As cool as that is, wait'll you see how one guy refined the idea even further.

Also, those computers are cool but they need this.

But the one up there has Mr. Teal on it.

That is the 2004 Shrovis-Bishopthorpe Thruppeny II. That was from the era when they realized consumers might like to access the internet, but still fiercely refused them that option. Instead, it would give you a special internet consisting of little else than lovely pictures of finches and other passerine birds.

Ancient records suggest that this kind of experiment was carried out from time to time, though the authenticity of these records can neither be confirmed nor denied. An early record of an experiment of this kind can be found in Herodotus's History. According to Herodotus, after carrying out such an experiment, the Egyptian pharaoh Psammetichos concluded the Phrygian race must predate the Egyptians since the children had first spoken the Phrygian word bekos, meaning "bread."[2]

An alleged experiment carried out by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century saw young infants raised without human interaction in an attempt to determine if there was a natural language that they might demonstrate once their voices matured. It is claimed he was seeking to discover what language would have been imparted unto Adam and Eve by God.

The experiments were recorded by the monk Salimbene di Adam in his Chronicles, who wrote that Frederick bade "foster-mothers and nurses to suckle and bathe and wash the children, but in no ways to prattle or speak with them; for he would have learnt whether they would speak the Hebrew language (which had been the first), or Greek, or Latin, or Arabic, or perchance the tongue of their parents of whom they had been born. But he laboured in vain, for the children could not live without clappings of the hands, and gestures, and gladness of countenance, and blandishments." [3]

Several centuries after Frederick II's experiment, James V of Scotland sent two children to be raised by a mute woman in a specially-constructed cabin, to determine if language was learned or innate. The children were reported to have spoken good Hebrew.[4] This experiment was later repeated by the Mughal emperor Akbar, who held that speech arose from hearing, thus children raised without hearing human speech would become mute.[5]

Ah yes, the Steampunk look.  The ornate metalwork is indeed cool and nice to look at, but seems like it'd be distracting.

I'm more into the stateliness of hardwoods:

I think it's that it looks like some computer company exec said to one of his guys "Y'know these steampunk cases are big right now, we could make a lot of money selling a mass market version!"
And his engineering guy basically said "Well, if it's Victorian then it'll be made out of wood, so we'll just make the exact same stuff we usually make but we'll use a fake wood grain plastic."

Basically it looks cheap and nasty.

Wow.  Just... wow.

That's cherry, a genuine hardwood.  You guys are so used to seeing imitation crap, then when you actually see the real thing, you think it looks cheap and plastic.  It's not shiny because it's plastic; it's varnished and polished.

Whatever.  I'll go take my nap now.

I would much rather have a hardwood desktop than a steampunk one with a bunch of extraneous knobs and dials. There is a simple elegance to the Cherry that the steampunk lacks.

ah so the musician who performed the song is a fellow named Loudon Wainwright. I think it's pretty lame that the description on youtube didn't credit the musician; this post of that video does:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2292524727199446242

I mean, it mentions him in the credits at the end, but who's going to see that?

Incidentally, when I read his wikipedia page some of his other songs sound pretty hilarious too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudon_Wainwright_III

hee hee he wrote a song about his son breastfeeding called "Rufus is a tit man."

Aw, it ran out of shiny things and precious metals. Oh well, there are far more practical uses for them anyway. (Gold makes crappy weapons anyway.)

But wait, those materials wouldn't weigh three tons. I'll bet it's made of Sapphadamantinium.

Plus there should be more spikes on the weapon. Specifically, there should be spikes on the spikes, kind of a fractal thing.

I can't decide if James Joyce was a genius or just needlessly pretentious and obtuse. Or both. I've tried to properly read Ulysses many times and never got beyond a few pages, despite having a broad familiarity with the whole thing.
