post rock (again)

hi peoples just to be annoying i've deceided to add to the massive influx of recomendation threads we've been having recently

anyway i was just wondering whether i could get some recomendations for post rock with lyrics (and i'm not talking about the rants GSYBE includes on there songs)

...and yes i already know about slint

Is the Sea and Cake considered post-rock?? Because I love what's-his-faces voice. Uhm shit, he did a solo album awhile ago...Ah well.

Other than that, I can't think of any. When I think post-rock, I think no vocals. Vocals are so "rock"; this is "post-rock."

Explosions in the Sky?  I think Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is post rock.  I don't know, correct me if i'm wrong.

no post rock has deep roots in the indie rock comunity because generally only the indie kids know about it

pretty much it usually involves instrumental music (but not always...i'm looking for the not always) building up in a cresendo and then gradually dieing down again

Post rock with lyrics is tougher than post rock without. Try 'Gregor Samsa', 'Sigur Ros', 'Sparrows Swarm and Sing' (a lot like GY!BE but still very good), and A Silver Mt. Zion. The newest 'Do Make Say Think' album has some lyrics as well, although only on a few songs. I'd also throw 'Efterklang' and 'Mum' to that list.

I know they are instrumental.  But they did do vocals on The Rescue.  Eh...sort of.  (Alright, I guess i didn't pay attention to what i was reading.  x_x)

Mum? I'd say they are more electronic than anything else.

While I haven't heard any of those bands listed I suggest you check out the newer Anathema albums, stuff like "A Fine Day to Exit" and "A Natural Disaster"  That description you gave (Crescendoing and then dieing down, fits their sound almost perfectly). Wikipedia seems to have their sound labeled as "Atmospheric Rock".

Ahh fair enough I've got albums by a few of those bands (Agalloch, Cult of Luna, Boris, Neurosis)

They don't really have that crescendo thing going on though...

to tommy: because (going back to the original post) the wikipedia tells me what post rock is but not whether or not the bands have a singer/lyrics to go with them and thus far in my expeditions into the genre i havn't found any bands out side of slint

to scytale: of the 4 you mentioned only aggaloch really seemed to match my current impression of post-rock and then still only to a degree
i recomend obtaining and listening to a copy of Yanqui U.X.O. by Godspeed you black emperor if your interested in the sound

Sam Prekop, he's done two solo albums now.  The Sea And Cake were called post-rock in the second round of re-defining, when post-rock was all about that Chicago scene...  I love his voice too, but don't give a shit about his songs.  And their cover of Sound And Vision was so redundant.  I would thoroughly recommend an EP largely of remixes called 'Two Gentlemen'.  All 3 remixes (by Jim O'Rourke, Bundy K Brown and Designer / Casey Rice) are better than the original songs.  Two have vocals, too. :)

My favourite Prekop-related thing is actually the Prefuse 73 track Last Night, where Herren chops and reverses Prekop's vocals so you can almost understand lyrics but never really get any idea what's going on.  It's the best kind of infuriating.

I'd say A Silver Mt. Zion is one of the best examples possible. Mogwai, of course - they have some vocal parts as well. This may be cheating, but the band From Monument To Masses takes different sound clips (news sound bites, interviews with people, stuff like that...not so much movie clips) and arranges them as almost a part of a story that they tell with the song. You may enjoy it.
