I wouldn't worry about icing the tart if I were you. Just eat the tart.

Then eat the icing.

Problem solved.

Also, re-reading my last post it occurs to me I shouldn't say Y'know so much. Y'know?

I know what you mean. I think I've seen, maybe, three episodes of House on TV. I don't want to wait months for it to come out over here so I download them all. Being a Brit has its down sides.

It was interesting, but I'm waiting to see if they actually change the show.  House is usually good about not doing things for ratings, but changing the main character in a sort of major way is very risky.

I'm hoping he'll still be a jerk, but in a much more compassionate 'Call you an idiot and then give you a hug' kinda way. I have a lot of confidence in Hugh Laurie's ability to pull it off in a believable fashion. And House has always been good with small children. Maybe that side will come out more.

Now, am I hoping here or just wishing?

I would say some of my favorite posters on this forum hardly qualify under any manner of indie title, such as Paul or Mr. Hocking.

I might be indie if I listened to music. I think I heard some songs by the Killers and liked them, are they indie?

I don't know. Whenever I try to fit in with people I think are Indie I put Otis Taylor or Mark Ronson on.

I don't think they're particularly Indie but I'm trying to strike a balance between neither of us wanting to take a crowbar to the other's music collection.

man if I'm not mistaken Jeph hasn't even talked about music in the comic for ages. The closest he's gotten is the newsposts or the character's t-shirts.

He wrote somewhere that he was listening more to metal than to indie these days. Hint: the only interesting part of the comics forum is Jeph's posts in the ask Jeph thread.

I don't think I belong to the crowd, really, but I've kinda just stopped trying. People have a thread about what they wear, and the people in the music forums says that In Flames first albums were better than the last ones (can you imagine?), so I stick to the places where there's interesting stuff going on.

oh yeah I forgot about that, that is pretty lame

Since the only two shows I watch regularly are the Daily Show and the Colbert Report and both are on Hulu, I have no desire to pay the cable company an exorbitant fee on top of what I already pay for internet access.

You know it's weird because I feel like I've always had a reason for being here except for those times when everybody's talking about webcomics. I don't like webcomics and never have. I have yet to run across a webcomic I think is good. It's like for all of 5 minutes I realize that I'm living amongst the lizard people. And then as abruptly as it started things are back to normal.

I personally think we are well and past postcount padding at this point. No one cares about postcounts that much anymore?

also, thread, whatever.
Dude who started thread I did not hate you now you are a bit annoying? You said you wanted to be part of this place but really what does that mean?
I guess the question to ask is: do you find/make friends other places by starting conversation by proclaiming a manifesto of who you are why you feel ostracized and who you want to be friends with?

Well, not to be a padded postcount Slick, but all I was really trying to do was find the people on the boards who maybe felt the same way I did. I was going for support-group rather than ostracized and persecuted minority. I mean, even an epidemic of friendship needs a small cluster of initial cases.

Think of it like Go.

I don't know about everyone else, but when I don't like something I stop doing that thing.  (Except for y'know, work, but they pay me money, so it's a trade-off.)  I'm not so much making a suggestion here as wondering why you'd want to hang around when there are probably plenty of other forums with communities of people you would be more interested in talking to.  This isn't just you I am talking about, either.  I've seen a few people saying similar things and I always wonder what is keeping them here bitching about cliques and indie hipsters and so forth.  There are plenty of forum-fish in the internet-sea.  You don't have to force your square peg into this round hole (and I mean, if you insist on doing so at least use some lube)

It's not that I don't like it here. I just wanted to find some of the people here who had a lot in common with me, figuring that they'd be easier to talk to than the people (who seemed to make up the majority of the board population) whom I have little in common with.

That is cool.  Generally the way you do that though is by starting threads about things you like and seeing if other people talk about it.  Forums are a game you kind of just play by ear.  You don't really have to metagame them.

I think that at least one good thing came out of this thread though, and that is the physics/science thread.

Okay, I think some of you are being a little too soft on this thread.

This thread screams "I want to be popular without having to actually work my way up a social ladder."

Seriously, if you can completely miss what is going on these forums as hard as this thread did, there's probably a very good reason you're not amongst the "in" crowd, such as there is one.

I will be the first to admit: yes, this forum is very clique-y. Nobody should bother denying it. There are many among us who get VERY defensive and start making in-jokes when occasional new folks who don't meet their criteria of strong boarding step even a toe out of line. I will readily admit I've been guilty of this more than my fair share.

That said, I think the guy completely missed the actual cliques. Yes, there are a fuck ton of us who speak routinely off the forum, have big rocking parties with each other and sleep on each others' couches. That doesn't happen because we like the right music or because we wear some certain style. Anyone who knows me on here knows that I'd have left here right quick if that were the case.

I wear T-Shirts and jeans, primarily. I loved Metallica's last album. I'm terrible at guitar, hate just about any film without major studio backing, play WoW and follow baseball religiously. That said, just about everyone on the forum who posts routinely knows who I am, be that for better or worse.

That's because this isn't High School. People aren't going to toss you out on your ear because you're not the model of their opinions. You know how I, as a person who doesn't share interests with a good chunk of the forum, got to be known on here? By actually talking to people and getting to know them rather than charging in and taking an "I don't need you" attitude.

That and I tend to yell a lot and just like being belligerent for the sake of it. People who do that go far in life.

OP I hope after reading this post you understand that all you have to do to fit in here is care way too much about an internet community for normal people to be comfortable with.

I yell too much and I like being belligerant for the sake of it also.

This thread is why I like it here, not the starting of it, but the calm reasonable way everyone has posted after that. It's nice.

I like heavy as hell music (The only forumite I know personally I met at an Unsane show.) I mostly listen to soundtracks from the 80's & Stevie wonder records at the moment. I like Toto & Journey & Styx with no irony.

I do like comics & webcomics & marmite.

I also liked that there was a knitting thread, although as I don't knit socks or hats I tend not to go in there much (Also american knitting has different words. Confuses me.)

I find that the Geeky/Nerdy stuff is less fanboy, the music stuff less obnoxious and the silly stuff funnier. I like it here. I like the level headedness. I have no idea how much I have in common with more than maybe one person?

I can think of way worses places for being left out if you don't agree with certain members, that's why I don't post there anymore. I post here.

(I also think I may be a hipster, just not an indie one, I may need to seek help...)

est, I have a tin ear and am terrible at judging stuff. I guess the creation of this thread proves that. Still, kinda cool to have something I did referred to as meta-gaming. Thanks!

Hat! Unfortunately I don't do obsession. I kinda do passionate but that's about it. Closest I ever came was Buffy... Although, come to think of it, I came out of that wit my best friends so... Ummm... Ok!

Eliza... What are you for, BTW? Are you an attempt at passing a Turing test? I like the way people are being polite. I may have committed a board faux-pas and been a trifle elitist seeming but people really have been nice about it.

I am now going to listen to some MC Hawking and YT Cracker, because Nerdcore is awesome. As are you guys.

Sometimes when you're going off on one about your conception of the ghetto in The Wire constituting a pre-modern space and how that relates to Zygmunt Bauman or you're half delirious because Martin Sorrondeguy just name-checked Gary Floyd on stage it's nice to be around people who don't give you a blank look.

That Anamanaguchi's pretty good. Not sure I'd want to listen to it every day but it reminds me of my misspent ZX Spectrum youth.

I think people still freak out and get... Confrontational on here, I just think most of the time they realise that if they do, most of the other people will take a dim view of it. Social disapproval is a powerful motivator.

normal people aren't generally comfortable with the idea of having people you know on the internet that you do not know in real life

so i guess if you actually post on here you fit the bill for that one
