As much as we appreciate you joining us on the bandwagon, could you have possibly come on board a bit earlier? ;)

Packers vs. Bears. These two teams have faced off 181 times since 1921 (the year the Packers joined the NFL).

The Bears lead the all-time series, 92-83-6. However, the Packers have won three of the last four.

The only year they did not face each other was 1982, when the NFL players' strike canceled both games that season.

They've only met once before in the playoffs - a Western Division championship playoff, December 14, 1941 (the weekend after Pearl Harbor). Bears won 33-14.

I can't believe it, but I was rooting for the Jets today and will also be rooting for them next week. That should tell you something about how strongly I dislike New England and Pittsburgh.

So, uh, remember when I was talking about a Bears-Packers NFC Championship game? Whoa.

AND it's at Soldier Field.

The butterflies are literally fucking each other in my stomach.

Bonus: Fuck the Pats. That made me so happy. Now if only Pittsburgh can manage to lose horribly.

It's going to be nauseating reading about how Bears-Packers is a rivalry for the next week. If it's a rivalry, it's the sort of rivalry the players appear to not give even a single iota of crap about. Which pretty much means it's not really a rivalry at all. Which, hey, is fine. Just quit telling me about the rivalry then, since nobody outside of Illinois or Wisconsin cares. It's a fan vs. fan thing which by definition makes it boring as shit.

Media bullshit≠the games.

Will I watch the games? Yes. I like football.

Do I give a shit about a rivalry that only really exists between fan bases I'm not a part of? No, not really. It's not particularly interesting and it doesn't even really reflect the attitude of the teams involved in this case. This isn't like Ravens-Steelers or Jets-Pats where the players and coaching staff involved are verbally sniping at each other or having to forbid their players from publicly making more foot fetish jokes. You have players saying things like "Yeah, we hate them... for this week," "It'll be competitive but respectful" or "Well, I know these franchises have a lot of history." Translation: It's the playoffs now so we can't really keep using the "We're trying not to look ahead" cliche to answer every question anymore and our fans will get pissy if they realize that after the game we'll happily text eachother about the best night spots. It's not even good theater like those old Pistons-Celtics games on ESPN Classic.

I figure I have a mild affection/appreciation for 6 or 7 NFL teams, give or take. Most of the others I'm pretty ambivalent about. This year my opinions are rather skewed because two of the teams I can follow the easiest but normally root against are both still in the playoffs. One has had good players get knocked out left and right while the other has consistently gotten breaks like playing against 3rd string QBs or hosting first 7-9 division winner at home despite being the 2nd seed while the 1st seed plays against a winning team. It irks me a li'l. With that said, I could see the Bears winning. They played Green Bay and the Jets pretty well in the last couple weeks of the season, so it's not like they're pushovers who got their completely on luck.

I have no illusions about the actual team members harboring any sort of serious grudge against one another. These guys change teams all the time, and picking up the theatrics of "grudge matches" when they move to a particular team is good for business. That being said, the rivalries make watching the game more enjoyable for me. I watch the playoff games that my team isn't in to see who will be continuing on, and its just an objective study of two teams, and thats boring as all get out. The willing suspension of disbelief is as important in franchise sports as any other form of entertainment, and I let myself get psyched about my team beating other teams that they "hate".

Mike Singletary looks like he could end up as the Viking's linebacker coach. I kinda like the idea. I find him immensely entertaining and struggling as a head coach just might mean that being an assistant is the best place for his particular skill set. Some people are just much better motivators and teachers than organizer, after all.

Yeah, Singletary's one of those cases where I could easily see him being a great minor coach or even defensive coordinator someday, but as a head coach he was just simply not good.

Smith is almost certainly gone after this year, but there isn't really an obvious replacement for him and this QB draft class kinda blows. If Denver really wants to take their chances with the Tim Tebow Experience, then the Niners should take a very good look at Kyle Orton. He's got flaws, but there aren't a whole lot of other decent options. I wouldn't want the Niners to spend the 7th overall pick on one of several underwhelming college QBs when there are other holes that need filling.

I agree. There is now exactly no team left in the play-offs that I actually like. I should've kept my mouth shut.

On the other hand, I did predict a superbowl win for the Jets in september, and, much to my dismay, this might still come to pass.

Sorry, they only allow locations within the continental United States (and, technically, Canada) to have NFL football teams.

And the Sharks are a hockey team, last I looked.

Also, I think it's kinda de facto world championship now that NFL Europe folded. Unless...hey Ryan, do you guys want to play the Saints or something?

Yeah Arshavin is a waste of space atm. Has been for far too long for my liking. The sad thing is it's the one time Wenger's spent loads for an older player and now he'll probably never do so again.

Becchio not playing was a definite bonus yeah.

B52 with an inch perfect cross for van Persie, might be too soon to say the tie's over but it's comfortable now.

i know they had a similar intra-league club championship world cup thing in basketball at least once in the mid-90s, when basketball was at the height of it's world fame. I remember this because the Perth Wildcats played the Houston Rockets.

Ah, Wikipedia of course has the goods. It was called the McDonald's championship, ran nine times and was won by an NBA team each time.

Also, is anyone here a Maple Leafs fan, because I'm in a mood to gloat. (14:00 left in the 3rd, TOR 0-7 NYR)

The Rugby season is only a few weeks away! Seems kind of weird given that the spring tour only just finished in November but anyway in February the brand new shiny Super 15 is starting and that's awesome because finally there's a team from Melbourne! They played a trial match against Tonga (really the Tonga B-team) last weekend and while they were understandably a bit shaky in their first ever game the tries they scored were all absolutely top-shelf. I'm getting excited.

I kind of wish Alex Smith would hold on another year so the Niners could grab Andrew Luck in 2012 draft.

I think even if the QB slot remains a massive black hole (which is definitely possible), the Niners are unlikely to be bad enough to go first overall in the draft. Unless Luck gets hurt or has an absolutely miserable season next year, he's almost certain to go first overall since he's the most hyped, can't-miss QB prospect in years and good quarterbacks are more valuable than ever in the NFL right now. Every team likely to be bad enough to go first overall in 2012 (off the top of my head: Bills, Browns, Panthers, Redskins) also has a QB problem. In other words, I think there's roughly a snowball's chance in hell of Luck being in a Niner uniform on draft day next year. Then again, I thought the Niners would be a playoff team this year... and it didn't quite go that well.

Harry I'm also pretty excited for the Super 15s season to start. It's pretty good timing too because it's not long after the NFL wraps up for the year.

It'll be interesting to see how the new conference system pans out. I think I'll end up having to take more notice of Australian teams that aren't the Force and completely ignoring the New Zealand conference until finals time.

Absolutely. It's a measure of character that you support a team through thick and thin. It was a rather weird feeling being in Calgary for the start of the season when the Flames cranked out some extremely disappointing performances, and hearing the media and fans basically lockstep in their opinion that nobody should be going to games until they win some. What fickle bullshit.

(to be fair, the Leafs haven't won the Cup within most people's lifetime. Also the guy is a Preds fan and they've never ever won a Cup)

I'd scratch the Browns off that list, as they're pretty heavily invested in Colt McCoy (for good reason).

I think they'd still feel forced to either trade down or keep him as an asset though. The upcoming labor dispute will almost certainly result in a much flatter rookie pay scale, so they wouldn't necessarily be bleeding money the same way the Chargers were when they had to make their Brees-Rivers decision.

The Brees-Rivers situation is the precedent that leads me to think that Denver might cut Orton loose, but even so Tebow doesn't have the obvious upside of Rivers. Then again, Orton isn't as good as Brees either, so maybe Denver will think they have nothing to lose since they're not in contention with things the way they are.

Mostly I just really dislike Tebow and hope he crashes and burns in the NFL, and Orton would be better for the Niners than just about any QB option they're likely to have, so it would be the best of both worlds for me.

Orton is basically the best quarterback to have if you're rebuilding your franchise. He makes smart decisions and moves the ball well. He's certainly not playoff-caliber, but he's a good placeholder if you're having a couple of really off seasons. I think if Denver wants to turn Tebow into the franchise QB they want, they have to make him sit the bench for a season or two. Of course, it always helps to have an actually great QB to learn from while you're doing that, instead of someone perfectly average like Orton.

Sorry, I think I'd rather jump off the CN Tower than ever be a Leafs fan. I mean, they've never won a Cup in my lifetime.

Jesus christ, if that's how you base your fandom, you must have excellent bandwagon jumping skills. My Bruins haven't won a cup in my lifetime (or for that fact, since my parents were in high school), and I'm still rabid about them.

No, no - see, I'm a Predators fan. And, before that, I was a Blackhawks fan (before WWW lost me forever with the crap he spread after the Chelios trade). I hate TO, SO, ANYTHING "O".

Leafs fans tend to be the most arrogant bunch in all of hockey. They're like a mixture of Yankee fans with the failure level of Cub fans.

I agree whole-heartedly that the best thing for Denver to do would be to keep Tebow on the bench and stick with Orton for at least another year. The problem is that I think Tebow starting for the last few games of the season while Orton was hurt is going to end up forcing the issue. Whoever the new coach is, he'll be under tremendous pressure from the fanbase and local sports media to start Tebow based on the performance in those games (especially the one against Houston), whether or not it's representative of anything. And if they do cave and start Tebow then Orton suddenly becomes an extremely expensive player to have riding the bench. That being said, for their part ownership doesn't seem to be sold at all on Tebow being the full-time starter. If I had to guess I'd say Orton stays in Denver, but it would be better for the Niners (presuming they could land him once he hits the free agent market) and worse for Tebow if they cut him, so I'm hoping for short-sighted sports fans to pressure them into doing something dumb.
