Oh man, I just discovered Arch Enemy, and "Wages of Sin" is blowing my mind.

The chick doing the vocals could kill me with her mind.

You should totally check out Dark Tranquillity. Their lead singer is'nt as hot as Arch Enemy's, But they sure do kick some ass.

And yes, whenever I show a friend of mine (metal fan or not) an Arch Enemy video they're all like "WOHA! Is that a girl?! HOLY SHIT! And she's fucking hot too!"

I picked up Doomsday Machine last saturday and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Coming from someone who usually can't stomach death metal vocals, that's gotta mean something. Nemesis and Mechanic God Creation are sufficiently awesome for me to freak out over them.

Arch Enemy is a band from whom I haven't heard much.  Of course, after Otep, I'm always wary of growly vocals done by a chick.

There was a period of about three months when I was 15 when Ravenous was my favourite song of ever. Nowadays I'd say that my favourite from the Angela Gossow period is Leader of the Rats, though overall I think Arch Enemies best tracj is Angelclaw, which was done with their old vocalist Johan.

Arch Enemy is rather good! Growly vocals by girlz are always very fun if they are done well..but of course..they are fun when done by ANYBODY if done well, which is rare.

get Burning Bridges, much better album, much better singer. Plus the old singer had a peener. Angela Gossow kind of made the band go to stink :(

You talk like Gossow is the lead songwriter. If you dislike the direction Arch Enemy went after she joined, at least have the decency to blame Michael Amott.

Or blaming Blaze Blayley for the Iron Maiden albums without Dickinson. I think Steve Harris just started running out of ideas.

Arch Enemy is pretty good, but I prefer their earlier albums (Wages of Sin, Burning Bridges) to their later stuff. Anthems of Rebellion was good, but not as resonant with me, and Doomsday Machine just seemed repetitive.

If we're talking melodeath, Carcass. Seriously, Heartwork is amazing. I agree with Miseratur on Dark Tranquility too. And obviously Possessed and Death, but those are more straight-up death than melodic death. Still, absolutely essential.

And Angela Gossow is pretty fucking intimidating, I must say.

Eh, it doesn't matter (though Brave New World wasn't that bad, I haven't heard Dance of Death).  Just listen to their old albums, because any new albums would sound pretty much the same.  Not that I really have a problem with that.

Tbh, the only thing I found seriously wrong with Dance of Death was the album cover.

You can blame Blaze a bit for not being a particularly amazing lyricist, but I don't think Angela can take much flak. She writes about half the lyrics on the latest album I think? Maybe less. The change is pretty much all Michael Amott taking a heavy front lead over Chris Amott and changing his writing style. But hey, Arch Enemy is still, technically, a Carcass side-project, so he can do what he wants with it.

And guys. Good melodeath?

EDGE OF FUCKING SANITY.

Imo, Dance of Death had some really good cuts (title track, Paschendale, Wildest Dreams), some good ones (Montsegur, Rainmaker, Journeyman), and a bunch of mediocre ones (everything else). A step back from Brave New World, but a slight one, and the two newer albums are still way, way better than anything Maiden did since Seventh Son.

I consider Paschendale to be one of Maiden's absolute best songs, not to mention one of the first where they used the triple guitar attack to its full potential.

I didn't really like Journeyman. It kept making me feel like they were trying to make their own Nothing Else Matters/Unforgiven.

Paschendale is actually my favourite Iron Maiden track. I also quite enjoy Gates Of Tomorrow, for some reason.

Someone actually tried to convince me the Blaze era was actually better than the 'overrated classic maiden' because it had more solid songwriting. I wasn't buying it.

The Blaze Era certainly had its share of crap (Edge of Darkness, anyone?), but I genuinely consider it to be better than the last two albums before Bruce and Adrian left. Man on the Edge, kthanxbai.

And nothing's wrong with Dance of Death. Seriously, at least. Obviously it's not Piece of Mind, Number of the Beast or even Powerslave, but it's pretty solid.

But in terms of stuff for Jeph: What other bands should we recommend? I'm thinking maybe Atheist, especially since they might be recording new material. And Testament, but just because I <3 them like crazy.

Oh, and if you're looking for multilayered madness, Cynic's first and only album Focus is incredible.

METAL QUESTION:

i am currently seeking

A. metal bands that sing songs about Vikings (bonus points if they dress up like Vikings, too).
B. metal bands that have guitar solos that sound like Castlevania.
C. metal bands that do BOTH.

a friend of mine recently introduced me to Ensiferum and they are fucking rad as shit.

Atheist is kinda tough to listen to. Although, the first time I listened to Unquestionable Presence it blew me away. If youre into Technical Death Metal and Jazz, you'll love them.
Plus, the Relaps re-releses are awsome.

If you like Ensiferum you will probably like:

Turisas, Wuthering Heights, Moonsorrow, Turisas, Wintersun, Bal-Sagoth, Korpiklaani, Battlelore, Elvenking, Cruachan and the bands Misereatur mentioned.

Only Enslaved's old stuff is really Viking.

Amon Armath is a good Viking band, although their musical style is straight up melodeath.

Also Wintersun is great, definitely fits the solo requirement. Their songwriter left Ensiferum to concentrate on them.

As far as other bands in the folksy vein of Ensiferum, check out Otyg, Korpiklaani, early Vintersorg, and Thyrfing.

Also, I don't have any of their music, but Moonsorrow dresses like Vikings.
