Of course. Except that Fox always tries to shroud its sensationalism and yellow journalism with a veneer of professionalism by putting a question mark after its outrageous proclamations, like "Obama: A Secret Homosexual Communist Muslim Abortionist?"

ALSO

In Chile, they call them pokEMOnes

'pokEMOnes' sounds great in a comedy hispanic accent.

It's the same as it ever was?

If you go back far enough, they blamed grunge at some point.  Go further and they blamed Black Sabbath, then comic books, cave paintings and so on.

And man, Dead Milkman always puts a smile on my face but I guess they have a song called "Life is Shit."

But they probably blamed Black Sabbath because Satan would caress gently the ground they trod on and lit their footsteps aflame.

I hope this isn't opening me up to ridicule, but as many of you know I spend a fair amount of time in Second Life. The other day I came across a hilarious novelty item someone was selling, called the "Emo Starter Kit." Basically it's an animation where your character slits their wrist and blood gushes out. The best part is the command you type to activate the animation: /wrist

You guys probably don't really want your lawns to be emo. Even if it would cut itself you'd have to put up with it listening to Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Seriously, fuck that.

Edited because this running gag, such as it is, is probably coming to an end.

I partake in both the metal and guitar'ing communities. A7X and their guitarists are a common source of conversion in both communities for numerous reasons.

The X is presumably there for two reasons

1. X IS FUCKING HARDCOEAR

2. "Somethingfold" is multiplied. So, I guess it's "Avenged Seven Times"? Thus A7X

Sorry to bring up a dying thread, but apparently, a whole bunch of emo kids are staging a protest outside the Daily Mail HQ this Sunday in response to this article.

Part of me wants to support the ethos that wants to make a great big protest against the hijacking of youth culture that seems to permeate the majority of those tat rags.

Another part of me wishes that they'd muster a large protest against something a little more valid, like their endless victimisation of anyone not able-bodied/white/middle class/heterosexual/dull as fuck and socially obtuse.

The biggest part of me, though, is trying really hard not to cringe at the thought of what this will look like. Somehow, I don't think that recreating some sort of version of Nights of the Living Dead outside the offices of a bunch of brainless numpties will do a lot to help the cause...

The other day, I read in a newspaper that an Australian study showed that post-traumatic stress disorder after active military duty in a war zone could be linked to the sense of smelling. The study was performed with a subject pool of thirty-one soldiers.

Yes, the media is fucking stupid.

Smell is believed by some to be the sense most linked to memory, so what is fucking stupid about this exactly?

Seriously though, I've gone through bouts of diagnosed clinical depression(with prescriptions for lexapro), and I've never had the urge to wear too much eyeliner, listen to My Chemical Romance, or wear jeans way too tight.

Basically, my biggest gripe with emo is how it belittles such a mental illness and turns it into little more than fashion.

Anecdotal evidence time:

I have two friends that are "emo". Case 1 can be called "Bob" and Case 2 can be called "Rob".

Bob is a dude I have known since my second year of high school. He was a good humoured, energetic dude and pretty well adjusted. Fast forward a few years and the change is pretty immense. I'm not even talking about losing some traits to gain others, I'm talking about a massive change. He's become really apathetic to everything. It pisses me off, because I'm trying to communicate and be friendly and all he seems capable of is responding in a disinterested, monotone voice that more or less says, "I am too good for you".
So basically Bob uses the "emo" scene as a platform for elitism.

Rob is much more friendly and stuff! I like him a lot better, because he's still fun to hang around and we get along really well. The thing is, though, he glamourises depression and suicide pretty heavily. He can't resist an opportunity to point out that he attempted suicide (can't confirm this), only ever sees death in his dreams (fat chance) and rolls up his sleeves a day after cutting himself so everyone can see. I am really not sure what Rob is trying to communicate here. That he is emo? Success, then.

Would I be fair in saying that members of the "emo" subculture generally use it as a means of confused subconscious expression with little conscious idea of what they're doing? Or am I full of shit?

I think most of them use it as a means of wearing some tight-fitting clothes while they listen to some pop music. People like dressing up, that's why glam and the new romantic thing worked. Same thing with these kids. I remember loads of kids cutting themselves, going on about death and suicide and all that when I was at high school in the '90s. There is nothing new here whatsoever, only now emo gets blamed instead of grunge, punk rock, video nasties, computer games or whatever other convenient scapegoat happens to be available.

The dude is saying that at one point the term "emo" did refer to a style of music, and still does when used correctly, but now also refers to a social subculture that is mainly defined by unattractive girls and effeminate boys trying to look like unattractive girls.

Also something of a pirate fixation with the way they style their hair into a makeshift eyepatch.

Ah, sorry I forgot the connecting part.

The term "punk" also refers to a style of music but also refers to a social subculture, one that is way too varied to describe (or at least, I'm too lazy to describe it) but includes things like mohawks, leather jackets and being kind of dirty (there's other stuff too but I'm being slightly irreverent).

I read Snalin's post as pointing out, probably unnecessarily that the words "punk" and "emo" can refer both to the style of music and the social scene but that "emo" probably refers more to the scene now than anything else.

I could be wrong though.

I think that's why it confused me. It seems to just add a comparison to what Emaline said (and a pretty confusing one, since the emo Emaline was talking about is a kind of punk anyway), but it's got that smilie with the rolling eyes and I generally assume someone's being patronising to the person they're quoting when they use that. I guess they must be using it for another reason.

Of course a punk was a type of person before it was a type of music before it was a type of person too.

Thisssssssss.

I know plenty of "emo" or "scene" kids who listen to depressing music, have angular haircuts and wear tight jeans who also happen to be quite cheery, interesting and generally OK to be around, despite the aforementioned depressing music. I think that the nature of the tunes do often attract a certain person, much in the same way that aggressive music often attracts aggressive people. But the scene or the tunes shouldn't be blamed for the actions of it's fans.

But if someone wanted to talk about it, and to stop from resurrecting it he made a new topic, he would then be complained at as well so which is the better option?

If they wanted to add to the disscusion and the thread was at the bottom of the first page, then I think its fine to resurect it. If you are adding to the disscusion.

However, if the thread is dead, and gone and someone resurects it, then I would say that that's not such a good idea.

Why does there have to be this discussion every single time somebody revives a dead thread?
