Okay I just learned that showings of this were supposed to have the Toy Story 3 trailer and the one I went to didn't and now I'm pissed

Anyway!

I absolutely loved Up. It excelled amazingly in pretty much every way, but the thing that struck me most was how goddamn funny it was--that was totally unexpected on my part. The writing was superb--a whole lot of subtlety and every single element introduced, even the tiniest of details, played a key role in the whole plot and the ultimate tie-ins just completed the whole film. That was something Pixar did with the Toy Stories and Finding Nemo that's been missing in their more recent movies. Animation was top-notch as usual, the score was perfect, and did I mention how fucking hilarious it was because man this shit's a riot. To me it just felt like a truly creative and unique film and a wonderful work of art. Also there are talking dogs. The talking dogs are fucking awesome.

The movie is also really adorable

The fact that even a Pixar film where Larry the Cable Guy was one of the lead voiceovers couldn't fail basically leads me to believe that there's no way this won't be great. I should be seeing it sometime this week, I can't wait.

Oh man is this movie terrific! It's so gorgeous and heartfelt and thrilling and whimsical and...well amazing. Stunning animation, great characters, a wonderful plot with twists and turns and action and romance. It's funny and often quite sad but more than anything it's totally absorbing and compelling. Like the first half hour of Wall-E where the robot is trundling around that spectacular city all on his own, the shots of Carl piloting his house through the sky are mesmerizing. The villain is dastardly and Carl is a grumpy old man and Russel is, well, a little kid but all of the characters are really among the more complex Disney has ever crafted. This is the best movie I think I've seen all year. Really recommended!

Well, that was pretty great. "Tents are hard" was probably my favorite line. And Faye didn't have any trouble, though I think she's a bit young to have fully understood the point of the opening, which I guess is good.

This was actually the Pixar movie I was least excited about seeing ("least excited" being an extremely relative term, of course), but dang if it wasn't one of the best of them. It's just incredible how much they can make you connect to these characters using humor and sadness and little details (did anyone but me notice the slight growth of Carl's facial hair? what kind of animation studio does that?)

Also, how awesome was the cartoon before the actual movie? So good.

I loved the short before the movie. it was so sweet! Overall, this was a fantastic trip to the theater. My kid liked it and I just loved it.

I just got back from seeing this. It was absolutely wonderful. I continue to be in love with every single thing Pixar does. I'll agree, the opening is fairly brutal as far as Disney/kids' movies go, but I don't think it was nearly as traumatizing as Bambi.

*SPOILER*
The brutal part of Up still followed a fairly natural progression and you could more or less see it coming; in Bambi it pretty much came out HOLY SHIT WTF sudden.

I absolutely loved this movie. First off, Toy Story was my favorite movie as a kid, and is still definitely in my top three, so Pixar set the bar very very high from the start. The story and progression in this movie just had something that the last few Pixar movies didn't (the last movie I truly enjoyed was the Incredibles).

I wanted to see it in 3D, just for the added coolness, but I couldn't make that show tonight. Because I saw it so late, I got to sit right smack in the middle of the theater, which was nice too. First off, the short before the movie was great. Then the movie itself, was obviously beautifully animated, and just really good. Some of the things in it were legitimately, laugh out loud, f*cking funny! I'd most likely see this again in a theater.

It was nice, I really needed something to cheer me up today, and I'm so happy I went. Some of the parts were a little rough (the beginning is DEFINITELY not as bad as Bambi), but it was still a great movie. Highly recommended!

I may be in the minority, but Up beats Bambi. Probably because I never liked the kid to begin with.

I'd say while the death itself may have been more startling in Bambi, Up's opening montage leading to Ellie's death was sadder and had more emotional heft. The movie as a whole was the scariest, saddest Disney movie I can think of to be honest. There's a heck of a lot of sadness throughout, the occasional rough-by-Disney-standards violence (Doug being tossed around the cabin by the Alpha dog was borderline brutal) and some fairly frightening moments to boot (the whole final chase/fight scene was really intense, for example, even if some humor was mixed in.)

I thought it was wonderful. I accidentally saw it in 3D, and while it wasn't always perfect, it was pretty cool. I jumped when a digital piece of shrapnel flew at me. It's not something I'd intentionally pay more for, though.

None of the emotional moments felt contrived, and the opening scenes were some of the best visual storytelling I'd ever seen. I also thought it was pretty neat that the kid was Asian - I can't think of another kid's movie offhand with an Asian lead.

Pixar has yet to disappoint me. Other studios could learn a thing or two from their storyboard team. The animation was great, but the movie would still have been wonderful if it had been drawn with wax crayons, because the story was just perfect.

I think that the villains defeat in this was pretty damn dark. I can't think of a worse one since Clayton hanging himself in Tarzan.

It's ok, I didn't realize he was Asian until about halfway through when I noticed the shape of his eyes. But his mom/not-mom/whatever at the end was the big tip-off.

I think one 'eh' movie is acceptable with a track record like that one. Whenever I ask people to name Pixar films that weren't great (with the exception of Cars...) they usually name a computer animated film by another company like Dreamworks or something.

It's pretty telling that Pixar have become synonymous with computer animated movies.

up was amazing. it covered all it all. it actually made me feel conflicted over wall-e being my fav pixar movie (and maybe favorite movie).
pixar is an amazing thing. i wonder if they're gonna make up for the WALL-E best picture fuck up by having it at LEAST nominated?

Well Ben if you're wanting to see it in a cinema then you'll have to wait because this great country has decided not to realease it until september. You know what I have to say to that - FUCK THAT NOISE. but as angry as it makes me I can sort of see the reason for it, it's a kids movie so delay it until the school holidays, what really pisses me off though is 'Moon' which looks amazing is getting the same treatment. Delaying a kids movie I can almost forgive but seriously fuck that.

I though they were both really good films; although Up easily is the better of the two, Wall-E isn't far behind IMO.

Why we gotta fight about which one is better?

I actually really really loved Dug as a counterpoint to Wall-E, though. Whereas you have Wall-E as no dialogue and having to convey the emotion visually(and beautifully done, mind you), Dug (and the other dogs) was hilarious with every emotion being overly described. I don't know why but "POINT!" tickled me pink every time.

This was REALLY FUCKING GOOD. My favorite one so far. There was one little kid in the audience who kept saying whatever was on his mind, though.

"Uh oh, the balloons are gone!"
"Puppies!"
"The birdie is funny!"
