Finally beating *that* game....
« on: 26 Oct 2009, 13:29 »

Does anyone else have that game that for some reason, they never get around to beating it even though they play it so very often?

It could be that it's too hard, or you just get sidetracked before the end. Or, I dunno, make something up.

Me, I'm about to finish Baldur's Gate for the first time since I got it 8 years ago. I'd always get sidetracked or fed up with particular battles. A few months ago, I finished Alex Kidd in Miracle world for the first time since 1992.

So I guess what I'm getting at is post your own experiences with things like that. Yeah.

Yeah that happened to me with No More Heroes.  The game was pretty good except for the GTA-like parts and there was a really huge amount of that before I even got to the final boss, so I just said fuck it.

Up until sometime last year I never made it past the horadric staff portion of Diablo II, in Act Two. I eventually got an assassin to Act Three but I ended up investing a point in a shitty skill. That tends to dampen my enthusiasm because things get slightly harder and I get slightly less powerful. Plus you just eventually lose interest.

The only game I was ever unable to beat, and after 10 years still am, is Pandemonium 2. That god damn giant robot that plays a game of Breakout with you as the paddle, and him as the brick, and when you let five balls pass your vehicle breaks and you crash and burn to your exploding rocket death. His name is Mr. Schneobelen. I could never beat him when I was eight, and when I last replayed the game, I got through the whole game and still got fucked by that robot.

Fuck that guy.

I always got to the part where you gotta gather triforce shards then quit. I did however cheat my way past that part and beat the game.

It probably doesn't help much that Act 2 has some of the more frustrating ways to die snuck in there as well, at least for neophytes. For example, if I remember correctly those vultures had a jacked up attack speed and could keep you stuck in the flinch animation pretty easily if they got off a good string of attacks. Real dangerous if you're trying to separate them from a named mob when it happens. And of course there's Duriel, who is renowned for his caster gibbing capabilities.

It used to be the final fantasy games for me.  The first one I ever got around to beating was 7.  Then I went back through and beat all the rest.

Except X-2.  Man, fuck that game.

Hell, even if you weren't a caster, you were fucked on Duriel if you had no way to resist the slow effect.

Related, but I finally got to, and defeated, Baal about 3 months ago.

FFVIII, but not because I did not like it (I really enjoyed it) but because I put off beating it to do all the little side-questy things.

That's actually a problem I had with all of the Final Fantasy games. It took me forever to finish X because I didn't want to end it, and VII took me a long while too. Also I never finished XII, but that's because it sucked.

I enjoyed the ADHD game. The one with the flashing letters/numbers/whatever? I scored the lowest possible score for my impulsivity (meaning I'm really, really impulsive) and just two or three points below the highest score for whatever that word was that meant you could do it for a long time (meaning I could do it for a long time). I don't know why I'm bragging about that, I guess I don't have that much to brag about?

Oh, also Ocarina of Time, but that's because my sister and I used a gameshark that basically finished the game for us and it caused one section of the game to be impassible.

I've never beaten Ocarina of Time.  I feel like an idiot after I spend about two hours in there trying to figure out how to get to the room with Shadow Link.  There's just this one key that I cannot find.  I haven't even been able to beat it WITH a guide.

I'll be trying again soon, my girlfriend got me an N64 last Christmas along with Zelda and Starfox.  She's awesome.

This generation I haven't been able to beat Disgaea 3, it's an incredibly deep grid based strategy JRPG and it's tons of fun and the story is pretty fun to follow.  I got pretty close to beating it (I think) but I swapped out my HD and then upgraded to a PS3 slim so I lost all my saves.  I'll be really happy when I beat Demon's Souls...which might happen....someday.

I've had N-Game sitting on my desktop for the past 2 years laughing at me with every episode except 88 finished because bloody 88-4 is a monster that chews me alive. I've never even seen episode 89 because I refuse to cheat.

Also Advance Wars 2 for GBA. I think I got to the second-to-last level? But I got to where you had to blast through a pipe that was in direct line of fire of a large cannon and I just couldn't do it while getting pounded by the multiple units the enemy was pumping out every turn.

I have really always wanted to finish Sam & Max Hit the Road but something always takes my attention away from it.

Not quite the same thing, but I never properly completed Monkey Island 2, either. Needed a guide for that final puzzle with the elevator and the tissue and blergh. I feel the shame of this may haunt me forever. :(

Fallout 3 because it bored the pants off me.

Me, too.  I stopped playing because I had to go do something, and then I just had absolutely no desire to ever play it again.

Incidentally, it took me forever to finish Fallout 2, because I somehow lost my save games very close to the end (I think I had found all the stuff to make the boat go, and I was just finishing up a few things) and I didn't want to put in all of the work again.  I ended up doing so and it was totally worth it.

Weirdly I realised a couple days ago I never completed either of the Baldur's Gate games, so I've re-installed them and playing through again... seems to be a common theme.

Aside from that nothing really springs to mind. There are some games I started - Fallout 3 springs to mind - but just couldn't maintain interest long enough to see through. I don't really class it as not finishing since I didn't even really get started. I didn't finish Gears of War but that's because the first time I played it, I played it co-op and we cleared about 50, maybe 75% of the content before we gave it a rest. Never been able to really fire it up single player.

I see there's a lot of "I didn't finish X because I didn't want to" and not much of "I didn't finish game X because it was impossible". Maybe games are too easy these days.

Anyway, to jump on the bandwagon of "it was boring and dumb": Red Faction: Guerrilla.

I still haven't finished all the expansions for Fallout 3, but I don't really feel like doing it either. Also, Final Fantasy IX, loved it to bits but got to a point at which I simply couldn't finish and didn't bother to grind. It also got a lot less interesting when you got into the fourth disc, the beginning 3 had an epic storyline, but then everything got way too big and I lost interest. Compare to a friend who has gotten to 10k in the Vivi skipping game in the beginning of the game. Holy fucking shit.

Fallout 3 because it bored the pants off me.

Me, too.  I stopped playing because I had to go do something, and then I just had absolutely no desire to ever play it again.

Same here. I think the game loses its appeal after the first couple of hours.

As for other games, I usually never finish games I buy. When I sense that I'm at the end, I just lose interest and stop playing for about a year and thenI come back to it and finish the game. (Eg.: Metroid Prime 3. I bought the game when it came out. I played until I was on that Phazon planet at the end. I saved. And didn't touch it for about a year. I playd again from where I last saved and finished it.)

My list of non-finished games includes Banjo-Kazooie on 360, GTA IV, Fallout 3, Rainbow Six Vegas, Trauma Center: New Blood, Never finished the Tour in Rock Band 2.

The fucking hoverbike level.

I'd be cruising, have like 10 lives, all my continues, get to the hoverbikes, and IF I had the sequence memorized, and my reflexes were PERFECT, and I didn't get fucked by enemies, I MIGHT have like, 1 life and half health for the next level.

Warlords Battlecry  (I actually forget which one it was either 1 or 2)  In any case I chose the "evil" side and was dominated everything with my undead hordes...

...then one level  INSANE difficulty.  I don't know how ANYONE would be able to beat that thing.

Starcraft custom Levels the Black Dream.  Hard.

FF7.  I just could never finish the thing.

Oh, I never finished Bioshock.  It's not that I didn't like it, it's just that I find survival horror games to be a lot of work.  Advancing slowly, trying to trigger the enemies one at a time and having to conserve ammo so much, it just becomes really draining, and for a while I didn't want to put that much work into playing a game, then I just kind of forgot about it.  Maybe I should pick it up again since Bioshock 2 is coming out reasonably soon.

Man I beat Oblivion twice (side quests included) and I still feel the itch to play again occasionally.

I've only beaten it once, but I've got 200 hours in one save, 120 in another and then a couple of friends' games that add up to another 40 hours or so.

Yeah, I beat Bioshock fast, but definitely not due to treating it like a survival horror game. Mostly I clubbed the shit out of splicers until they died, eventually becoming a genetic freak optimized for maximum wrench swinging prowess.

I just got the image of a midwife and a woman giving birth swinging towards each other on a trapeze - when they meet, the midwife pulls the baby out. The knife juggler is standing on the floor and cuts the umbilical cord with a a knifethrow.

X-Com: UFO Defense. I have started this game so many damn times, and I LOVE it, but I've never gotten to Mars.  :-(
