No metal, and yet they have two reggaes, a jazz, and a jazz fusion.

You'd think metal would get a station before hardcore punk.

Maybe they didn't approach / were not approached by a metal label, but then they mostly seem to deal with majors, so you'd think there would be at least some shitty metal on there. Looks like there's some good old metal in the classic rock station (good call on Heaven and Hell). I guess Rockstar bought into the whole "alternative rock is the new classic rock" idea, considering the REM and Pumpkins in the Classic Rock station.

Awhile back I had read about labels switching out the in-game soundtrack periodically via the internets, but who knows if that has any chance of ever actually happening.

Anyway, none of that really matters. You are going to do the same thing everyone else does - listen to the in-game radio stations for the commercials and commentary, and once you've exhausted those, switch over full-time to custom soundtrack.

I've also heard that a number of those songs have actually been rerecorded, so that references to NYC are changed to references to Liberty City. If true, that is balls-out.

Anyone else with Xbox Live feel like getting together for some free roam sometime this week? It is very difficult finding good people on the Internets.

I pretty excited to go pick this up today after work, i couldn't stay up late enough to do a 12:00 release, plus thats when the really wacko people come out. I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't get robbed then carjacked for their copy of GTA. How ironic that would be

I may be available Friday after 5 PM EST.  I will probably be playing this by 9PM EST, until 12-1AM Saturday.  I can't pick it up until around 5 or 6 tonight, and if I'm playing, it's gonna be Single Player for a little bit.  Maybe after 10pm EST.  And the weekend, definitely.

So.  Within the first hour, I killed three loan sharks, took a girl bowling, and watched TV.  Their TV is fucking awesome.  It's not even real, and I like it even more than real TV.  They even have a fake HISTORY CHANNEL.

And then I played free mode and did some ramps at the airport with a motorcycle, and again with a chopper (that didn't go so well).

GUYS I CAME.

I got the game and I'm actually loving the shit out of it.  So far it's fixed damn near every single gameplay problem I ever had since 3 and I genuinely like Niko and several of the other characters Job characters.

Haven't even touched online yet, but the single player is great.

Well, I sat down last night around 4pm, with my usual 2 mountain dew's and an apple as a snack. Well i turned to look at the clock and it was almost 1:30 am in a blink of an eye, yet my snacks went untouched as i was drawn to the screen of my television.

All i have to say is HOLY SHIT... i played for a solid 9-10 hours, my brain even turned off my bladder, because the second i stood up to pack away my system i had to piss really really bad.

Everything about this game is great, i have not played a game like this, ever, period. Even previous iterations of GTA have never left me feeling this way. I know its only a game, but seriously after running through the city with 10 of my XBL friends was pure chaos, the story is flawless, and the voice acting is impeccable. The graphics straight up blew my mind . This is a definite buy if you are into this sort of game.

i did not know you could fly out of your car when you wreck.

i was pleasantly surprised. actually, that's an understatement. I WAS FUCKING STOKED.
also, drunk driving is pretty sweet because it's absolutely impossible to play it off like you're not wasted.

first two things i did when i gained control of Niko were as follows: wandered into an alley, picked a fight with a bum, and got my ass kicked; then i tried to go onto one of the bridges without realizing it and before i knew it i had a full wanted level and the cops shot me to death.

does anyone know if you can fire rocket launchers while driving motorcycles? i'd really like to play a motorcycles and rocket launchers death match.

drive your car very fast into something low and solid just once and you'll be hooked. seriously. watching Niko fly face first out the windshield and tumble down the street (possibly into other moving vehicles) is so satisfying.

I totally agree with whoever said that releasing this during finals was a bad idea.  I've got three projects due by the end of next week, and I can't stop thinking about playing.  FUCK.

Resisting the temptation to play is damn near impossible.  I've already decided that I'm gonna play this all day Saturday, projects or no.  Hopefully I can finish two of them by the end of the week (I probably will, but they're programming-related, so I may have to debug).

Seriously though, it's putting a knot in my stomach.

The added dynamism to the missions is nice. For example, early in the game you can date a girl, and the first time you're on your way to pick her up your cousin calls, as he is getting beat up by thugs. Seeing as Roman is a bum, I left him to his fate and went on the date. After the date Roman calls and you get into an argument about your putting "cooch over cousins", and you have to pick him up from the hospital (later, after a strip club visit with Roman, I crashed the motorcycle we were riding and had to pick Roman up from the hospital again). I went on another date that did not go well and in a pre-mission cutscene I was grilled by Roman over how it went, and I was evasive about it. I don't know if doing things differently results in huge differences, but the way the game flows feels really natural. Also, the lines between side missions and main storyline missions is blurry. At this stage, though, everything feels like a side-mission.

A little miffed at the apparent lack of custom soundtracks.

yeah, it's pretty interesting how you can choose which things to do or not. to continue using the example you did; i went on the date and told Roman to piss off and of course he called me later and was all "thanks jerk. i had to take a shitty bus home from the hospital because the thugs YOU beat up kicked my ass." but the chick was stoked on me. then my 360 froze before i could save it so i had to do it all again but i decided to help Roman instead and ignore the girl, so i kicked a bunch of ass for Roman then we got drunk and crashed his car. then later the girl called me back anyway and was all "so how about that date we were supposed to go on?" and we went bowling.

also; what are everyones thoughts on the multiplayer? i've only played about two or three deathmatches that weren't even full, but they were alot of fun. you really feel up to no good skulking around a busy city with an AK-47. it's pretty intense when you're in the middle of a fire fight and then someone just comes out of nowhere and runs you over with Hummer. or, for example, you kill one of your opponents and you're thinking "yeah, alright. i rule." but then cops start telling you to "freeze" and "put the gun down" and all this and you have to either kill them and draw more heat, or try to escape the police all the while trying to fight through your human opponents.
it's definitely a whole new kind of multiplayer experience that i'm really excited to delve deeper into.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

It should be my breath that is smelling like American titty!

Writing in this game leans heavily towards the razor-sharp.

Incidentally, it doesn't hurt to cancel plans with others now and again. Little Jacob needed me to go do something so I canceled a strip club date with Roman.

It's not like playing that mission is gonna make people think that driving drunk is a good idea.

if anything, it will make them realize that it's not a good idea at all.

as soon as i got in the car it started swerving madly across both lanes, hitting cars and people as i went. the cops caught on pretty quick and they were mad.

Yeah... driving drunk is hard.  If anything, the game makes it look harder to drive drunk than it actually is.  MADD should get their heads out and encourage the game.

My thoughts so far:

-Euphoria is much, much more amazing than I had originally supposed. Watching Niko be brushed by a car for the first time was the only thing I needed to see to demand this be implemented in every video game ever.

-I take back all I said about the music, because it is amazing. Electrochoc and Radio Broker are personal favorites (and if you frequent the music forum, Broker manages to pin us pretty well).

-Driving is phenomenal.

-I finally give a shit about the characters. I'm still figuring Niko out, but it's generally fun to see how he's wrangled into each mission, whether it be loyalty, money, friendship...

-Multiplayer is fantastic! Free roam is loads of fun.

Video games are one thing that people who don't play video games think they know all about, but really don't, which is why stories like this get exposure in the first place.

Also, the game is already rated "M". I mean, you can go to a strip club and get three lap dances in a row before Niko gets tired of them.

Multiplayer is far more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Also, if you 100% the game before Monday, you get a key to LibCity.

Like... an actual key or something? Because the achievement doesn't specify "by Monday."

Anyways, the TV is pretty funny. There's a history of Liberty City (aka New Rotterdam) which shows how heavily the city's founding was reliant on ye olde pornographies and gang violence against "the savages." Also I saw an advertisement for the Cluckin' Bell, an in-game restaurant chain, that advertised the core menu item as a whole chicken stuffed with potatoes, gravy and an entire cob of corn, then deep-fried. I HAVE MADE NIKO EAT THERE, WHAT HAVE I DONE

I just fucking love the writing in this game.

From a couple passersby: "So I can snort meth in a bar, but I can't smoke inside?".
Whilst boning a friend: "Oh! You're so GOOD! Tell me interesting things!".
Commercial about the 9-bladed razor: "If you have a beard you're either a pedophile or a hobo with scars on his face from tossing salad in the joint."

Edit:  Is my postcount the result of some new filter?  It's not a number.

"OH! You're SPECIAL! You're so SPECIAL!"

Also, Rockstar is giving away actual, physical keys. Shipped to your house, etc. Social Club is actually kind of boring. Not much to do.

I have found the coolest thing in the history of the universe.

I felt really bad about all the killing I had to do to complete some missions, until I discovered that most of the bad-guys I'm putting down aren't dead. They just roll around on the ground, clutching their sides in pain. If you free-aim over them, Niko will say something like "Don't get up". You can choose at that point to put a bullet in their head or not.

Awesooooome.
