Now you see, this is why Myspace is evil. Myspace is DIRECTLY responsible for artists like Hollywood Undead and Jeffree Star actually selling records.

Small Tribe

Long defunked alternative/indie band from LA. I have never found any of their stuff ever besides a couple songs on a compilation that has some Sugarplastic songs.

Speaking of which.

The Sugarplastic.

Doesn't count if I told you about them.

Two Gallants (will probably become less obscure)

Ghost Mice
Operation: Cliff Clavin
Ted Dancin' Machine
The Devil is Electric
Michael Jordan's Touchdown Pass

None of those will be obscure if you've heard of Plan-it-X Records though.

Petty Cash, The Dharma Bums, and The Unlikely Heroes: all used-to-be-local bands that recently got bigger... as in touring UK.
Petty Cash is bluesy rock with a very bitter throaty singer... lots of songs about prostitutes and cheating girlfriends.
The Dharma Bums call themselves "funk, punk, and rock n roll" but they're actually sometimes a bit synthy... in a good way. Songs like "Beer" make me happy.
The Unlikely Heroes are an Oasish sort of electro-funk stomp-rock. They do some really good floor shakers, like one called Midsummer Storm.

Also, the Duckworths.
Dirty european jazz, latina rhythms, with added guitar rock. I suggest "Ahab's Blues". They come back from Italy to the UK soon.

no idea if any of these bands are actually obscure, but they're the most obscure bands I listen to (since local bands apparently don't count)

James Chance & The Contortions (old new wave/punk band)
The Back Horn (J-Rock band)
Blue States (only heard one song of theirs)
Boards of Canada (ambient type stuff, they do the music for the David Firth toons)
Chunk (rock group, came across their webpage somehow and downloaded a song, was pretty good)
Kiroro (J-pop duo)

again, no idea if they're actually obscure or not, but I never hear anything about them, so...*shrug*

Would you say The Books were obscure enough...?

Mixture of instrumental and electronic samples, overlayed with vocal samples/spoken-word/ambient noise. In theory it should be a mess but it somehow works really well. They seem very fun as well.

I've been listening to Gothminister for about two years now, but I think they're still pretty obscure.

Probably because, in all fairness to 'em, they're not that good. Their best song is probably Icon of Coils remix of 'Devil'. That is pretty banging.

Hell, no.  They fit my definition of "not obscure", which is "I own one or more of their albums".  (Note that this definition doesn't apply to everyone, only to me - you lot can own albums without something not being obscure any more.)

Yeah, I remember you recommend them a while back.  They have brought me and a friend much joy and happiness.

There's a big movement in Italy and Germany of Emo-violence.  Really really good hardcore.  React With Protest artists Louise Cyphre, Raein, June Paik, La Quiete, and this other band Kaospilot are really good at what they do.

White Mice are awesome. They're signed to Load, so that's already a sign of quality.

The Plan. Obscure math-meets-hardcore-meets-jazz-meets-indie band from Halifax (Nova Scotia), released two albums. Defunct now. Featured members of North of America.
The Holy Shroud. Another math/indie band from Halifax, also featuring North of America members.
Halifax is pretty good source for good but obscure bands, I guess.

Also, Yacopsae. Power violence from Germany I was recently introduced to. Pretty good band.

And good bands from California? Jesus, man, think 90s San Diego scene. Drive Like Jehu, Heroin, Mohinder, Clikitat Ikatowi. Also The Locust, The Flying Luttenbachers, Burmese...

I'd hardly call Gorgoroth obscure, 'A Sorcery Written in Blood' and 'Pentagram' are basically essential early 90's BM releases.

Misantropical Painforest is a band I'd hugely reccomend, aside from having an awesome name, this is some of the most wonderful and unique music I have ever heard. If you're even slightly curious about extreme metal I'd look into this band, you won't be dissapointed. There are some samples available from their labels site http://www.alphadraconisrecords.org/samples.html if you're interested in checking them out. I'd go as far as to say "Winds Saturate with Inhumane Longing" was the best metal release of 2005.

Other sweet and some what obscure bands are Alchemist, Divine Eve and Myrddraal.

obscure:

'Hanadensha' maybe? proggy, psychadelic band with seichii yamamoto. I think there's a fan-made myspace with some tunes on it.

I listened to some stuff by an 8-bit band called Yupster or something awhile ago. not too interesting really, but I've never heard of them since.

Z-rock hawaii, not-so-obscure but oft-overlooked by ween fans.

is Shpongle obscure? slow eastern sounding electronica.
