Load and reload to me seemed like good ideas with bad execution. That is just from what I have heard off of them, I haven't listened to them all the way through. The songs weren't well-made, there is nothing wrong with the style of music, they just wrote shittily for it.

Immolation are American, are they not?

Yes, they are, but that wasnt really the point, Cannibal Corpse did spawn a lot of imitators, for sure, but at least they spawned imitators that could play notes on their instruments.  In the 90s, it seemed like Immolation clones were everywhere, many of the local bands here in Baltimore that called themselves death metal, were merely a bunch of guys with half-octave downtuning who played three notes and grunted for 4 and a half minutes and called it a song.

I did enjoy Load / Re-Load

...wait, WHAT?

Thanks for reading the whole sentence.  If you notice, I said I enjoy listening to the blues, Load and ReLoad were heavily blues influenced in their sound, so I found something I liked in them.  OH NOES I LIKED THEIR ALBUMS (with the exception of that one song).

Was it the "same" as Metallica of days past?  No, not really.  But then, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets werent the same as Kill Em All, Justice wasnt the same as Ride or Puppets, and the Black Album was different from everything previous too.

Seriously, is it so hard to accept that bands change and grow up?  That the musicians, listening to other types of music might have an impact on where they go with their sound?  What era would you prefer their sound to stay at?  Kill Em All?  Ride and Puppets?  Justice?  Black Album?  Not every band can be Hatebreed and release the same 12 songs on every single album for 15 years.

Statik, you listen to Down or CoC? Those both have a good amount of blues in them.

I love Down, I unfortunantly missed them the last time they came through Baltimore

CoC (I assume you mean Corrosion of Conformity) Im not that big on, but from what of theirs Ive heard, its not bad music, just me being picky.

Yeah, that is who I meant. I haven't seen either of them live, as I only discovered them not even six months ago.

I really like the In the Arms of God album CoC has out, have you heard that one? I think it has to be the best one they put out, not sure how I would rate it in comparison to donw, though.

I have absolutely no objection to bands evolving and changing their style. A lot of my favourite bands, both inside and outside of metal, changed drastically over the years, or did experiments in other genres: Ulver, Skyclad, Burzum, Coil, Current 93, Death in June, Ewigkeit, Borknagar, Swans: all bands where you couldn't really imagine the last album from listening to the first.

No, what I object to, specifically, is bands just becoming shit. Metallica didn't evolve. They ran out of ideas and energy.

Also, statik, I'll begrudge you your point. If DM bands were going to talentlessly copy anyone though, I'd rather they stuck to Carcass.

I wonder if "Opeth" can classify as a change, they went form outright Death Metal into a Melodic band (Their recent album Ghost Reveries a love child of Damnation and Deliverance.)

So just to provide, heres a list of some "Labelled" metal songs, over a small variety, enjoy.

Death metal
Torture killer  -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwt72dWQQEY&feature=related
and
Bolt thrower -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrJwXpNlsn8

Simple heavy riffs Drop D and Drop C respectively, quite easy to copy if you can pick out the riffs.

Melodic/ Gothic metal.
Orphaned land -   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQGd10MzDv8
Draconian -   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAO6qMqjFNs
Inmost Ego - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=255109937

Doom Metal
My Dying Bride - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIAWRoHqUK8
Assorted, but bloody awesome - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1-TiY3sCws

Power metal
Lost Horizon -   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcQSs91usK8

Drinking metal
Korpiklaani -   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3ZhkLUcKT8

Spongebob metal

Alright I'll stop.

You forgot Lawnmower metal.

Also, if you were going to dub anything 'Drinking Metal' I would choose Tankard.

Man, there was a whole thread talking about all the random ass genres we didn't think existed, and Khar found a band for almost all of them.

Well, technically Finntroll would probably fall under the "Folk Metal" category of such things, but whatever.

Yeah, and Tankard and Lawnmower Deth are both thrash, but making up silly genres is infinitely more fun.

THATS A GWAR!... Awesome I approve.

There is something.. disturbing about GWAR but, addictive, I mean they don't take themselves AT ALL seriously, which is probably why I like them. (Walk around Central perk in latex outfits, playing basketball with jesus and giving food poisoning to hundreds of fans...).

Oh, how about I set a challenge then, who can find a band that goes under this name.

Lollypop Metal I can't do...but I once labeled a noise track I was working on as "ambient black metal".

My metal listening career just started recently with the television show "Metalocalypse" when the awesomeness of the sound of metal was introduced to me in a consumer friendly package. Before then I just usually listened to stuff that I heard on the radio. Stuff like System of a Down, Coldplay, David Bowie, Gorillaz, and other such stuff. A pretty eclectic mix of stuff, but it was starting to to get stale. A friend of mine had a hard drive with a large amount of music on it, and a lot of it turned out to be metal. I proceeded to rip everything and go through and sort it.

Here's the stuff I turned up with:
As I Lay Dying (Heard them before, like them well enough)
The Black Dahlia Murder (Don't think I'm into that)
Children of Bodom (Listening to it right now, it's pretty awesome)
Chimaira
Coal Chamber
Cradle of Filth (Don't know if they count)
Damage Plan
Death Angel
Dethklok (They may be just for a show, but damn if I don't enjoy their music)
Drowning Pool
Fear Factory
Iced Earth
In Flames (Listened to a little of this, don't think I like it)
Lamb of God
Pantera
Slayer (Ungodly amounts of it, too)
Stabbing Westward
Type O Negative
Unearth (Listened and Enjoyed muchly)

So, do you guys have anything to suggest to further expand my learnings?

Cursed: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Testament. Testament is the most similar thrash band I can think of to death angel, and the other three are just required listening.

edit: Oh, and am I right in assuming that at least some people here like Katatonia? I have only heard Brave Murder Day and Discouraged Ones, but I really like them.

I'll get on downloading those bands. I actually think there was some Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest on that hard drive I ripped from, so I can go back and grab those.

And I've been meaning to pick up some Amon Amarth because I've heard good stuff about them.

Amon Amarth is one of the better "viking metal" bands.  I would reccomend "Fate of Norns" and "With Oden on our Side" if you want a newer, more produced sound (plus the songs are fuckin amazing, so that helps)

As far as Katatonia, Ive listened to them, I have even seen them once, but I could never really get in to them all that much.

Go for any of the first four albums for Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4), not sure what to recommend for Judas Priest, I like Screaming For Vengeance personally, but I don't have much from them. Iron maiden I would go with Number of the beast, Powerslave, Piece of mind, or Fear of the Dark. I have only heard Death Angel's two most recent albums, The Art of Dying and Killing season.

Katatonia-wise, I don't like them as much as Agalloch, but you can really see the influence of the former on the latter, and the song "Day" is just awesome, the melancholy feel is overpowering.

Yeah, I think at the time I had a hard time getting in to them when I was already running Opeth, Moonspell, Sentenced, Tiamat, and Theatre of Tragedy in heavy rotation on my CD players.  I just didnt want another "depressing" band at the time I suppose.

I don't think lyrical content is the most important part.  AFAIK, the two things all BM bands have in common is tremolo picking and blast beats.

I take it you meant viking metal by the first post...

Yeah, I've always had a problem with calling Amon Amarth 'Viking Metal' as to me that suggests Bathory, Moonsorrow, Falkenbach, Tyr, Forefather, Einherjer, Windir, Folkearth, Glittertind, Kampfar, Enslaved, Mithotyn... A pretty diverse range, but as a death metal group Amon Amarth really does stick out like a sore thumb.

Viking Metal seems to have no real basis in a style of music.  Merely something that describes what they will be singing (growling) about.

Folk metal, however, does imply a certain style, or at the very least you can "expect" certain things from it.

Same with black metal, death metal (although death metal has become incredibly diverse in the past ten years in its own right), etc.

There is no band that defines "viking metal" as it isnt truly a genre.

Wait, scratch that.  TYR is the embodiment of "Viking Metal" and while many other bands can rightfully be called "viking metal" for playing heavy metal and singing about viking escapades.  IMO, Tyr is nothing else.  Amon Amarth, Viking Death Metal.  Folkearth: Viking Folk Metal.  And so on and so forth.  It helps that Tyr is forged of awsome by the hammer of excellence (and Thor).

I think you just implied that Pantera was better than Death Angel.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY AGAIN?

I think the real issue here is that I implied Children Of Bodom are better than Death Angel.

Yeah... And Lamb of God. Maybe I have just heard their shitty stuff, but seriously. Omerta. How could you say that Death angel and TON are worse than both of those?

I can understand subjective opinions about CoB and ToN.

But Pantera > Death Angel is just objectively wrong.

I like N'Sync, Backstreet boys, 98degrees, Five, and Aaron Carter!

The joke here is that these bands are not metal at all

There is no band that defines "viking metal" as it isnt truly a genre.

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

One: Tyr takes the win for defining "pure" viking metal.  Bathory, no matter how awsome, does not.

Two: I forgot what my second point was...  Im drunk, whatever.  Refer to point one.

Not that it matters - Blind Guardian kicks the everliving shit out of both of them*.

So what, inventing a whole genre is not good enough now?

Tyr are following Bathory's legacy, no matter what. Also, Moonsorrow. Also,

This seems like the best place to ask this question:
(Keep in mind, before reading the question, this is not a "I know this band and no one else does that makes me cool" question)

Has anyone listened to Kreator?
I never see Kreator on anyone's damn lists of metal bands. I was introduced to them a few years back and they're a ****ing kickass band, but other than the person who introduced them to me, I have yet to talk to someone who's heard of them.
