Album Nomination Game -- CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
« on: 28 Apr 2009, 15:03 »

This is it, dudes & ladies!

Link to full bracket: here

Only one thing worth noting: Dylan got 29 votes, Davis got 30 last round. I think it's pretty neat that we have such a low-seeded final round.

Again, one week - voting closes 20:00GMT on 4 May 2009

Dylan's is the better of these two albums. That said, it's not even close to the best album ever. Oh well.

Clever. I'm inclined to vote in a similarly vague and half-assed fashion. I may remember wrong, but I don't think I've really had much investment in this since Unknown Pleasures got voted out.  I really don't care much about Bringing It All Back Home. Like, it's all right I guess. I'll listen to it occasionally. I guess I will go with Miles Davis then, but even then it's not a whole lot better. It's good, but I feel like we ended up with these albums that are like Good AlbumsŪ instead of ones anyone is really passionate about.

I agree with this. I think it's difficult to avoid on a forum of people who seem pretty well educated on (and interested in) the context and history of the music they listen to. I guess that makes us uncomfortable calling some of our personal favourite albums "the greatest albums of all time" and instead choose albums that are considered more canonical or influential.

I am guilty of this. I nominated Things We Lost in the Fire even though Secret Name is my favourite Low album. I just wanted to see them make it into the competition, and I am happy that they made it so far.

Hey, I nominated my favourite records, but I can distinguish between which is my favourite and which I consider the best ones, for the most part. Doesn't mean I'm right, mind.

But I honsetly consider Dylan an all-time great, and that record is in his top 3, if not the best, so I've got no problem with it.

Yeah. The distinction between "Favorite Music" and "Best Music" is a muddy line, if it's a line at all. Is not your favorite what is best to you? Or can our musical appreciation go beyond what we ourselves prefer?

Fuck that. Abstention from the Championship. Of the four that were in round 5, I would've probably picked Abbey Road.

I think we should consider this process to be like training, as for the military, or the theatre, or the ballet, or for a set-piece in a game of football. You don't expect to get it right the first time. You do it again and again and again until you do get it right.

I think we should do it again and again and again until we get it right.

SILKWORM- FIREWATER

If we were going that route, I'd be all about

And Harry has an interesting idea. What if we just did this endlessly, the only rule being once an album has been in the tournament, it cannot be in the subsequent one? So I mean if you really really want to vote for Abbey Road again or summat that's fine but some culling of the fold and renewing of the pool would be desirable.

EDIT: Also someone other than Matt should have to do all the work in future iterations. Thanks Matt! This was a really cool thing you did.

An amusing choice between two albums that are not the tops for either artist.

Bringing it All Back Home

I had great difficulty choosing this over Sgt Pepper, and another day it could have gone otherwise.  None the less, Tommy's not wrong; this is not a feeble least-worst choice.

Personally I think Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde were superior records. While Bringing it all Back Home was probably more important considering the electric switch, I just see the other two as musically more complete.

(Disclaimer: The above statement is not representative of my beliefs concerning Bob Dylan's music, of which I like the electric stuff quite a lot, definitely more so than the acoustic stuff although that was pretty damn good too.)
