Alden Ginger of The Unicorns has a new band called Clues. It has some members of Arcade Fire and Hrsta and some other cool bands in it too. They're putting out their first album on Constellation (Evangelista and Vic Chestnut and Godspeed You! Black Emperor and such) next year. Anyway I booked them to play a show on my campus which should be rather fun. Apparently they put on a pretty excellent live show (with three drummers, no less). A Canadian duo called Elfin Saddle which uses all sorts of cool acoustic instruments and a home made drums is opening and maybe, as a first opener, an excellent new band from Main called Lady Lamb the Bee Keeper (check them out online. Good stuff and deserving of recognition!).
Clues was the strangest show I've ever seen. I think I saw their first live show, or at least one of the early ones. They only had one drummer at the time anyhow. Alden (Penner is his proper name) had a lapel mike which ran through all sorts of distortion, but he would only use it in between songs, just shrieking and yelling into it at random moments. The drummer in the middle of the set began removing clothes, and soon after stood up, threw the drum set all over the stage, kicked over some other instruments, and walked out through the front door. While he was gone, Alden mumbled disconnected phrases and shrieked. After a few minutes, the drummer came back, set up his drum set, said "I was hot", and the show began as if nothing had happened. For their encore they did a karaoke cover of some old song. In the middle of the show, the keyboardist asked the audience to applaud her parents, who were in the crowd. So strange.
Elfin Saddle opened, and they were a lot of fun.
