Topic: i'm ready to come out from under my rock, please help me. (Read 120472 times)

most of you that know me know that i don't really listen to a lot of music. i haven't switched out my ipod in nearly 2 years and i almost always listen to the same handful of bands. well now i have a job where i can have my ipod with me all the time and i guess i am getting sick of the same thing all the time. i want some new music, but i don't know where to start! i'm so intimidated by how much is out there that i don't know about, so i was hoping that all of you that know so much can help me out. so here is what is on my ipod right now... i am looking for things that are sort of similar. any suggestions would be appreciated.

You may want to give The Mountain Goats a listen. The Sunset Tree is a really good starter.

Also The Silver Jews, whose last album is also very good

Based on Mogwai, I recommend The Verve, particularly the early stuff which is prog-y as shit. Based on Sigur Ros I recommend Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Based on Antony and the Johnsons, I suggest Rufus Wainright.

About half of the bands on your list lead me to believe you'd like a few albums that came out this year: Visiter by The Dodos and the self-titled albums by Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes. I will second all of This Will Destroy You/Okkervil River/Explosions in the Sky/American Analog Set, and add Spoon and Voxtrot for more Austinite awesomeness (although neither suggestion is necessarily catered to your taste based on the bands you listed).

I am going to recommend Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy/Palace/Palace Music/Palace Brothers/ohjesussomanynames. He goes under various pseudonyms and group names. I am kind of loosely basing this recommendation off of Antony and the Johnsons. I'd wager that The Letting Go is a good record to start with (under the Bonnie 'Prince' Billy name).

Also: Nina Nastasia. The record she did with Jim White last year was exceptionally pretty.

Yelley, I do not think I have met anyone that likes any kind of singer-songwritery music that does not enjoy Nina Nastasia.

Her recent album with Jim White, You Follow Me was pretty stellar, in addition to her older ones On leaving and Dogs.

yelley, i like the bands you have on your ipod. pretty solid selection. based on those bands, i would suggest you give these bands a try (i can upload a couple of songs from each if you'd like)

Any Modest Mouse from before 2004. After that they lost their unique sound and simple guitar riffage and traded it in for Franz Ferdinand-esque poppy shit.

Not like I don't like Franz Ferdinand, but they're not fuckin' Modest Mouse.

That's true, if she were going to try it, i'd probably recommend she download Fingers Crossed first...it gets a little more silly and ADHA after that. i still thinkk they're good though, imo.

Eisley - their EPs (their debut LP had most of the songs from their EPs, but I like the recordings a lot better than the ones on the LP. i haven't heard their new album yet thouhg)

Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic (everyone should rock out to this album a few times)
M. Ward - Post-War
Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous (kind of iffy about which album to put down but eh)

I still maintain that there should be no way to like that song so much and not enjoy some of their older songs. It's not like it's vastly different from anything else they've ever done. If you just like the proggy jamming, "We Looked Like Giants" has always been suitable for that, and if you liked the lyrical side then "I Will Follow You into the Dark" far supercedes it, I think. Hell, "We Laugh Indoors" has both to some degree.

Also, the guy above me has obvious done extensive damage to his brain system things with heavy drugs, so please don't be enticed by his pormises of "every sound ever."

I recommended this particular Nick Cave album because it really has something for everyone. And its good to hear somebody else likes it, too. Even though it is not my favourite album by him, it is the album to listen to as far as "getting into Nick Cave" is concerned.

And as for "Lightbulb Sun", I think there other albums by PT (a band which is enormously overrated, but still very good) I could have mentioned, like "The Sky Moves Sideways" or "Fear of a Blank Planet". But since the back catalogue of that band is so ''stylistically-inconsistent" I picked a 'transition album' instead.

And yelley, don't forget to check out the terrific music of Glenn Branca somewhere along your journey. Oh...did I really just say that?

Indeed, it is the album which got me into Nick Cave, it has my second favourite of his songs ('There She Goes, My Beautiful World') on it... it's brilliant stuff.
