You'd need to pay for my flight over but on the upside I can dance, I have interesting hair and a rad suit. Other downsides include that I don't dance and I will stand outside smoking for most of the night.

Shoot, you shouldn't have disqualified girls. I'm taller than you with no heels, look amazing in a suit, and can tango, cha-cha, waltz and nightclub two-step (all adaptable to modern songs). I am good at entertaining high school aged folks sometimes and would not try any funny business at the end of the night.

Holy crap I would make a good prom date.

Ally. If you have a friend in the same situation as you, just, take that person. Regardless of gender, y'know? Hopefully all your friends would be cool with dancing with you and maybe sharing a kiss at the end of the night. Failing that, Kieffer.

Really now though. Folks, the prom is not about making everybody jealous and trying to cement yourself a reputation one last time. It's about enjoying the night, and maybe even shaking things up enough that people will think "Hey, what the fuck? Maybe I don't know anything about that person afterall". Mostly about enjoying yourself without any concern for your reputation, though. Your reputation in school is about as important as the colour your shoelaces were when you were six. You might feel embarassed forever, but there's not a single other person alive who gives a shit.

Dear Ally,

I am charming and go to the same record stores you do! Plus I look rad in a suit. I will also be free in June.

I thought prom was about getting sloshed and then losing your virginity to someone you'll soon hate in a dusty third rate hotel room.

I had prom, and my sister had prom. Perhaps my school is just really, really weird. At my prom, I wore a dress because the Head Girl threatened to revoke my ticket if I turned up in a "dykey suit", got really, really drunk and got backhanded by a guy for saying Jesus was a Jew, went to a really shitty afterparty and then walked with several people and no shoes on to a BP garage to get a Mars bar and more alcohol, and it was so late they served us through the little hatch thing.

Classy.

But Jesus was a Jew!

We don't have proms here. We have formals. They basically function in much the same way though. My formal was fairly awful and I'm honestly surprised that I even went. I did go to my girlfriend's formal however and that wasn't too bad. It was a little weird sitting next to the 40 year old boyfriend of one of my girlfriend's classmates but hey, whatever. We did however spend a good portion of the night outside, smoking.

Though I haven't ever gone to a prom. I skipped my prom to play a Role Playing Game with my friends. This is awesome because it lets me rank high in most of the "who's the biggest geek here" contests I get myself in to.

I quite enjoyed my prom, most of the gitwizards who didn't want to rent a suit or go because they were "too cool" stayed away and a lot of us were able to have ridiculous conversations whilst scoffing free food in what was basically a stately home.

do you like hypnotists because the afterparty usually has one

What

Actually my junior prom was sweet. The music was shit, so after about an hour of dancing with my friends, which consisted of them "poppin and lockin'" and me switching between ragtime/charleston and an irish jig, me and my date went upstairs to the lounge-ish area of the dinner theater where the prom was. YOU CAN GUESS WHAT HAPPENED*

*What happened was that the lounge/restaraunt area was supposed to be off-limits to prom attendees, but this cool 50 year old-ish waitress was like "you kids seem civilized. What are you doing up here?" We replied "Music sucks." She laughed and said "In that case, you can sit up here if you like. There's no one here tonight, I'm the only one on duty besides the kitchen staff." We thanked her and sat down and just had some water and were talking and laughing and such, and then about 15 minutes later the waitress came back and said "This is probably a special night for you right?" I was about to reply "well, not really, we only decided to come at the last minute," but she went on with "would you like some wine? I figure you would probably drink anyway, so better to do it here and drink something classy then some awful vodka or something." So we had wine, and continued to talk and laugh for two hours. Also we kissed and had sex at her house later.

But yeah, coolest old lady waitress ever!

Proms have apparently been becoming more and more common in the UK over the last decade due to high exposure to American pop culture and the glamorization of proms out here. Basically, a bunch of whiny teenage rich kids saw a bunch of movies where idiot kids go to prom and have like OMG the best night evar and started yelling "WHY NOT US?!"

ALLY

i know i am a girl but i am pretty good at cross-dressing as a guy.  my hair is short enough to fit under a hat and no one will even be able to tell the difference!  i've been looking for an excuse to chop all my hair off so i am willing to let you choose a boy hairstyle and cut it that way.  i am actually better looking as a dude than as a lady, so if you let me take you you will get a hot date and also i will get to feel pretty.

i don't have a suit but i am sure i would look pretty good in one, and if you choose me i will buy one just for you which means you get to choose the color/style/everything.  i will even learn how to tie a tie for you.

i am shorter than you but if tom cruise can work the platform sneakers, i bet i can work them even better.

i am forever 18 so i won't be too creepily old for you.  however, since i've already gone to college i'll still have that "sexy & mysterious older man" aura about me.
BONUS:  i've been living in italy for the past three years & am italian so i can whisper sweet nothings into your ear in a foreign language all night and all your girlfriends will be so jealous.

i think from the dance off thread you have probably already seen that i am well-acquainted with the cheesy 90's music and i know how to shake my booty to it.

i've already done prom once, and i did it right, so i know how to give you a good time.

ally, look past the unfortunate fact that i do have boobs and you will find i am the right girl/guy/whateveryouwantmetobebaby for you.

ITT: Ally links us to her High School's facebook network and we nominate five eligible bachelors to be her prom date before voting on one.

Potential downfall being that she might get a stalker, but it's okay because it will probably be a foreign lady anyway.

Ally, I am obvioulsy the best choice. I have a suit and Jodie once dreamed I asked her to prom. If someone on the internet has had a dream about me asking them to prom, then surely that is all the proof you need that I am you number 1 choice. That and I'm pretty good at looking like a boy when I want to.

Ally I am older than you, but that is OK because people are not good at gauging the age of a young man with a bald head. Many think I am older than I am but I can pass as younger on account of having a softish face and being silly. When I am clean shaven I can just say I am whatever age I want and get away with it.

I look mighty fine in a suit, I think, sometimes, and I have a nice selection of not-black suits in which to look good, which is good because while black suits at the prom are OK I don't think they're what you're looking for. Unless there is a Kieffer inside of your black suit, I guess.

I can dance and I dance a lot with my feet, which is slightly unusual from people around and sets me apart from the crowd. Also I can slow dance just fine, I will not go for your bum or anything (unless it is after 11:30PM).

I really think you should actually take Kieffer but if not whatever I am here for you.

If I'm paying for my own flight I expect at least one kiss with tongue.

I need to get rid of any losers right off the bat. different tests for girls and guys. kieffer you don't need to take it. you automatically qualify as a potential date because I just looked in the fashion thread and man you look good in a suit. are you shaving the beard soon? I think you should but it's not a big deal.

boys: would you ever ignore me at prom

I think that most of the girls are planning on wearing suits, also considering the fact that you can corespond over the forum it would be somewhat unlikely to occur.

If you are attractive as the fellow forumites make you out to be I sincerly doubt that anyone would be ignoring you.

Sorry for replying, I am just really interested in this thread, so much incite into such basic ideas, its all rather intriquing for the ameatur sociologist. Sorry.

True, but with cropped hair and a lack of (obvious) makeup they would simply look like a more attractive guy, one who is manifestly attractive and who looks sleek and slighty refined. It may even work out for you better. Good Lord it sounds as if I am setting up a romcom by accident.

Ally, I could take you to prom.

pros: older, relatively tall (6'1"), scrub up ok, have a suit, know how to dance, Australian accent offers foreign mystique and air of dangerous swarthiness due to current run of Australia! at box office, can afford all that prom ticket and dinner crap you were talking about.

cons: probably too old to be in the "impressive" age range (ie: early 30s as opposed to early 20s), small yet ferocious girlfriend who would definitely kill the both of us violently should our dancefloor gyrations look too authentic sets limit on amount of jealousy induced in fellow prom-goers, tend to get sweaty at clubs so dancing in a suit would probably suck, easily bored and/or annoyed by general teenage yammering, manly stubble comes with unfortunate side-effect of causing any potential makeouts to be scratchy, resulting in pash-rash (also, see above girlfriend issue).

On revision of my application I guess I am not an ideal candidate.  Pity.

my friends are good looking.
Probs wouldn't ignore you then, and I look damn good in a suit. I'll drop my fees to 40 an hour if you score me a t-shirt of an eagle in front of an american flag to take back to australia. 30 if the eagle's crying.

Edit: Also hannah said I should mention that I have most of Est's pros and none of the cons.

Ally, I should be your prom date because:

-I am older and taller, but not so much of either where your friends would whisper things. Gossip about your date would focus more on your ability to get a cool dude and not on his origins.
-I can dance relatively well, both coupled and alone.
-I have excellent capacity for conversation and enough knowledge of minutiae to maintain discourse on any manner of subject that may come up.
-We are already good friends, so my attention would obviously stick with you, but I would know when to hang back and give you your space too.
-Close enough to actually be able to make this happen.
