(It is because they are albinos thus their chromatophores aren't working)

(Oooh. Quite interesting. Some of the snakes in the links Phil[I think] posted earlier were albinos. They were pretty much my favorites.)

Blue-ringed and yes. Very bloody poisonous. Also tiny, but mostly just poisonous.

Its amazing what you can do with the power of Genetics. My personal favorites are ones like the Luecisistic and the Piebald, which the first having no working chromatophores at all and the second them only working in patches, making the coolest effect ever.

I don't understand one goddamn word in that graphic that Yelley posted, but fluorescent colors on animals are AWESOME

Also I am pretty sure they made yeast cells live for like 10x their normal life span. That seems pretty excellent, genetic manipulation is badass

It was good enough for Samuel L Jackson.

Also, mixing that bluish-red tiny frog and a chameleon would be sick.

Edit: Bad habit.  Habits die hard.  Die Hard was pretty good.

now what have we been taught about quoting the person above us Paco? And also, I guess conceivably if you put enough fo those frog things in the background a chameleon would be able to copy some of the colors to an extent...

Edit: Damn right it was a good movie.

I came to this thread hoping to learn something.
I infact learnt many things. The first was what a Chromatophore is, and what it isn't. It's definately not some form of tomato. Secondly, that these animals are pretty awesome. And finally, I am still very scared of cephalopods.

Well... either your bright colours will entice females to your superior genetic material, or they'll steer clear 'cause you look poisonous.

Could go either way, really.

Some kind of complex, mate-enticing dance might tip the balance.

Actually that's a movie too, and is fucking hilarious.  I've never looked forward to the dialogue in a porn movie, except for when I saw this.

I saw it on Cinemax once, or at least the first part of it. I think that the studio that made it may have been in charge of the Planet of the Apes porno as well. Didn't catch it's title. (Also, scrambled porn is epic. THIS IS A FACT.)

I always thought "(t)horny devil" was a pretty amusing name, personally. Poor thorny devils. They're not horrible at all! Well, unless you're an ant . . .

. . . Sternus vulgaris, on the other hand, now there's a well-named species.

Oh, you mean horny toads/horned lizards? (yes, that's what we called them) The little endangered species that can shoot blood out of its eyeballs and eats ants? Back where I grew up you weren't allowed to touch them, not because they were dangerous but because they were threatened. Growing up I remember being able to find them anywhere as a little kid but their being less and less as I grew older. Kinda sad, loved watching them eat those gigantic red ants (not fire ants, some other species). We bought a Rocky Mountain Horned lizard from the pet store once (a non-endangered species, captive-bred), but it died because the guys at the pet store had no idea what they were talking about when they said to feed him crickets, there's a type of acid that they get from ants that's necessary for their diet. Blah.

Anyway, back on topic slightly I still say that those chameleons are the coolest things ever, and I think it would be a worthy investment to buy one. Which I now intend to do some day alongside the Green Tree Python that I'm going to buy. Seriously the one named Slash has the most awesome color combo I've ever seen.

Edit: Nevermind
"The thorny devil is only distantly related to the morphologically similar North American horned lizards of the genus Phrynosoma, and is more an example of convergent evolution."

those are honey-pot ants, they make their own, and members of the colony act as living storage units for food for the others, usually by hanging from the ceilings of their tunnels. The other ants can then come up and take honey from their butts at their leasure.
