I know this pretty much makes all my opinions invalid (not that it matters; I like Metal Machine Music and Journey) but I really love the Dresden Dolls. Srsly.

Husker Du - Statues

Going through all the Husker's discography, currently working my way through Everything Falls Apart, already listened to Land Speed Record. Zen Arcade next. Fuck yesss

Nevarakka - Magical Moment

Gay trance is awesome. This is so cheesy that I'd be quite embarrassed if anyone walked in and caught me listening to it :)

I don't usually go for that oldie punk style, or whatever genre you'd call it, but Hüsker Dü just plain rock. Zen Arcade is a timeless classic.

New Day Rising is actually my favorite album.

and I think the general term is "hardcore punk", but I don't even bother with really in specific genres anymore.

Bad Wizard - Wizard of Shackles

OK, so apparently "Bad Wizard" is so named because it's what "Budweiser" sounds like when you're hammered AND blazed out of your head.  But then they made a SONG with the word "Wizard" in the title, and it's pretty much the exact opposite of every other song on this album ("#1 Tonight!").  The others are all short (3:09 tops), fast, hard-rockin' bar anthems with names like "Turn It Up (Turn Me On)" and "Six to Mid-Nite Man" but then the album closes out with this long (7:18), heavy, swirly, repetitive instrumental behemoth that sounds more like Queens of the Stone Age on too much opium.  It's like going through an entire album sitting in the back of a beat-up red pickup throwing back cases of PBR, and then getting abducted by aliens at the end.

Figurines - "Race You"

Probably one of the best songs I've heard ever. Too bad the band had to ruin the mood so much with "The Wonder". I guess the song is good, but it's such a drastic change from the beautiful and haunting opener.

Emperor - Curse all you Men

Black metal and bad production are often associated, so is it ironic or not that Emperor's productions actually tend to be pretty clear and everything? I mean, sure, they're one of BM's biggest names, if not THE biggest, so it would make sense that they could afford it, but what unspoken tenets are they breaking? Anywway, with all of the random air-raid siren yells thrown in here, I guess this is what you would call "Black Power Metal". I have a dream of creating my own Black Power Metal band one day, and we will be called X-Malcom.

That's funny, I have always thought their strength was the rapid bouncy songs like Debate Because It's Over, Bright, All Night etc.
Still they are one of the best goddamn indierock bands in Denmark and seeing them live is a lot of fun :)

Rin' - 飛鳥 - 02 - 美貌の国

It's a Japanese trio I recently discovered when browsing my local music store's international music section.  They mix traditional Japanese instrumentation with electronica... a mixture of trance/club (I can never tell the difference between those two,) downtempo, and right now (03 - The Clash) it's a cool little jazz piece.

I'd reccomend this to anyone who likes electronica, but the album is a tad expensive to buy new... 2950円 on the back... about $27 IIRC plus shipping.  I bought mine for $15 used, and suprisingly, it's on iTunes US for $9.99.

--Nick

Edit... oops, for those who can't read Japanese, that track is:
Rin' - Asuka - 02 - Bibou no Kuni

Both this and the Walkmen version are great. I think I prefer the latter, though. I like the classic weary feeling to it. This one's a bit bouncier. It's interesting to hear both sides of the song.

Bayon - Bayon (1977) - "Deu Da Ling".

Two East Germans and two Cambodians playing together on a great little folkish/world/baroquish album. Hand drumming, ethnic chants and flutes with a bit of bass and electric guitar thrown in for good measure.

Right now I am listening to 'The 15th' by Wire, and the synthy, jangly pop goodness is just so perfect and so different from their earlier angular, punkish stuff (which was also amazing), and I'm sitting here wondering if Wire were perhaps the best band ever.

Maybe they were.

Yasushi Ishii FTW. I havnt been able to find anything of his outside of the Hellsing OST.

I Found A Reason - Cat Power

When I heard this song in V for Vendetta I immediatly perked up and had to do a double take. It was a nice surprise. Chan Marshall has such an amazingly hypnotic/soothing voice.

Right now In My Life is tied with You've Got To Hide Your Love Away for my favourite Beatles song.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra and Tra-la-la band - Horses in The Sky

This is odd, because the vocals are nicely done and Efrim doesn't sing like a dying donkey anymore. The music is nice too, and it's only 6 and a half minutes long, if they keep following this direction they might stop being simply GY!BE's weak cousin. The new name for the band is fucking ridiculous though.

I've been listening to Sufjan Stevens Illinois for the past few days fairly regularly. When I first heard this album I sort of listened then put it away for a month or so... I went on a road trip to see Spinto Band (go check them out by the way) and my friend was playing some of Sufjans live recordings.. since then I've been a bit obsessive about this album. Hmmm. Also I was listening to D O A earlier...

Tomahawk - Flashback

My godamned speakers are starting to splurt out noises and pops every few seconds when they're being used. So I cant enjoy Tomahawk like I should.
I had this problam before, and i fixed it by just puting the speakers on a shelf far from my monitor (an old big CTX 17 inch monitor). Now I cant listen to music with out hearing loud pops. Gonna have to try fixing it soon.

When I first listened to it I was quite impressed by Devils Steed, but the more  I listen to it, the more I think it may be their best album ever. It's certainly the best album of 2005. I suppose it is, basically, a fusion of two of my favourite Sol Invictus albums (I see it as Death of the West meets In A Garden Green) with both the folky rawness, and the ethereal intensity.

And because I had to listen to it talking about it.

Sol Invictus - There Did Three Knights Come From the West

There I would sit and bleed a while..."

The Devil Steed is my second favorite Sol Invictus album, right after The Hill Of Crosses.
THOC is one of those albums that just grabs you after the first 30 seconds of Chime The Day. Brilliant.

Thom Yorke - Cymbal Rush

After a few listens, I have to say that I really like this album. Totally going to pick it up the minute its out.
Still looking forward to the new Radiohead album though.
