Metal anybody?
« on: 20 Nov 2007, 00:26 »

I'm a huge fan of obscure metal that managed to get mentioned in QC.  Which, coincidentally, made me love both QC, Jeph and Dora so much more all at the same time.

Things such as Opeth... who are friggen great.  Jazz Metal Fusion crazy shit!

and Agalloch.  Interestingly enough, I believe Marten was wearing an Agalloch shirt in a couple of the panels.  Which made me so happy.

Thoughts?  Concerns?  Insults?  Lay 'em at me.  Opinions will be thoroughly read, dismissed, and the user will be made fun of.  Not necessarily in that order.

Dude, Opeth isn't obscure. They're on Roadrunner. Agalloch is more so, but still.

Also, you're gonna need to be a bit more specific than 'hay metal is pretty awesome right guys'. Are you looking to find new bands? Hell, what kind of metal are you even talking about? There's about a billion different kinds.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and say that you should listen to Skyclad.

Because it doesn't really matter what kind of music you like. You should still listen to Skyclad.

It was really just a general blathering of a 1.30 am boredom session.

I like metal.  All of it.. mostly.

And yeah, Opeth ain't obscure no-more.

but, things like Stolen Babies, Divinity, Green Carnation, Pelican, etc are a bit more obscure.

Though this board sounds like it would know who all those bands are.. except for maybe Divinity.

If somebody does know who they are who arn't from where I'm from... I'll totally give you imaginary hero-cookies.

I havn't heard of skyclad, I will check them out.

I was just stoked that Mastodon were mentioned a few times throughout the strip. I don't care if they're not obscure or anything, they're one of my favourite bands.

I wandered off and forgot I hadn't posted it, but I was going to write as the first comment in this thread:

Dude, Opeth aren't obscure. They're on a major record label. They chart in the US. They've sold over a million albums.

STORM ARE MINDS ARE KIND OF ALIKE.

When you say Divinity, are you talking about the defunct symph-black band or the active MDM band? I think they're both from Canada. I'd say Stolen Babies was the most obscure band you mentioned there.

EDIT: oooh, lets have a competition to see who can mention the most obscure metal band! Askuror, Pagan Spirit, Matriarch.

Okay I won lets move on.

You win.  And you confuse me with the term MDM.  I googled it.  Nothin' came up.  and they're def. not synth-black.

Yeah, Opeth used to be obscure when I started listening to them.  But yes, now they are big.  and still awesome.

METALLICA TOTALLY RULZ MAN!!!!  They have some good tunes pre-black album.

Funny story about them, which is entirely false, though I think is humerous.

It's my take on the origin of their name.

During their first-ever show, mr. singer dude.. lars.. or lance.. or kirk.. or whoever, when yelling their name for the first-ever time outside of their jam-space, added his obligitory, "Ahhh" like he does to everything.

They're original name, "METALLIC!" but, upon yelling the cursed words, "WE ARE METALLIC-AHHHHH" everybody thought it was better so they changed it.

I just listen to music, I don't care who it comes from.

I thought Nuclear Blast had a few offices around the world.

Unless it's from The End.. I haven't been disappointed in one of their bands.

Okay I won lets move on.

I HAVE NOT HAD MY TURN YET.

Also: The only Divinity I'm aware of is from Canada. They're pretty good.

Finally: Yes, Metal is awesome. It is clearly the best genre out there, and those who are unaware of this fact are to be pitied. Can I recommend you get some High on Fire? Death is the Communion is a totally awesome album. And please don't listen to Opeth. Also: NEUROSIS AND ISIS.

But if there's one band recommendation I would give you, it would totally be The Angelic Process. Their newest album is the perfect mix of shoegaze and metal. You WILL blow your load listening to it.

Talking of metal, I am so horribly jealous of anyone who is able to go to this, undoubtedly set to be one of the finest musical events of all time:

Quote
Magic Circle Music
Proudly Presents
The Magic Circle Festival 2008
“The Kings Of Metal 20th Anniversary Event”
Bad Arolsen, Germany

• 4 days of unlimited metal madness
• 20,000 free beers
• 20,000 free copies of the new MANOWAR single
• 4 Custom Built Choppers owned by MANOWAR band members given away
• 6 classic MANOWAR albums performed live in their entirety
• $115.00 (80 EUR), for the greatest heavy metal gathering of the year

What more could anyone ask for?
Maybe the real question is, what more could there be?

This is ultimate Christmas present to the Greatest Fans On Earth:
From now until December 31st, everyone who purchases a ticket to the Magic Circle Festival 2008 will receive not only a FREE newly designed Magic Circle Festival t-shirt, but - get ready for this - you will also receive a copy of the new ‘Magic Circle Festival Volume 1’ Double DVD FREE!!!

AND - Tickets are on sale now!

After the incredible success of the first-ever Magic Circle Festival in 2007, with an attendance of over 25,000 fans, Magic Circle Music and MANOWAR are pleased to announce a bigger, better and of course louder Magic Circle Festival in 2008.

Never content to be simply “good enough”, MANOWAR and Magic Circle Music fully intend to make this year’s festival twice as good as the original. While the original festival lasted two days, the 2008 edition, will last a full four days, starting on Wednesday and continuing through Saturday night. The event will take place amidst vast campgrounds so that fans can be there from start to finish.

Beginning on Wednesday July 9th at 12:00 noon, a true heavy metal fan - the reigning “Mr. Metal” Udo Sapper - will break the chains to the campground in a welcoming ceremony that will open the festival campgrounds to all the fans of true metal. This is when the party will begin. While fans begin to enter the campground and unpack, music will be heard from a stage set up in the campground, as bands from all around the world will compete in a “Battle Of The Metal Bands Contest”. The winning band will play on the main festival stage and be awarded with a recording contract from Magic Circle Music. Fans can submit their band videos for judging through www.youtube.com with more details forthcoming.

From that point on, 20,000 free beers will be given away to fans in attendance.

Closing the day’s festivities that evening will be a torch lit ceremony where the Viking ship that appeared onstage during the Demons, Dragons and Warriors tour and was used during last year’s festival will be completely burned and sent to Valhalla.

On Thursday, Mr. Metal will lead the legions of the metal army to open the main festival grounds to the public as he runs through the festival ground - torch in hand - on his way to the stage tower that will light the eternal flame of metal, which will burn atop the stage for the length of the festival. Then, all fans can meet, hang out and get autographs from MANOWAR, HolyHell and other bands that will play the festival.

Later that evening, everyone will be able to attend the sound check that will give fans a chance to preview the next two days of metal devastation. And at 12:00 midnight, there will be an open air screening of the long-awaited new MANOWAR DVD, ‘Hell On Earth Part 5’ which will be released that same day.

Where the original festival saw two custom-built chopper motorcycles given away, in 2008, four totally unique, custom-built choppers - personally owned and used by MANOWAR - will be given away to lucky fans; These are the exact same bikes that have adorned the pages of every major rock and biker magazine the world over.

The year 2008 will mark the 20th anniversary of the classic MANOWAR album “Kings Of Metal”. In the words of Joey DeMaio “It’s a party and you’re all invited to celebrate”. In order to commemorate this momentous occasion, Magic Circle Music will once again construct one of the largest stages in Germany. On this massive stage, MANOWAR will perform their first six albums in their entirety.

On Friday night, the Metal Kings will perform “Battle Hymns”, “Into Glory Ride” and “Hail To England”. On Saturday “Sign Of The Hammer”, “Fighting The World” and finally “Kings Of Metal” will all be played from start to finish. This set will also feature a bombastic first-time rendition of “The Crown And The Ring (Lament Of The Kings)”, which will feature the original choir and orchestral performance that has never been seen before.

All of this will only cost $115.00 (80 EUR).
Imagine a 4-day festival for less than the price of a regular concert ticket. But that is not all. This admission fee will also include parking and camping.

Magic Circle Music encourages fans to write in and submit any ideas they have for the Magic Circle Festival 2008.

Don’t miss out on the biggest heavy metal experience of 2008. Be sure to attend the Magic Circle Music Festival.

True Metal Shall Reign Forever! Death To False Metal! Hail and Kill!

Tickets are now available for purchase via Credit Card or PayPal and two additional methods of payment are coming soon. For more information, please visit www.magiccirclemusic.com and www.manowar.com.

That sounds pretty awesome. Then again, I'm interested to see what the rest of the line-up is. At the moment, it just sounds like a four day long Manowar concert, which is, of course, pretty fucking awesome.

Then again, Iron Maiden are headlining Wacken Open Air this year.

That is an event somewhat like the planets aligning to unleash the four horsemen...OF THE AROCKALYPSE.

The rest of the line-up will undoubtedly be terrible (particularly seeing as HolyHell are the only confirmed band so far). But as you say, it will basically be an extended Manowar gig. With free beer. And free motorcycles. And Sign of The motherfucking Hammer. Immense.

Speaking of the Wacken line-up, I wonder if Carcass are going to be any good?

The line-up for the re-union is Steer, Walter, Amott, Erlandsson.

So hopefully yes. The only real worry is that Bill Steer hasn't done anything since Swansong apart from blues rock. One can imagine a scenario where the melodic tendencies of Swansong are taken too far in re-interpreting old material, thus ruining classics.

Wacken is insane for reunion gigs, and is pretty much an obligatory stop on any reunion tour.

This is why I have seen Sabbat, Immortal, Atheist and Emperor live, but you guys haven't.

Fuck you, Khar.

Now that I think about it, tickets to Wacken would cost me about what I earn in two months on a soldier's pay.

Wacken is insane for reunion gigs, and is pretty much an obligatory stop on any reunion tour.

This is why I have seen Sabbat, Immortal, Atheist and Emperor live, but you guys haven't.

I've seen Emperor and Immortal live before they broke up or were "on hold" the first time.

Not the other two though, but you can replace them with At the Gates and Dissection. ;)

I've got a Metallica t-shirt.

In my defense, I didn't buy it. I won it in a headbanging competition.
Well, if it's pre Load you shouldn't be ashamed. ...And Justice for All is one of my favorite thrash albums ever.

Also, in terms of metal bands whose names haven't been beaten over our heads a million times, I'd have to say Meshuggah and Periphery.

I was trying to get the support spot for Immortal when they come out next year, we know the guy who is organizing it and we were most disappointed, if not surprised, when they said it was already booked. Ah well.

Agalloch, isnt that some god of chaos in moorcocks books?

No.

I honestly don't really care much about At The Gates, fantastically over-rated band, but I wouldn't have minded seeing Dissection. Did you see the real Dissection, or Rebirth of Dissection?

There's nothing I'd swap for having seen Sabbat, except maybe Martin Walkyier re-joining Skyclad and doing a small venues tour of the British Isles.

While I do agree that At The Gates are "fantastically over-rated" these days, and the plethora of clone-bands or artists that were inspired by them are usually always painful to listen to, I was a pretty big fan when "Slaughter Of the Soul" first dropped, and at that time, it was pretty much something people hadn't heard before, unless of course you were listening to Eucharist and Cardinal Sin before anyone. They put on a great show.

Real Dissection. Same show as ATG.  :-)

if you want an obscure band that is absolutely amazing, check out Dawnbringer.

They're on Battle Kommand records, their newest record, In Sickness And In Dreams, is ace.

While you're at it, check out:
Without Grief- "Deflower" (melodic death with seven minute songs that aren't boring)

Dimension Zero- "Penetrations From The Lost World" (like At The Gates, but with harsher vocals)

Disarmonia Mundi- "Mindtricks" (the singer from Soilwork in a band that's better than current Soilwork)

Dawn- "Slaughtersun, Crown Of The Triarchy" (epic, crushingly dark blackened metal)

Aeon- "Bleeding The False" (shit lyrics, but excellent brutal death)

Sotajumala- "Death Metal Finland" (The title says it all.)

Ajattara- anything but the new record, "Kalmanto".

Tyr- "Eric The Red" (viking metal at it's finest. clean vocals abound. cheesy, yes, but soooo good.)

Angelcorpse- "The Inexorable"

Anubis Rising- "Funerary Preamble" (it's a collection of all their stuff...like Opeth, but minus the wankery, and a little more sludgy)

21 Lucifers- "The The Name Of..."....ex members of Without Grief doing melodic death with a bit of grind)

Belphegor- either" Goatreich" or "Lucifer Incestus".

Heaven Shall Burn- "Deaf To Our Prayers" (somewhat hardcore influenced, possibly the angriest record ever)

Decapitated- either "The Negation" or "Organic Hallucinosis"

Swallow The Sun- "Hope" (crushing doom with death metal vocals)

While Heaven Wept- "Of Empires Forlorn" (doom with clean sung, almost power metal type vocals)

Eternal Lies- "Spiritual Deception" (melodic death)

Fleshcrawl- "As Blood Runs From The Sky We Walk The Path Of Endless Fire" (old school Swedish death, but from Germany. classic)

Goatwhore- anything

Rapture- "Silent Stage" or "Songs For The Withering" (somewhat doomy, but with a bit of rock thrown in, at least in terms of feeling.)

Guttural Secrete- "Reek Of Pubescent Despoilment" (my buddies....one of the best goredeath bands ever. Ultra brutal, ultra sick. Death slam at it's finest)

Jonin- "The Secret" (metal from North Carolina? good, clean singing? technical music? good stuff)

Killwhitneydead- either "Hell To Pay" or "Nothing Less Nothing More" (the only hardcore band I like)

Keen Of The Crow- "Premonition" (similar to Swallow The Sun. Now broken up unfortunately)

Sanctity- "Road To Bloodshed" (if you're tired of waiting for the new Testament record, this should tide you over)

Mercenary- "The Hours That Remain" (power metal? death metal? thrash? all of the above)

Vehemence- "God Was Created" (is there such a thing as progressive brutal death? this might be it)

Miseration- "Your Demons Your Angels" (the singer of Scar Symmetry in a band that sounds like Scar Symmetry, but with some hardcore influence and more brutality)

Sorrow- "Hatred and Disgust" (turn back the clock to 1992, turn up the suck, and somehow enjoy it. Insane vocals, especially considering how old this is)

Mork Gryning- "Maelstrom Chaos" (black metal from Greece)

Pyrexia- "Age Of The Wicked" (slam from NY....mosh pit madness)

Mors Principium Est- "The Unborn" (melodic death with lots of keyboards and super fast polka beats)

Myrkskog- "Deathmachine" (like Zyklon? well, Zyklon sounds a lot like these guys. Actually, some members are now in Zyklon. or were. I don't care, this is better.)

Impaled- anything (like Carcass? yea, so do they. Sounds like Exhumed, but with a sense of humor and way more talent. Great live band, good guys. Kinda iffy on record.)

Ninnghizhidda- "Blasphemy" (semi symphonic last 90's black-ish metal)

Nile- "Amongst The Catacombs of Nephren-ka" (lots of people rave about new Nile, about the speed and technicality, but I find this far more brutal and vastly superior. Plus, Chief Spier's vocals are WAY deeper and more brutal than anyone in the band now)

Woods Of Ypres- "Pursuit Of The Sun" (this is what Wolves In The Throne Room would sound like with talent and good recording)

The Project Hate- "Cyber Sonic Super Christ" (i hate their new stuff, but this, their debut, is excellent.)

Pyorrhoea- "The Eleventh Shall Be My Slave" (goredeath from Poland. great sound quality, excellent musicianship)

Vintersorg- "Till Fjalls" (viking metal all about snow and nature and space and stars and stuff, sung all in swedish)

Quo Vadis- "Day Into Night" (everyone talks about how good Martyr is, and they are, but Quo Vadis is by far the superior band from Montreal)

Taake- "Bjoergvin" or "Doedskvad" (great "true" black metal that's actually well played and well recorded)

Torchbearer- anything. side project for members of too many bands to list. melodic. brutal. catchy. all at the same time.

Unmoored- "Indefinite Soul Extension" (yet more melodic death from the singer of Scar Symmetry.)

Weirding Way- "Panspermia" (i'm biased because i'm friends with them, but it's really good "sci-fi grind". Their term, not mine.)

1349- anything. harsh, hateful black metal.

happy listening.

Wait, fucking Carcass is going to be there?

Goddamn you Europeans.

I'm SO not going to wacken

way too many people. I mean, a huge crowd can be cool, but it really sucks to be far away from the stage
also, when I'd go to wacken, I'd pay for many shitty bands too, wich I really don't want to.
I prefer smaller open airs, like Party.san (only death and black metal, this year they had primordial, dying fetus, kreator, immolation, Cephalic Carnage, Grave, Asphyx, Gorgoroth, Vader, Belphegor and others), doom shall rise or the mountains of death

Agalloch I got into souly through QC. The have a really awesome sound, I wish there were more tabs of their stuff. Or I had the skill to tab it myself. I had a listen to Russian Circles, too, after it was mentioned in the blog. And The Sword, but they're not exactly obscure anymore since they became known as 'that shitty band from guitar hero'.
