Like a Book Club, but with Records.
« on: 28 Jan 2007, 11:47 »

I had this idea. We could get a group of people who all really liked music, and do an album club.

The way I picture it, one person could upload a record, and everyone else could download it, listen to it, and then discuss it in the thread. After about a week, the next person could upload one, and repeat. I think it would be a really fun way to get people to listen to music they may not have otherwise, as well as stimulate discussion which is always fun!

If we were going to do this, I would want the rules to be something like as follows.

First, and most importantly, if you don't like something, hell, even if you despise something, feel free to say it, just, you know, say it nicely. There is a big difference between "This album was fucking terrible" and "Wow I really couldn't stomach this. I really really despised every single track." The difference between stating your opinion obectively and just stating your opinion is huge. I acknowledge this is hypocritical coming from me.

Second, Don't pick an album everyone has heard already. We all like the Arcade Fire, but Funeral would not be the most exciting album to discuss. This will be a lot more fun if people are being exposed to things they haven't heard before.

Third, Please Listen to the Whole album. It's not fair to just listen to one track and act like you gave the band a fair shake. I almost want to say that if you can't actually talk about an album, you lose your turn to upload, but that seems a little harsh.

That is pretty much it! I feel like the order could just be the order in which people join the club? The only thing I am unsure of is how the albums should be picked, whether it would be better to make a poll between three albums that everyone could vote on, or whether it should just be the persons choice.

Post here if you would be interested, I guess? I will take new people in until... lets say Tuesday night at 8:PM, Pacific Time, or when we get 20 people, whichever comes first. If there's enough spill over, it might not be a bad idea to do two groups instead of one, so everyone can participate without making it so not everyone gets a turn.

In terms of uploading files, there are many sites that work. The most common are www.Sendspace.com and www.Yousendit.com, which aren't bad, but both run a bit slowly. I would reccomend either www.senduit.com, which is fast but has no upload bar, or www.mediafire.com which I've never uploaded to but the downloads are like lightning. When you are posting the download links, it is a good idea to post them as hxxp instead of http, because then they need to be copy pasted, which means the site doesn't know we are putting so much traffic into it's servers.

I'm in.

I think that we should make a list of people that want to upload albums and then follow it, then update it as more people want to join. No matter how we do it, everyone should get their turn.

That is a good plan! I will start assembling the list. I am putting you first because it would be unfair for me to start it and then immedeatly force my taste on people.

Khar you are number 3. The only way you will not get to upload is if people lose interest really fast, but I am hoping that doesn't happen. Also frank is fine, but since I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of stuff wont be your taste, try to be a little gentle.

Sure, I can always use the chance to get more exposure to new stuff. I'll just have to make sure I can find something people haven't already heard about.

After a couple minutes of thought, I have decided that I will be capping the club at 20, because otherwise I don't know if everyone will actually get a turn. I am not sure the numbers will get that high, but it's better to keep it under control, I think.

I would suggest that maybe you should stay out unless you're sure you can contribute. With limited space, it might keep somebody else who really wants to be involved out. Nothing against you personally, though.

I was referring to minkles, in case that wasn't obvious.

Also I am keeping 3 spots saved for people who aren't on right now but I think would want to take part, namely Spinless, Johnny_C, and possibly Skibas_Clavicle, is she has the time.

I'll be open minded. I normally am, and have occasionally been surprised at a very good album or artist being recommended by people with tastes I normally dislike: thus my enjoyment of Neutral Milk Hotel and British Sea Power. Hopefully the instruction to post albums not everyone will have heard will keep some interesting and left-field stuff cropping up.

This is a great idea, I reckon!  It's kinda what happens now informally on a lot of sharing forums, but just giving it its own breathing space.

I'm wondering about starting a second thread, to get another one going.  Would that be kosher?  It wouldn't detract from this one would it?

I think a theme could be cool... maybe no songs?  No rock?  Hm.  Just something to encourage a big variety of stuff to get discussed.

One suggestion I have is that we probably don't need to do a week per album.  I think, say, 3 days should be fine between uploads.  Most of us are bored enough that we check this board at least once every 3 days, if not every day we're near a computer, right?  And I think moving a little quicker would keep the interest level up.  Just a thought.

Ah, the fun part is going to be picking what album I'm going to spring on your folks.

Does this have to be a studio album? Or can it be a live album/compilation album by a band/multi-artist compilation? I'm not saying one I'd make up of my own, but that would be ridiculous. I mean like, for instance, the Trainspotting soundtrack, which is a great album in its own right.
