I plan on only watching halftime strictly because I wanna nail Katy Perry and I don't give half a flying shit about hand egg.

American football is best football! You take that back!

I highly doubt I'm gonna get much support on that one here.

If you wanna see a bunch of people jog around the whole time then sure. People also don't take into account that because people don't wear pads in rugby they don't hit each other as hard. Don't get me wrong, rugby's still more badass, they just don't run into each other as hard.

But I am biased, I did play American football for 14 years and throughout college. Probably not the best idea, what with the chronic back pain and messed up hips I got now. Also, pretty sure bunch of concussions.

Funny.  Whenever I hear Katy Perry, I want to drive nails into my ears to get rid of that over-autotuned noise.  If I want horrid noise, I have Merzbow to listen to.

I played American Football, and I played Rugby, in every respect, Rugby is the superior sport. Albeit I played briefly on a Marine Corps base team, so we still hit pretty fucking hard.

Spain is first in its group of the Handball World Cup moving on to 1/8th finals. Also, Argentina - Russia for the last spot of their group and Egypt with the possibility to throw one of the regulars under the train. DIS GON B GUD.

Maybe in the 1910s, when they used actual soccer fields for it. Modern day Olympic Handball is played indoors and people get thoroughly fucked up in the process because it's a contact sport. Also it's 7v7 and there are different levels of penalties and shit.

It's been proved that it's impossible to call all fouls that happen in a game by a human being

Ruleset can get a bit messy, but I'm just going to say that I used to play that sport (in the center and wing positions), Spain is twice world champion (yay) and german handball teams are THE worse kind of people in the planet. Including team Germany.

Which is actually going past as group leader when they shouldn't even be in this cup. Talk about favoritism.

There's been career ending injuries in rugby as well. But then, so has football, cycling, judo, tennis, shinty, and just about any other sport. The issue isn't just that an injury might happen but having a proper understanding of the risk of that sort of injury occurring.

The thing I don't like about team France in handball is that they really are scrubs under all their "titles" and "prowess" and shit. Because I've seen how the refs treat them. It's ridiculous.

(click to show/hide)

The rant under the spoiler comes because I've just seen some of the poorest refereeing of all time, in a game where France had the game literally given to them by way of just not calling what should be called when dudes in white jerseys did it. There were elbows to faces that were played off, fouls that weren't called but got a Swedish guy out, 4 penalty shots in 10 minutes (9 in the entire game), 10 minutes of absolute ref blockout to Sweden... Just horrible. The only thing they called in favor of Sweden those 10 minutes was a chokeslam.

I'm dead serious. A french dude went for the chokeslam on a Swedish dude.

And it's been like that since World Cup 2009. They even went 3 years without losing a single match after that, and I can say that my town team could do that as well with the ref work they were given.

The worst part is that they're always praised as if they were amazing by everyone, because they do have a nice record and a bunch of titles, but every single game the commentators leave like "But they were given the game tho. What a piss poor ref work". It's constant. And I hate that.

Seriously, if 9/27 of your goals are penalty shots with no player penalty assigned to them you're not a world class team. You're a bunch of spoiled brats who are given games on the cheap.

Handball is one of those sports that the US does not excel in, because the skill set that is most useful in its play is almost identical to that of an actual American-made sport where people get paid a crapload of dollaz to earn the right to be whipped by San Antonio in the NBA finals.

Handball players are bulkier and slower (and usually slightly shorter) than Basketball players. And in fact, I'd say that the handball skillset is more suited for playing american football.

So what you're saying Osaka, is Europeans are wasting perfectly good rugby players.

No, we're wasting perfectly good Handball players. Gosh GM, it's like you don't even read what I'm writing :P

Actually, handball success relies on ball speed and explosiveness. I'd say they'd be, at most, slightly above average rugby players. With the exception of centers, they'd probably be good.

Then there was this Argentinian acquaintance I had who was pretty much average at both sports  :psyduck:

Side note: You really really really really don't want to play Rugby in Sweden, at least during winter.

I have a cousin-in-law who is one of the coaches of the US National Futsal team. Imagine handball, except it's actually soccer (what non-Americans call "football").

For Americans, imagine playing soccer indoors on what's essentially a basketball court.

They always muck it up on TV though. Best sport to watch live, but, for me, it suffers from the problem of the camera zooming in too far. So like most sports on TV I guess... Our TVs are huge now, why do we still need to zoom so far in?

HD TV was built for hockey, with the wider screens and better detail.

But oh, to actually be at a game, in the arena, seeing the ice, the speed of the players, the puck, the hits...

And I just like seeing everything. For instance, I'm used to working with football film and you can't diagnose anything with how close they zoom in.

Would you believe that at one time you couldn't change lines on the fly? Granted, it was about 90-100 years ago.

After growing up on Canadian Football,  I am blown away by just how much time American Football takes between plays.  It's ridiculous, and offputting

US football is the only sport I follow and am passionate about. Go Patriots!

And as soon as I say this to anyone, people always go out of their way to tell me that I am wrong. That soccer is much more interesting. Or that it's not physically demanding so it doesn't count. So annoying ...

My biggest gripe is all the faking injuries and flopping in soccer. Granted, other sports do it to, but it doesn't affect the game nearly as much as it does soccer.

Also, American football helped me with a lot of self esteem issues, but that's something else entirely. And yeah, go pats.
