I think it's standard for all university courses, but it certainly has to be for midwifery as the course is standardised across the country and regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. All student midwives are, in theory at least, receiving the same education and being held to the same standards so that our qualifications hold equal merit at the end.

Every exam I've ever done has had an external moderator too, to verify that the marking in-house wasn't biased.

The way it works here is there are external reviews of the course of studies every few years or so, called accreditation. They basically verify that the course the university provides is adequate and consequently that the degree you get is worth more than simply the paper it is printed on. As far as I know, there are no invidual reviews.

Yayy thanks! I'm so happy! Did not expect it at all, seeing how my grades have been pretty so-and-so lately. Kind of want to ask if they made a mistake but nope! I'll take it!

Thank you! Having your work showed in the Mack Museum is definitely not a guaranteed first though, there are several people in there and everyone gets graded just like all the other students. They choose whoever goes in hat room before all the work is even finished, and I shared the space with six other students as well. But yeah I'm so happy!

Someone contacted me from Dundee Uni and wants me to apply for postgrad studies there, and the degree sounds amazing! It combines visual art with humanities, so I could continue painting while also studying something theoretical like philosophy, film, gender studies, politics etc. No chance in hell I'll be able to afford it though, and I need to start real life stuff anyway, so no dice. Still, it's nice that someone saw my stuff and thought I'd be a good fit.

Also, Brad Pitt and Peter Capaldi are the new trustees for the fund to rebuild my school after the fire. Apparently Brad Pitt might also be at my graduation ceremony this Friday?

I know, it's so crazy lately! Did I tell you my friend who came to visit me brought and empty suitcase for me to fill, and I stuffed it with expensive art books and then the airport lost it? It got returned to her in the end, but man. I've had enough drama for a while!

Also look, Peter Capaldi is comforting us!

Have you checked if there is any scholarship you may take advantage of, with your extraordinary marks and all? Maybe the person who suggested it to you in the first place might help.

I'm going to email her, but I looked around their website and the only scholarship for international postgrad students is £1500, while the tuition is £13000. I also wasn't planning on doing any further studies right away, so it's not really a loss even though the degree sounds amazing. I really need to get started with finding a job, and I want to move to the states as soon as possible, so I need to get a full-time job so I can start saving money. Two more years in Scotland sounds great right now, but I think that's because I'm feeling sad about leaving the place and I'd only be postponing my life by staying here for longer.

This doesn't really matter to me, but I was kind of amused that the university announced a tuition increase on the same day they announced the football coach's salary would be increasing by $1 million/year.

I went to a "big 10" school and our athletics budget was crazy (our football coach makes >2 million a year for one thing) but it is all self funded.  Tuition does not pay for athletics, and the department actually run a surplus.  Though, there are plenty of arguments about if they are solvent enough to weather a bad season, a lot of their budget depends on the sale of football tickets, and they can charge a lot for them as long as the team is up... (Student tickets are $280 a season and depending on the game non-student tickets can go for $200 each plus people "donate" to be able to buy them early).

I've had discussions with sports fans on campus who point out that in addition to funding themselves, the big sports, like football, also make it possible for the non lucrative sports, like track and field or field hockey, to be well funded and offer scholarships.

I'm not sure that it's the case at other schools, but it seems likely that is would be.

My school is creating bursaries for us so that we can continue our artistic practice! From October through February we'll be getting £315 for living costs per week for 15 weeks, they will arrange studio spaces for us as well as 30 hours of tutor guidance, and up to £1000 in material costs. Everyone who applies is guaranteed to get this. And the best part is that they'll even arrange it for people like me who won't be living I Glasgow, so they'll either talk to an art school in Oslo and place me there, or I'll find a studio for myself and they'll fund it (I might actually have a studio already). This is so incredible! I was just planning on finding a full time job because I need to save money, but this way I can have a part time job, spend a lot of time in the studio and still have more money than I'd get from the job if it was full time. At the end of the 15 weeks we'll have an exhibition in Glasgow, I'm so happy!

I've signed myself up for a bunch of online courses, one of which is running at the moment but isn't really what I'd hoped - it is geared more towards daycare providers than I had realised, although it's interesting nonetheless. I need to get into the habit of sitting down and doing two or three hours of e-learning each week, even when I'm on placement, to get myself more into a habit of studying before the new academic year. I also need to remember to print out the completion certificates for my portfolio!

It's a weird model for an online school, what with all the faculty-student interaction outside of "class" time. But it is not-for-profit and legitimately accredited not only regionally by NWCCU but also by professional accrediting bodies for nursing and education. So it's not like you're applying to work for DeVry University or something.

Thanks.  There actually is no "class" time, it's a completely flipped model.  Faculty are more like coaches.

Actually, more like personal trainers.  The pay's not bad, but they want me to drop all my outside work.  Pay's not enough for that, so I guess I'll lie and just be overworked... my online adjunct teaching is completely asynchronous, so through the night works.

I'm almost done with my analysis. My dataset consists of 194 variables, the last of which are variables derived from variables derived from variables derived from other variables, and they all have ludicrously complex interactions with each other that involve at least three theories, two of which I know have been previously established by other research, and the other one I dreamed up myself and don't know if it's supported. And none of them are even relevant to my main hypothesis. Science, everybody.

Fuck I hope so, the project was already reduced in scope and my supervisor doesn't have a very high opinion of me in the first place. I kind of overextended myself with this project, in the past I've just used existing experimental paradigms but I coded this one from scratch so I didn't really know what to expect, other than the general effects that this kind of task usually shows.

We had a meeting for new design/tech majors yesterday, current majors required to attend.

This freshman described himself as "skilled" as a board op and carpenter. I instantly dislike him and in my experience people who say that aren't actually skilled. He's the board op on a show I'm designing sound for and now I'm worried that he'll fuck it up, especially because it will be pretty complex.

Me too, and I've barely even been out. :(

A PhD is looking pretty tasty, but I think I'd have a hard time making myself an attractive applicant this year.  <sigh>

I've dropped out of two grad programs (the last one was about a year ago after two months in it, but it pretty much destroyed me), so I'm wary about starting a third unless I know it's the field for me. The first two (education and law) were, respectively, "oh shit, I'm almost done with undergrad...I should go to grad school" and "oh shit, I've been out of college for a few years and I haven't had any good jobs...I should go to grad school".

I get the feeling about wanting to back to school occasionally.

I go lie down until the feeling goes away.

I want to go back to school because I love being in school. I don't want to because it's friggin' expensive and I already have 60K worth of student loans. However- I HAVE to go back to school soon in order to maintain my teaching certification.

Fat lot of good its done me so far.
