have you seen this robot?
« on: 29 Jan 2008, 10:17 »

Hi guys, it's kinda odd to start a thread for this but I have a rather simple question I need help with. Does anyone know of a kid's toy of a robot with a screen and microphone? It looks something like this:

I know I've seen one before but I have no idea what it's called. I need to find it for a project I'm working on.

I can't see that image to see if it's at all related to what I'm talking about.

It was kinda like a Speak & Spell, only it was, y'know, a robot.

oo that isn't the one I'm thinking of, but that's very close. I might use that if I can't find the one I want, but I would prefer a robot with a face and the one I'm thinking of had a face.

I wish I could say that's the first time we've implied that Tommy is a pedophile.

Don't worry, even inanimate objects do it.

That's actually kinda close. Long story short, I am planning to do an art installation of a robot that learns from it's environment.

ADDITION: The more I think about it the more I'm sure my sister had one back when we were kids. Not that that really helps any, but it does date the toy to the late 80s/early 90s.

ADDITION2: My sister just emailed me back and recognized it from a home movie shot one Christmas before we moved to Korea. So like really really little, before elementary school. That would be early to mid 80s.

I'm starting to think maybe I should use a modern toy that has a similar look, because something from that long ago will be pretty impossible to find.

That's not what I'm thinking of, but the Verboot would be excellent for what I have in mind. Thanks!

Incidentally, the first line about Omnibot made me lol.

omg you're right, how did I not think of that? I don't know if that is good or bad news.

It's the Playskool karaoke thing; like pen's, not quite the same but very very close.

Its new but it sounds like gold

Also perhaps it is in one of these shots? Just to at least identify what you wanted.

As perfect as that robot would be for what I'm doing (it's purpose as a personal assistant for the elderly plays into what I'm doing,) it's waaaaaaay out of my price range. Especially considering I'm just going to rip out the guts, so it's not like I need any of the sophisticated functionality.

That said, buried in the comments on that page is a link to this:
http://www.computermuseum.li/Testpage/AlphieII-Playskook.htm

That's the one I'm thinking of! Of course, now that I see it clearly, I'm thinking I'll go with the Tomy Verboot mentioned above.

ADDITION: Incidentally, read the comments of the article lordnagash linked. It's like the Picture Thread never left!
