. Muse moreso than Radiohead, though. You're right, they don't have much similarity besides that.

Porcupine Tree is better than both of them put together, anyway.

I might call Muse progressive in the sense that they draw a lot of inspiration from 70's prog bands. I might even call Radiohead equally progressive because they have never come out from a recording session without a signifigant alteration of styles, and enjoy experimentation, even if it almost always goes horribly wrong.

Of course, I would hesitate to call either band progressive in the real world, because it is a terrible fucking name for a genre.

It's all in how you definte "progressive" as a genre. If you really expect everything "progressive" to invent something new, you're absolutely right. It's just a word to me. A word that, in this context, means "complicated, layered, and intricate music."

muse and radiohead are not comparable imo. now i've only heard one muse album, Absolution, and while it had some decent parts to some songs, for the most part i found it fairly uninspired, fairly whiney (lyrically) just above generic rock. nothing overly special. not too horrible, mind you, but nothing memorable or particularly impressive. i've heard all of radiohead's full lengths and while pablo honey is junk, all the rest are fantastic. kid a is undeniably original and terrific, and a major departure from their earlier work. amnesiac has some wonderfully experimental stuff on it, the bends is one of the better more traditional sounding rock albums i've heard, ok computer is just plain brilliant throughout, and hail to the thief, although it does have some fluff like some one mentioned above, is still overall a truly excellent album as well. so, although muse and radiohead are something like apples and brussle sprouts when compared, i think for the sake of comparison i'll say muse doesn't hold a candle to radiohead. not even close.

I think older Muse did try and sound a bit like Radiohead... I thought that was pretty obvious, not as blatant as Coldplay (or quite as bad).  But I didn't care much for it.

However, I really do like the latest album, for a dumb rock record.  "Knights of Cydonia" to me as extremely enjoyable, and not even ironically.  It goes so far over the top that it comes out on the other side and it makes me smile.  And that was even before I saw the video.  I think that video, with that song playing, should win some kind of Short Film Award.

Coldplay trying to sound like Radiohead? What the fuck? Parachutes has barely any resemblance to any of Radiohead's material except maybe 'Fake Plastic Trees,' and then only because it has songs with both electric and acoustic guitars playing together. Rush Of Blood sounds very little like then, and X&Y just sounds like U2.

I'd take being vigorously sodomised by a eight foot tall Brazilian pre-op transexual called Jose over anything Radiohead have ever produced.

Although I would like to point out that I kinda like being sodomised so I guess that's not really saying anything.

Now see, I hate the phrase "over the top" in music. To me there is no top to be over. Dramatic vocal performances, epic music, frantic melodic lines interwoven betwixt layers of lush, jangly harmonies. Yeah those are good things. Crunchy yet complicated power chord riffs, rhythmically dense yet groovy, foot tapping drumming. Still good. I fail to see where anything could ever be over the top. Maybe you're not always in the mood for it, but so what? That doesn't diminish the value of the music.

As for you Khar, you dirty little filth monkey, bend over.
