A man called into my department (Customer Service) to inform us that he had recently legally changed his name and would like all documents forthwith to reflect that he is now Elvis Presley. His name used to be Carl.

We have a list of all the famous-people names we come across; Stephen King, Barbara Walters, etc.

we did that at the one i worked at too! the first one i got was michael jackson but he got really mad at me when i said something. later i imagined it was probably something like michael bolton from office space and dude probably got comments like that about 500 times a day so i kept quiet for every famous name i got after that, even though it was so tempting sometimes.

well, i am in school at the moment, and living with my parents so i don't need to worry about rent and bills.  they are not pressuring me into finding a job because they feel that i should focus on finishing my education first. this is a nice thing!
i am only taking two courses, so my workload isn't completely ridiculous and i am not as stressed out as i was when i was a full-time university student.
my grades are excellent.
my teachers are funny and easy-going.

positivity!

RE: famous names

The weirdest is when you think it's just their name, but then it turns out they actually are the famous person. One of my classmates in training got a famous drummer from a more famous band and he was all "do you know who I am?" and she was all "no". She said it in his voice too so I was like "!!!!!!!!! OMG THAT ACTUALLY WAS HIM BONER BONER BONER" Apparently she's not a fan like I am.

travel a lot, free room and board, decent medical, no chance of layoff, great college benefits. Sounds perfect till you realize people are going to be shooting at you and trying to blow you up. Crazy as it seems i still enjoy every minute of it.

Yesterday, i was talking to a friend of mine about "Positive things about your job". And he clearly won on that party... ^^. He works for The Department of Weapon Systems & Ballistics in Munich and has to test armoured cars to their security classification. In his words: "People send in their newest fancy cars costing half a million and more and i get paid for blowing them up and empty several rounds of ammo on it....getting money for destroying expensive things makes me happy..."

Having a mind-numblingly boring job at least makes me appreciate minor things. Like doctors finishing off their recordings with "Hey, hoooo!" completely randomly, or funny phrasings of weird shit patients have done. And there are long breaks, because middle-aged women like to take breaks and talk for ages.

Ladybug, that reminds me of this one report I heard where this medical transcriber was told that a kid had "Phollenfrometry", and the transcriber didn't know how to spell it and couldn't find it in any of his books, so he went to the doctor to find out what it was.

Turns out the kid had fallen from a tree.

Supposedly true.

Heh, it actually wouldn't surprise me at all if that was true. It's really weird how sometimes I'm expecting them to say some difficult, medical word, and just expecting that will leave me completely unable to hear what they're actually saying, and I'll have to ask for help, and then I feel dumb when it turns out to be something really obvious and I can totally hear it afterwards.

I used to work at Oberweis Dairy, which was an ice cream shop. We would take a cup of ice cream to the back room and tell our manager we were testing the product so we could be more knowledgeable when serving customers.

being able to sing and dance to the new wilco, sonic youth and dirty projectors during work is something i will never take for granted in retail.

whatever you may feel about these bands or ra ra riot or conor oberst or justice... i don't care.  i am so grateful to spend up to 8 hours a day listening to music i like instead of kanye west and beyonce.

It reassures me on a daily basis that I, someone of my slightly-better-than-an-idiot (read: certified) technical merit, will always have a place in this world. I realize that despite our obvious displeasure and mutual disdain for each others' existence, the non-IT management will always understand the value of my workmanship, the necessity of my opinion, and...

Wait--what? How much will that intern/H1B visa worker do that for? Of course I'll come in on Saturday...

I work at Aubuchon's...it's a hardware store, anyone in new york, vermont, new hampshire, maine, connecticut, massachusetts, and rhode island should know of it. I work 40 hours a week at 8 dollars an hour (compared to my last job of 20 hours a week at 7.25 an hour). I get paid weekly rather than bi-weekly. I'm almost guaranteed a job if I move to a town that has an Aubuchon's in it. Two of my coworkers turned me onto D&D, another of my coworkers, I went to high school with...Eh that's about it...I'd rather work at a library or music store, but oh well.

My last job was working as a security guard at an indian casino.

The perks?  I was absurdly overpaid considering my experience and what I was expected to do.  Also, sometimes they let me sit and read when guarding certain posts.  Mostly not, but sometimes.  Oh, the coffee was free.  Horrible, but free.  Let's see... I got to carry a nifty 2-way and listen to people say stupid or funny things on it.  I also got to wear a uniform that made my shoulders look ripped.  And since I worked the graveyard shift, my bosses were always really laid back.  As in, they didn't care.  About anything.  So that was cool.  For a while, too, I got to work with some friends of mine, but they all left for better jobs.  Also, there's the authority.  It's mostly imaginary, but there's power in a uniform.  When I told somebody to do something, especially an employee, they had to do it.  Customers?  Not so much.

If for some reason I could never go to college, I'd still be there.  It was a living wage... those are hard to find without a degree.

Now I'm a student.  It's not a job, which is the major perk.  No more long nights of terrible coffee, trying to stay alert and pretending that I had some sort of authority.  I almost miss it.  Almost.

i get to take a ferry across the bosphorus strait everyday. i usually have breakfast on it too. the view is epic, and the breeze is so refreshing in the morning.
i am supposed to get to work at 10 in the morning, yet i never come in earlier than 11 and after 12 about once or twice a week. yet my bosses don't complain because i can do stuff pretty faster and better than most people in the industry.
my room at the office overlooks 2 cafe-bar kinda places. they usually play great music, and i can take a break and go down there for a few drinks anytime i want.
there are beautiful trees too, old and tall ones that i can see from my room. green is a relief in a city of 12+ million.
the pay is more than great, and i get a full health plan including dental, visual etc etc.

yet, all this came at a price. i have been working since the first year of high school (part time then, full time after i finished h.s.) because my family is kinda poor, and work wasn't always as smooth as it is now. so i did not get to live my teens like my friends.

The past two days at work have been spent playing the Harry Potter trading card game (research into TCG dynamics of course) and listening to Wizard rock (to set the scene). Also wearing all the different pieces of armour we have scattered about the place. It's hard to type in big fuck-off gauntlets.

I spent two hours today stuffing envelopes! Which is surprisingly a lot more fun than it sounds after doing nothing but writing for the past two weeks. I'm only half-way through everything that's been printed at the polyclinic since Tuesday, though :/

It's fucking stupid that we send everything out on paper as well as digitally, thus wasting a TON of paper, because it's apparently thrown away once the offices we're sending them to have checked that they've received it on the computer. As if the postal service is more reilable than electronic communication.

business has been slow which means my shifts are all cut, but it also means i get to spend most of my workday singing and dancing to the new wilco and dirty projectors and old school michael jackson instead of doing real work.  retail jobs suck, but they suck about a million times more when you have to listen to shitty music the whole time.  i will never take my job's soundtrack for granted!

My paycheck for this week is $777.77, which is fun. Absolutely not indicative of my normal pay, but fun.

Because it's summer, everyone in my tiny town is on holiday. This means work days are extremely slow, I basically just spend every day sitting on a chair waiting for the occasional (and very rare) customer to drop by. Lately the weather has been really nice as well, and I hate wasting nice summer days being bored at work. However, since I have nothing to do the few regular customers that are still home during the summer sometimes comes up to talk to me, which I really enjoy. Today I had a great conversation with an awesome old lady who told me stories about her life, about places she had been and people she had met while traveling with her husband who was a musician. She seemed quite lonely and very happy about having someone to talk to, and when she left she took my hand and told me what a nice young lady I was.

I love working when things like this happen, and I really hope she'll drop by again sometime.

It's winter here, so I get to sit inside my lovely warm office all day. It takes a while to heat up because we have mega high ceilings, but we have two space heaters and the airconditioning on hot and it finally gets nice and warm.

There is a patisserie next door to work and they are lovely and I don't have to even tell them what I want anymore. I love being a regular.

My Mum is my boss, so I guess I get to hang out with my Mum at work all day!

The job itself is pretty awesome, I get to design advertising for this company (real estate) and make sure things get to the newspapers on time and I have internet and I can have music on at work.

Also, it's less than 10minutes drive from home.
