Quick!
Everyone, think about the single most obscure* band you know!
Now tell us the first one that came to mind.

It doesn't count if the band was/is obscure because either they suck or they are a little local band that no one out of their hometown has heard of.

A good example: The Residents or Os Mutantes. The Velvet Underground would have been an ideal pick if I posted this in the sixties before they'd broken up and become famous.

Buh.. The Elastik Band
Edit: Because Mr. Spinless speaks truth.

The Elastik Band only ever put out one song, called "Spazz".
But it's a fucking great song, it's in the Nuggets boxset that collects the first wave of pyschedlic garage bands, and it was my reason for getting it. The whole thing is fantastic though.

GUYS! If you wanna make this thread worth something, describe the bands you're posting, tell people how you know them, where they're from.
Otherwise this is just crap.
Also, no offshoots from bands that are huge will ever be 'obscure'.

Austin TV are a post rock band from Mexico City. They are not that obcżscure really, easily being the mot famous post-rock ban in Mexico (yes, also the only one I know of). Their sound is close to Mogwai with use of samples a la GY!BE. They take to the stage wearing matching clothing and masks, the idea being that people will not focus on the members but on the music.  One of the outfits is matching black pinstriped suits with a red mask, another is white suits with a bunny mask.

Anyway. The band I said was Destroy All Robots from Ontario, Canada. They are a fun rock band with some ska influences. The singer writes really good, thought provoking lyrics. The end.

I'll go with Pelt, the drone/psych/folk group that's been very quietly releasing works of extreme weirdness for quite some time.  Jack Rose is in it.  It is, for the most part, nothing at all like his solo work.  Pelt's music is mostly acoustic drone and poor-recording-type noise.  I find it nearly unlistenable when I am in all but the most specific moods, during which it is spot-on perfect.

A clsoe second place goes to Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores, a 6-piece (drums, guitar, violin, upright bass, French horn, and accordion) band I saw play last winter.  The accordionist/lead singer played feedback solos and sometimes a jaw harp.  They were actually amazing.

Well there used to be this black metal band, called Exclamatory Defecation Syndrome. They played one gig and broke up afterwards, because they didn't want to give in to the mainstream. From what i heard, they never really practised before that one gig either.

Crazy norwegians..

Anyway, returning to Caravan: It's basically 70's style prog-rock, with a heavy influence from folk and jazz (mostly jazz though). Their two albums "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" and "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night" have my warmest, heartiest recommendation.

It just has such a sweet, uplifting hippie vibe. Whenever I'm in a REALLY lousy mood, I just stick one of their albums on and feel better. If the blissed-out vibe of the music itself doesn't do it for me, the silly lyrics will.

Plus, one of their early albums has the greatest title ever: "If I Could Do it All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You" :D

Having heard Deerhoof, I don't think they're an exception to this.

Referring back to my earlier nomination of Dantalian's Chariot: 1960's psychedelic rock band.  Given that they probably don't remember who they were, it's a fair bet that most of you lot won't either.

Do it, for gods sake, DO IT!!

"A Celebration Of Guilt" is pure fucking awrsomeness.

On paper, it should actually be totally lame:

It's melodic death metal, and the Shred-factor is completely off the scale, which could result in it ending up as a total wank-fest.

And the album doesn't have much in the way of variation at first glance, but after a few listens, the subtleties of the dynamics sink in. Still, at first listen it just sounds like 180 mph guitar-melting all the time..

But somehow, the end result is just... wow..

Sure, it is in some way a technical wankfest, but all the uber-technical riffs and complex overdubs tie in so well it's not even funny. And the biggest plus is: It's got SONGS!!

The songwriting is fucking phenomenal, and quite catchy with impeccable dynamics and flow. Everything kicks in at the perfect time. Every tempo change, blastbeat, mid-tempo breakdown, melodic harmony riff of extreme awesomeness +2 and every bitchin' solo is placed perfectly and hammered in with undeniable authority.

But don't just take my word for it, check it out for yourself:

http://www.worshipdepraved.com/sounds.cfm

"The Face Of My Innocence".. That song sums up their sound pretty well, and it just kicks off that album so perfectly.

They kinda failed right there didn't they? I haven't heard them and I'm already more interested in what they look like. I'd ingore the music and just stare at the costumes...like that Gram Rabbit band, nobody actually knows what they sound like because they're too busy stairing at the dancing bunny.

Yes indeed. I saw them live without having listened to anything by them before and all I was thinking throughout the first sng was "Those bunnny suits are nice, I wonder how they look without the mask". I was actually corrected on this a few minutes ago, they do it so that the audience doesn't focus on any of them individually, but as a band.
