Also, thanks to Shane's linkage, I want the one with P-90s.

Hooooooooly fuck, Hagstrom, I love you

I want the Viking Deluxe.  It's three hundred dollars cheaper than the Gibson I had been lusting after for the longest time.

Guys, Nitro-Tone in Cambridge have the Viking II for $400. Just the humbuckers, though. Wow.

OK, so my guitar teacher finally told my dad off about my having a shitty acoustic.

SO I'M GETTING A NEW ACOUSTIC! $400 budget.

I don't really like Yamahas and stuff and I like really oaky, woody woods.

Alvarez.  Amazing guitars, cheap price.  Check it - http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/guitars/acoustic.asp?mfg=Alvarez

Here are reviews- http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Acoustic+Guitar/brand/Alvarez .  You'll notice, their overall ratings are all pretty consistently in the 9 or 10 out of 10 range.  Their action is like an electric, their tone is fantastic due to quality materials (typically solid spruce sitka top and mahogany sides), and the electronics on the acoustic electrics actually sound like an acoustic instead of like strings stretched across a tin can (see Ovation).

If you go for one of the pricier Yamahas you can get a damn fine nylonstring

Also, who gives a shit what color the jazzmaster is?  I just want one that's left-handed!

Japan still makes lefty Jazzmasters.
3 a year  <___<

And I know he said he didn't like Yamahas.  I'm just saying that the really nice ones are better than nearly any American nylonstring I've played.

For lower priced acoustic goodness, tho, look at Seagull.

I've stopped reading HarmonyCentral's reviews as they're usually written by new owners, who obviously like the instrument, because they just bought it, so it's just an endless string of positive reviews; sort of like the American Urban Radio Network, but for instruments instead of guitars. And you get idiots who give a guitar a 3 on features because it only has one volume and one tone knob, crap like that. Anyone know of any other review sites that offer a bit more perspective?

Edit: instruments instead of movies. Um, yeah. That makes more sense.

C: WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CHARGING $2700 FOR A LES PAUL STUDIO, GIBSON?
And they are charging $2300 for a shiny purple robot SG special, at guitar center at least, don't know what the MSRP is, but it is already 1k over the MSRP on the SG special.

The gibson robot takes like 12 seconds to tune between several popular tunings, making robotic sounds along the way.
The transperformance system, however, can be installed into nearly any solid body electric, tunes in 1-3 seconds, and allows thousands upon thousands of pre set and custom tunings.
It's also been around a lot longer.
Obviously, the downside is the cost ($3000). And I doubt it's compatible with a tremolo bar.
They're individually crafted (not enough business to factory-ify the process, at that price), so I wonder if the guy who does it would be able to do it to a 7 or 12 string? (or double neck?).
Jimmy Page has got like 3 of them and loves them to death.

I suppose not many make it to the US because they're not supposed to be trading there, but if you ask one of the guys on eBay who sell Fender Japan products or something to get one for you I'm sure they'll do it, I know some people who might do it for you even.

There's no law against that, just dealers and shops aren't allowed to, because it detracts from FMIC (Big Fender) sales. Fender Japan is a separate company from FMIC so they don't want thier products on their turf unless they're getting something out of it (like when they import Japanese Mustangs).

They should have a gang war and I hope Fender Japan hires a bunch of Yakuza. The conditions:

-FMIC wins, they stop making shit so expensive in comparison to actual manufacturing cost
-Fender Japan wins, they permanently discontinue that ugly-ass JagStang. Who the hell told them that was a good idea?

THEY'RE NOT BETTER MODELS WHEN YOU PLAY LEFT HANDED!

Wtf is with all the major American guitar manufacturers stopping production of lefty models?

Jeez, at least I can understand that *nobody* makes a viola rest left handed, so I just use a towel.  But a Jazzmaster?  That's the worst guitar ever to flip over!

Ok guys, I'm in dire need of an answer from one of you more experienced Guitar nuts here.  My aunt is going to buy either an Epiphone SG or Les Paul as a gift for someone special (the person receiving is a Guitar crazy person, but my Aunt is not).  She wants to know what to look for in a quality Epiphone so that when she gets it it won't be a bad purchase.  Since I've never actually had any experience with an Epiphones (or even Gibsons for that matter  :-( ), I have no idea what to tell her.  What do you guys think?

1. Make sure it's an SG. As much crap as I give Gaz about weight issues, he's right, Pauls are heavy as fuck and you can't reach the upper frets.
2. Uhhhh make somebody go with her who actually plays guitar.

Actually, most Epi Pauls aren't too heavy.  Heavier than an SG, but not as heavy as a table like an American one.
Def just take someone that does play is the key thing to remember.  It could be they have a great SG and crappy Paul, or vice versa, or they both suck, or they're both great.

I'd guess that the SG would be the more universally-accepted choice, but I'm mostly basing that on the fact that I don't like LPs all that much, because it's all about me. As for what to look for, there's no advice. Sure, I could say to sight down the fretboard, and check the action, and neck shape, and fret condition, but a layman just doesn't know what to look for. She needs either a salesperson she really, really trusts, or an experienced guitarist who actually knows what they're looking for. That said, it seems to me that the worst-case scenario in this case is a guitar of passable quality. I don't think Epi puts out epically bad instruments, do they?

I played a miniature Squier yesterday, much like my Bullet but waaaaay freakin' smaller. Holy shit that was fun.

One thing that depresses me is the fact that I know my SG is going to look really tiny on me, just like my Bullet does. But that's okay because people will be like "How can anybody rock out on such a tiny instrumHOOOOLY FUUUUUUUUUUCK"

Perhaps recommend somewhere online if she doesn't have someone to test the thing out, so perhaps a return can be arranged if she gets a lemon
