i really, really miss playing pokemon.  i lent someone my nintendo ds & pokemon games about a year ago and they never gave it back.  i don't know if i'll ever see it again   this thread makes me want to go and re-buy everything.  (although i guess the ds is outdated now.  what is the newest newfangled nintendo hand held gaming system anyways?)

edit:  the only reason i bought a gameboy was because i wanted to play pokemon.  i've owned a couple gameboys & the ds since then, but the only games i've ever had have been pokemon ones: red, blue, yellow, silver, sapphire and ruby.  i am a great big pokemon dork and does anyone know if you can buy the pokemon seasons on dvd?  because i would probably buy them and watch them all.

I will add though, that my first Pokemon game was Blue, when it came out, so, y'know, I've played it for a while too. It's only 10 years old or so, I'm sure tons of us remember the original graphics (and original designs, Pikachu was ugly.)

I remember playing the card game when I was about ten, but I didn't play the gameboy game until maybe last year. My brother still plays it when he's bored, and I think he's got all my cards and all of his too.

At primary school everyone was mad for Pokemon cards, and we had an ofsted inspection coming up so our head teacher went round confiscating cards. I remember in the lunch line one day she actually ripped up a boy's set because she was so stressed. It seemed like a crime at the time (actually I suppose it techinically was. A sin then).

I drew fanart, for heaven's sake. Fanart from the orginal Gameboy graphics.

Uh, you're not the only one Lunchy, I drew fan art from both the game and cards. And I played it on my clunky ass b/w screen grey-bodied Gameboy, but dammit I liked it.

Actually, I bet if I got some AA batteries, the thing would still work. But I think I'd play more Tetris than anything else. And Pokemon Pinball. Pokemon Pinball is so much fun...

See, way way way back in the grey haze of my memories, I remember distinctly that in the time of the first game boy colours, after a full six months' begging, I was given one for christmas. My parents being my parents, it was decreed that I was allowed to choose only one game, and it boiled down to Pokemon Blue, or Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.

Nah, I think I actually still have my box of pokemon cards. I'd be intrigued to see how much they're worth. Probably absolutely nothing, contrary to what people were saying back in the day ("some day my holographic Blastoise will be worth so much money!")

I'd love to get a Pokemon Diamond, but honestly I don't have any spare money to spend on a new game system AND game. =/

There was a resurgence of Red/Blue (Old school...) Pokemon at my school recently, and I found my Red catridge, which had all 151 Pokemon on it, without cheating, only to discover that my demon sister had started and saved a new file. A little bit of me died inside.

And then, the last card in the pack is a Charizard. It was fucking amazing.

That is pretty cool.  Charizard was awesome.  Still blows away 99% of all those goofy new ones.

When our son was seven, my wife promised him that if he did really well at (some thing at school) she'd buy him a Charizard.  She of course had no idea what that meant.  It cost $40 at the local card shop.  The kid took it to school the next day to show it off, and lost it. 

Actually, there's probably a good chance that it was stolen.  Whatever.  We told him not to take it to school, though I'm sure he had no intention of listening to us (I know I wouldn't).  Having the card is not the cool thing, it's showing it off and making others jealous.

When I was little, I walked upwind, uphill, through the snow, in the cold northern taiga, to and from school. For real.

(We went to a babysitter after school and she was on the other side of the school. It was only like ten-fifteen minutes each way)

Man, speaking of procrastination, I've only just started on a paper for a Genre Theory and Criticism class that's due tomorrow night at 6:30pm. I've just finished up writing three pages of it, and since its about 3 I'm just about to pass out. Too bad I can't find a way to change my movie to one of the Pokemon movies and bullshit about why its a western and then provide an 8-10 page cultural analysis of it, because at least I would laugh while writing it.
