I think calling it a sequel will have the same effects on L4D as calling Vegas 2 a sequel had on the Rainbow Six series. Case in point, it sounds more like an expansion pack than a dedicated offering.

Then again, chainsaws.

So was Rainbow Six Vegas 2. And I liked the game, but it was built on exactly the same engine, mostly same weapons, models, gameplay. New levels. Sounds like what we'll be seeing here, as well.

And also change pathways through levels and whatnot.

I am pretty excited for the whole Natal dealio. And ME2, Alan Wake, COD:MW2, Dead Rising 2, L4D2, Last.FM and Milo.  And that's just Microsoft's press conference.  There's probably a fuckton more awesome things coming down the pipe.

Lots of L4D2 videos.

Frying pan (looks fairly unspectacular at this stage)
Axe + SPAS-12 (much better)
More axe action
Theater
Incendiary Ammo

but you have to watch this one just for the vocal clip around 1:49.
I am buying this game because of that.

Netal has me pretty pumped. Microsoft pretty much owned.

Nintendo. New Golden Sun, new Mario Galaxy (You get Yoshi) and a Metroid game made by Team Ninja. I don't want Samus to have boob physics.

Sony: A PSP with a slide up screen but no second analog even though it has all the room in the world for it?

I'm seeing a lot of hardcores bitching about Nintendo. Last year they got shit for putting out new tech (The Wii Motion Plus) with little info on major new games, this year they get shit on despite putting forth announcements for a sequel to one of the best RPG series ever and three games from two of their three tent pole series. They just can't win.

On the record, Metroid's got me fucking pumped. The Ridley fight looks nasty. My guess is it's a prequel, judging by the guy who calls her "Lady" bearing a striking personality resemblance to the commanding officer she names her computer after in Fusion.

Sony, for me, did rather well. FFXIV announced for sometime soon, the multi-platform games, their answer to Natal, which is promising, but the boy in there...I keep sensing a sex game coming out of this.

God of War III, ModNation both excited me immensely, and The Last Guardian, GT5, Uncharted 2

Better than last year.

You must be about the only person for Final Fantasy XIV. Another shitty Square MMO? No thanks. Honestly, I think Sony's was entirely underwhelming. The Go was leaked a week ago and MS introduced a better motion sensing technology yesterday, so the motion crap had no real thunder. Everything else was basically just reminders of stuff that's been in dev for like a year. Nintendo had all those game announcements and MS had some insane tech improvements, Sony really didn't have either.

I thought Sony's conference was better than Nintendo's.  Nintendo's just felt like a repeat of last years', except with a few 'core' titles thrown into the mix.  Sony demoed a ton of games, which while not enough to get me to buy a PS3, were substantially more interesting to me than Nintendo's lineup.  Their new tech isn't nearly as interesting as Natal, but it was cooler than the MotionPlus.  I mean, what the fuck was the deal with the Vitality Sensor anyway?  They just announced it, didn't really explain it at all, and moved on to the next topic.

Here, maybe. JRPG fans were orgasming at the news, that was for them, I guess. As for motion sensor stuff, I preferred Sony's, as you would be able to hold something as you swung it around. Both were basically catching up to the Wii and both will develop in time.

Nintento's games were the same old things again. MS and technology winning, sure, but games wise I'd say Sony won.

Sorry if I make no sense, it's almost 4am

And 4-player co-op on MGS: Peace Walker looks great.

And here's to hoping GoW III won't be stale! =D I'm favouring the Sony and Microsoft stuffs this time. The N's announcement was for like, 5 core Nintendo games, some more WiiFit gimmicks and that was it, right?

FFXI is gigantic pain in the ass of a game. It is utterly grindtastic and it takes a ridiculous amount of time to accomplish anything. And that criticism is coming from a dude who played WoW pretty much all the time at one point. Everything takes forever in FFXI, including installing the damned thing. You can and likely will die to a rabbit at some point, because with few exceptions the game is based upon forced grouping and because the game features some seriously epic rabbits. When it is all said and done, WoW may be a bit too easy, but at least there's things to poke around and do in the meantime while trying to get a group up and running. I've logged in and killed 15 minutes in WoW before and used that time "productively"; I doubt I'd bother even logging into FFXI without having at least an hour to kill.

Anyway, I liked the Ninja Gaiden revival as much as anyone, but I can't honestly say I'm as excited about the idea of a Team Ninja-Nintendo Metroid partnership as the guys from Penny Arcade apparently are. Basically, I like what they did with Ninja Gaiden in spite of the their fascination with incomprehensible plots, bad voice acting and gigantic breasts. I guess it just bothers me a bit because Metroid's exploration and rather austere tone has always been my favorite things about the series. I'm still not really comfortable with the ideas of a talking Samus and I've never really been interested in the whole Zero suit business and having to know everything about the woman behind the mask; I think there's something to be said for keeping things mysterious. I'm all for strong female characters and all, I just tend to think the video game industry is pretty bad at portraying them and would rather fill in the blanks myself.

TLDR version: A detailed but bad plot is often worse than a thin plot and with Team Ninja involved I'll always a bit afraid they'll make the game about Samus's cans no matter how many screenshots assure me otherwise.

I'm all for strong female characters and all, I just tend to think the video game industry is pretty bad at portraying them and would rather fill in the blanks myself.

This.

I have no doubt that the gameplay is going to be amazing, but I'm horrified at the possibility that Samus' defining characteristics are going to be manhandled (HUR HUR. I didn't notice that when I typed it, but now it's staying). One of the things I disliked about Metroid Prime 3, for instance, is how Samus is suddenly one of the "good guys" as such. She's supposed to have an isolated existence where everything is alien and nothing is friendly. That's what I loved about the other games. It was frightening much of the time, but the complete isolation and lack of human interaction served to help create the atmosphere.

Let's also take into consideration Samus' development. While still a child, Ridley razed her home planet and injured her almost to the point of death. A sole survivor, she was saved by the Chozo. This informs us that her social upbringing would have been mostly influenced by Chozo tradition and language, further cementing her isolation. Samus essentially has a less powerful understanding of human beings than of Chozo, and human beings have even less understanding of her.

The less known about Samus, the better. She's a bounty hunter by trade that works on levels unthinkable by us, both psychologically and morally. Something of the ultimate Lawful Neutral. She doesn't fight the Space Pirates for the greater good, or to save the galaxy. She fights the Space Pirates because the law and her occupation give her plenty of opportunity to impose vengeance on the ones that destroyed her home, and with it, any hope of having true interaction with those around her. Anything else is really superfluous. Other characters can be heartwarming, but Samus' characterisation is something rare for Nintendo and the gaming industry both - someone who was a victim of circumstance with absolutely no hope of reclaiming anything resembling what once was, nor building anything just as good. No matter how many Space Pirates she kills, or how many times she defeats Ridley, Samus has lost from the beginning.

And that is a part of what makes Metroid one of the most frightening game series ever. Plenty of games try to be dark through any number of means, but nothing comes close to despair. Gears Of War, for instance, was adult only by the technicality of violence. The plot and themes were juvenile at best, and although that doesn't stop it from being a fun, enjoyable game, it does prevent it from being truly immersive.

And that's why I fear the next Metroid game. It may very well destroy everything that makes Metroid just as much of an artwork as it is a game series.

In other news:

None of you utter cunts have even mentioned the new Alien vs. Predator game. I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO SO LONG ;_;

To be fair to Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Fusion started fucking with Samus's backstory a lot, lot earlier and that's what this one seems to be based on.

I certainly wouldn't want to touch it with a ten-foot pole (and I am a JRPG fan), but it seems to have made them money hand over fist.

Hm, fair enough. It IS a MMORPG and yes, I'll never play XI. But anyway, Golden Sun 3 yay!

Keep in mind that I don't really intend for my post to imply that the sky is falling or anything. I'll get the game and I'll enjoy myself; there's no way Nintendo's going to let that baby out of the gate without it being a well-polished experience. I'm just hoping they don't cut out some of the solo exploration in lieu of making it into yet another game where you primarily run around blasting aliens alongside your cardboard cut out of a sidekick, while some helpful but superfluous lady babbles tips at you over a communicator, that's all. We'll come out ahead here, I'm just not so confident that I am joyfully leaping into the arms of a friend over the announcement.

Something about the Sony motion control struck a suspicious chord in me so I ran to my bookshelf, pulled out my Unofficial PS2 Launch Guide (December 2000) and looked at the page about the PS2's tech capabilities. In the bottom right corner of Page 24, under the heading of "NEW PS2 TECHNOLOGY," there are two pictures. In the top one, a man is looking at a television and waving a giant foam wand in front of a camera hooked up to a PS2. The bottom picture is a screencap of what he's doing; that is, it's a picture of a morningstar being wielded by invisible hands.

They've been prepping this technology for at least nine years and it was originally for a different console.

I've been wondering this, who actually cares about motion controls?

It was pretty alright for the RE4 remake. Aside from that I'm pretty apathetic on the subject.

Casual gaming and/or paedophilia practice? (Milo will be abused and re-abused)

Not if they don't program responses to those kinds of behaviors.  Why does everyone think that Milo will be this gateway for weirdos?  He's not being made (and probably can't be made) to respond to every possible situation, so stuff like that is going to be the first to get nixed from the game.

Natal looks pretty frickin' sweet.

Although it'll probably cop some crap about how it's not really an original concept.

Now what I really want is that massive touch-screen combat control in R.U.S.E. =)

Guys, Golden Sun 3.

This news has made me really really excited.

Now I remembered Golden Sun. Holy shit that was the best game. Why didn't I get number two?

Oh, yes, that's right, they didn't sell it in my shitty backwards sump of a town. I spent ages going to the only gaming store that sold gameboy games asking for it.

If I download a visual boy advance-version (or any other emulator version) of the two games, do you think the character transfer mechanic you have on the cartridges are available? I know that the Pokemon games had a problem with that, but it should be possible to manage it in some way, right?

EDIT: Oh god I just realized that Golden Sun was included in the 1100 GBA games I downloaded. Oh yes.
