I decided this would be better suited as a discussion thread. Top ten lists are still welcome but we can also discuss any albums released this year.

Camera Obscura is really growing on me. It might crack my top 10 soon.

Haven't bought or listened to many 2006 albums; however, the three I've heard and liked are:
-The Eagles of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
-Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
-Danko Jones - Sleep Is The Enemy

I'm also looking forward to the new mc chris album, which is supposed to drop in the next couple of weeks.

Islands is solid but it doesn't really stick out in my mind when I think of albums from this year. It's simply decent.

As far as be your own PET is concerned I think that is a wonderful album. Musically it is genius, my only real problem with it is some of Jemina's lyrics... otherwise a great album.

I actually love the lyrics. She isn't old enough yet to write about anything especially deep or introspective (and witness the disaster of other 18-year-olds who have tried) so she sings about bicycles and going on adventures. Its fucking perfect.

This thread is reminding me of all the albums I planned on getting when I initially heard about them.

Going back to the band I mentioned in my first post, Oneida... everyone should go seek out an mp3 of "Up With the People" off their new album. Maybe the best song I've heard this year.

I haven't really bought much this year:

1. Summoning - Oath Bound
2. Ihsahn - The Advesary
3. Drudkh - Blood in our Wells
4. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II
5. Samael - Era One/Lessons in Magic

Summoning, stands heads and shoulders above the rest so far, their best album since Stronghold imo.

Also looking forward to new Maiden and Mars Volta.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say Gnarls Barkley.

I was surprised by that as well.

I don't usually run out and get albums as soon as they're released so I haven't heard a whole lot from 2006, but here's what I got:

1. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
2. The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
3. Islands - Return to the Sea
4. Thom Yorke - The Eraser

Jury's still out on Matt Friedberger's Winter Women/Holy Ghost Language School and I just downloaded Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

My best-o-06 looks like this so far, unordered.

Shout Out Out Out Out - Not Saying/Just Saying
Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Etiquette
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
Islands - Return To The Sea
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
Neil Young - Living With War
Ladyhawk - s/t
The Sadies - In Concert
Thom Yorke - The Eraser

I would like to recommend some Rhymefest and maybe Kanye West's Late Orchestration. Unfortunately I haven't heard enough of either. So I guess if anyone has, let me know how it was?

I can't make a definitive list yet, as there are a couple releases that I haven't listened yet (because they're not out yet), but on the list would be:

The Flying Luttenbachers - Cataclysm because it's The Flying Luttenbachers
Daughters - Hell Songs because apparently this album sounds a bit like Arab on Radar and that can't be bad thing
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Minus the Bear - Menos el Oso

And I'm really looking forward to the new Blood Brothers and Aereogramme albums.

That's all I can think of, really.

Yeah, I've read about that and I've already listened to Fiery. I can imagine that most kids, who expect another The Locust knockoff are really pissed off because from what I've read and heard, this is very weird stuff. Now if my mailorder had the decency to ship that freaking CD so I can listen to it...

Edit: And while it's only technically a 2006 release, I'm really happy about Botch's Unifying Themes Redux.

So far I can rate the following:

- Asobi Seksu - Citrus
- Forward, Russia - Give me a wall
- Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds
- Red Sparowes - long title woohaa.
- Volcano! - Beautiful Seizure
- Woven Hand - Mosaic
- Island - Return to the Sea

2006 has been a good year so far. I'm also hoping whatever Smashing Pumpkins are recording won't be shit. A long shot, sure, but I have hope.

I think they just deliver a very good package. Great, great, great music (inventive, never dull or average), good live performances (I've seen a couple of shows and was impressed), good artwork (saying little, I know, but it's imagery that works for me) and they don't take themselves overly serious. They have a sense of humour about things and I like that.

I bought "A Matter of Life and Death" on the weekend and it's damn excellent, Iron Maiden have done it again. Interesting lyrics as well, most of the songs are about war, religon and death, reminds me a lot of "Somewhere in Time" the way it has the same theme running through the lyrics and Artwork.

Best songs are "Out of the Shadows", "Lord of Light", "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" and "The Legacy"

It's a lot heavier then Dance of Death and I'd even say it's more prog as well. The three guitars are utilized extremely well. It's a tough call but I'd but this at no 1 for the year at the moment.

New Darren Hanlon album due out here at the beginning of October.  I've already heard him play some of the songs live, and they're pretty good.  Definitely the album I'm most keen to hear this year.

Also, Okkervil River fans: they've put out a fantastic E.P. to coincide with their Australian tour.  If you can find it, get it.

They played that as the final song of the gig I went to on Monday.  Just as rockin'.  Two-song encore: an acoustic, solo rendition of "Stone", and then the rest of the band walked on and ripped into "Westfall".  Awesome gig.

Devin Townsends Synchestra was 2006 wasn't it? I have really been enjoying this album so far, his solo stuff started as as somewhat disturbing and chaotic shit-noise and has pretty much evolved into some pretty poignant, and arse-kicking stuff in my opinion.

And then you have Vampolka, which is just a pretty snazzy little track, I like the way theres always little ridiculous, almost jazzy kind of tracks somewhere on his later stuff, in amongst the rest of his stuff.

Okay, I've gotten some new stuff. So. Albums from 2006 I have enjoyed:

TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Knife - Silent Shout
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Persuit (the only B&S I've listened to. It is pretty neat, I think).
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Fear Is On Our Side
Peaches - Impeach my Bush
Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
Jurassic 5 - Feedback
DeVotchKa - Curse Your Little Heart
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Cursive - Happy Hollow
Boris - Pink
The Church - Uninvited Like the Clouds

Still have not heard new Thermals, Sonic Youth, Queensryche, Neil Young, or Dylan. And the Melvins are coming out with something pretty soon, as well as the Residents. It is turning out to be a pretty good year.

TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Cursive - Happy Hollow
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

Judging by what i've heard so far the new Yo La Tengo album, "I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass" should be pretty sweet too.

3. Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia. (Woah, who didn't buy that?)
4. Ben Fold's Five - Rockin' the Suburbs
5. Team America soundtrack
6. The Hush Sound - Like Vines
7. Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This To Memory

Those are the only ones I can really remember buying, actually.

Heh, Ben Folds is pretty funny.

Anyway... I'm surprised that no one's mentioned "Stadium Arcadium", the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album.  I for one was rather impressed.  It's one of their more solid albums, if you ask me, and I rather like the band.

The new Pearl Jam album was alright.  The first couple tracks I liked (Life Wasted is cool) although it tapers off about halfway through the album.

Most recent purchase for me was the new Audioslave album "Revelations", seeing as it was just released last week.  It's very different sounding than anything else the band's put out so far, so I'm still undecided on how much I like it or not.  I do know that I don't regret the purchase at all because it is a good album.  Just... different from what I was expecting and the more I listen to it, the more I find myself liking it.

Also, I feel my own band's four releases so far this year - Death Throes, Riding On A Unicycle (With No Wheels And No Seat), The Filler EP and Neon Armageddon should all be on this list. Because we're awesome.

With any luck we can squeeze out a couple more albums - counting the Best Of - before the end of the year.
