Edit: Firebird traded to OSG's patron saint of GAS. I get this in return!

He's dated it to '76. I'm likely going to get an intonable wraparound from Guitar Fetish, and possibly (mayyyybe) remove the neck pickup and use it as a Junior.

Nicccceeee.

I modded my TurboRAT last night.  Apparently, the only difference between it and the other RAT circuits was the clipping diodes.  So I switched 'em.

God damnit, Bearer.  I hate you so much (QuixoteCaster is absolutely brilliant, though).

What are the pickup combinations again?  Obviously there is bridge, neck, bridge and neck, but then you've got both in phase or out of phase, then in series and stuff?

On a different note: I found a used Epiphone EB-0 bass guitar at the shop near me and I kind of really want it.

These are the different configurations.  Surprisingly, given the right amp settings, each one is pretty unique.

"Selector Switch" - "Volume Pot" , "Tone Pot" :

1-Down, Down:     Series Neck/Bridge – Series – In Phase;
1-Down, Up:          Series Neck/Bridge – Series – Out Phase;
1-Up, Down:          Parallel Neck/Bridge – Series – In Phase;
1-Up, Up:               Parallel Neck/Bridge – Series – Out Phase;
2-Down, N/A:        Series Neck;
2-Up, N/A:             Parallel Neck;
3-Down, Down:     Series Neck/Bridge – Parallel – In Phase;
3-Down, Up:          Series Neck/Bridge – Parallel – Out Phase;
3-Up,Down:           Parallel Neck/Bridge – Parallel – In Phase;
3-Up, Up:               Parallel Neck/Bridge – Parallel – Out Phase;
4-N/A,N/A:            Bridge;

Also, this is the logo I made:

I went to a pretty awesome local guitar place on Sunday, and I played some really fantastic shit. I would've posted about this earlier, but someone forgot to pay the internet bill, soooo.... :roll:

Anyway, the place was nearly empty for some reason or another, so I took it upon myself to play every single guitar I saw that caught my interest. I played Les Pauls, SGs, Jaguars, Casinos, Rickenbackers, all that kind of thing. The two instruments I was the most impressed with was a Japanese Fender Blue Flower Telecaster (seen here: http://www.davesguitar.com/product/95198.JPG) and a Fano JM6 (this is the actual guitar I played right here: http://www.altomusic.com/components/guitars/Images/DSCF5649%20lg.jpg)

The Fano was probably the best guitar I've ever played, no lie. Through a Super Reverb, it was easily the most beautiful tone I've ever been able to coax out of an instrument. Furthermore, the neck was perfectly broken in and the Bigsby was soooooo smooth. Too bad it's $1899.  :-( Fortunately, the floral Telecaster was pretty excellent too, and it was under a thousand bucks, so I'm pretty interested in that now.

Man fuck you guys, if the guy on OSG (Shane: yes it's Pat) is willing to hold onto his ES-345 clone until June or July, I will be getting a damn nice guitar for not a lot of money.

I can't even remember if that thing has a Bigsby or not, lawl. (edit: no it does not. Trapeze tailpiece. See below)

Edit: HEY YOU FUCKERS LOOK WHAT I AM BUYING IN JUNE OR JULY

El Degas ES-345 clone. "Lawsuit" guitar. Full-hollowbody, 2 humbuckers, varitone switch, and oh my GOD what a gorgeous instrument. 22 frets and the neck 'bucker is placed properly instead of in a shitty SG-esque spot well away from the sweet spot. No fret buzz anywhere, according to the guy selling her. He replaced the tuners with Grovers, a major improvement on the original tuners. Bolt-on neck, so it's not quite a proper ES-345, but it's not like I could ever be pegged as a sustain junkie (I play a Jaguar for shit's sake).

I cannot WAIT until I can get this fucker paid for. Like, I REALLY can't wait.

Today I played some guitars at a fun shop in Santa Fe, where I am currently on spring break.  My favorite was a very attractive dreadnought acoustic-electric, a Blueridge BR-60CE.  I've been looking for a mid-range acoustic-electric for college, and my dad hinted that if I really like this one he might finance the purchase.  This guitar is pretty awesome, one of the most comfortable acoustics I've played.  The finish is gourgeous, and the tone is really nice: nice definition in the attack without being too tinny and a lot of resonance.  I've yet to try it plugged in, but the pickup and preamp are Fishman so I'm guessing it'll be good, and I'm going back sometime soon to try it.

Here's the pic from the company website:

Got this one a year ago.  The Fender Sonoran SCE acoustic-electric, mahogany neck and body, rosewood fingerboard, 20 frets, dreadnought, sweet as a peach, deep as the Buddha smoking hookah.  Plays like a 'lectric, sounds pristine plugged in.  greenMonkey, if you get the chance, I recommend at least checking it out before purchasing anything else.

I don't even plan on using the Varitone on that thing. I'm just gonna switch it to whatever gives me high-enough amounts of treble. I figure since it's a full-on hollowbody, I won't have any trouble whatsoever getting bass or mids out of it. Then I am going to dime out my amp and my Tonebone (oh wait, already do with my Jag).

Which reminds me, I love having all the EQ settings dimed out lately. I don't know why but there is something about having the Marshall and the Tonebone dimed out together that gives me the perfect tone. The only things I change are volume and distortion, and it sounds perfect. Maybe I am lucky.

I think it is made out of pine or maple, I really don't know. It's my '53 Kay acoustic I'm talking about here.

Warped neck, huh?  That sucks.  I had that happen on my 50's Kay and I ended up just trading it in to a luthier.  It can be fixed, but it involves removing the fret board, the truss rod (if your Kay is of the later variety that had one) and occassionally the neck itself.  Then the luthier does something involving steam and heavy clamping, followed by some planing.  Then, they fill the truss rod channel, re-channel it, and reattach the truss rod and fretboard.

As you can imagine, this is expensive to have done, and should really only be tried by a luthier.  Now the even worse news- planing removes wood.  If the neck twisted once due to weak, cheap, porous wood, etc., it probably will again now that it has less mass.  On the other hand, you can have graphite reinforcement rods installed which may help.  Lots of guys who are into restoring sears brands like Kay, Sovereign, etc. put in truss rods and graphite bars as a matter of course.

My dads done quite a bit of work restoring old acoustic guitars. The graphite strengthening rod works pretty well in them. Although as Chad said it does require a lot of work and might not be worth it unless it's a really nice guitar.

The sound of the thing is great, if that's what you mean by a nice guitar. I just wanna make her playable. I have a choice of saving up for a lower-budget Taylor (I've seen new ones go for 6, and I LOVED the way they played) or Takamine or something, or I could make an amazing player's guitar out of this old strumbox. Now, for specifics that you mentioned:

Warped neck, huh?  That sucks.  I had that happen on my 50's Kay and I ended up just trading it in to a luthier.  It can be fixed, but it involves removing the fret board, the truss rod (if your Kay is of the later variety that had one) and occassionally the neck itself.  Then the luthier does something involving steam and heavy clamping, followed by some planing.  Then, they fill the truss rod channel, re-channel it, and reattach the truss rod and fretboard.

She does indeed have a truss rod. And removing the neck isn't a problem at all, it's got a bolt-on neck. I'll definitely mention the strengthening rod when I take her in.

I'm pretty sure the neck twisting was just decades of neglect. She was a case baby, so you would probably see more scratches on a diamond. But apparently when my dad got her in the mail (eBay, Christmas present for me about 2 years ago) she was tuned almost completely to pitch.

One thing I will definitely ask is whether planing is absolutely necessary. I don't want to do anything that isn't instrumental in getting the sucker to play well (pardon the 'instrumental' pun, I really couldn't think of another word).

Jesus Christ guys I just went to MusiciansFriend to window shop for guitars. I haven't done that in a few months because I've been too busy with photography and my money just went towards a brand new camera. But I looked and I'm about to cry. Tele Thinlines are $950 now. The American Deluxe Tele is just under $1900. That's a $700 price increase.

Someone please tell me this is just some sick April Fool's joke. I feel like I'm going to be violently ill, no joke.

Well, I meant a rival in the fifteen-watt, triode/pentode-switchable, mini-head market.

Does anyone know how to get rid of fret-buzz?  I never really cared all that much before, because I'd only play my Strat through my amp, and almost always through a dirt box, so fret buzz was never much of an issue.  It's really been driving me crazy lately, though, and I want to deal with it.
