Now I can't tell if I've actually offended people and you're all really upset or you're being funny.

Please do not think that we are offended because it is not true.  Unless I'm mistaken, this forum is generally level-headed

Let's start with Top Gun.  I love Top Gun.  Show of hands?

No way, if we are talking about the best 80s movies Robocop wins.

EDIT: Wait no Back to the Future was way awesomer.

EDIT2: Y'know what, pretty much every 80s sci-fi movie other than Short Circuit 2 defeats every other 80s movie.

EDIT3: I declare that Ghostbusters counts as sci-fi.

I don't really like Top Gun or Robocop.

You know what bugs me? When people call Highlander sci-fi. That's really dumb.

Bassist, do not resist. Goose was cool and everyone should be honoured to be referred to by his nickname/handle/RIO designation whatever. I love using the old "I feel the need" line whenever possible. Plus, inverted communications with a MiG in a negative 3G maneuver is cool.

Thank you KickThatBallProf. I feel a lot like Raven a lot of the time on-line... You think you've been polite but the other party now believes there is a blood feud between your families after an exchange about paint brushes... Or you feel charmed by a lovely individual who was actually calling your mother a tart.

Aliens was an 80s Sci-Fi movie. It was also very good. How many other 80s movies got their own technical manual?

When people call Highlander sci-fi. That's really dumb.

Well in fairness Highlander 2 decided they were all aliens.

Of course Highlander 2 sucks and we should all pretend it doesn't exist.

Or designs by H.R. Giger.

I will take the Top Gun advice under advisement.

I often feel like I don't belong here, but certainly not for any of the reasons listed... I've just spent too much time among the stupid people who make up most of the rest of the internet, and this place makes me feel out of my depth now

I wonder if that's my problem, Fiend?

Then again, it may just be that discussions on this board - that I have so far encountered - tend to cover topics outside of my realm of knowledge.

Since this is the thread for people who don't belong here the obvious solution is to ban everyone in it.

Scarred is actually one of the reasons I created this thread. Once I saw his outfit I just knew that I would never truly fit in.

Yeah, I'm afraid that's a bit of a miscalculation on your part.

I mean, let's review here. Scarred:

1. Attended some thing called Bumbershoot.

2. While wearing rainbow "manties."

3. Realized a Trojan booth could help finish his ensemble.

There's nothing wrong with any of that, but it ain't exactly a universal experience. In some parts of the country such a person would be suspected of coming from circumstances.

I think a lot of what I wanted to say has already been said, but I'll say it anyway because fuck you all, the First Amendment says I can.

A lot of times I feel like I don't fit in in places around here. The Comic Discussion subforum makes me feel angry out of place, because I don't really like the comic that much any more and also don't seem to obsess about it as much as those guys. The Computer forum reminds me how absolutely hopeless I am with computers. The Music forum is almost completely full of topics that I don't care about. Even in this subforum, here I spend most of my time, there are threads that I look at with a puzzled expression. It's gonna happen wherever you are. How I counter that is I don't read the threads that are of topics I don't care about, or I go to wikipedia and look up what is being talked about. Also, normally if I don't like something, such as an outfit in the fashion thread or soforth, I generally just don't say anything; if I say "oh god that is ugly" then the people who do like it are just going to tell me I am wrong and I will go about wearing clothes I like to wear anyway because they are people on the internet and can't really do anything to stop me.

Maybe you should try not to worry about fitting in so much? As tommy has said, this place is full of different people, and we don't talk about all our interests all the time, so maybe just trying to participate so we know a bit more about you and get to know your personality or sense of humour is all you really need to do. I can see why this place can be intimidating, but it's not like you will have noting in common with everyone here.

nobo, I get the feeling that the people here are good people. We all like QC so we have that in common, and they mostly seem to be polite, decent and - in the case of the ladies - rather attractive. I'd like to make some friends from amongst that number and expand the small circle I have. Of the 15 or so friends I have in the world, I made 13 or so of them on web-forums like this one. Just because we don't share a taste in clothing or music or movies doesn't mean that we can't be friends and this thread was an attempt to try and find people who like QC and perhaps do like the same things as me.

Ok, I get where you're coming from here. Sounds like you're just looking for buddies and were a little intimidated because you thought everyone was all indie and you wouldn't fit in, but as you can see that is not the case.

Anyway, you can count me as a buddy. My PM box is always open if you want someone to talk to.

What movie is that one?  I know I don't watch "Temple of Doom" much, but I don't think there was much CGI.  I've seen "Raiders" and "Crusade" a bunch so I know it wasn't in those.

I don't really know the posters here that well (I don't belong here)
I've never been to meebo (I don't belong here)
I haven't seen the new Indiana Jones (I don't belong in this topic)
I have a naive and relatively clean mindset (I don't belong on the internet)
I guess I like that indie junk (I do don't do don't don't belong here?)

I think it's time for me to find a 90's movie about not fitting in on Lifetime.

Okay, I think some of you are being a little too soft on this thread.

This thread screams "I want to be popular without having to actually work my way up a social ladder."

Seriously, if you can completely miss what is going on these forums as hard as this thread did, there's probably a very good reason you're not amongst the "in" crowd, such as there is one.

I will be the first to admit: yes, this forum is very clique-y. Nobody should bother denying it. There are many among us who get VERY defensive and start making in-jokes when occasional new folks who don't meet their criteria of strong boarding step even a toe out of line. I will readily admit I've been guilty of this more than my fair share.

That said, I think the guy completely missed the actual cliques. Yes, there are a fuck ton of us who speak routinely off the forum, have big rocking parties with each other and sleep on each others' couches. That doesn't happen because we like the right music or because we wear some certain style. Anyone who knows me on here knows that I'd have left here right quick if that were the case.

I wear T-Shirts and jeans, primarily. I loved Metallica's last album. I'm terrible at guitar, hate just about any film without major studio backing, play WoW and follow baseball religiously. That said, just about everyone on the forum who posts routinely knows who I am, be that for better or worse.

That's because this isn't High School. People aren't going to toss you out on your ear because you're not the model of their opinions. You know how I, as a person who doesn't share interests with a good chunk of the forum, got to be known on here? By actually talking to people and getting to know them rather than charging in and taking an "I don't need you" attitude.

That and I tend to yell a lot and just like being belligerent for the sake of it. People who do that go far in life.

Jon gave us a good example of what taking time to ease into the forum affords. I read his inane and garbled multi-post ejaculation and thought "goddamn, this shit be wack. but its jon, so i can deal." If a new person did it, I would probably dismiss them as just shitty dudes or ladies. Also, Meebo is an excellent way of getting acquainted with the forum regulars. However, one thing QC has always been excellent at doing is locating tryhards and being less than pleasant to them. People that tend to just be themselves do quite well. I would say some of my favorite posters on this forum hardly qualify under any manner of indie title, such as Paul or Mr. Hocking. Each still gives astounding contributions to the forums they post in either through excellent knowledge, analogy and picture (Paul) or being old, predatory, and making everyone uncomfortable (JHocks). Of all the "regulars" here, I probably come just about closest to fitting the typical indie/hipster tags, yet just because those are my particular ways of dress and likes does in no way limit my capacity to interact and enjoy the company of those that aren't as stereotypical as myself.

But, hey. Mark, I like some things you might like! I enjoy Queen and the Beatles a lot! I like R. Kelly in a non-ironic way. I watch and root for my schools basketball and football teams. I don't actively watch much sports, but I always keep up to date on scores and standings for my favorite clubs, be it Chelsea or the NY Jets. I enjoy doing stuff like hiking and camping. I really enjoy cooking and grilling, especially when it involves pasta or large hunks of beef. I sometimes play video games on my computer, ranging from MMOs to FPS. I repair small lawnmower and tractor engines for a hobby, and while I don't really have any desire of spiffing up my own car, I am fascinated in the mechanics of how. There are many other things I enjoy a lot too! You might find that many of these indie kids are possessing a depth to them far greater than their appearance may hint at.

Y'know, at first I was scared this thread would really upset people. Y'know, based on the first few responses. But hey, things are looking up. I'm actually feeling a little more confident now. Thanks guys!

Also, I have to remember the comic is not the forum. Just because Jeph appears not to like the Sex Pistols or Friends doesn't mean everyone here doesn't.

I'm not much of a sports fan.

Unless it's Robot Wars.

I guess the main thing to remember here is that the comic has basically no effect on what people talk about. I mean I can't remember the last time someone mentioned it other than in this thread, and trying to start a discussion on it is actually sometimes frowned on because there's a whole other set of subfora for that.

Also hey, I don't belong here either! I should be cleaning my room and icing a bakewell tart! GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN, GIRL. (My room is not in the kitchen.)

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
