Jon gave us a good example of what taking time to ease into the forum affords. I read his inane and garbled multi-post ejaculation and thought "goddamn, this shit be wack. but its jon, so i can deal." If a new person did it, I would probably dismiss them as just shitty dudes or ladies. Also, Meebo is an excellent way of getting acquainted with the forum regulars. However, one thing QC has always been excellent at doing is locating tryhards and being less than pleasant to them. People that tend to just be themselves do quite well. I would say some of my favorite posters on this forum hardly qualify under any manner of indie title, such as Paul or Mr. Hocking. Each still gives astounding contributions to the forums they post in either through excellent knowledge, analogy and picture (Paul) or being old, predatory, and making everyone uncomfortable (JHocks). Of all the "regulars" here, I probably come just about closest to fitting the typical indie/hipster tags, yet just because those are my particular ways of dress and likes does in no way limit my capacity to interact and enjoy the company of those that aren't as stereotypical as myself.
But, hey. Mark, I like some things you might like! I enjoy Queen and the Beatles a lot! I like R. Kelly in a non-ironic way. I watch and root for my schools basketball and football teams. I don't actively watch much sports, but I always keep up to date on scores and standings for my favorite clubs, be it Chelsea or the NY Jets. I enjoy doing stuff like hiking and camping. I really enjoy cooking and grilling, especially when it involves pasta or large hunks of beef. I sometimes play video games on my computer, ranging from MMOs to FPS. I repair small lawnmower and tractor engines for a hobby, and while I don't really have any desire of spiffing up my own car, I am fascinated in the mechanics of how. There are many other things I enjoy a lot too! You might find that many of these indie kids are possessing a depth to them far greater than their appearance may hint at.
