Ragnarok?
« on: 25 Jul 2006, 21:39 »

So, I just started playing RO today. Well, psiBLADE RO. Free server. Friend is a mod, or whatever they call them, there. Huge download, took two hours, but oh my goodness. It was worth it. I haven't had this much fun with a video game since the first time I played Diablo 2.

I currently have a level 33 (job level 24 or 25.. I think) archer. The going was a little tough at the beginning, as I'd never played it before, but I think I've caught on.

There's just one thing that picks at me, though: It seems to be difficult to find people to party up with. In the towns there are people all congregated in one place, not moving, not talking. I'm assuming they're in private chat rooms or are whispering, or whatever. In anycase, does anyone here play it? Or is interested in investing the time to download the client and join me?

I play RO on a free server as well, and that's one of the more...interesting aspects of the game, whether you're on an official server or not.....grouping isn't something really done when you don't have friends.

I mean, my family plays, so I group with them, and sometimes, one of us will find a friend, join a guild, and then we make friends, and we wind up with quite the crew, but honestly...

Grouping isn't something that's done like in games like EverQuest or World of WarCraft. It's not a necessity, so most people aren't shouting "LOOKING FOR GROUP!!!" every five minutes.

Generally, partying up is only really necessary for things like War of Emperium or killing MVP's.

And of course, yeah, a lot of people sit around in Prontera whispering back and forth. I know people who made Merchant class characters for that sole purpose so that when they just felt like sitting around, they'd at least be doing something functional, lol.

And by the way--Nice choice with Archer. My first character, ever, was an Archer, and I have a very serious soft spot for them. They're great (^-^)

Yea - I think every single game like this that I've even played, my first has been an archer. A soft spot back to my days of diablo one. :)

I've played Ragnarok Online since it's beta days, and am proud to say that I have moved on to better games :x. The official server (iRO) has gone to the PITS. With the rise of so many free private servers (and in many cases, BETTER run servers), the numbers of players have dwindled down significantly to about 1,000 regulars (and 3/4 are bots).

Beware, kibBen, if you see non-talking characters who are killstealing you etc etc and warping away, they're probably bots and you should tell your mod friend to ban 'em. Bots are one of the reasons I quit iRO :), including incompetent GM's etc etc.

Anyway... I'm returning to old games, too. I'm thinking of starting up Everquest again, since I saw it on sale for $20. :)

PS: Have fun playing archer! Archer was my first character, too. She only made it to level 15 ;) before I switched servers.

OK, somebody said the magic word! (Everquest)

I will tell you what I tell everyone who is even remotely interested in playing Everquest: please don't.  You're only encouraging them to make more mediocre, shitty games.  Have you tried Guild Wars?  Not your style?  If you really have to pay monthly for a game then how about WoW?

I am tending to steer clear of MMOs in general nowdays in favour of multi-player RPGs like Titan Quest, and get my interaction fix on the forums/irc/etc where if someone is an asshole to me I can ignore them & they won't try to PK or killsteal from me.

How is Titan Quest, est? I remember hearing about it briefly, but don't really know much about it.

http://est-xplosif.livejournal.com/73836.html

But the summary is that it is really really good.  You pick two seperate skill trees out of eight to create your own class, or specialise in just one tree for a purist class, so there is a shitload of choice in there depending on how you want to play.  The graphics are gorgeous and the sound is pretty good also.

The only thing I am complaining about at the moment is that too much loot/gold drops.  There is seriously too much stuff dropping for me to pick it all up.  I hope that a future patch addresses the amount and quality of gear dropping, because it is kind of ludicrous.

If I ever get a decent PC, I'll make sure to check it out.

But... 85 dollars? Really?

EDIT: A quick perusal of Amazon.com shows new copies going for 45 dollars. Is it one of those Australia-isn't-a-major-market-so-we-can-charge-you-guys-out-the-ass deals?

The general trend for stuff like games in Australia is to just double the amount of us dollars :(

I hear Britain has a similar sort of thing going, except it's charge the same number, but in pounds.

Your results may vary.

o-KAY est sorry I menioned everquest :). I was just thinking of playing again because 3 of my mates already started up and were trying to convince me to "joiiiinnn them." Plus, they offered to pay for my game D:.

TITAN QUEST SOUNDS KEWL (harhar), I didn't know the same people created Age of Empires :) (that was a fun game way back when). I'm thinking of trying it out, but only if you'll do multi-player with meeeeee EST EST EST!

It looks better than that upcoming game Gods and Heroes :), except less graphic intensive.

PS: thanks, but no thanks for the WoW offer, I bought the game full-priced when it first came out, tried it for a month, and quickly lost interest. poops.

I can't play multiplayer at the moment, I haven't bought it yet.  Will probably buy it at some point next week.

But one I do I will definitely be up for some multiplayer with QC peoples.  Multiplayer seems like it would be insane fun in this game.  A lot of your skills affect team-mates in a radius around you, so for example a pyromancer has an enchantment that adds fire damage to his attacks & to the attacks of team-mates in a given radius around him.  The defense/shield specialist has an enchantment that boosts the defensive capabilities of team-mates, etc.

Same thing for me with WoW, btw.  Bought it a while back, played it for a while, got sick of it.
