My most memorable football memory was also at the old wembley.
Division Two playoff final, one match for all the marbles (the marbles being promotion into division 1).
If City lost they could possibly sink into obscurity as players lose faith.
Gillingham score in the 81st minute and then again in 85th.
Bloody hell!
Dispondant fans begin to trapse out grumbling things like "typical city".
City score in the 88th minute, a few people caught on the stairs return to their seats, this could be interesting.
5 minutes of injury time on the board, Blue Moon starts to get louder as a few fans start to believe that tying this thing up isn't impossible.
90+3 and big boot football never looked so good, from the long ball the Mighty Goat lays it neatly in the path of Dickov who scores an amazing finish, 2-2.
Extra time was innocous so here comes the lottery of the penalty shootout
City score their first, Weaver saves!
City hit both posts with their second, Gillingham blast it over the bar
The next two are both comfortably scored, 2-1
Edgehill scores his penalty setting it up for some heroics for the young Nicky Weaver
He palms the Gillingham penalty around the post and sets of running.

I suppose I should preface this by stating that I am a Crewe Alexandra fan. As a Crewe fan growing up in Glasgow, opportunities for making it to matches are few and far between. When I was 13 or 14 my parents graciously decided to take a detour on the drive back home from holiday so that a family friend could take me to see a game. It was an FA Cup 3rd round tie. I didn't care that it was only against Telford United (a non-league non-entity), I was going to see My Team. I would have watched them play anyone.

We kicked off, and passed the ball about for the first couple of minutes, looking pretty comfortable until out centre back gave the ball away. Telfrod broke and won a corner. Our defence proceeded to stand still as a 5 foot 6 winger nodded the ball in at the near post. It didn't really seem like it mattered, they were only non-league. We'd comfortably win it regardless.

We played them off the park for the remaining 87 minutes, but every chance seemed to fall to our back-up centre forward, Michael Higdon. Every single chance seemed to end up a dozen yards over the bar. I have never forgiven Higdon for making that 90 minutes one of the least enjoyable of my sporting life.

That is my most memorable sporting memory. Sometimes I wish I'd taken the easy way out and just become an Auld Firm fan.

Well, my parents both hate football, so I first got into it when a family friend who lives in Crewe took me to a game while we were visiting. I was only 5 or 6, and I just got the bug I guess. I don't think they were expecting me to get into things quite so much and still seem bewildered whenever I visit and they find I still follow them.

That first game I saw them play, they lost 2-0 to Swindon. No idea why I thought supporting them would be a good idea.

It will be really quite interesting to see if Chelsea can win the league considering the fact that they aren't allowed to sign any new players, including I think loan players, for violating the rules during an attempt to sign a young player from Lens. If Didier Drogba is in fact injured, they might have to adjust a bit. With Joe Cole coming back and Yuri Zhirkov nearing fitness, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. My guess is they will play Joe Cole off Nicolas Anelka or utilise Salomon Kalou. I hope they win the league, I like Carlo Ancelotti.

I remember last season I saw Leeds versus Crewe at Elland Road. The game was pretty much even aside from Leeds scoring three improbably long range efforts in the first half. It ended up being 5-2, which flattered Leeds somewhat given the performance. Later in the season, Crewe almost recovered from another first half three goal deficit at Gresty Road, the game ending 2-3 to Leeds. Here's hoping Crewe are back in League One next year anyway.

They played an 18-year old Italian from the Academy whose name I can't remember recently in Europe, and they have Sturridge is it, from Man City. Assuming the transfer ban holds, and they have to operate as if it will until proven otherwise, I think they're going to be a bit more adventurous than most EPL clubs at blooding youngsters all of a sudden. They've got plenty of options up front, as do all the big teams, just most are largely unproven. As you said though their default plan B will almost certainly be a 4-4-2 with Anelka and Kalou up top.

The crunch time for Chelsea is going to be the ACN. At the moment they look casual and they've got enough of a squad to get by without signing anyone in January, so the only major factors for them regarding this season are losing their African players for 4-5 games, and any long term injuries. Agreed about Carlo too; I never thought I'd say this but if anyone wins the league this year that isn't us, I'd like it to be Chelsea.

Next season is another situation altogether.

Hey, my best friend of 5 years is a hardcore Vikings fan (actually, her whole family is). I myself, being originally from Chicago, am a diehard Bear. High-five for both our teams having awesome quarterbacks (Favre, Cutler) and halfbacks (Peterson, Forte) for once.

That's why I thought it was kinda funny when when some idiot writer at ESPN said that the only thing that could have been worse than Favre going to the Vikings would have been if Favre went to the Bears. Clearly, he doesn't understand the midwest. I know that Bears-Packers is the oldest rivalry in football and all, but at the same time, at least the Packers fans tend to have a grudging respect for Chicago due to their shared history. I think if Favre had gone to the Bears somehow, Packers fans would have been super depressed and secretly worried about how the season would play out.

But Favre going to the Vikings? I know Packer fans who reacted like they found out their mom just hooked up with Ron Jeremy. It's just disgust and horror.

That's true. The rivalries are very different, between all the teams in our division really. Packers-Bears are two of the oldest teams in the league and have an epic, heartbreaking, riot-enducing rivalry to match. The Bears/Vikings rivalry is more like two brothers duking it out for funsies. Ffrom what I know, whereas Bears fans respect the Packers, Vikings fans just outright hate them. And I think that sparks a lot of mutual bad feelings between both those teams, and could lead to more ill-feeling about their ex-star QB going over to them.

That being said, when I was watching the Bears-Packers season opener last weekend, I saw a helluva lot of cheese heads wearing the number "4," so who knows. It could be a very vocal minority that is horrified by the purple Favre is wearing, and the rest of the fans could just not care / had been desensitized by the Jets thing.

It's a tough call, really. To me, the Vikings-Ron Jeremy comparison still seems a bit more apt. Oh, definitely. Vikings fans love to antagonize the Packers. Plus, remember that I compared the Packers to someone who found out their mom is sleeping with Ron Jeremy, not to say, a betrayed spouse. Most Packer fans I know still love Brett Favre and aren't about to disown him. They just realize that they will never, ever hear the end of this if the Vikings continue to do well under Favre and there's no real comeback because Vikings fans are completely shameless. Also consider that I mostly know Packer fans who have the misfortune of living in Minnesota right now. There is no escape.

So, I grew up near DC. That's right, I had the Orioles, the Bullets (now the Wizards), the Capitals, United and the Redskins. Now I have the Nationals. I thought it would be tough to improve on the Orioles, but I was wrong. But the Redskins... Jason Campbell is not playing well, despite the fact that we now have an offensive line (not a great one, but we actually have people playing the positions they are supposed to play). Jim Zorn is not calling plays well, despite the fact that he insists nothing is wrong with the play calling. Also, what the fuck happened to my goddamned awesome secondary? I have a good team, I just need a quarterback and a head coach.

In a related story, when I did my fantasy draft I skipped wasting a pick on a defense. Instead, I've been scooping up whoever plays against the Rams off the waiver wire. Not a great sign for the good people of St. Louis.

Dear internet.

I am an Australian. Therefore there is only one kind of football (take a guess which one, it'll be fun). However, the new free sports channel is screening a few NFL games each week now and it's kind of interesting, in a tourist fascination-y kind of way. Therefore, I need advice; which team should I support this year? I have never been to America, so I have no allegiances one way or another.

Anybody else feel sorry for the cowboys? You built a big, modern, expensive stadium, you throw a party for 100.000 of your closest friends and a bunch of new yorkers led by the ugliest man in football come in and shut the festivities down ...
