Music to fight to.
« on: 01 Oct 2009, 03:37 »

I mentioned on another thread that my favourite type of music is the sort you could fight a war/battle/mano a alieno while listening to it.

Music's been an inextricable part of warfare for a long time. Scottish and British forces marching to battle with bagpipers at the head, Zulu war chants, Maori Hakkas and of course, with the invention of personal audio players, you've got many images of US Servicemen rolling in the desert with iPods blasting. There's even the famous story of the first troops heading into Baghdad playing "The roof is on fire" by the Bloodhound Gang.

So what music is good for fighting to? Not just fighting people, I mean even Abigail Whistler had her tunes.
"Shes making playlists. She likes to listen to mp3s when she hunts. Its like her own internal Soundtrack, you know? Dark core, trip-hop, whatever kids are listening to these days. Me, I'm more of a David Hasselhoff fan, you know?"

I say you can't go wrong with a little metal. Man O War (they also do some good stuff for funerals), Dragonforce (Who, ironically, I found because some Jazz fan Hipster students I knew were laughing at it), Blue Oyster Cult...

Then you've got the Goth stuff like Cruxshadows and Within Temptation, the more Folk-y stuff like Heather Alexander, some of the Grunge/Pop stuff like Breaking Benjamin and Rise Against.

Finally, you couldn't mention music of this type without mentioning some of the instrumental stuff. Ride of the Valkyries, Battle without Honor or Humanity, several of the songs from the Iron Man soundtrack...

So, what's your playlist to fight/image fighting to?

I find a lot of hardcore is good fighting music. Simply because it's often very, very angry. Shai Hulud are a pretty good example, although they're more metal-influenced. Anything really chaotic can be fun, so grindcore or mathcore (so many -cores... ) are both pretty good for this. I'm currently listening to Between the Buried and Me's Colors album, and I think that'd be pretty awesome for fighting.

Admittedly I can't remember the last time I was in a proper fight :-P

I always thought 'Creature' by Mad Capsule Markets was a great theme for somebody getting beaten down by a gang, but as for just fighting, I dunno.

There is a lot of metal and very angry music that I wouldn't fight to. Just because it's angry doesn't mean it grips you in that way that makes it feel like you really could take on the world and win. Also, I think it helps if the music has a certain rhythm or pulse. Too fast or two slow and it just doesn't synchronize with the violence at all well.

As for the Bloodhound gang, that was more because they were rolling through a burning city and the lines "We don't need no water let the Mo****Fu***r burn. Burn Mo****Fu***r, burn." (Which is what they got in some trouble for) just fitted the mood.

So far I've only really found one Coheed and Cambria tune I'd like to rumble to. Interestingly it's the soundtrack to the new "9" trailer.

Thanks for the names of a few more groups for me to peruse guys. I always welcome new taste sensations!

Ah yes, Welcome Home...their other stuff isn't really fighting music as such; No World for Tomorrow is pretty good though, it has some martial drumming in parts.

If you want some more specific band recommendations: on the hardcore front, The Hope Conspiracy and Black Flag are great for this kind of thing. Pretty much any hardcore or metal music with a breakdown is good as well. Unearth are a good band for that (especially the song Endless)

Combichrist's new album, Today We Are All Demons would be excellent music for fighting.  There's even a track on there called "Kickstart the Fight", which features excellent vocals by Gen of the Genitorturers.  Other easy slips into the fighting music would be Ministry, particulary the trio of The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, Land of Rape and Honey & KEOAAHEO (Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed or the Way to Suck Eggs).   Pig is good if your like you're fights sleazy, as are KMFDM or Angelspit.

Some Terror EBM or power/rhythmic noise would be good too.  Suicide Commando or some of the faster ESA work; Memmaker's album How to Enlist in a Robot Uprising. Terrorfakt would be another good choice.  Early Pneumatic Detach albums like Meth, and the collab. he did with poet It-Clings called The All Too Logical Descent into Madness would be excellent.

Woo Hoo! Sooo much new music! When I get home this evening I'm just going to indulge in an orgy of loud music and evil laughter!

For the other end of the fight, Man O War's "Crown and the ring" = Definitely music I want played at my funeral.

Viking funeral, naturally.

How could you mention Terrorfakt and Combichrist, but not Feindflug?

FEEEEIIIIINDFLUUUUUUG

Feindflug - AK-47
Feindflug - Kahle Bedrohung
Feindflug - Menschenjagd
Feindflug - Stukas Im Visier
Feindflug - Suchatzki March

I am sure this is the thread that will finally reveal that I am a secret fascist. Probably about the same time I start posting Blood Axis and Kreuzweg Ost...that said I might pull off, as I always post bands with youtube support, and a lot of great martial industrial music either hasn't been posted on youtube, or has been posted with achingly stupid nazi-themed videos. By which I mean not awesome nazi themed videos like this:

Boyd Rice - Total War

or this

DAF - Der Mussolini

The last is not so much a war song but more something for the party afterwards. TANZ DER ADOLF HITLER HO HO HO HOOOOOO!

I do not get in physical altercations but in the rare instance that I play a first person shooter (usually the first Halo game) I like Méphistophélès by Gounod because it makes me feel like I'm playing some futuristic mafia-violence game.

Does KharBevNor's post constitute the invoking of Godwin's law or can we carry on regardless?

I've often been a little worried about admitting I like Man O War as some of their art is a little Aryan-leaning, but then the Aryan's stole a lot of their imagery from the Norse and Swedes and that buncha guys. Let's face it, who wouldn't want to be an awesome Viking! Aside from the crappy sanitation I mean. A Viking is essentially a pirate.

What the hell, I am just posting awesome music.

Let's get some proper heaviness in here! Ancient and modern!

Ancient Rites - Victory or Valhalla (Last Man Standing)
Amon Amarth - Death in Fire
Bolt Thrower - In Battle There Is No Law
The Count Nosferatu Kommando - Jim Beamed Ahnenherbe TV
Cryptic Wintermoon - Bonegrinder 1916
Forefather - Ours Is the Kingdom
Impaled Nazarene - Total War/Winter War

And of course, if you've not got that much balls, but still have some balls, there's always Sabaton.

Sabaton - Aettero Dominatus
Sabaton - Nuclear Attack
Sabaton - Primo Victoria

and then lets cool off with some nice neo-folk...OR NOT!

Gae Bolg - (Black) Sabbath

(seriously listen to that last one so awesome).

I personally don't really worry that much about the imagery used by the bands I listen to or their fans because I'm not a nazi and anyone who could get made into a nazi by listening to music is a total fucking retard.

Heather Alexander has done some awesome folk music. "Brannigan's Special Ale" is pretty good. She's also done "Courage Knows No Bounds" which is awesome but her masterpiece has to be "March of Cambreath". Absolutely awesome faux-Scottish war music. John Ringo's featured that one song in a hell of a lot of his books, usually battle scenes.

"Sound the horn and call the cry, How many of them can we make die!"

Same here, it's kind of strange to be honest but most of the time very aggressive music kind of relax me a lot.
But yeah, I would love to kick some ass with some good Grindcore. Mainly Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death

possibly Ye Entrancemperium.  Just instrumentally.  I mean, unless if you know the lyrics already, you're not going to understand them anyway, buried as they are under mountains of blastbeats and synth.

I have a friend who is a writer, and whenever he needs to write a fight scene, he puts Welcome Home on repeat until he's done.

On topic:  How about Metallica?  Kill 'Em All would be particularly appropriate.

Or if you're trying to get the other side to surrender, Drop Your Guns by April Wine.

Or: Nightwish would work well, methinks.

Or: Make a playlist of songs like Civil War, Hero of War, and (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding just to be ironic.

I've had a 'Battle' playlist for a while but this thread has really made me reconsider it. The problem is that it includes too much music that is just kinda ok. Stuff where the sentiment is right or the name but I really couldn't imagine facing down a snarling horde while listening to them.

Actually, in my head, I'm usually fighting Aliens for the fate of the Earth when I have this soundtrack on.

So I've been cutting and trimming, going back over old music and - leaving out the music that's been suggested here and I haven't had time to incorporate yet - I think I've come up with at least a preliminary battle soundtrack.

1. What have you done now - Within Temptation (Featuring Keith Caputo)
2. Paper Wings - Rise Against
3. Dancing for Rain - Rise Against
4. Gulmira - Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man Soundtrack)
5. Weapons of Mass Distortion - The Crystal Method
6. Battle without Honor or Humanity - Tomoyasu Hotei
7. Turn the Page - The Streets
8. Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria
9. Through the Fire and the Flames - Dragonforce
10. Velocity Shift - Overseer
11. Lament - Phantom Lacuna

I'd call that a good start. But it needs MORE!

Ok, well, those Iggy Pop Raw Power tracks are definitely going into my collection! Search and Destroy - particularly with that video - is awesome.

A lot of the really heavy Norse growling metal is a little outside my comfort zone. Awesome, but not my choice for fight music.

Since I only have medium balls I did enjoy Sabaton.

Gotta love that Hakka, especially since all you can do is stand there and take it, face it down. There is no other option and not much in the way of rebuttal. Those Maoris are masters of psychological warfare. Apparently the translation is something about a fat bearded man going up a hill and coming back with the sun. Oh and something about dying.

I have it on good authority (i.e. I noticed this at events) that most actual fighters of the MMA persuasion enjoy their entry music either being Hard techno stuff (the 666bpm fucking them up something good, apparantly) or some serious black metal tunes.

Me, I'd go with Cradle Of Filth, I guess. Gilded Cunt or Thirteen Autumns And A Widow.

How could you mention Terrorfakt and Combichrist, but not Feindflug?

Oh, it's not a purposeful omission.  I generally forget about them as I've never really gotten into them.  I'm not sure why... just can't crack them open.

To further toss up some tunes in the same general vicinity, only a very messy, bloody death can come from listening to Navicon Torture Technologies.  I think it's music made just to make you incredibly edgy and tweaked out.  Prometheus Burning is good to, if you want to fight to some hyper-agressive breakcore.  I'll also toss in Front Line Assembly's two more guitar twinged albums, Millenium and Hard Wired for the specific reason that Devin Townsend does some great, massive work on both.

Nah, Drowningman are way too emo. You can't bust heads when someone might be about to sing "why must this radio play songs that make me cry."

Urko - Ready To Bleed or Death Orgasm would work, and I reckon The Swarm - Fucking Invincible At 1 am could be suitable for some curb stomping action. Voorhees - Kicked Downstairs would probably be best though. "Now it's all that he said she said. It's bullshit. I wanna hear stories about people getting kicked downstairs headfirst again. Don't want to talk it out. Come and fight. Fight me!"

Interesting topic for me.

I served in Somalia and I had a walkman with a mix tape labeled "songs for killing" that I always listened to just before we thought shit might get hairy.   A lot of my buddies made fun of me, however, I would get all jacked up pre-mission.   What was on it?  It started with The Eliminator by Agnostic Front, then was Fallout by Nausea. Disposable Heroes by Metallica, Peace Sells by Megadeth.  Then was Malfunction, World Peace, and Hard Times by Cro-Mags, Then the Sick of it All 7" finished off the first side.   Side two started with My War by Black Flag,  Sob Story by Minor Threat, Fire Walker by Slapshot, Stigmata and So What by Ministry, then strangely enough I had a bunch of Operation Ivy songs on there before it finished with Alice Cooper's Welcome to my Nightmare and Eighteen.   We would haul ass up and down the MSR, me hanging out the top of the hummer behind my 60 with that shit blasting in my ears.

Can you tell I listened to that tape a lot?  I've been back from Somalia almost 16 years.  In fact, today is the 16th anniversary of a bunch of shit which had me thinking about that particular tape anyway recently.

So anyway... When I went to Bosnia my mission was very different and I was working around a lot of live landmines and UXO, so I wanted a mellow groove every morning.  I didn't have one particular tape, but I listened to a lot of Mission U.K. Fields of the Nephilim, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division... anything that wasn't going to get me all hyper and shaky around things that might go boom.

To further toss up some tunes in the same general vicinity, only a very messy, bloody death can come from listening to Navicon Torture Technologies.

Yay! I thought this kind of stuff would be way beyond the comfort zones of anyone on this forum. Further to this, Brighter Death Now, Grunt, Operation Cleansweep, MZ.412, Genocide Organ, Propergol, Deathpile, The Grey Wolves, Sutcliffe Jugend (WHEN PORNOGRAPHY IS NO LONGER ENOUGH!!!) and Con-Dom. Death Industrial or no Industrial at all, wimps and posers...die screaming under the concentrated fire of massive black panzer tanks.

Generally I feel hardcore would certainly fit for this (My fave hardcore is Sick of it All, so I'd suggest their album Death to Tyrants, since each song is very short, and it'd be a quick battle if it was set to just one of their songs), or some amazing black/death metal along the lines of Morbid Angel or Gojira

And, finally, this would be a song to which I would listen during an epic battle (esp the chorus):
Sons of Odin by Manowar

Don't worry. He is in the UK, so he is pretty much harmless. I don't think the military would take him, and even if they would, he would have to cut his hair, a metalhead's hair is his power, same as Samson.

Wow! Pretty impressive stuff! I'm going to have to pretty much remake that tape and have a listen. I think I have a version of 18 already and Metallica and Megadeth are always worth a listen. The downside of so much loud music in a danger zone is that you might not hear something dangerous coming your way. I know I can't rock out as much as I'd like to when playing BF2 because you need to hear the audio cues to what's going on.

BTW, the best thing about Metalheads? No matter how scary they are, you know they can't be racist neo-nazi types. In the war of Skinheads Vs. Metalheads the Metalheads are on our side and there's no way the Skinheads are winning!
