Sirenia's At Sixes And Sevens is a masterpiece.
Don't bother with their other album, though.

I second the Therion and Chalice reccomendations.

For Therion I'd reccomend "Vovin", just for Martina Hornbacher's voice, it's amazing.

Chalice are a pretty good band as well, I've seen them live a bunch of times, never fail to put on a great show, traditionalish doom, with a nice violin and  flute and decent female vocals. Kind of sounds like early My Dying Bride with a female singer. I reccomend "Chronicles of Dysphoria".

Paradise Lost are another band you should definately check out.  Their album "Gothic" is really good though their middle albums "Draconian Times" and " One Seccond" are probably more what you're after.

If you wanna go from the more melo dm side rather then the Doom side, some of the later stuff from Sentenced is pretty decent I'd reccomend checking out "The Cold White Light"

Also just cause I feel obligated to chuck it in, Celtic Frost's "Into the Pandemonium" is pretty decent as well, kind of thrash meets Avante Garde meets Gothic rock. A lot of people bag this record but I think its pretty decent.

Yes, you should definately give Within Temptation a try. Their older work, anyway. They start so sound progressively more like Evanescence over their career.

For Therion I'd reccomend "Vovin", just for Martina Hornbacher's voice, it's amazing.

The problem with Vovin is that, since it represents a sort of failed experiment for Therion, is that it doesn't really sound like any other of their releases, and its probably their weakest modern-era album. I'd get:

Theli
Lemuria
Secrets of the Runes
Deggial
Sirius B
A'Arab Zaraq Lucid Dreaming
Vovin

In that order for gothic/symphonic stuff.

Some other good recs generally, but I've noticed most people aren't really cleaving to his original post, which expressed an interest in 'beauty/beast vocal duality'. Most of mine have something along those lines, though there is a lot of great gothic metal (especially gothic doom) that doesn't have that.

Yeah, but as I was saying, Celtic Frost is avant-garde thrash, MDB are doom-death, and Bathory are viking.

I'm pretty sure he wants something that sounds like this.

ah i tend not to subscribe to the genre system unless ozzy tells me its legit,i was just trying to pick out some stuff based on what he said he enjoyed now.

i definitly stick with MDB being goth to some extent,i mean shit the name alone is probably the most goth thing ive ever heard.

Oh, MDB are so goth they shit bats, but they're still a doom-death band.

Besides which, if he really knows where to go with doom, he doesn't need to be recommended MDB or Paradise Lost.

True story guys, MDB shits bats. DOOM BATS.

Also, JSS, please dont quote the post above yours, especially if it's a picture.

edit: that guy on the far left (I keep forgetting his name) looks like he's going to raid a drug cartel with a SWAT team. I allways chuckle at that whenever I see that picture.

I wish I could shit doom bats like My Dying Bride.  :| The new MDB record, "A Line Of Deathless Kings" is great btw.

Some other gothic metal records that I would suggest are:

Entwine - "Time Of Despair"
Katatonia - "Discouraged Ones" & "Last Fair Deal Gone Down"
Green Carnation - "Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness"
Sentenced - "Amok" & "Down"
Klimt 1918 - "Undressed Memento"
Paradise Lost - "One Second" & "Host"
Fields Of The Nephilim - "Zoon" & "Mourning Sun"

That MDB pic made my night. haha

I'm sure there are cool straight jackets. Those ones that M?tley Cr?e wore for the "Dr. Feelgood" promo photo sessions are pretty neat.

I would probably recommend the following since these are some of my faves at the moment:

Absu - "Tara"
Abigor - (pretty much anything in their discography)
Anael - "On Wings Of Mercury"
Black Witchery - "Desecration Of The Holy Kingdom" & "Upheaval Of Satanic Might"
Blacklodge - "Solarkult" (This record is very industrial-tinged though...but very good)
Carpathian Forest - "Black Shining Leather"
Darkspace - "Darkspace I" and "Darkspace II"
Darkthrone - (their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th releases as well as "Panzerfaust")
Drudkh - (anything and everything this band has released is brilliant.)
Enslaved - (see above)
Frostmoon Eclipse - "Death Is Coming" (Few BM bands implement acoustic guitars as well as these guys....)
Gjallarhorn - "Nordheim"
Hellveto - "Medieval Scream"
Isvind - "Dark Water Stir"
Jotunspor - "Gliepnirs Smeder"
Kriegsmaschine - "Altered States Of Divinity"
Lja - "Til Avsky For Livet"
Morrigan - (everything they've released)
Mysticum - "The Lost Masters Of the Universe"
Negura Bunget - (everything they've released)
Paragon Impure - To Gaius (For Delivery Of Agrippina)
Primordial - (Immediately get everything this band has released.)
Satyricon - "Now, Diabolical"
Thunderbolt - "The Burning Dead Of Deciet"
Tsjuder - "Desert Northern Hell"
Veles - "The Black Ravens Flew Again"
Velonnic Sin - "Ritual"
Vorkreist - "Sabbathical Flesh Possession"
Wolves In The Throne Room - "Diadem Of 12 Stars"
Wyrd - "Vargtimmen 1" & "Vargtimmen 2"

Enjoy. :)

gothic metal

Paradise Lost - "One Second" & "Host"

What? Those are not doom albums, especially not by PL. Also, as a fan, I try to forget the fact that PL actually realesed Host.

Also MDB are goth fashion kings.

I never said that they were doom, but they are very much within the 'gothic' realm of heavy metal. I personally loved "Host" as well, but then again I'm also a big Depeche Mode fan. :) I think that "Host", while a massive departure from their prior sound obviously (but you could see it coming on "One Second") is one of their best records they ever released and certainly their most daring. I wish they had stayed on that route actually since their current output is so predictable.

Oh well.  :-D And if MDB are goth fashion kings or queens they are doing a fine job of releasing interesting music in the meantime. ;)

I was trying to make an ...And Oceans related joke, implying that a Coma and resulting World Amnesia was the reason why we had forgotten to recommend them.

I have lost my last metal credit.

Also, Felix, Satyricon's Nemesis Divina would fit better on that list.

I suppose I'm totally different. I find "Icon" and "Draconian Times" much more doom, (since PL's early material basically  is doom, up through "Symbol Of Life", "Icon", and then they started to go more commercial with "Draconian Times" but still remaining firmly 'doomish'...) and although their are gothic nuances throughout those records, those nuances aren't nearly as pronounced as those found on their later releases when the vocals became even less distorted, the music became more fluid, less heavy, and they began to play around electronic sounds.

After Gothic and Shades of God came out, critics famed PL for "inventing goth metal", although that is some what true they're only one of the bands that started the goth metal wave. All of PL's albums are straight up doom, except for their electronica expiriments, which can be described as "goth" in texture and sound, but I find them just electronica expiriments, nothing more. Especially not goth albums. They got back to their doom roots with SOL and Paradise Lost, their last album (which is actually pretty good).

I wouldn't classify them purely as 'goth' records either (obviously they sound nothing like Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy, or Joy Division..hehe) but surely I would say that in Paradise Lost's case, "One Second", "Host", "Believe In Nothing", "Symbol Of Life", and even thier new record are much more 'gothic' tinged and have much more in common with 'gothic metal' than their earlier "doom" releases. I don't think they've gone back to their roots at all with their last two records either since to me, their roots lie in the ironically titled "Gothic" and "Paradise Lost" records and neither of their last two releases sound even remotely like tha, and I don't think they have recorded a 'doom' record since "Icon" at the very least.

Regardless, I think if one is looking to get into 'gothic metal', "One Second" and "Host" are good suggestions, especially if they are new to the sub-genre. I'd also recommend "Draconian Times" as well since it is, in many ways, the bridge record between their prior doom roots and their new more mainstream sounding gothic/dark metal sound they have today.

If you're into gothic vocals, Mushroomhead would probably be up there.
Same with Nightwish... and The 69 Eyes.  (Possibly, either that or I just really like their name.)
Erm.. and having a mind blank at the moment, but you've got yourself many suggestions already posted.  :-P

honestly i base "gothic" more on vocals/lyrics/vibe and overall aesthetic than an actual musical sound, which is why i find alot of "doom" or "sludge" bands pretty damned goth.

I'm not the hugest doom fan but I'm looking to get into it a bit more. So reccomend me some stuff. I don't care what sub genre it is wether its death/doom funeral doom or stoner or whatever.

My favorite doom albums look something like this:

Candlemass-  Nightfall
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Anathema - Crestfallen
Paramaecium - Exhumed of the Earth
Electric Wizard - We Live
Paradise Lost - Gothic
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead
Witchfinder General - Friends of Hell

I don't know if the last two strictly count but they are damn fine albums anyway.

Thanks

all albums of:

Mourning Beloveth
Shape of Despair
Thergothon
JESU

and everything with steven o'malley

I second the Steven O'Malley thing, especially "Crippled Lucifer" by the legendary Burning Witch. Those other bands kick ass as well. :)

All of the above and (some more fringey gothic and stoner stuff here perhaps):

The 3rd and the Mortal - Tears Laid In Earth
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Bitterdusk - Spirits
Cemetary of Scream - Melancholy
Doomvs - Aeternum Vale
The Eternal - The Sombre Light Of Isolation
All of Forever Autumns demos ('Forever Autumn', 'I Bury My Face in My Hands', 'Archaic')
Lapsus Dei - Beyond the Truth
Orange Goblin - The Big Black and Frequencies From Planet Ten (Pretty rock'n'rolling stuff, really, but should be right up the alley of a Cathedral fan, and of anyone who likes Black Sabbath, which should be fucking everybody, in my book)

A lot of these aren't 'classics' or even really that notable per se (except the Acid Bath and Amorphis albums, which are a required component of any self-respecting metalheads collections), but Felix's list is pretty fucking comprehensive.

I'll also make a slightly more controversial move and suggest 'Bloody Kisses' and 'October Rust' by Type O Negative. Yes, they are more 'goth metal' (one of the few bands I can think of that should actually be called that sans an 'ic') than doom, and they are campy as all hell, but there's some noticeable doom metal sensibilities and some good atmosphere in those albums. They also work quite well as a send-up of gothic/doom misery. Who can forget the immortal chorus of 'Black #1':

"Yeah you wanna go out, 'cos it's raining and blowing,
But you can't go out 'cos your roots are showing...
Dye 'em BLACK!
Dye 'em BLACK!
BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK NUMBER ONE
SHE DYES 'EM BLACK BLACK BLACK NUMBER ONE, OH YEAH!"

Also, anyone interested in being fucking depressed and fucking heavy at the same time should probably check out some depressive black metal. Abyssic Hate, Xasthur and Nortt spring to mind as the 'big names' as it were.

And of course Burzum, but I sincerely hope you already listen to Burzum.

Cemetary of Scream - Melancholy

I love this record. I often wondered if anyone at all listened to this band.

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

November's Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
Anathema - The Silent Enigma

And pretty much everything mentioned in this thread

Also, Boris and Sleep are a lot more stoner then doom.

Yeah Abyssic Hate kick arse, he's stuff is damn hard to track down (In Australia anyway). I've been trying to find the "United by Heathen Blood" split for a while.

I've got a couple of Nortt songs on mp3 I downloaded late last year, not bad what I've heard (Gudsforladt album) was really good.

I actually used to own a Type O Negative album (Can't remeber which one but it had "Everyone I love is Dead on it". Left it in a friends car a few years ago and never saw it again :(.

Thanks for all the doom suggestions, keep them comming I'm planning to go on a mass mail order spree once my bank balance gets a bit more respectable.
