A bootleg of one of the three shows The Mountain Goats played at the Bowery Ballroom this year.
This performance of Family Happiness is fucking harrowing.

They seem to be playing a decent amount of songs from The Coroner's Gambit, which really makes me really excited about when I see them. That is possibly my favourite Mountain Goats album. I even like it more than All Hail West Texas.

E: Oh shit, this is from the one night where Craig Finn came out on stage!

Favriel - Grimes

Grimes is great! dreamy, experimental, neat electronic percussion and the lady has a sweet sultry voice to boot.

the punknews.org weekly podcast - new song on it by a band i'm unfamiliar with called Elway is totally awesome!  apparently they used to be called 10-4 Eleanor or something.
Yeah, they up and changed their name randomly, and then signed to Red Scare.

If you google/mf search, you should find their two albums under 10-4 Eleanor. Good stuff.
Man, it's always weird when the internet talks about local bands. I'm not big into the punk scene but Elway's from around here and I run in their circle, though I'm not really on a name basis with any of them (this is also the case with Dovekins / Candy Claws / Pictureplane, in descending order of familiarity). Went to one of their CD self-release shows in town before they got signed to their current label. I used to have it but I ended up losing the disc and using the package materials for a mix.

Anyway, Gold Blood. Sort of like Pretty Hate Machine-era Nine Inch Nails with all the goth influences replaced by scuzzy synth-punk.

I tried to listen to Erasure all day (again) but ended up accidentally putting on Couer de Pirate. But that's okay! 'Cause now I've listened to Couer de Pirate all day.

She's coming out with a new album next autumn, Zingo!

Bad Kids by The Black Lips.
Very excited to see them live this Friday. And with a cute girl I've had a crush on for a while too! Woo!

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - "Source Tags & Codes"

Kinda working my way backwards with this band, and loving everything so far.  As amazing as this album is, I can't quite figure how it got such huge mainstream exposure, as even the more melodic songs aren't really that poppy.

Really quite enjoying them as their suit today's mood.

spinning my newly arrived Matthew Cooper (aka Eluvium) vinyl OST for the movie Some Days are Better Than Others. It's really nice, definitely reminiscent of the Matthew Robert Cooper "Miniatures" vinyl that came out some while back. Murmuring keyboards over drifting ambient haze with just enough organ and processed guitar thrown in the mix. Really nice listening for a cool spring morning like the one here.

If I could give you a piece of advice for listening to Jandek, it would be "don't listen to Jandek."

Can't get enough of Nick Drake today. Even though he only put out a few records, compared to the other folk greats, every one of them is flawless.

I hope you've heard Bert Jansch. "Needle of Death" is a classic. Rest of the album's grand stuff, too. Not my usual vein (ETA: pardon the pun) but I'd certainly recommend that song at very least.

"King's Crossing" - Elliott Smith

I've been listening to "Waltz #2" all day, to the point where I've already almost got the damn song memorized. The vocals are so perfect in the bridge, makes my spine tingle.

Definitely. I saw that a bunch of Nick Drake's covers of Jansch are compiled with other rarities on "Family Tree", so I checked the originals out as well. Really good stuff.

a metric fuckload of cancer bats right now.  for some reason i had them down as one of those "hardcore, but dumbed down" bands (probably due to the amount of exposure they seem to get for such seemingly uncommercial music), but fuck me if "hail destroyer" isn't an absolute beast of an album.  definitely checking out more.  and their cover of "sabotage" is the balls.

They spell technology with a K, the album title sounds like a really bad yeast infection, and they include whale-song samples in one of their tracks...

That's Why I Love You - Van Halen.

An unreleased song on the Van Halen III album, I really wish this era could've stayed together. Given a chance they could've really worked! Alas, Warner really shitted on their chances of anything like the kind of success they got before Cherone. I love this song because its just light, and the guitar is busy in all the right places. I'm really surprised this was never on the final cut of the album, would've been a #1 single for sure. But hey, its all hindsight.

I love string quartets.  I find them a particularly fine vehicle for angst - and the best examples of that, to my mind are Bartók's 6th and Shostakovich's 13th.  Which I have now decided to listen to today.
