Tell me what a good first electric guitar is. I don't own one and I think I might like too. I can sorta play an acoustic and have played around on a few electric guitars (don't remember what kind) of friends and such but I would mostly be teaching myself all but the most rudimentary basics on this thing. That being said, I don't really plan to rock out a whole lot. Most of the music stuff I've been involved with has been noisy, drone-y, ambient kind stuff and I'd like that to continue. For example, I played around with a guitar and a Boss RC-20XL Looping pedal doing stuff and had lots of fun with it. So, your mission: tell me where to start. I can't spend much money but a somewhat decent guitar and a cheap but effective amp is what I need. Help, oh might QC Guitar thread magi!
Also, I liked the Boss pedal. Is it a smart buy, though? I guess I should be asking the guitar pedal thread but since it's related to my question, what are one or two good, not very expensive pedals for effects and such if my aim is to make drone-y sounding things?

If you're just making droney stuff then maybe a really nasty, cheap guitar is what you want so you can then downtune it without fear of breaking stuff.

Otherwise, the Yamaha Pacifica is a very nice starter guitar. The Squier Hello Kitty one is also meant to be quite good, and you look cool as fuck while playing it.

My beloved Prudence and I went live on national TV tonight.

Jeph, holy shit, that Tele is going to be beautiful when it arrives. I am SO JEALOUS. I am assuming you're putting a dog-ear P-90 in the bridge? Please say yes to this.

I am also on the Ibanez-bashing bandwagon. Jeph also clearly has too many guitars.

Pat, what were you doing on television?

That is the stock photo they found for reference during the high speed chase.  @^: but yeah that.

I am curious about the new VOX guitars.  The ability to choose if the pickup is a single coil, P90, or humbucker sounds interesting.  Not interesting enough to justify $2500+ when I could buy 3 for that price that have the different pickup combos, but none the less.

Ignooooring the threadjack.

Are you talking about those weird semi-hollow deals with the 3-coil pickups? I have heard sound samples and the thing sounds fucking INTENSE.

Any other special electronics in that thing?  Cause if not, you should seriously consider a 4-way tele switch for both pups in series and a push/pull knob for phase reversal.  Open the thing up!

Actually, 100% of them do. But they're all made of different woods and have different pickups so they sound pretty different to me.

I DO plan to branch out, but this is the first guitar I've ever had custom-built specifically for me. I want it to be able to do everything I need a guitar to do, and for that I need a humbucker in the bridge.

If this guitar turns out as good as I think it will, I might sell off some others and get him to make me a Jazzmaster style guitar with 3 P90s and a 5-way switch.

Hah, good luck getting Creston to do anything that fancy! Dude doesn't even like six-saddle bridges. He's kind of cranky about what he will and won't build, which I found great because it means he actually cares about what he's doing.

Also, you have to ground the pickup covers separately from the pickups themselves

-500K Push/Pull knob
-4-way switch

For $25, I'm just saying.  Soldering aint all that hard.  Of course don't do it to the nice new custom job.  Get one of those axes you're planing on selling and do this to it first.

I think there's a point where the amount of time you would spend onstage fiddling with the controls for that motherfucker outweigh the time you could shred on it  before you need a new sound and have to CHANGE IT AGAIN.

My friend just had his Jazzmaster pickups replaced with Lollar P90's which are made to fit the Jazzmaster pickup size.  It has completely changed the tone of the guitar, made it creamier, smoother, bluesier, and it also screams with the gain cranked.  I kind if want to steal it from him.

I've yet to hear a good reason for having a single coil in the bridge position? "Hey, I want a horribly bright and quacky sound" ?

Single coils are only ever good on the neck position, although I'd prefer a humbucker there, too.

Single coil in the bridge should be a modifier pickup, used in conjunction with, say, another single coil in the neck (see telecaster) or a humbucker in the neck (see awesome telecaster).
Humbucker + Single coil = very yes!

Hey guys, I haven't posted in this thread in ages, mostly because I kind of stopped playing guitar.  So, I have a question: where can I go and sell some of my gear?  Since I don't really play much any more, I was thinking of getting rid of all of my electric gear (Strat, little amp, a couple pedals) and just stick with my acoustic (since that's what I play when I do play anyway).  Off the top of my head, I'd say eBay for the small stuff, but what about everything else, the guitar particularly?  I was thinking maybe Craigslist.  I'm sure I could go to a pawnshop or Guitar Center, but I dunno how much they'd give me.  I'm not looking to make a profit off anything, I just want to get close to what I paid for them.

I've said it before, but that G&L is pretty much my ultimate guitar.  I played one and nearly died.  The versatility is amazing, and no matter what pickup configuration you choose it sounds heavenly.  I would buy one and put a Bigsby on it but I have no money, and won't be getting the ridiculous amount needed for such a purchase in the foreseeable future.
