the red Black Stage shirts
The fuck?

Not too hard to understand.

The black stage shirts etc. have artwork predominated by the colour red, true stage with the colour blue, party stage with the colour green.

Wasn't what I meant, it just seemed odd that the black stage would be represented by red shirts. it was more of an incredulous the fuck than a confused the fuck. Now I see that it is just red on black, which makes more sense.

Oh right I see.

Nah, pretty much all the shirts are black. This is Wacken we're talking about. Even the condoms are black at Wacken.

The better to check for rips with.

All right, whose idea was it to have Coheed and Cambria at Wacken this year? Seriously, someone needs an unintentional visit to the mosh pit.

I dunno. I do know that this is the third time they were supposed to have Bullet for my Valentine, but it will be the first time they actually show up, if they do.

Then again, it's not actually a bad thing for there to be shitty bands like Airbourne and Bring Me The Horizon at Wacken. Bands on the Party Stage and Black Stage play simultaneously, and tent bands play over all the other bands, so you'd end up missing too much good music. For example this year I am probably going to have to miss Turisas to catch both Saxon and Korpiklaani, though I've seen all three before so I'll probably base it on how I feel. Got to admit that the lineup is rather bizarre this year though. The UK Subs?

Nodes of Ranvier

Their self-titled album, I strongly recommend. Their other albums I will not say anything about since I haven't listened to those yet. But this was what got me into metal when I was strongly into hiphop at the time.

Probably the same who thought it would be a good idea to have mediaval, viking and fantasy playgrounds with small stages for unknown or little known bands . Seriously, i love the middle ages, i am into reenactment and full contact sword fight in armour. I love Larping, and i love metal. But NEVER EVER i will mix that up. I will not attent mediaval meetings with Fantasy Costumes, nor bring a real metal sword to a Larp. And i would NEVER ever walk around on a metal open air either in my reenactment costume nor in a fantasy costume. Never mix it.

For extra credit, check out:

Amaseffer
Aghora
Belketre
Bone Awl
Burning Witch
Cauldron Black Ram
Church of Misery
Cirith Ungol
Cryptopsy
Deathspell Omega
Diablo Swing Orchestra

Hypocrisy

And I'm getting tired of listing bands, that's enough for now.

Edit: might wanna listen to most of these only after you've listened to Khar's recommendations earlier and gotten a taste for metal. Those are all decent bands, but imo, more like starter groups.

www.metal-archives.com is a great source for all things metal.

damn, thats a pretty hefty library of music! Looks like i got a ton of freakin' homework!

I'm pleased to see that there's fans of actual metal here. A lot of what I'd rec has already been mentioned here, so I'll just post my mid-year top 10 metal albums.

1) Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know (awesome trad. heavy metal with a hint of doom)
2) Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse (insane death/grind)
3) Asphyx - Death...The Brutal Way (rifftastic OSDM)
4) Fen - The Malediction Fields (atmospheric black metal)
5) Candlemass - Death Magic Doom (doom metal)
6) Jungle Rot - What Horrors Await (no-frills catchy death metal)
7) Gorod - Process of a New Decline (melodic/tech death)
8) Suffocation - Blood Oath (tech/brutal death)
9) Destroyer 666 - Defiance (blackened thrash, totally awesome)
10) Augury - Fragmentary Evidence (tech death) or Anaal Nathrakh - In The Constellation Of the Black Widow (insane death/grind/a bunch of shit), can't decide.

Asphyx is really good, I don't think I included them in my original post. Destroyer 666 is really awesome too.

If you like Destroyer 666, check out "Gospel Of The Horns", D666's drummer played on their first EP or album I think.

the Pax Cecilia - if Opeth wasn't so wanky, this is what they'd sound like.  You'd probably like Opeth, too.

Do these guys usually get brought up in metal discussion? I mean their second album I guess gets pretty metal but their first is basically textbook screamo.

Also Aggaloch bland? Really? Eh I guess you can have yr own opinion.

Can't really see the Pax as a "metal" band, but glad to see those dudes getting more love here. I haven't talked to them in at least a year now, but I still consider those guys to be some of my very good friends.

Another thing - just check out Nuclear Blast's youtube page. There's a lot of good bands signed to them, and some not so good ones too, but it's still worth checking out. Most of the Göteborg bands that's still kicking has signed up to them, and they've got a good mix of more and less melodic death bands, and some power metal bands as well (think Nightwish), if that's your cup of tea.

Since when did symphonic/power metal have special artistic integrity? I thought it was supposed to be like the cheesy pop of metal that everyone has a special guilty pleasure from.

I just don't understand how you could destroy something that never took itself seriously in the first place. It's like all of those rabid fangirls that had a fit when Nightwish changed singers. It's not like they were playing really high brow music in the first place people.

HEY! there's a lot of.... well...... fuck you then!

nah, i think all of your responses are great, i love hearing the members of this boards opinions on this stuff. it's like The Gauntlet, only you're not psychotic thrash-heads with no real ability to think objectively. you're actually pretty balanced taste wise.

though, there's a lot of good shit in symphonic/femme/power/WTF metal... and not only is it good. but its actually approachable. and it kills me that something this listenable/radio friendly gets no play in the US. i would take Unsun over Hollywood undead any day of the week.

that being said, sexism in serious(ish) music sucks ass, if ladies wanna jam, and they kick ass at it. why not give them a listen?

and so much of what I've come to learn is "high brow" music is shit, who care's how weird it is, or hard to play... if it just doesn't sound good?

and as for nightwish... I dont mind a listen, but the only real draw for me was Tarja's bomb ass vocals, and now that she's happily entered the "Pop" market. i feel a whole lot more honest listening to her solo stuff!

You misunderstand, I think. I like Nightwish, but I don't have any illusions about them. I like the later stuff more because it's more honest, they are a pop-metal band. That's what most power metal is. But I don't care, I'm not about to say something is worse or better just because it's clean and friendly.

Also, it's nice to see girls who are fans of metal, it's nice to see anyone who is a fan of metal.

Power metal kinda seems like pop metal until Persuader.

Seriously, power metal can be as brutal as anything given the right elements. I mean, Blind Guardian are more extreme than a fair chunk of thrash metal bands, for instance.

actually it really helps!  :-D

and as far as chicks being really metal, I do so enjoy Maria Brink (In This Moment).... though that Arch Enemy chick is so BROOTAL i feel like she's castrating me every time i listen.. :-o.

and as far as brootality in poppy metal. my buddy and I watched Inis Mona by Eluveitie.... we were simultaneously really impressed, and laughing our asses off.

(largely by the brootality of the bagpipe players face... but also by the hirdy girdy... that is not an attractive instrument...)

Folk/black/melodic death metal with or without bagpipes.

Each of these variables changes depending on the album you listen to.

So, my brother has asked for dragonforce CDs for his birthday. ...At least it means he probably won't be listening to Creed nearly as much.

Wrong Somewhere in Time. I was talking about the Iron Maiden album. You know, Wasted Years, Heaven Can Wait?

Oh, I think I've found the best Van Canto song. Other bands play, Van Canto makes funny noises!

[snip]....that being said, sexism in serious(ish) music sucks ass, if ladies wanna jam, and they kick ass at it. why not give them a listen?

and so much of what I've come to learn is "high brow" music is shit, who care's how weird it is, or hard to play... if it just doesn't sound good?

Well Edwinalink, i bet i know at least one female metal singer that got played up and down in the US Radio stations. But that was back in the 80thies. Remember Doro Pesh from Warlock?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQy0lliCNqE

And i bet she will be played again. Currently she sings together with a lot of other artists, trying out stuff. Like mixing "classic" and "metal", or singing love ballads together with Lemmy Killminster (Motörhead) or Accept Frontman Udo Dirkschneider... she is really one of those artists who just can do whatever the f.... she wants. Like doing that "Metal Lullaby Craddle songs for kids" CD... Just like AC/DC or Metallica..

If you really want to save money just get an old copy of Powerslave and up the tempo by about 30%

Conversely, if you're even looking for some good doom metal and are unsure of where to look, get an old copy of Powerslave and reduce the tempo by 50%.

that is the first time in my life I have ever heard her, or warlock... I think the fact they share the name with a shitty guitar may have something to do with that...

what is really annoying is that I'm finally hearing female fronted metal in Utah and its from this shittty ass band called ...halestorm...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j_yY8TElJI
and Lacuna coils REALLY shitty new album...this is why i refuse to listen to the radio... its survival of the most repetitve, stupid Drek...

Great commets from all of you guys. I could write a huge list but that would be too much work so I will write it in parts since I also want to write more than just a list, because names are useless if you don't write about the band.

- !T.O.O.H.!... A very very talented band that plays technical grindcore. It's in-fucking-sane and so are the vocals. such a sad fact thet this dudes are history since the label just fired them. The song I put is amazing great chorus and a delicious solo at the end... The drums are also a highlight since they are very very exact, never missing a single beat and also very technical too. Damn... I asure you guys, the last solo is an orgasm to me, almost beautiful and that's rare in grindcore.
- Acid Bath Along with Eyehategod this dudes from Louisiana are pretty much the big pioneers of what sludge/Doom stand for. A really crushing and also catchy as hell music. Those bluesy riffs are sexy. and also beautiful ballads but with very disturbed lyrics right here The voice of that guy is amazing... almost hipnotic. [I hope I wrote that word right]
- Ahab Funeral Doom Metal with a very original touch, this dudes sing about the ocean and most important: Moby Dick, yeah.... Moby Dick, At first that concept sounded weird to me, but when you hear this song you will HEAR the ocean, the wind and the huge motherfucker whale that is going to crush you. Hear this at night with no light. It's pretty damn scary at times, but beautiful.
- Akercocke Progressive Black/Death, think about Opeth getting more Black and with more groove growls that are harder to understand... and also more jazzy. The voice of that dude is amazing. and the combination of acustic guitarrs and blast beats is brilliant.
- Alcest It's difficult to say that this is metal. A better explanation would be Post-rock/shoegaze and with a little touch of Black Metal. a really beautiful band with breathtaking vocals and perfect for the summer  :-)
- Amesoeurs Shoegaze/Black Metal baby!!! This is another project from the dude from Alcest but this time is a girl who is the vocalist and I think she's amazing. And if you don't believe just check this so-to-speak ballad What a "warm" voice
- Anathema It's really difficult to sum up this band in just a few songs because there's too much to say. One of the big ones from the first Doom/Death scene from the beginning of the 90's. out of nowhere they decided to change the genre and being more and more rock. The evolution is quite interesting since there's a lot of stuff for everybody, for the ones that like aggressive music and also for the ones who enjoy beautiful music. See : first, Second , Third and last Their music always changes a little bit at times rock, then more ambient... just one thing is clear, the music is always quite depressive... but good stuff. The last song... the guy's voice on that one is the epitome of "hopeless"

I'm done with the A, I hope you guys will like it... If there's something that makes me happy is to share my music with those who want to discover and not just because they're bored
