Guys it was a code. He was counting in a different base, duh. The only base that does not contradict the present digits and translates '36' to a usable number is base eight, which is the obvious solution. Making the permutation 38 11 7 in base ten.
I already opened the locker, though, and you probably don't want to look in there anyways.

Now that that's out of the way, I am constantly amazed at the insensitivity of people I otherwise consider to be quite smashing.  I am less worried about rape jokes that are obviously jokes than I am about people casually dropping it into conversation.  I came across it a lot when I was playing an MMO in a guild.  I got the wonderful experience of seeing people I was working with at the time who were absolutely lovely people explain to me how they got together with so and so and gang-raped this or that mob.  Even "murder" or "beat the fuck out of" would have been perfectly reasonable things to say under the circumstances.  Another example would be to say that a powerful item "rapes".  "Oh yeah, I got this Sword of Swordening last night, it totally rapes".  Since when was raping considered a good thing, you fucking cockspank?

Also, thank you to those who were trying to veer this flaming bandwagon toward "useful conversation" territory.

ha-HA.

Personally, I'd consider the kind of person who might associate rape (non-consensual sex) with anything other than genuinely ugly feelings, of very questionable character.

However, there is this joke to consider:

Quote from: Dusty Bottoms, in íThree Amigos!, a veritable wellspring of comedy

I know it's not positive, but are you offended by it? I think it's probably one of the more subtle rape jokes I've seen and doesn't really pass it off as cool or okay. But it was just something I was curious about.

I think that that comic isn't offensive, because it isn't a big, bold font saying

RAPE LOL

but is rather just a joke on people's parents wanting them to have kids to the point of extreme measures. Rape is not in and of itself the joke, but just an implied mechanism for the joke. DRINK IT is the punch-line, not RAPE RAPE LOL.

Whether the actual punchline is rape or whether it's just a mechanism, it still offends me. Maybe it's just me, but seriously? I don't think it's funny either way.

Also, I think it's lame to post rape jokes and be like "Does this offend you?" Sure, YOU may find it funny, but I don't, and asking me about a specific example every time is just going to piss me off again.

I agree with Davey, 100%.

However, I think it's silly to stay "RAPE JOKES ARE HORRIBLY WRONG, but man AIDS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!" Yeah, let's all laugh at terminal illnesses! Let's laugh at the Holocaust! But fuck, rape? Not funny, dude. Not funny.

Basically, this thread should die, and people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones/let he who is without sin cast the first stone/I am pretty sure most/everybody on this board(given the sarcastic humor often found here) has made an offensive joke at one point in time. Maybe you thought it was funny, but maybe you offended someone else. Understand?

I'm not perfect. I'm aware I'm not perfect. I never said I was, and I never said I even want to be. I'm just saying that it pisses people off. When was the last time I made a joke about AIDS on here? I remember making a joke about Kurt Cobain recently, and I got called out for it. While I bitched about it to the person in the thread (and while we discussed it via PM for a while), I stopped within the next day, and I've toned down my use of that kind of humor considerably ever since, because it pissed one person off.

Just because I don't necessarily have room to talk doesn't mean I don't have the right to. I'm not the only one it pisses off/annoys/offends, and if people are going to cry on their pillow about it when I make them aware of it, well, that's their own damned problem. There's obsessive, baseless political correctness, and then there's just common fucking courtesy to the people around you.

While we're making Bible references in an effort to show off our moral e-penises, consider this one:

There is a time for everything,
And a season for every activity under heaven

While that kind of shit is acceptable on one of the *chans, it has no place here, and I am not even close to the first person to say it.

Whoa whoa whoa.

I'm not saying "You, KimJonSick, are a jerk! You make offensive posts all the time! Don't tell other people they can't!" I'm saying, as a board, we shouldn't say "This topic is officially banned from jokes! It is offensive!" You see what I'm saying? Jokes that are offensive suck, but we are all mostly adults here. I think we can handle a little bit of cringing every now and then, right?

I wasn't meaning to directly offend anyone. And with the "bible quote," I wasn't trying to be all "morally superior." I was just saying, "Hey, we are all jerkoffs. Maybe we shouldn't be so concerned with one little not so great topic."

Rape isn't something I find funny on general principles.  I'm contrarian enough of a person though that this thread genuinely makes me want a thread devoted to rape jokes, just to see if we could find one I do think is funny.  After all, I enjoy dead baby jokes and I think George Carlin's bit on suicide (from his Life is Worth Losing special) is comedy gold, so perhaps rape could be potentially be funny as well.  I have trouble understanding why this ONE area should be off limits to humor, no matter how offensive it is (and I agree that it is incredibly offensive).

Barring that, a new joke thread that didn't contain rape jokes might also be nice, since it's been three and a half months since the last post in the last joke thread I could find via search, and significantly longer than that since the last joke thread not dedicated specifically to BAD jokes...

Nope.

Also, Patrick, you probably know my opinion of religion (it's negative. Very negative.) but seriously, the bible is pretty much where so many of our little sayings, phrases, axioms or idioms or whatever you want to call them are from. Emaline wasn't really doing anything wrong by quoting the bible. If she was being incredibly sanctimonious or preachy than I'd be all up in arms about it as well but you know, just chill a little.

Bad, horrible thing I once said that makes me look like a terrible person story alert!  :police:

I once had a friend who always seemed to hit on/get hit on by younger girl(15-17 year olds, while he was 22). We once we driving past a Catholic elementary school, right as school was letting out. I said "Damn, we should come here more often! You could pick up so many girls!" It was a terrible joke, and I am a horrible person for it. But still to this day, that story makes me giggle.

My Bible quote is all kinds of relevant here though. 4chan is perfectly accepting of just about anything you can throw at them (with one exception: child porn). The rest of the world isn't 4chan though. You can shout racial slurs and rape jokes at a group of /b/tards as much as you want, but the rest of the world ain't so forgiving.

Well, on the theory that if my favorite comedian can't make me laugh about something I probably have no chance of ever finding it funny, I just listened to George Carlin's "Rape Can Be Funny" track off his 2007 album "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics".  Overall it was an unimpressive track, and unlike most of the time I'm listening to Carlin, I didn't particularly enjoy it.  I have to admit, though, that there was one point when I laughed pretty hard, and two or three other times when he got a small chuckle out of me.  I don't know, I think it's incredibly rare for a joke about rape to be funny, certainly rare enough that it's reasonable to say "Don't ever try, your odds of failing miserably and being offensive with no redeeming factors are too high."  Certainly on a forum like this I think avoiding rape jokes is a very good policy.  I bristle at the idea that rape can "never" be funny though, because I think anything *can* be funny, and I hate absolute statements about anything.  Also I did just laugh at a joke about rape a few minutes ago (thanks George), so there you have it.  Rape can be funny in my opinion, and I suspect that for most people there probably exists *some* joke about rape that would make them laugh.  Does that mean I plan on making rape jokes here?  No.  And neither should you.

Now that I've said my piece, I will join the chorus of people clamoring uselessly for this thread to die.

Why does 4chan keep getting brought up in this?

I agree that 4chan is a terrible terrible(albeit sometimes amusing) place. I mean, I realize that 4chan is basically all that is bad about the internet, and that a lot of what is said there can't/shouldn't be said anywhere else, and I'm glad it's that way. I think most people feel that way.  But why the hell do we keep bringing it up here? What does 4chan have to do with the qc boards? How many people here actually go to 4chan? How many people here are actually silly enough to treat other boards like 4chan?

I am still not certain why people think it is not ok to joke about rape but it is okay to joke about murder. How about sexual assaults that don't involve rape? How about beating the living shit out of a child for your own amusement? To say that one thing  is definately, universally not ok to joke about, but that everything else can be arguably used for humour is fucking ridiculous.

Also Khar, apparently fear of Clowns is far more commonplace than I thought. This leads me to believe that maybe the only reason we find raping a clown so gosh darn hilarious is deep down, we know that they're coming for us.

Right, I'm finding my original quote so that we can put this fucker to rest once and for all.

Here's the conversation that sparked this Goddamn mess, with a breakdown so everyone will understand where the hell this came from, know where the line is and then we won't have this conversation again, at least for a very long time.

Maybe that's why I never get laid without the aid of roofies and duct tape.

Okay. Rookie mistake here! He makes a joke, but the joke is basically an implication that he is a rapist or possibly a serial rapist. It's one thing to make a joke like that comic up there, but it's another thing to say "I've raped before and God dammit I'll do it again."

It is not okay to suggest you have raped a woman.

I have excised a quote, the gist of which is that context, audience and intent are crucial to a joke, and so is humour - there has to be something to a joke beyond shock value. What I've quoted, however, should be a line that folks know not to cross. Jokes are jokes, and at a certain point they stop being jokes.

Who said anything about a woman?

That's a joke. Unfortunately the timing is not great. This is a situation where the best thing to do is maybe apologize or just make a mental note not to go to that particular place that particular way again.

It is not okay to suggest you have raped anyone.

Really, it's not.

Folks, and I shouldn't have to remind you about this, this is the Internet. It's not necessarily Serious Business but the fact is that you're not talking to us, you're typing to us. Something is bound to get lost in the translation, and sometimes it's humour or intent. I genuinely doubt CPC was intending to make light of rape victims or to offend anyone, and outside of those two posts he's a pretty good forumite. I feel a need to stress this, since this probably feels like a personal attack or something blown way, way out of proportion to him, and he doesn't deserve it. (To be honest, it should have been taken to a PM in the first place; at best, being in a thread simply leaves it visible as a reminder that it's important to consider that there are people typing out their responses to what you write.)

It was a joke. In the right context, maybe it would have worked. However, it came significantly out of left field, it wasn't phrased great and the intention behind it seemed misguided at best and outright malicious at worst.

Everyone makes mistakes. The best thing we can do is learn from them, not draw attention to them and turn them into gigantic forum-renders. (And yes, I'm aware I've done that here and it might make me come across like a huge hypocrite but, once again, context is important. For anyone scratching their heads at this thread's proceedings I'm guessing that's doubly true.)

Even though this isn't my thread, I'd like the mods to have their say and then maybe to close this sucker up. Be excellent to one another. That's the important part.

I clicked the "edit" button here to clear things up now that it's twelve hours later and a reasonable time of day without bumping this thread up again. First, it's not relevant whether or not it's easier to just let comments like that slide. The relative ease of a course of action is at best one merit out of many. Letting it slide means this thread doesn't get made, there's no big production over its seriousness - definite pro. It also means that stuff like that is acceptable to say on this forum, which is generally founded on civility - even crude jokes generally have an understanding of the implications behind them, which is largely what makes them funny - and, although Amok's right in that nobody reading probably thought he was actually a rapist, it basically Weekend Webs the forum, taking what is at its core a pretty great community and sleazing it up a bit (once again, unintentionally). So those are a couple of cons.

Nobody's suggesting setting up a ruleset. Harry has kindly asked people to refrain from relying on violence towards your fellow man being used as a cheap joke. I'm suggesting that folks be wary of the context of their jokes and understand the implicit meaning behind their own words. TL;DR version: read what you type before posting it and make sure those are the words you want to say to a group of people. You have the opportunity to do so on a web forum, and that's one of its perks.

Shut up! For the love of god, can someone please lock this thread already? I am so sick of everyone repeating themselves over and over and over. Everyone has made excellent points! People have acknowledged them and made their own excellent arguments! The first people then repeat themselves and then we are just going around in circles!

I don't see this happening. In fact, neither amok nor myself have posted in this thread actually discussing the topic at hand.

Or, since the chances of any post which if taken literally could be read to advocate rape being serious are utterly insignificantly low, we can probably be mature about it and take any posts about rape with a pinch of salt and just scroll past them if we personally find the topic too offensive to ever be funny, instead of preaching and writing essays about it. Because while your summary of that post is thorough and rational, it's probably a lot easier to just let it slide rather than subject every off-colour sarcastic remark to in-depth analysis.

Basically,

Quote
Okay. Rookie mistake here! He makes a joke, but the joke is basically an implication that he is a rapist or possibly a serial rapist. It's one thing to make a joke like that comic up there, but it's another thing to say "I've raped before and God dammit I'll do it again."

No, it really isn't another thing. Because no one reading that is actually thinking that he's a rapist or possibly a serial rapist or he's raped before and God dammit he'll do it again. The only difference between this and an 'acceptable' joke is that you don't find it funny. There are lots of things that everyone doesn't find funny, and if we set up a ruleset forbidding any of these things being joked about ever we'd pretty much just be discussing Neutral Milk Hotel and the weather 24/7.

As you say, if the mods want to put their foot down and say 'we don't find rape funny therefore shut up' that's different because uh, they have stars under their names and shit. But while it's still being debated, this basically makes no sense whatsoever (the thread in general, not just your post JC).
