Yelley, you might also enjoy The Weepies and if you want something more electro-poppy, Shiny Toy Guns are fun, too. Someone said Eisley's EPs and I agree with that too.

Augh, no way. SO WHINY even by DCFC standards. Between the "LA Is Dumb" and "My Dad Is A Cunt" songs I can't bear to listen to it anymore.

My favorite thing about Facts, and something I think is sadly lacking in virtually anything Ben Gibbard has touched since, is its understatement. Everything with newer DCFC and the Postal Service (which, to be honest, I still enjoy) is all "HEY GUYS CHECK IT OUT MY HEART IS ON MY SLEEVE RIGHT HERE LOOK YOU CAN POKE MY VENTRICLES," and it's disappointing to me because I think he's capable of more subtlety than that.

Man I hate bashing on the guy, he has made a record that I genuinely think is a classic and I know it's shitty to be That Guy On The Internet Who Bashes You Because He Liked Your Earlier Work Better...but yeah.

I wonder how you came to the conclusion that Portishead sounds even remotely like anything worth listening to.

I say: Black Mountain, Rheostatics, Bridezilla, The Dismemberment Plan?

Also I second Mountain Goats and Flaming Lips.

(If you don't like the bands I posted, it's probably because I'm terrible at distinguishing links in music. They all have guitars though. That's a link right?)

EDIT::
Ok, I'm kinda late on these bands, sooo:
Go Go Go Airheart
Two If By Sea
Thomas Lunch
Kinetic Stereokids
Hot Hot Heat
Bang Gang
1986
Bridges and Powerlines
Amplifco
Broken Social Scene (For a fun time, listen to their song "Love and Mathematics" and read through the XKCD archives)
Yo La Tengo
Chikita Violenta

Mmm....if you're ready to "come out from your rock", i'd suggest to listening to things that could not really be listed under the umbrella term "indie". Or post rock (for that matter) Not that there's anything wrong with liking indie (or that it's even a genre per se, with a clearly definable sound, etc) Just.......try to branch out, i guess.

As i know that's not as easy as it sounds, you could start by listening to things that sound "kind of" like the things you posted in your list, but are either more challenging/older,etc.

For example, if you like post-rock, try listening to challenging post rock....like Gastr del Sol. They more or less lack the instrumental crescendos that permeate the whole genre of post-rock but are awesome in their own way.

Anyway, some random things i suggest, given your tastes:

-Television (GET. MARQUEE MOON. NOW.)
-Joy Division
-Talking Heads
-Battles
-Sonic Youth
-Fugazi

I know it's rather useless if i don't post any download links, but still, try listening to one or two of the above bands.

isn't saying "television does not suck" seem to go along the lines with "branding?" iono, some would view that as a double standard

Fuck yes.  Remain in Light, Daydream Nation, Unknown Pleasures, etc.

Also: The Modern Lovers' self-titled debut.  If only everyone making the-music-currently-known-as-emo understood that Jonathan Richman already did awkward teenage angst better than they'll ever manage, there would be a lot fewer shitty bands in the world.

-the shins
-iron and wine
-mogwai
-jason mraz
-sigur ros
-antony and the johnsons
-kings of convenience
-clap your hands say yeah
-neutral milk hotel
-the decemberists

You've done well, so far.  I, personally, don't even know how to be sick of the Shins, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, or Iron and Wine, though.

Acousticy goodness:
-Sara Lov - Choice songs: "Animals", and "New York".  Her band, Devics, is fantastic, too.  She's also a total babe, if that counts for anything.
-Sea Wolf - Basically, the whole "Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low" EP.
-Devendra Banhart - Listen around, there will be something you like, I guarantee it.
-Bright Eyes - Again, listen around.  Also, not quite acoustic, but a lot of mellow stuff.
-Belle and Sebastian - Everything.  Yeah.

Shoegazy Space-rock:
-Silversun Pickups - EVERYTHING.  Well, "Lazy Eye", "Kissing Families", "Well Thought Out Twinkles" are starters.
-The Secret Machines - "Now Here Is Nowhere", "Lightning Blue Eyes", "Alone, Jealous, and Stoned".  Holy fuck, these guys are amazing.
-Panda Riot.  Eety beety band at the moment.  Choice songs, uh, hrm, their MySpace stuff plus a song called "Marker"

Unclassified Amazing:
-The Arcade Fire - Funeral.  Yes, the entire album.
-TV On The Radio - Start at Young Liars - EP and work your way up.
-Eulogies - "Life Boat", "One Man", "If I Knew You".  Adding them on MySpace got me a "Hellooooo" comment from them, which is cool.

Good luck.

I'd just like to say that I am basically in the same position as yelley, give or take or exchange a couple/several bands. Thus, I found this thread extremely helpful and exciting and otherwise delectable. So now all that remains is finding time to go and find these musics and play their beautiful, beautiful sound waves through my skull. Mmmm, skullwaves!

Nine Black Alps.
The Postal Service.

Albert Hammond Jr.

They are all good groups. And you can't get sick of The Shins.

I'm going to agree on the great suggestions, [Rant] I have been stuck in the Genesis of Rock, which in itself is not bad but I tend to be out of tune with everyone except when it comes to a musical debate of origins and the like. [/Rant]

Opeth's album "Damnation," which is, in opposition to what its name would suggest, soft, mellow, melancholic and peaceful in a depressing way.
