Author Topic: Can anyone suggest the next step in my musical quest?  (Read 16664 times)

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good artists, I'm at somewhat of a loss as to what to listen to next.

I really like Tool and most of the stuff by Maynard Keenan, but unfortunately the sites I usually go to for similarities such as Pandora or Slacker label those bands as Progressive Rock only and keep giving me songs that involve nineteen minutes of some guy hitting a triangle at irregular intervals...

What I'm really looking for is something melodic yet hardcore, drums guitar vocals bass synth I like it all to be honest...Ashes Divide has recently become a new favorite.

If anybody could point out some good artists I might be missing, that'd be awesome, and even if its not like I described please refer it anyway!  My tastes are wide and varied (I am known to be an avid fan of Russian Disco!)

Gracias!

That's great guys, keep em coming!

I thought Mastodon and sigh were a bit too extreme at first, but I did rather like them just the same.

Devin Townsend, you meant the Devin Townsend Band, cause I dont see anything besides that and Strapping Young Lad.

And I'm sorry, but I don't understand Hella at all.  If I listened to the right band, There's no 666 in outer space is quite frankly just noise.

What exactly is it you like about tool? Is it the vocals, or the musicianship?

Because if it's the vocals you like you're probably better off going down an alternative "metal" route, whereas if its the musicianship it's probably more a prog metal type thing.

Maybe try Cog? They're pretty similar all round, albeit a bit softer and more progressive.

[EDIT - Try Baroness and Minsk, too. ]

I can't really describe exactly why I like Tool so much, but if I had to pick I'd say it was because of the melodic mixtures instrumentally coupled with the vocals, but focusing more on the instrumental nature of them.  Ironically, the vocals are one of the main reasons I like Ashes Divide as much as I do.

Cog and Baroness were just about dead on, I'm liking what I hear, downloading Sharing Space and Red Album as we speak.  I'm still undecided on Minsk, not quite sure what to make of them.  It's certainly interesting, I'll grant that.

I found Cynic worth listening to, no, the vocals aren't gay =P

keep em comin, if you please! =)

Heh, yeah Minsk was a bit of a stretch. I just like to advertise them where possible, because I love them.

Perhaps Karnivool would be up your alley, too. It's kind of alternative/prog, like Tool.

The End might be a good idea, sometimes they remind me of Tool a little. Mainly you should be listening to Magma though, since Magma are one of the best things ever and definitely the best prog of all time. Get Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh in your life, you'll be better for it.

I found The End a far too hardcore, though it's possible I just stumbled upon those few songs...I couldn't see any similarities to Tool at all in the songs I heard, I already forgot which ones they were, but they were from the album with the farmhouse/shack on the cover.

Magma wasn't exactly my cup of tea...I couldn't really explain why I didn't like it...I just didn't...makes sense in a stupid kind of way, doesn't it?

Lungfish I found rather compelling, but I can't say it struck me like Tool did when I first listened to them, or Cog and Karnivool did yesterday.

Try Russian Circles.  They opened for Tool rrecently in Europe.  It's really powerful instrumental stuff. Their drummer, Dave, is a helluva nice guy and the smoking-est drummer ever.

Also, if you like the Perfect Circle stuff, you may really like Failure's "Fantastic Planet," they share some members.  If this does it for ya, try some Hum, also.

Maybe you would like Katatonia if you're more into the "metal" side of Tool.

Russian Circles is more post-rock but if you don't mind that their stuff is really ace! Their new album will probably interest you. It's in the mediafire thread. Just search Russian Circles or Stations.

High on fire? Isis? I find that if I'm in a tool mood, I'm in an isis mood, and I think isis is the better of the two, which is why I rarely listen to tool.

If you like insane technicality coupled with nice melodic sensibility then... Between the Buried and Me?

Have you listened to any of the bands that Tool has named as big influences on their music? Specifically, Meshuggah or King Crimson.

Another band that I find a lot of Tool fans seem to like despite having very different sounds is Dredg, one of my favorite groups. Other bands that Tool fans seem to enjoy include NIN, Deftones, etc.

Also, Billy Howerdel of APC just released an album like a week ago with his new band, Ashes Divide. Haven't heard any of it yet, so I don't know if it's any good.

I'd also second the Isis vote, and maybe add Pelican or Rosetta as well. Hmm... Opeth maybe? or Porcupine tree? Tool fans seem to enjoy them a fair amount too.

I gave Isis, Between the Buried and Me, and High on Fire a listen, and I found them too metal for my tastes.  Too much thrash, not enough melody imho.

I thought Meshuggah had a similar issue, and King Crimson didn't really resound with me.

Porcupine tree and Russian Circles I thought were quite cool. <--- More like this! =)

Ashes Divide's new album Just Keep Telling Myself It's Alright I thought was great, it's a lot more mellow than say, Tool or APC, which maybe is why I liked it to much.

Thanks for all the suggestions, so far I've found very much to my liking:

Baroness
Cog
Karnivool
Pocupine Tree
Russian Circles
Dredg

I think that I don't like Tool for its metal qualities, but rather for its melodic and progressive rock qualities, I'm actually not a big fan of metal.

Catch Without Arms is their most recent disc, and it's kinda different from their other two. A bit more mainstream of a sound, with really good catchy tunes. The other two (Leitmotif and El Cielo) are more, i dunno, experimental or artsy I guess. El Cielo and Leitmotif are definitely my favorites, but Catch Without Arms is still damn good.

Mediafire's pretty easy to figure out, you just upload a file to it and then people can download it from the link they give you. All you really need is winRAR for unzipping the files.

It's in the mediaf!re thread I'm assuming?

Hey there, This might be coming out of the completely wrong direction, but I recommend it to everyone, definitely fits the melodic-but-hard category:

Pixies, particularly Surfer Rosa

Well known band, but often overlooked in favour of newer stuff. Guess i'm just a retrophile

Thanks, I have some stuff by the Pixies =)

And though I did start off this post asking for Tool-oriented stuff, I would like to say that I only did that because Tool is the only band I consistently am a huge fan of, other bands can be hit-or-miss.

So don't neglect putting up something that differs from Tool, case in point, I was looking through the MediaF!re thread and got the new Islands Album, which I really liked, and that's not like Tool at all.

So really, anything you think is good, I'll listen to anything once.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far =)

P.S. I'm getting a Best Of compilation of Type O Negative, thanks for suggesting it.

While we are recommending Australian bands that are pretty derivative of Tool in a lot of ways but are still pretty ok (we have a lot of them, especially in Brisbane for some reason)

Dead Letter Circus

never

Nucleus

If you like Never's stuff on their myspace I can upload their EP for you to have a listen to, I lost Nucleus' EP about five minutes after I bought it and I'm not really enough of a DLC fan to bother buying their album.

Incidentally Karnivool are exceptionally rad.

I would suggest getting the Least Worst Of compilation rather than the best of, I am not sure which I really like better, but the best of was made by Roadrunner without TON's approval, I think they were even off of the label when it was made. Don't know how roadrunner didn't get sued to hell and back.

As should be recommended to any Tool fan, I am first going to recommend Om. They are kind of like Tool, but better.

Also, I cannot recommend Raped! by Dolphins enough as of late. Their recent self titled album was probably the best unrecognized album of the last year.

Karnivool are exceptionally rad.  And so far I have noticed that Australian music kicks ass.

I liked Nucleus quite a bit, but I can't find it anywhere :( I keep getting some records from the late 70's, by a different band.  Is there somewhere you know of that I could potentially download it?  Paid or otherwise?  Dead Letter Circus was cool, found them.  Can't say I liked Never too much...

I couldn't find Om, can you link something?

I also can't find the Dolphins album...all of my searches result in the same video of the guy being humped by a dolphin.

they are hard to find on torrentz or limewire unless you know the album names. http://www.myspace.com/3 has a bunch of their songs, try listening to the first one all the way through, it combines two songs in one.
