If you see one movie next year
« on: 06 Dec 2008, 23:06 »

Please don't make it this one, you will give them the wrong impression.

That's right, the sequel to the "I guess it's okay to make another one" film Alvin and the Chipmunks comes out late next year.  What separates this one from the last you ask?  Why, they've added the Chipettes of course.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel;  it's slowly killing you inside.

I admire the balls of the executive who said "Lets call it 'The Squeakuel'".

I dispair for humanity that this earned him a bonus instead of a punch in the face.

I am willing to bet actual money that there will be a Beverly Hills Chihuahua sequel.

If I'm wrong I will lose some money but there will not be a sequel to Beverly Hills fuckin' Chihuahua

I dunno... The Spirit might just get me up off my ass on Christmas day so's I can see that. Frank Miller is a great comic artist, and I can't wait to see what he does with the Spirit.

It's a comic film about a vigilante who tries to stop crime, more on it at the wiki(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit)

Quote
The Spirit, referred to in one newspaper article cited below as "the only real middle-class crimefighter", was the hero persona of young detective Denny Colt. Presumed killed in the first three pages of the premiere story, Colt later revealed to his friend, Central City Police Commissioner Dolan, that he had in fact gone into suspended animation caused by one of archvillain Dr. Cobra's experiments. When Colt awakened in Wildwood Cemetery, he established a base there and, using his newfound anonymity, began a life of fighting crime wearing only a small domino mask, blue business suit, red necktie, fedora hat and gloves for a costume. The Spirit dispensed justice, funding his adventures with the rewards for capturing villains.

i know what it's about.

i don't know why Frank Miller would make a movie out of it and not bother creating a unique visual style for it or, heaven forbid, keeping some semblance of the original style from the comic (obviously updated for today's audiences).

instead he just took someone elses story and put a Sin City filter over the top of it. so i ask again: Why?

In my family, it's a yearly tradition to go see a movie on Thanksgiving night and Christmas night. It started with our yearly trips to Disneyworld at Thanksgiving when I was little, and just kept going from there.

Well he worked on it, due to the unique way that comics were once created. See, character rights and who worked on them used to be the rights of the producers of the material. So most of the classic comics(Superman, Batman, etc.) have had many different authors, artists, etc., and that's what's happened to The Spirit, so he has actually helped to shape the character as he is now. Someone who works on a comic also has a huge potential to completely change it, just look at some of the Batman comics written by Miller. Also, in regards to the lighting: Sin City was set in a neo-noir style of artistry; The Spirit was originally set in a noir style, much the same as the Tracer Bullet style of Calvin and Hobbes. That's why the lighting is similiar: because Sin City took elements already present in a fairly old style of artistic lighting.

Oh so very true, the only reason I'm going is because I trust what Frank Miller's done and if he's the primary artistic motive force behind it, I wanna see it. Unfortunately, that's rather similar to Star Wars fans when Lucas started making more movies... However, Miller has yet to mess up really badly.

I heard they cancelled it due to a suit or something. If they didn't, I'd be very glad of it, but I don't truly know of which way it is now... Hopefully it's still going to come out.

It's not canceled.  The lawsuit is still sort of ongoing, but everyone is basically proceeding as if it's not.  Since the lawsuit has occurred, they've released at least 3 production diaries and the Muse trailer.  Plus, WB has put in a large sum of money into this, they're not going to throw it away.

Never a big fan of Dragonball, mostly cuz as a kid I didn't have cable/satellite, and never caught it when it was on. Might go with my friends, they like DB.

You want to see Alice looking like a 27 year old heroin addict dressed entirely in black and white, with the Wonderland re-invisioned in tones of NyQuil green all done entirely in stop-motion claymation?

Because it doesn't sound too fascinating.

Gee, I wonder if she will horribly overact and overplay the crazy/angry bit. She's like a less subtle and infinitely less talented Pacino, except she chews more scenery and breaks up marriages.

Also, yes, Madmartigan and Gay Perry are classics.

Methinks I am becoming quite unpopular here...

Overplaying the angry/crazy bit can't be bad; I liked Miranda Richardson's version

OK, Kilmer was good in Willow and as Doc Holliday, but At First Sight? Batman Forever?

Oh man do I love that movie! The cast is so great in general. Yeah, even Kilmer, shockingly enough. An unrelated though cool fact about that movie: that famous scene with Pacion and De Niro in the diner, that was filmed at two different times. One time was Pacino on his own, the other time was De Niro. In other words, the scene cuts back and forth like it does because the two of them weren't being filmed together (and still it's awesome).

Wombat, that actually isn't true, unless they decided to manipulate the footage to make it look like they were both there, in the same shot. They mostly use the back and forth, but there is one shot that takes them both in. I can't remember, it might be some director's cut extra or something, I think I remember seeing a boom mic, like they hadn't clipped it down to size yet, but I could be wrong.

The Tekken film.

Remind me which fucktard decided to jam RANDOM characters from T1 to FRICKING T6 and get away with dropping staple characters like Lei, Wang and Hwoarang? I just hope they at least deliver something redeeming.

I remember someone called Marky the "poor man's Matt Damon". Pretty funny, true or no.

On the Marky Mark redemption you can't forget Boogie Nights, I think that is enough to forgive him for anything.

I also have a softspot for Tigerland if we are talking good things Joel Schumacher has done for the world.

In fact I'm struggling to think of one actor (male or female) I dislike who doesn't have at least one good film on their cv.
